Okpebholo rescues victims in multiple accidents

Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has rescued several injured persons who were involved in a multiple road accident along the Benin–Auchi highway.

Governor Okpebholo was on his way to his Irrua country home when his convoy ran into the incident.

His convoy was said to have run into a heavy gridlock on the highway when the governor alighted to observe the cause of the gridlock.

Eyewitnesses said the accident was caused by a white Toyota Venza, marked ABUJA, GWA 50 AW, who drove against traffic and had a collision with three commercial minibuses loaded with passengers.

A statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, said the governor displayed uncommon compassion and leadership when he intervened to rescue the injured victims

According to the statement, “On arrival at the accident scene, he met several victims in critical condition, many bleeding profusely, while bystanders stood helplessly, recording videos instead of offering assistance.

“Moved by the dire state of the victims, Governor Okpebholo ordered two of his security Hilux vehicles to be converted into an emergency transport vehicle.

“He personally supervised over injured passengers, including a woman with severe injuries, who were lifted one after another into the waiting vehicle and rushed to the hospital for urgent treatment.

“The governor remained at the accident scene until he was assured that the victims were safely conveyed to a medical facility under the escort of another security vehicle, before continuing his journey to Irrua.

“His swift action drew applause from motorists, residents, and sympathisers, many of whom hailed him as a humane and God-fearing leader who places the sanctity of life above all else.

“Before the governor arrived, people were only taking pictures and videos. But he came, took charge, and ensured the victims were rescued. This is the kind of leader we need; one who leads with compassion and action,” an eyewitness remarked.

  • Disheartening ethnic slurs against Okpebholo

    Disheartening ethnic slurs against Okpebholo

    • By Fred Itua

The Nigerian Constitution is clear and unambiguous about the position of a governor. Section 176(2) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) states that “the Governor of a State shall be the Chief Executive of that State.” By implication, a governor is not the leader of one senatorial district, ethnic group, or political faction. He is entrusted with the sacred responsibility of governing the entire state and safeguarding the collective welfare of all its citizens, irrespective of origin or affiliation.

Governor Monday Okpebholo has, from the outset of his administration, embraced this constitutional mandate with clarity and consistency. He has shown through both words and actions that he is a detribalised leader who sees Edo State as one indivisible entity. For him, leadership is not about pandering to sectional interests but about building bridges, correcting historical neglect, and laying a foundation for sustainable growth across all three senatorial districts.

It is within this constitutional and moral framework that we must understand the Governor’s policies and priorities. The distribution of projects and appointments has not been arbitrary. Rather, it reflects deliberate choices aimed at balance, fairness, and long-term impact. Edo South, in particular, has been a major beneficiary of these interventions, both in terms of infrastructure and political representation.

Governor Okpebholo’s vision for Edo South is evident in the scale and scope of projects already underway. The Benin–Abraka Road reconstruction, awarded at N21.22 billion, stands out as a landmark intervention. This critical road, stretching over 100 kilometers, had long been a nightmare for commuters, farmers, and traders. By investing in its full rehabilitation, the administration is opening economic corridors that will boost commerce and ease mobility for thousands daily.

Similarly, the Benin–Sapele Road reconstruction has become a symbol of relief for Edo people. The Federal Government, through the Ministry of Works, had terminated the earlier contract due to poor performance. Stepping into the breach, Governor Okpebholo has ensured that a 23-kilometre section is now being delivered at a cost of N35 billion, giving commuters and businesses renewed hope that this vital artery will no longer be a death trap but a channel of prosperity.

In the state capital, Benin City, the Governor has embarked on one of the most ambitious urban renewal projects in decades; the Rahmat Park Flyover. For years, traffic congestion at that junction has been a blight on productivity, wasting countless man-hours and stifling commercial activity.

The flyover, once completed, will not only ease movement but will also stand as a symbol of Edo’s transition into modernity. Complementing this is the Agbor Park Bypass, a long-neglected route that is now receiving the attention it deserves, further decongesting the capital city and improving connectivity for commuters.

Beyond roads, the administration is investing heavily in human development. The Stella Obasanjo Hospital Complex is undergoing a comprehensive reconstruction to transform it into a world-class facility capable of delivering quality healthcare to Edo people. This intervention is not just about bricks and mortar but about safeguarding lives and building a healthier future for the state.

Equally transformative is the Edo Tech City Project, designed to make the state a hub for digital innovation. In an era defined by artificial intelligence, data science, and digital enterprise, Governor Okpebholo is positioning Edo youths to compete globally. This initiative will generate jobs, nurture creativity, and ensure that Edo South and the wider state are not left behind in the fourth industrial revolution.

Other ongoing interventions underscore the Governor’s inclusive vision for Edo South. In education, the Okhoro–Egor axis is witnessing the reconstruction of several dilapidated primary and secondary schools, with modern classrooms, laboratories, and ICT centres being delivered to give children access to 21st-century learning.

In housing, the administration has rolled out the first phase of an affordable housing scheme near the Ugbowo axis to address urban population growth while providing decent shelter for middle – and low-income earners.

In rural electrification, Governor Okpebholo has extended the state’s power initiative to underserved communities around Ovia and Orhionmwon, installing solar mini-grids and rehabilitating distribution lines to ensure villages once cut off from modern life are now connected to power. Water supply, too, is being restored through the revival of moribund borehole and reticulation projects across Ikpoba-Okha and Egor, bringing relief to thousands of households.

While infrastructure often attracts the most attention, it is important to emphasize that Edo South has also benefitted from political balance under this administration. The Governor has made key appointments into strategic offices from the senatorial district. Commissioner nominations, too, have favoured Edo South more than other zones. This is not accidental; it reflects the Governor’s inclusive approach to governance.

By ensuring that Edo South is not only developed but also represented in decision-making, Governor Okpebholo is living out the constitutional principle that a governor is the father of all, not a sectional leader. It is, therefore, both uncharitable and inaccurate for any group to suggest that the district has been marginalised.

Sadly, instead of consolidating on these gains, some voices have chosen the path of discord, attempting to blackmail the government over commissioner appointments. Such agitation is both needless and counterproductive.

Edo does not need distractions. Edo does not need infighting. Edo does not need political undercutting. What the state needs at this defining moment is unity of purpose, collective resolve, and support for a Governor who is delivering on his promises.

The lessons of history are clear. The great legacies of Dr. Samuel Ogbemudia and Professor Ambrose Alli in the old Bendel and Midwestern States were not achieved in an atmosphere of division or petty grievances. They were built on a shared commitment to progress, where leaders and citizens alike transcended narrow interests to pursue the greater good. Today, Governor Okpebholo is treading the same path; firm, focused, and detribalised in outlook.

Governor Okpebholo has chosen the harder path, the path of legacy, not expediency. He is investing in projects that will outlive political cycles and redefine the future of Edo State. For this vision to be realised, every son and daughter of Edo must rise above narrow interests and rally behind him.

The future of our state depends on the choices we make today. Do we embrace unity, or do we succumb to division? Do we support progress, or do we allow distractions to derail us? The answer must be clear. Edo South, and indeed all of Edo State, stand to gain immensely from the consolidation of Governor Okpebholo’s developmental strides.

Let us, therefore, choose wisely. Let us choose unity over division, legacy over fleeting ambition, and progress over regression. With Governor Okpebholo’s vision and the collective will of the people, Edo State will not only rise to greatness but will take its rightful place as a model of development and good governance in Nigeria.

  • Oba market to be completed in 2026, says Okpebholo

Oba market to be completed in 2026, says Okpebholo

Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has assured residents in the state that the rebuilding of the Oba Market would be completed in June 2026.

Governor Okpebholo, who spoke after inspecting ongoing reconstruction and remodelling work at the Oba market, said the reconstruction was being executed under the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which has made resources available for States to drive critical development projects.

A major part of the Oba Market was razed by fire eight years ago, and promises to rebuild the market were not fulfilled.

Addressing the traders and market women after the inspection, Governor Okpebholo said the new Oba market would restore their businesses and elevate them into a modern commercial hub.

He said the remodelled market would be designed to function like a modern shopping mall, complete with restaurants, a crèche, a sick bay, and a mini fire station to forestall future tragedies.

“This market has remained in ruins for the past ten years,” the Governor recalled. “During my campaign, I promised the people that if elected, I would rebuild the Oba Market. Today, I am fulfilling that promise. It is important that leaders keep their word.

“This reconstruction is being powered by the Renewed Hope Agenda of Mr. President, and we are committed to ensuring that the Edo people enjoy the dividends of democracy.

“We will not displace the original occupants of this market,” he added. “Rather, we are building a better environment for them to thrive. The money being spent belongs to the Edo people, and it is only right that it serves their welfare.”

He further assured that the project would be completed ahead of schedule, stressing that his administration would hold the contractors accountable for timely delivery.

“The contractors have assured us of completion next year, but we will push them to deliver even earlier,” the Governor said.

Project Manager for the Oba Market Reconstruction, Mr. Aneru Izuagbe, said the ground floor would accommodate 450 open stalls.

“We are not just rebuilding Oba Market; we are remodelling it into a mall-like structure that provides safety, convenience, and functionality for traders and buyers alike.”

    Edo APC suspends Okpebholo’s aide

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo State has suspended the chairman of Edo State Forestry Commission, Valentine Asuen, for alleged infraction.

Asuen, a former state youth leader of the party and Edo South Senatorial aspirant, was alleged to have committed actions that amounted to incitement and divisiveness within the party.

His suspension was contained in a statement signed by the APC state publicity secretary, Peter Uwadia.

The letter said Asuen was suspended from the Party in accordance with the provisions of the party’s Constitution 2022, as amended.

It said the disciplinary action became necessary because Asuen’s conduct ran contrary to the spirit of unity, loyalty, and collective progress enshrined in the APC’s constitution.

According to the statement, “His actions have been deemed to amount to inciting division within the Party, thereby undermining the cohesion and discipline expected of every member.

“In line with Article 21:2 (ii) & (v) of the Party Constitution 2022, as amended, such conduct constitutes a violation of the obligations of a member.

“The Party urges all members to remain steadfast, united, and focused on the collective vision of the APC, as we continue to work towards delivering good governance and democratic dividends to the people.”

Last week, Asuen was fingered to have sponsored the calls for the resignation of Okah as Secretary of the party.

    He, however, denied the allegations.

Okpebholo begins reconstruction of Edo markets, revives hopes of displaced traders

Six years after multiple fires devastated major markets in Benin City and surrounding areas, Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has commenced the rebuilding of the affected markets, rekindling hope for traders who lost goods worth millions of naira.

Between October 2019 and January 2020, fires razed key markets including Uwelu auto spare parts in Egor, Santana Market in Ikpoba Okha, a shopping complex at Oliha Market, Ekiosa Market, and New Benin Market in Oredo.

The blaze at Ekiosa also damaged parts of the EDPA building along Sakponba Road.

Many traders, left stranded by the infernos, resorted to makeshift stalls and walkways to keep their businesses alive, but their expectations for quick government intervention were unmet.

The incidents sparked political controversy, with the then-governing Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) trading accusations.

In 2023, former Governor Godwin Obaseki’s administration alleged that arsonists set the fires deliberately, accusing the APC of using the tragedy as a political strategy ahead of elections.

Now, with reconstruction underway, displaced traders are optimistic that the rebuilding will restore their businesses and boost commercial activity in the state.

According to him, “For specifics, in 2020, there were fire incidents in Oba market; Uwelu spare parts market; EDPA building; Santana market; Oliha market and Oka market, among others. The APC, at the time, campaigned with these incidents.

“We are seeing a familiar trend in Edo State today as the elections are drawing close. It is indeed curious that since the elections in 2020 till date, we barely had fire incidents in markets. But today, out of the blues, we now have reports of fires in markets. Before you know it, the spokesman for the APC campaign in Edo State is out there crying blue murder that markets are on fire. What manner of witchcraft is that? When did they start caring for Edo people, when we know what they are after is the peoples’ patrimony. The faux tone of care and concern is overused and suspect.

“It is pertinent that we take these matters seriously. It is suspicious and not even circumstantial that the APC is the one reporting these fire incidents. We dare say that they must know about the cause of the fire. It is and has always been a campaign tool for them because they are primitive in their campaign strategies.

“We call on the relevant security agencies, particularly the Nigeria Police Force, to investigate these incidents and invite the leadership of the APC in Edo State to answer serious questions as to what would have been the cause of the fire and how they happen to be using them as a campaign tool.”

“We want to let Edo APC know that we are very well abreast of their antics. This trend, we are sure, will not end with just markets. There will be more targets. They would migrate even to public buildings. The security architecture is being placed on high alert in anticipation of these desperate moves.”

It was in 2024, few months to the governorship election, that former Governor Obaseki flagged off construction of the Ekiosa market.

The market, upon completion, would have 24/7 electricity, internet connectivity, Primary Health Centre and other other facilities. Traders who had stores in the markets before the fire incident four years ago, were asked to should go to the Council Secretariat for verification and validation.

Obaseki vowed he would fulfill his promise to rebuild the burnt markets before the end of his tenure but he never did.

In May this year, Governor Monday Okpebholo approved re-construction of the Oba market. Contractor has been mobilised to site. Drains inside the Oba Market has been desilted. Before the construction of the markets, Governor Okpebholo had banned activities of market unions to curb high cost of goods and services.

A visit to the market showed work was ongoing at the Oba Market. The market was being remodeled in line with modern day demand.

Traders now dispaly their wares on the fence of the market pending when the market woukd be rebuilt. Some of the traders who spoke expressed joy at the pace of work. They prayed the contractor complete the project before the Yuletide season. What worried the traders was activities of middlemen in the allocation of shops.

It was gathered that many of the shops at the Oba market were allocated to some individuals, who inturn, gave them out to the traders at exorbitant rates.

A trader said she paid N200,000 annually for a shop whereas checks showed that the local council allocated the shops at between N15,000 and N25,000 annually.

One of the traders who gave her name as Kate said the work was not as fast as they expected it to be. She said she hoped to get her shop back after completion of the market.

She praised Governor Okpebholo for wiping away their sufferings.

Another trader, Sandra Ikpomen, called for preference tone given to traders affected most by the inferno.

“I was selling hair, perfume, jewelry and other things that were not as expensive as they are now. I took some loans, repaid some and took more to remain in business. I appreciate their work, it is like they work at night sometimes. For me, I am okay here even though I am not relocated but those that were really affected, are now at the back of the market where they are hardly seen, I was just two years here when the place burnt, there are people who had been there for over twenty years.

“Some of them now sell snacks, some sachet water because they could not recover, these are people who had big shops. The compensation the previous government brought, we didn’t know they shared it, I got only N80,000, some people got N400,000. You know the way things work in Nigeria it is who you. I didn’t know how much was brought and some people did not get a dime from it.”

Head of markets in Edo State, Pastor Josephine Ibhaguezejele, hailed Governor Okpebholo for listening to their cries to rebuild the Oba market.

She said, “All I want to say is thank you to the governor who came to our peoples rescue because since he came to office he has been nice and kind to the traders, all the promises he is fulfilling them, he promised that as soon as he enters office, he will rebuild the market. The market was congested and that is why you see traders shading along the road side, the area that was burnt was almost collapsing.

“I went there for inspection and I sent a message to the governor and his response was that he will soon visit the project and less than a month, I was called upon to come to the market and the contractor said the government has approved and paid part of the market, we are all so happy not just because he is building, when the have they have the shops and space, their goods will be safe because they will not be taking their goods home every day. Our governor is not only Akpakorescue, I call him Akpomessiah of Edo State

“The former owners of the burnt shops will get priority because they have their papers, those papers that they were given by the local government when the stalls were allocated to them, will be used to allocate them their stalls, I will make sure that they get their stalls before we will listen to any other person because they lost their goods to the inferno”.

Edo Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Hon Paul Ohonbamu,.assured that Governor Okpebholo has shown committment to restoring the market to its lost glory.

According to him, “The exco approved it and the people have been mobilized to remodel and build the burnt part and other parts of the market. The restructuring will touch the entire market. The governor is serious about it and mobilization has been done and once exco approves, it shows that everything concerning procurement has been done including the state tenders board.”

The Oba Market is an historical market located in the heart of Benin City. Its completion will add to the beauty of the city and perhaps reduce incidences of street trading.
