Edo: Obaseki’s ex-aide Mayaki asks Ighodalo, PDP to concede defeat, support Okpebholo

Former chief press secretary to then governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State, John Mayaki, has urged the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate in the September 21 governorship election in the state, Asue Ighodalo to concede defeat and join hands with the government to build the state.

Mayaki said although he did not support the All Progressives Congress (APC) and its candidate, Monday Okpebholo, during the election, he has decided to move on and support the good initiatives by Governor Okpebholo to develop the state for the benefit of all.

He described the judgment of the election tribunal, which affirmed Okpebholo’s election, as fair and impartial, noting that it would further strengthen good governance in Edo State.

Mayaki, who is the convener of the Coalition for Good Governance and Economic Justice in Africa, said: “Now that the governor’s victory has been reaffirmed, he can concentrate fully on the task of developing the state.”

He stressed the importance of unity in governance, noting that development should be the primary focus of all political stakeholders and leaders.

Mayaki agreed that the PDP and Ighodalo have the right to appeal the tribunal’s decision, but expressed concern over the statement by the United States Mission indicating that it would be monitoring the appeal process.

He said: “I do not think the foreign mission has any role to play in our Judiciary or local politics. There are limits to everything.”

Mayaki urged the PDP not to be swayed by international opinions on Nigeria’s internal political processes, adding that the judiciary is guided by evidence and law, not sentiments or external influence.

He said, “We must stop blaming the judiciary simply because outcomes don’t favor us. Our institutions must be protected, not undermined. If we destroy them today, we will need them tomorrow,” he said

Mayaki commended the media for the accurate and balanced coverage of the tribunal’s proceedings, which he said reaffirmed Okpebholo’s victory I’m the election.

2027: Okpebholo predicts mass defection to APC IN South South

Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, on Saturday, said a wave of massive defections will soon hit opposition political parties in the South-South zone ahead of the 2027 presidential election in the country.

According to a statement signed by the Chief Press Secretary to the Edo State Governor, Fred Itua, on Saturday, Okpebholo spoke at a special reception held for him at Ewatto, Esan South East Local Government Area of Edo State, after the governor’s victory at the election petition tribunal ruling last week.

He thanked the Edo people for their support, prayers, and counting him worthy to lead the State. He assured the people that Edo would progress and develop under his watch.

“The people of Edo State will not regret voting me as their Governor. I am happy today that l’m in a winning party. A party that was rejected by all and now has become the party that everybody wants to join. APC has come to stay as the government at the center.

“Very soon, there will be a lot of defections into the APC. People will move and cross carpet from PDP, LP and other opposition parties into the APC, and that will be the beginning of South South keying into the reform agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“Today, I am happy and proud to say that I am a son to the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. I am also proud to say I carry uncommon grace and uncommon transformation, which I am already using to transform and develop Edo State.

“Words that come out of my mouth are prophetic and I am using these words to develop Edo State. My administration is working to ensure motorable roads and reducing traveling time for our people.

“Our development is also covering other neighboring States because South South must speak with one voice as we approach 2027,” he said.

He said appreciated the royal fathers and the people of Edo for their support and prayers.

The Secretary to the Edo State Government, Musa Ikhilor has said Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has chosen the path of peace to defuse the tension created by the killing of 16 travellers in Uromi. Speaking on TVC Breakfast Show, he said the governor’s visit to Kano averted a major crisis.

“Governor Okpebholo, in his wisdom, has chosen the path of de-escalation. In fact, the governor’s visit to Kano State averted what could have been a catastrophic crisis. Many may not fully understand this, but anyone familiar with Nigeria’s history and ethnic dynamics will appreciate the significance of his actions.

“While in Kano, we met not only with the government and the people of Bokore but also with leaders of various ethnic minority groups, including the Igbo and Yoruba communities. They expressed their gratitude, noting that the governor’s visit was not just a condolence gesture but also a move that helped protect their people in Kano, as well as the millions of Edo indigenes residing there,” he said.

Ikhilor noted that Uromi people saved 11 persons out of the 27 travellers. Three person are receiving treatment in the hospital while others were transported back to Kano by the state government.

He said the governor also  met with the bereaved families, consoled them, and assured them that justice would be served.

Okpebholo promised compensation for the innocent lives lost in a bid to defuse tension.

“The DSS is actively investigating the situation. This is why we suspended the commander of the Edo Security Corps. The governor is proactive and will not allow any sacred cows in this matter.

“People should not only focus on the lives lost but also recognize the lives saved. The people of Uromi deserve commendation for their bravery in rescuing those 11 individuals. We are also working to further sensitize the community, ensuring they do not fall prey to incitement.

“On the issue of insecurity, this government has been proactive. Governor Okpebholo has purchased over 75 brand-new Hilux vehicles for security agencies, which have been distributed accordingly. Before we came in, security agencies relied on old, rickety Sienna vehicles. Additionally, the governor procured power motorcycles to enable security operatives to chase bandits out of the forests, and we are making tremendous progress,” he said.

They arrived in the state from Abuja after the election petition tribunal on Wednesday affirmed their victory in the September 21, 2024 election.

Idahosa, Secretary to State Government Musa Ikhilor and other top government officials accompanied the governor to the palace of the Oba of Benin, His Royal Majesty, Omo N’ Oba N’ Edo Uku Akpolokpolo Oba Ewuare ll.

Okpebholo, riding on a motorcade from the airport, acknowledged cheers from residents.

The governor and his entourage thanked the Oba of Benin for his prayers and support for the new administration since it came on board.

Appreciating the people of Edo State, Okpebholo applauded the judges for their unanimity in their decision in his favour based on what was provided before them by all parties.

He assured the Edo people that his administration would continue with his developmental strides.

He said: “I am here in the palace to let you know that the issues of the election petition have been resolved.

“Three parties took APC to the tribunal, and all the cases were thrown out by the judges. This means that I am the duly elected governor of Edo State.

“Your Majesty, I am here to thank you and the Edo people for the love, prayers, and support shown to my administration.

“I will continue to do my best and work for the Edo people and ensure that Edo enjoys the dividends of democracy.”

Oba Ewuare ll, who was pleased about the outcome of the election petition tribunal, described the governor as a traditional son of the palace.

The monarch personally prayed for Okpebholo, unlike the usual practice of delegating a palace chief to do so.

He noted that some persons came to destroy the Kingdom, but the current governor came to rescue the state and direct it on the path of development and growth.

He prayed for the success of the current administration in Edo State.

“The tribunal judgment was a victory for the Edo people.

“The governor has been doing well for the state as he has hit the ground running.

“I am supposed to travel on a working visit, but when I heard that the governor was coming, I had to wait for him.

“We heard that he wants to bring the victory to his father. I had to wait for him. He is my traditional son.

“We will do our best to be praying for him and play a fatherly role.

“The governor is a traditional son. We will not speak much. This is significant as we have not done this before.

“I appeal to the sons and daughters of the Oba, Chiefs in the palace, as we will not allow our son to kneel for too long.

“We have not done this before, leaving the throne to lift a person up from his kneels. The ancestors directed us to do this.

“I encourage you to work harder, and I know you have been working so hard that sometimes you have no time to play.

“We thank you for coming here first. Thank you so much.”

    APC hails verdict

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) described Okpebholo’s victory at the tribunal as an affirmation of the popular will of the people.

National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, said in a statement: “This landmark judgment validates the overwhelming support of the Edo State electorate for APC’s candidate in the September 21, 2024, gubernatorial election.

“It also stands as an affirmation of the popular will of the good people of Edo State.

“We applaud the judiciary for its well-reasoned decision in the matter, underscoring its independence, professionalism and commitment to strengthening democracy in our country.

“Our great party salutes the good people of Edo State for their massive support of our party during the past election, and for their patience and sustained support through the litigation.”

The party expressed confidence that the victory would energise Okpebholo and urged him to help deliver the Renewed Hope Agenda to the Edo people.

    PDP vows to appeal verdict

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) said it will appeal the judgment.

In a statement by National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, the party described the tribunal’s judgment as a miscarriage of justice and a betrayal of the trust by the tribunal.

It said with the avalanche of evidence presented to the tribunal, it was clear that its candidate, Dr Asue Ighodalo, won the election having scored the highest number of valid votes cast in the election.

The PDP said it was disturbing that in spite of the overwhelming evidence and findings by the tribunal, it contradicted itself by coming to a conclusion that was at variance with its own findings.

The party further stated that democracy could only thrive in an atmosphere of adherence to the rule of law and adjudication of issues.

This, the PDP said, could only be accepted by people when a tribunal of such nature impartially applied the law, the facts and the body of evidence made available to it during proceedings

“However, consistent with PDP’s avowed belief in the capacity of the judiciary to, in appropriate cases, ensure that justice is done, our party and candidate, Ighodalo, are proceeding to the Court of Appeal.”

Okpebholo extends olive branch to Ighodalo, others

Savouring the joy of victory at the tribunal, Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo yesterday waved the olive branch to his major challenger in last year’s governorship election, Dr. Asue Ighodalo, candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

He urged the opposition to join him in the task of developing the state, stressing that governance should now take precedence over politics.

The victory of the governor, who contested on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), was affirmed by the Edo State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal headed by Justice Wilfred Kpochi.

In three judgments, the three-member tribunal held that the petitions by the PDP and it’s candidate, Ighodalo; the Action Alliance (AA) and its National Chairman, Adekunle Omoaje, and the Accord Party and its candidate, Bright Enabulele (A),  were without merit.

In particular, Justice Kpochi , who said there was no meaningful evidence to act upon to nullify the victory of Okpebholo and APC, dismissed the petition in its entirety.

Okpebholo, who was declared the winner of the September 21, 2024 poll by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), scored 291,667 votes.

PDP candidate Ighodalo scored 247,274 votes, and the Labour Party (LP) candidate, Olumide Akpata, came third with 22,763 votes.

There was jubilation in Benin city, following the verdict by the tribunal which sat in Abuja.

However, counsel to Ighodalo and PDP vowed to challenge the judgment at the Court of Appeal, arguing that they did all that was required of them to prove that the election was not free and fair.

Okpebholo dedicated the victory to the people.

A statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, said the judgment validated the popular mandate conferred on him by the electorate.

The statement reads: “Today, Wednesday, 2nd April, 2025, the Elections Tribunal delivered a resounding verdict, affirming the clear mandate of the people and upholding the victory of His Excellency, Governor Monday Okpebholo.

“The Tribunal, after a thorough and impartial examination of the petitions brought forward by the opposition, has dismissed all claims, confirming that the election was conducted in substantial compliance with the Electoral Act and that Governor Monday Okpebholo was duly elected.

“This decision validates the overwhelming support demonstrated by the citizens and residents of Edo State during the election. It reaffirms the integrity of our democratic process and stands as a testament to the will of the people.

“Governor Monday Okpebholo wishes to express his profound gratitude to the Tribunal for their diligence and fairness. He also extends his sincere appreciation to the people of Edo State for their unwavering support and belief in his vision for a prosperous and united state.

“This victory is not mine alone, but a victory for every citizen and resident of Edo State. It is a mandate to continue the work we have started, to build a state where everyone has the opportunity to thrive. We remain committed to our promise of good governance, transparency, and inclusive development.”

Why the petitions were dismissed, by tribunal

In his lead judgment, Justice Kpochi, resolved the two issues identified for determination in the petition by the PDP and Ighodalo against them.

The first issue was whether from the totality of pleadings and evidence led by the petitioners, they were able to prove their claim that the election was invalid by non-compliance with the Electoral Act.

In resolving this issue, Justice Kpochi, after evaluating the petitioners’ evidence, held that the PDP and Ighodalo failed to discharge the burden of proof placed on them by the law.

He also held that none of the 19 witnesses called by the petitioners was a relevant witness who could give eye witness accounts of what happened at the polling units, where the results were being contested.

The tribunal chairman noted that most of the witnesses were either ward collation agent or local government collation agent, pointing out that  petitioners did not call either their polling unit agents or registered voters who voted at the polling units.

The judge also noted that the petitioners had alleged that relevant details were not filled in the election documents before the commencement of voting.

Justice Kpochi said having so alleged, the petitioners were expected to call polling unit agents and registered voters who voted in the affected polling units.

He said: “We hold that the failure of the petitioners to call polling agents, presiding officers or even registered voters was fatal to their case.

“The petitioners did not call any scintilla of evidence to  prove their claim that the relevant forms were not filled as required. The first to 14th witnesses gave  hearsay evidence because they were not near the polling units during the election.”

Justice Kpochi noted that the petitioners’ star witness was the Director of Research and Strategy, who did not play any role in the election.

He held that all the documents and materials tendered by the petitioners, including election documents and the bimodal voters accreditation system (BIVAS)  machines, were not demonstrated.

The judge added: “It is clear that the documents were dumped. No competent witness was called to give evidence on the documents. No eye witnesses, who witnessed how the election took place at the polling units were called.

“Where no witness is called to link the documentary evidence to the case of the petitioners, it is not the duty of the court to be scrutinising the documents tendered by parties.

“The bivas machines were clearly dumped and remained dormant. The machines were not demonstrated at trial nor did any witnesses testify on the content of the bivas machines,” he said.

The tribunal chairman said it was not for the tribunal to be looking into the documents and bivas machines tendered.

Justice Kpochi also resolved the second issue, which was whether Okpebholo won the election with majority of lawful, votes against the petitioner.

He made similar observations about the quality of evidence presented by the petitioners and held that they failed to prove that leg of their petition.

Justice Kpochi noted that by the quality of evidence led by the petitioners, it showed that they did not appreciate what was expected of them to prove their allegations.

The first judgment of the day was in the petition by AA and Onoaje, which it dismissed for being without merit.

The petitioners had claimed among others, that AA’s candidate was excluded from the election on the grounds that INEC accepted details of the party’s candidates from one Kenneth Eze, who they claimed was not the party’s national chairman.

They had  also alleged that AA was not allowed to nominate a lawful candidate for the election since the electoral commission failed to accept details of the candidate whose nomination form Omoaje signed as national chairman.

Justice Kpochi held that the petitioners failed to prove their allegations of non-compliance and corrupt practices.

He also said that Omoaje, having not been a candidate in the election, lacked the locus standi (the right to approach the tribunal) to challenge the outcome of the election.

The tribunal also found that having admitted in the course of proceedings that AA participated in the election, the petitioners could no longer complained of exclusion.

It upheld the notices of preliminary objection filed by INEC, APC and Okpebholo, challenging the competence of the petition.

The tribunal held that the issues raised in the petitions related to leadership dispute within the AA, which did not constitute an issue over which an election tribunal possesses jurisdiction.

It also held that the issues were pre-election related, which had become statute barred as at when the petition was filed.

The tribunal proceeded to decline jurisdiction and struck out the petition.

The tribunal has commenced delivery of its judgment in the petition by Accord Party (A).

In its third judgment, the tribunal also dismissed the petition by the Accord Party.

Justice Kpochi held that the petitioners – (A) and its candidate in the election, Bright Enabulele  – failed to establish their claims with sufficient evidence as required.

The tribunal noted that the petitioners made weighty allegations of thuggery, ballots stuffing, harassment and voters’ molestation, but failed to name a single perpetrator.

It further noted that the same petitioners, who sought to be declared winners of the election,  claimed that the election was conducted without compliance with the Electoral Act.

    APC hails verdict

The APC leadership hailed the judgment, saying that it is sound.

The National Secretary, Dr. Ajibola Basiru, a Senior Advocate, said in a statement that “the verdict is in consonance with well settled principles of law already established in a plethora of cases as to the nature of oral and documentary evidence required from a petitioner to establish allegations of non-compliance with the provisions of Electoral Act.”

He stressed: “Specifically the tribunal rightly held that the petitioners merely dumped documents including BVAS without evidence to link them to the allegations made by the petitioners.

“The decision of the Tribunal that petitioners witnesses are not competent witnesses to give evidence in support of the allegations made by the petitioners is unassailable in view of well established case-law.

“The judgment is an affirmation of the mandate freely given by the Edo people to the APC and its candidates, Senator Monday Okhpebolo and Hon Idahosa.”

    Wike congratulates Okhpebolo

The Minister  of Federal Capital Territory (FCT),  Nyesom Wike, congratulated Okpebholo over the  judgment, urging him to avoid distraction.

He said the governor should remain focused and  avoid being distracted by those who “are only interested in getting power through the back doors.”

Wike, a PDP chieftain, said in a statement by his Senior Special Assistant (SSA), on Public Communications and Social Media,  Lere Olayinka, that the confirmed the mandate freely given to the governor by the people.

He said the victory was for the people,  who elected Okpebholo, urging him to be committed to their service.

Reiterating his confidence in Okpebholo’s ability to bring succor to the people,  Wike added: “I believe in him and with the way he has started, I believe that his government will impact positively on Edo State and its people.”

    Ighodalo: the struggle continues

Ighodalo said the tribunal judgment is not the end, adding that the struggle continues.

The PDP candidate said in a statement that he would not waver in the pursuit of justice.

The statement reads: “The Edo Governorship Election Petition Tribunal has delivered its judgment in our petition challenging the outcome of the September 21st, 2024 governorship election in our dear state.

“While we all may not agree with the verdict, we however remain steadfast in our belief that the rule of law must remain the bedrock of our democracy.

“Our pursuit of justice in this regard is an affirmation of our firm belief that the right of the good people of Edo State to freely choose their leaders through a credible, free and fair electoral process must never be compromised.

“As an avowed democrat, I respect the judiciary as the last hope of the common man, and I urge all of you, our dear good people of Edo State, to remain peaceful, calm and law-abiding in the aftermath of this Judgement.

“However, let it be clear: this is not the end of our journey, but the beginning of a greater struggle for justice, democracy, and the sanctity of the people’s mandate freely conferred on my running mate, Barr. Osarodion Ogie and I on the platform of our great Party, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP)

“From the very beginning, your massive show of support, sincere love and belief in our shared vision for a prosperous Edo State have been the driving force behind this journey.”

“For us, it has never been about the realisation of a personal ambition but about our conviction to create a clear Pathway to Prosperity for all Edo People while upholding the foundational values of democracy, justice, and the will of the people.

“I therefore, instructed my legal team to proceed to the Court of Appeal to challenge this decision which we consider a huge travesty of justice. This is not about me or any single individual; it is about the very essence of democracy, the preservation of our collective right to freely determine our future, and the legacy we leave for generations unborn.

“We remain resolute. We remain committed. And we shall not waver in our pursuit of truth and justice.”

The Edo State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal has affirmed the election of Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as Edo Governor.

In three judgments on Wednesday, the three-member tribunal held that the petitions by the the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and it’s candidate, Asue Ighodalo; the Action Alliance (AA) and its National Chairman, Adekunle Omoaje, and the Accord Party and its candidate in the election, Bright Enabulele (AP)  were without merit.

The petitioners had claimed among others, that AA’s candidate was excluded from the election on the grounds that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) accepted details of the party’s candidates from one Kenneth Eze, who they claimed was not the party’e National Chairman.

They had  also alleged that AA was not allowed to nominate a lawful candidate for the election since INEC failed to accept details of the candidate whose nomination form Omoaje signed as the National Chairman of the party.

The tribunal, in its judgment on Wednesday, held that the petitioners failed to prove their allegations of not complained and corrupt practices.

It also held that Omoaje, having not been a candidate in the election, lacked the locus standi (the right approach the tribunal) to challenge the outcome of the election.

The tribunal also found that having admitted in the course of proceedings that AA participated in the election, the petitioners could no longer complained of exclusion.

Earlier in the judgment, the tribunal uphold the notices of preliminary objection filed by INEC, APC and Okpebholo, challenging the competence of the petition.

The tribunal has commenced delivery of its judgment in the petition by Accord Party (AP).

In its third judgment, the tribunal also dismissed the petition by the Accord party.

held that the petitioners – AP and its candidate in the election, Bright Enabulele – failed to establish their claims with sufficient evidence as required.

The tribunal noted that the petitioners made weight allegations of thuggery, ballots stuffing, harassing and voters’ molestation, but failed to name a single perpetrator.

It further noted that the same petitioners, who sought to be declared winners of the election,  claimed that the election was conducted without compliance with the Electoral Act.

The tribunal held that there was no meaningful evidence for it to act upon to nullify the election of Okpebholo and APC and subsequently dismissed the petition in its entirety.
