Artificial Intelligence is transforming healthcare, Okpebholo tells Orthodontists

Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has called on the Nigerian Association of Orthodontics to embrace technology and innovations to advance development in the health sector.

The Edo governor said artificial intelligence was already transforming the way orthodontic care is delivered.

He spoke on Thursday at the 19th Scientific Conference and Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the association.

Represented by his Commissioner for Health, Dr. Cyril Oshiomhole, Governor Okpebholo said technology and innovation were key to making advancement in the health sector.

He appreciated the association for its consistency and commitment to advancing oral health in Nigeria.

Okpebholo urged participants and delegates to embrace technology and innovations in Orthodontics.

“Orthodontics is not only about aligning teeth. It is about restoring confidence, improving speech, nutrition, and overall well-being. You make people smile with dignity, and that is priceless.

“For us in Nigeria, the real challenge is to ensure that these innovations do not remain out of reach for the majority of our people. We must embrace technology in a way that improves access, affordability, and safety for all.”

President of the Association, Dr. Olayinka Adeyinka, said orthodontics played a crucial role in delivering optimal oral health care to the population by correcting and managing malocclusions.

He noted that malocclusions, if not treated, could be debilitating both functionally and mentally.

“We also play a major and critical role in the management and rehabilitation of babies born with cleft lip and palate, managing them until adolescent years along with other specialists.

“Most of these patients come from low-income families, and Orthodontists help ease the burden of care for these patients through their timely and expert intervention,” Adeyinka said.

Chief Medical Director of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, Prof. Idia Ize-Iyamu, emerged as the new President of the Association.

Ossiomo Power urges Okpebholo to reconsider deal for wider access to 24-hrs electricity

The management of Ossiomo Power has appealed to Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, to reconsider its business arrangement with the company so that residents across the state can benefit from its 24-hour electricity supply.

Governor Okpebholo had recently disconnected the state government’s 11kva line from Ossiomo Power and reconnected it to the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) following the temporary shutdown of Ossiomo’s plant by its partner, Jiangsu Communication Clean Energy Technology Company (CCETC).

Although Ossiomo Power has since purchased turbines, engaged Pakistani engineers, and restored electricity to customers on its 33kva lines, consumers on the government-owned 11kva lines have remained without supply.

Speaking at a press briefing in Benin City, counsel to Ossiomo Power, Emmanuel Usoh, explained that the company’s relationship with the state government was based on a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA).

He added that Ossiomo developed the power project and sells to the Edo State Government at market value, stressing that the company bears no grudge against the government despite the setback.

“My appeal to the government is to do business with us so that everyone in Edo will benefit.”

He said Ossiomo Power remained an indigenous company owned 100 percent by Nigerians.

Usoh explained that Ossiomo Investment Limited was not about generation of electricity but a full package of investment for Edo state.

According to him, “There is a jetty being developed, there is the industrial park within the system, and so many other facilities to be created in a free trade zone.

“The Free Trade Zone was approved by the federal government during the period of Comrade Adams Aliyu Oshiomole, and the letters for the approval of the free trade zone are available for checks.

“Edo state citizens and Nigerians should be vigilant to ensure that Ossioma is given the opportunity to thrive so that other investors will run around the state and develop the state.

“By the time the Free Trade Zone is fully operational at the behest of Ossimo, I am sure that unemployment will reduce drastically, and electricity, which we crave for very seriously in this country, will be a thing easily supplied by Ossiomo Investment Limited.

“In that company too, there is a fertilizer plant that is being developed along with other facilities.”

Usoh said the firm was prepared to go to Singapore, where the arbitration on the dispute will be heard.

Stop fuelling Edo–Delta boundary dispute, Okpebholo tells companies

Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has cautioned companies operating in the Edo and Delta states against fuelling boundary disputes between both states.

Governor Okpebholo, who called on the federal government to intervene, said companies were exploiting lingering boundary disputes for their benefit.

The Edo governor warned the companies to desist from encroaching on Edo territory, saying the matter was at the National Boundary Commission (NBC) for adjudication and adjustment.

Okpebholo, who was represented by his Deputy, Dennis Idahosa, gave the warning during a fact-finding visit to the disputed areas.

He was accompanied on the visit by the Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG), Zone 5, Salman-Dogo Garba, and other top security officials.

Okpebholo urged the affected communities to remain peaceful and law-abiding, adding that the dispute was being handled at the highest level of national authority.

His visit followed recent reports of encroachment on Edo territory by the Delta State Government and companies attempting to establish operations on the disputed lands.

“We are here at the boundary to see the disputed area and the actual demarcation. We are appealing to the Federal Government and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to ensure that the NBC steps in and expedites action so that this dispute is resolved once and for all.

“This River Ethiope is a natural boundary. We don’t want a crisis in the South-South or between Edo and Delta States. We are brothers, having once been the Bendel State before Delta was created. We want peace, and we want the right thing done quickly.

At Urhonigbe Community, Orhionmwon Local Government Area, Governor Okpebholo said his administration remained committed to safeguarding their interests and called for restraint.

“Please don’t take the law into your hands. As a government, we will protect the territorial integrity of Edo State. But we must maintain peace and harmony with our neighbors while this matter is before the NBC.

“We want to appeal, and equally send a strong warning, to companies in Delta State that are trying to encroach on our land. We don’t want any invasion pending the NBC resolution. All activities from these companies must stop immediately,” he warned.

The disputed territory lies between Urhonigbe Community in Orhionmwon Local Government Area of Edo State, and Umutu Community in Ukwuani Local Government Area of Delta State.

Governor Okpebholo emphasised that while his administration was committed to defending Edo territorial claims, it would do so with fairness, peace, and respect for due process.

“Our ultimate goal is to ensure justice, preserve harmony, and protect the integrity of our people and our State,” he affirmed.

Commissioner-designate and former lawmaker, Etiosa Ogbeiwi, said the Delta Government brought equipment to occupy Edo land instead of waiting for the resolution of the NBC.

“The boundary between Edo and Delta is clearly demarcated by the River Ethiop, but they crossed into Edo territory to establish farm settlements. Edo State has all the documentary evidence proving this land belongs to us.

“During the reigns of Oba Akenzua I and II, homage and rent were paid to the state and the Oba of Benin. We do not want to take the law into our hands, which is why we called on the governor. We are glad the Deputy Governor and the AIG are here to see things for themselves,” Ogbeiwi said.
