‘Okpebholo makes bold statement with first flyover in Edo’

Edo State Commissioner for Information and Communications, Mr. Paul Ohonbamu, says Governor Monday Okpebholo is making a bold statement with the building of the first-ever flyover in the state, located at Ramat Park, Ikpoba Hill, Benin.

He said the flyover was a testimonial that would speak for Governor Okpebholo.

Ohonbamu, yesterday in Benin, declared that people who were peddling rumour that the flyover project had been stopped, were dishonest and trying to play politics with their campaign of falsehood.

He said the executive council session also approved the construction of the second flyover at Adesuwa-Sapele Road intersection, also in Benin.

The commissioner said: “Governor Okpebholo has adopted a more practical approach to governance, putting priority on the growth and development of the people of the state, and ensuring all projects executed are of high quality. This is why he personally monitors them.

“Edo governor is a man of few words, with the agenda to set the state on the path of sustainable development, building roads, schools and supporting communities across the state. Edo people should be patient because the governor is determined to rebuild the state and bring joy to the  people.

‘’Governor Okpebholo has started doing in the last few months in office what he promised during his campaigns, and he believes with good roads, the residents will be able to move freely, especially the creation of new roads linking communities in his developmental programmes.”

Ohonbamu said the governor had been justifying the confidence reposed in him by the people with his development strides across all sectors of the state, adding that the giant stride to build the first flyover in Benin was a deliberate step towards achieving the urban development of the state capital.

He said: “Edo governor is very enthusiastic about the quality of execution of all the road projects, which are sufficiently solid and executed by reputable contractors, because these projects will speak for the government. Those peddling rumours are dishonest, because people see the progress and quality of works going on by the contractors.

“Governor Okpebholo wants communities to be linked with roads, so that their economy can be integrated into the national and state economies. Though, the state government cannot fix all the roads in the state, at the same time, the bold steps taken so far should be appreciated and not to be politicised.

“It should not be that whenever we are not at the helm or in government, we peddle all manners of dangerous rumours to distract from the bigger picture and emasculate the good work that is going on. The contractor handling the flyover bridge, Mr. Andy Duan of CCECC, has assured us that the company will work according to specifications and do its best to meet up with the construction period.

“The governor is monitoring projects across the state to ensure the jobs are done according to agreed specifications and has directed that contracts whose handlers are not working according to specifications should be revoked.”

The commissioner urged Edo residents to continue to support the visionary, performing and focused Okpebholo’s administration, to take the state to greater heights.

We are here this evening to celebrate with the governor. We are here to celebrate what God has done for us as a party, which men questioned, but God overruled all those who questioned Him in our favour unanimously.

“God is great, and his decision cannot be questioned. We know we won the election and have no doubt in our minds as God has affirmed the victory. This dinner has enabled leaders across the three senatorial districts of Edo State to come together once again.

“God has chosen you, a man with few words, to set the state on the path of development. As you go about rebuilding roads, schools, supporting communities, and rebuilding lives, that is the way to go to bring joy to the lives of the people. We pray for a clearer vision for Edo people.”

The Chairman of APC in Edo, Jaret Tenebe, in his remarks, thanked the people of the state for their votes during the election, assuring them that the governor would deliver on all his electioneering promises which he said he had already started doing in the last few months in office.

Tenebe said: “This is the first meeting we are having after taking over the governance of Edo State, and it is something to rejoice about. This is an evening with the governor in appreciation of the election in solidarity and support of leaders during the tribunal. We welcome all to this victory dinner and wish all happy celebration.”

A leader of APC in Edo Central, Gen. Cecil Esekhaigbe (rtd.) thanked Esan people for making “Esan Agenda” to become “Edo Agenda,” saying the people were now enjoying the dividends of democracy under Okpebholo.

Dignitaries at the victory dinner included the Deputy Governor, Dennis Idahosa; Secretary to the State Government, Musa Ikhilor; Chief of Staff to the Governor; Gani Audu, Head of Service; Anthony Okungbowa; and former Edo deputy governor, Comrade Phillip Shaibu.

  • Okpebholo, Edo PDP trade words over Tinubu’s re-election campaigns

Okpebholo, Edo PDP trade words over Tinubu’s re-election campaigns

Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo and the state’s chapter of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have disagreed on bitterness and falsehood associated with the 2027 re-election campaigns for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The governor, through his Chief Press Secretary (CPS), Fred Itua, yesterday in a statement, accused PDP of recklessness and being malicious.

PDP, through its Publicity Secretary, Chris Nehikhare, had hailed the Presidency for condemning the premature 2027 re-election campaigns for President Tinubu, in order not to heat up the polity.

PDP said: “The Presidency has publicly disclaimed the premature and illegal 2027 campaign billboards flooding parts of Nigeria, including those promoted by Senator Okpebholo and All Progressives Congress (APC)-led government in Edo State. In a statement titled: ‘Presidency Disclaims 2027 Campaign Billboards Nationwide,’ the Federal Government expressed dismay over the growing number of unauthorised political billboards, and reaffirmed its commitment to upholding the rule of law.

“This marks a major blow to Senator Okpebholo’s desperate attempts to curry favour with President Tinubu through reckless and unlawful political grandstanding. Edo State chapter of PDP had raised the alarm in a statement titled: ‘Okpebholo’s Launch of 2027 Presidential Campaigns for Tinubu in Edo: An Insult, an Affront to the Constitution.’

“The Presidency’s intervention validates our concerns and exposes the deceitful tactics of Edo APC, which has shown disregard for the nation’s electoral laws. Their antics have not only embarrassed Edo people, but have also drawn a rebuke from the leadership they were trying to impress.

“We now await the response of the Edo State Government to this direct disapproval from the Presidency. As we previously noted, Section 94 (1) of the Electoral Act 2022 states: ‘The period of campaigning in public by every political party shall commence 150 days before polling day and end 24 hours prior to that day.”

PDP said it remained committed to defending constitutional order and protecting the integrity of the country’s renascent democracy against desperate and unlawful manipulation by the APC.

Okpebholo’s CPS Itua, however, said: “Our attention has been drawn to yet another reckless, misleading and malicious statement credited to Edo State chapter of PDP, signed by its Publicity Secretary, Chris Nehikhare. In the said statement, PDP once again peddled baseless claims and sought to mislead the public on matters it clearly does not understand or deliberately chooses to misrepresent.

“Let it be clearly stated that the statement is a shameful display of PDP’s consistent obsession with fabricating lies against the person of Governor Okpebholo and the progressive administration of APC in Edo State. These repeated outbursts are the product of a party drowning in irrelevance and struggling desperately to remain in public discourse.

“It is hypocritical for the same PDP that has consistently desecrated the rule of law through executive impunity and abuse of office to now quote the Electoral Act in a dishonest attempt to score cheap political points. Edo PDP is in no moral position to lecture anyone on constitutional order or democratic values. Their tenure in power was defined by deceit, maladministration and a relentless assault on truth and transparency.

“Let it also be noted that at the appropriate time, PDP and its officials, including Chris Nehikhare, will be held accountable for the spurious allegations they have repeatedly made against Governor Okpebholo and other public officials. Enough is enough.”
