  • Okowa gets backing from ex-militants, youths

Ex-agitators and youths in Niger Delta have adopted Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa for a second term.

The former militants, and youths belong to the Coalition of Niger Delta Ex-militants and Youths for Atiku/Obi 2019.

Led by Eshanekpe Israel aka Akpodoro, the group noted that Okowa deserved “even much more than a second term in office”, citing his impressive developmental initiatives in less than four years in office.

Akpodoro, the national coordinator, spoke to reporters in Abuja, yesterday, saying  the endorsement came after consultations with stakeholders in the Delta project.

He said equity based on zoning must be respected, noting that besides, Okowa had done better than his precedessors in terms of achievements, honesty, and sincerity of purpose.

Akpodoro added that no government in the state’s history had taken such huge steps in infrastructural, human and material development, as ‘’this administration is selflessly doing’’.

The coalition said Okowa, the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP) had given appointments to  all without discrimination in his bid to drive an all-inclusive government, and give the people a “sense of belonging’’.

He listed roads and bridges built by the administration across the three senatorial districts, which he noted, had massively changed the narrative.

The coalition is a 200,000-member group drawn from the leadership of former agitators in the Federal Government’s Amnesty programme, and a large youth population.

It warned those it described as ‘’children of anarchy’’ not to cause disaffection by flying the ethnic flag for personal interest, saying Okowa’s support base and popularity cut across tribal divide, cautioning these “rebellious” characters not to undermine the peace in the state by creating divisions.

The group noted that the Urhobo in Delta Central and Itsekiri in the southern district had their share of governance, adding that it would be reasonable those who served eight years each, support  Delta North to do same.

Urhobo-born Akodoro, also coordinator of Urhobo Youth Forum for Change (UYFC), said the coalition had enough strength to drive the process of returning the Ika-born politician to the Government House.

‘’This is a PDP state and will remain so for a long time to come. We’ll deliver bulk votes to the governor from the eight Urhobo councils.

But Akpodoro wondered why an Urhobo man would challenge a second term bid of a Delta North candidate?

He stressed that the political class had established a zoning system, with the two districts serving 16 of eight years each.

The North, he noted, had not even completed its four-year term, yet ‘’some selfish interests were angling to undermine a system that strengthens our brotherhood, uniting us beyond politics.’’

“In the name of crass politics, some persons choose to play dirty deceiving themselves by wearing deceptive democratic faces, whereas they are anti-democratic elements, who have shown enough disdain for democratic norms.

“The coalition shall be up against whoever wants to sabotage zoning, and Okowa’s friends shall be our friends while his enemies shall be our enemies, “Akpodoro said.

He added that the group at the national level would work to enthrone Alhaji Atiku Abubakar and ex-Governor Peter Obi, to oust the President Muhammadu Buhari-led APC administration.

He said Nigerians must rise up to end the regime of debilitating hunger in the land bequeathed on Nigerians by the ineptitude of the Buhari government.

‘’The situation in the country was an avoidable malady brought by the deception of APC, which captured power with lies and blackmail’’.

Buhari, he said, should be preparing his handover note.

  • Okowa lauds road projects in Delta

DELTAState governor, Dr Ifeanyi Okowa, has expressed satisfaction over the quality of roads constructed by his administration. Okowa said he is hopeful that the roads are meeting the yearnings of the people. The governor spoke yesterday in Asaba after inspecting the level of work done at the storm drainage projects, the Mariam Babangida Way and other projects. He said: “it is a thing of joy that the people are happy with our projects. It shows that we are meeting with their expectations. I was quite surprised with the way the network of roads in Okpanam have impacted on the lives of the people because, obviously, the people were in difficulties before the roads were constructed.

“As an individual, I am happy that the people appreciate what we are doing and as a government, we will continue to develop our road infrastructure and other infrastructures because, that is the promise we made to the people. We will continue to work hard because the excitement of the people when developmental projects are being achieved brings so much joy to us in government and the network of roads in Okpanam is truly a thing of joy.” He added, “with the dry season, we will do a lot more in the area of road construction; we are aware that despite our efforts to construct roads in different parts of the state, road infrastructure still needs a lot of attention in our state and we are aware of the importance of good road network to the lives of our people.”

  • Okowa urges clerics to demand credible polls

Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa has urged clerics to clamour for a credible 2019 general election.

He said credible elections would attract foreign direct investment and boost our image among democratic nations.

Okowa  spoke yesterday when he received the executive committee of the Delta State chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Asaba.

According to the governor, “the Church should pray for our country Nigeria and the state; the Church should make its position known that we can have free and fair elections in Nigeria because, if we have credible elections, the comity of nations will have respect for us in the country and there will be direct foreign investment and the resource base of the country will develop.”

  • Dickson, Okowa launch Safe Motherhood project in Bayelsa

BAYELSA and Delta State governors Seriake Dickson, and Ifeanyi Okowa, yesterday, inaugurated the Safe Motherhood Scheme in Bayelsa State.

The scheme, which was launched at the DSP Alamieyeseigha Memorial Hall, Yenagoa, involved free cash transfers of N3,000 monthly to each registered expectant woman in the state.

The launching, which attracted over 1,000 registered women, is part of the Safe Motherhood programme initiated by Dickson to reduce to high maternal and infant mortality rates.

Speaking to the crowd, Dickson recalled that on July 31, the government convened a summit of stakeholders in healthcare to deal with mortality.

He said part of the resolutions was the introduction of safe motherhood policies, adding that all medical architectures worked hard to formulate the scheme.

Dickson said: “A lot of work has been done in the area of sensitization. There is still a need for constant enlightenment. A number of the causes of death attributed to witchcraft are as a result of lack of knowledge.

“So, we have a lot of work to do to educate our people on the need to register for ante-natal services and to deliver in the hands of a trained healthcare provider. We are here to demonstrate the policy that was announced.

“What we held in July was a summit. But we have gathered for the official launch of that programme. We made an announcement of N3000 allowance to every pregnant woman in Bayelsa.

“We made it clear that the money was not just to be giving to every woman that is pregnant, you have to first go the healthcare delivery centre. We have enough healthcare facilities for all our pregnant women to be attended to”.

The governor encouraged expectant mothers to register to enable them qualify for the cash transfers and other ante-natal and neo-natal care.

He said: “Once you are registered and it is confirmed through basic tests that you are organ ant, you are automatically eligible to N3000 every month. It is your right and you don’t need to beg anybody for it. But be sure we are following up on the attendance.

“Once you register, you won’t get the money until there is evidence that you have registered. Your regular attendance at the healthcare provider will determine whether you will continue all through your pregnancy to receive the money. We want to monitor the attendance”.

The governor praised Okowa for his leadership and performance and for coming to Bayelsa to inaugurate the scheme.

  • Okowa advocates alternative funding for INEC

Delta State Governor Dr Ifeanyi Okowa has advocated alternative funding of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure its independence.

Okowa spoke yesterday at the executive session of the 14th All Nigeria Editor’s Conference (ANEC).

The event which helds in Asaba-Delta State had as its theme, “Credible elections, sustainable democracy and the role of the media.”

He said: “INEC is supposed to be an unbiased body. So, how can they truly be unbiased? How will they get their source of funding?

“How will they work on their process of appointments? These and more questions are what we are supposed to address and they have to be dealt with in such a manner that we can give them enough power, make them truly independent in such a manner that they do not walk cap in hand to the executive to ask for funding because when you know that somebody controls the funds, you will definitely not be in a position to be truly independent.”

He went on: “I still believe that there is a lot to be done which means that our legislations must be in such a manner that will truly make INEC independent and if they are going to be answerable to anybody at all, they should be answerable to the legislature and not any other arm of government which will be better”.

On how the Peoples Democratic Party’s Special Convention Planning Committee was free, credible and acceptable, he said: “We had to extract from our National Executive that we would be allowed to do what is right.

“We will not accept the nominations to conduct the primaries and I thank God that they allowed us do what is right and once we do things right, it becomes easier for one to move forward and the press is very important in trying to turn things around for our country.”

  • Okowa on devt journalism

Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa on Wednesday urged the media to focus on developmental issues that could positively impact the country rather than propagate hate speech or engage in fake news.

Okowa, represented by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Charles Aniagwu, gave the charge at the 5th Annual Conference of the Association of Communication Scholars and Professionals of Nigeria (ACSPN) in Asaba.

The conference has the theme: “Media Narratives: Hate Speech, Fake News and Political Stability in Africa”.

According to him, hate speeches and fake news would remain a challenge to the country until Nigerians imbibed the attitude of nationalism to conquer them.

He said that the media had the responsibility of ensuring development in the country and unity of its people.

“The media has the onerous responsibility of setting the agenda, but today, the media is rather propagating the agenda thereby giving room for hate speech and fake news,” he said.

The governor said all Nigerians, including media practitioners, had the collective responsibility to make the country progress.

“I want to plead with the media, members of the pen profession, and the entire Nigerians to realise that we have no other country but Nigeria.

“It is our responsibility to ensure its existence and to develop it,” the governor said.

The Chairman of the occasion, Prof. Sam Oyovbaire, said it had become a daunting task to curb hate speeches and fake news.

Oyovbaire said modern trend and advent of new technologies and the social media had made it difficult to curb hate speeches and fake news.

He said it had become difficult for regulating agencies to check hate speeches and fake news.
