  • Why I hit the ground running, by Okpebholo

Why I hit the ground running, by Okpebholo

Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo, spoke with reporters on governance, security, economy, agriculture, education, and infrastructural development, EMMANUEL BADEJO reports.

    Road infrastructure in Edo State

Before i came in, the state was totally cut off due to the bad road, and my administration would not allow that to happen. We have no time to waste. We have no time to waste as we turn Edo into a construction site and are ready to partner with reputable organisations. We promised our people that we would fix and construct the roads. Edo people should expect good things to happen. We will fix our roads and ensure that our people enjoy the dividends of democracy. The failed portion at Upper Mission Extension Road was terrible when we took over. My administration is determined to solve the problem and put smiles on the faces of Edo people. When i took over, President Tinubu was not happy with the way Edo State was going. But you can see that we are already working as he will join us to fix Edo State and that we must surely accomplish. The Ramat flyover), for instance, will transform the economy and social fortunes of our capital city and indeed Edo state. Ramat Park is a gateway to Benin City and other parts of the country. This is the first fly-over we are constructing, and we are going to construct more. There will be one by Dawson Road junction and another one by Sapele Road/Adesuwa Road junction. Ramat Park Fly-Over will provide a new lease of life for motorists in Benin city and communities along these two corridors; the Benin-Auchi expressway and the Benin-Asaba express We have instructed the contractor to work day and night to ensure the road is completed on time. My job is not to sit in the office, I promise Edo people practical and good governance, and sitting in the office will not allow me to achieve that. So, I have to monitor every project embarked on by this administration to ensure quality of work and also ensure the work is delivered on time and to specification. I am elected to work and must work for Edo people. The reason why Edo people elected me as governor is to work for them, and that is exactly what i am doing for them by the grace of God Almighty.

    Federal Roads in Edo State

We are working to fix the failed portion of Federal roads. We have fixed Obadan Junction, Benin-Auchi road. This road is a gateway between the South East and Northern part of the country. This is a Federal road in Edo State, and it does not really matter. People from Edo State, Eastern, and Northern parts of the country use this road. Doing this road (Obadan junction) will boost the credibility of our party and the government of the All Progressives Congress (APC). Nothing is wrong in fixing this road for Edo people. I am very honoured and very happy seeing the remedial work on the Benin/Ekpoma/Auchi Express Way. The President promised to fix this road and now has matched words with actions, and people and Edo people in general are happy with this development of this road, which is now passable. You can see what my administration has done in terms of fixing federal roads in the State. Initially, the road was not passable as several accidents were recorded on the Benin-Iruekpen federal road, both small and big vehicles, and lives were lost as well. Once upon a time, we had a government in Edo State that was used to placing signboards across all federal roads with the inscription ‘this is a federal road, bear with us’. But today, we know Edo people used these roads and it is now Edo roads and by the grace of God, we will continue to move forward to see that our people enjoy good roads across the State. For me, working for my people is the only thing that can give Edo people happiness and joy. Reducing the time of travel along this road is our achievement. A journey that will take up to four hours is now 45 minutes.

    Education

Do you remember when we went to one abandoned Ebomisi Secondary School in Ugbogiobo Ovia North East Local Governments area during my campaign? I had imagined that the former governor would have rebuilt the school, but nothing happened there. For me, this was not acceptable. The situation of Edo schools is terrible, and children attend these so-called EdoBest schools. For me, this is not acceptable. My administration will fix these schools. My administration will correct the wrong, make, and change the narratives of our schools in Edo State. Our job is to make Edo people happy and our children educated in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Education is the bedrock of development. For instance, take a look at Ambrose Alli University (AAU). It holds a special place in Edo State as the institution has produced the finest minds in Nigeria, and it’s our responsibility to restore its lost glory and ensure its continuous existence. One of the first steps my administration took in restoring the lost glory of the institution was to increase the monthly subvention from N41 million to N500 million. This is a bold step that reflects our commitment to the revival of AAU and also introduced special intervention to accelerate infrastructural development, ensuring that students and staff have the needed resources to strive. You can see the massive work ongoing across schools in Edo State. I have visited several schools and you can see for yourself the massive renovation, reconstruction and remodeling of the schools. Edo people are happy. We will continue to do more for the benefits of our people. By the time we would be one or two years in office, Edo State and its people would have experienced a lot of transformation across the State in the education and other sectors. When I was campaigning, I told Edo people that I would declare a state of emergency in our schools across the State.

    Security

As a government, our responsibility is to provide the people of the state with security. During my campaign, I placed security above all, and it’s an area of focus and priority for my administration because it is important. The issues of cultism dominate the discussion, and the rate of cultism is not acceptable. The issue of cultism is not acceptable in Edo State. We do not want to lose anybody, and we will be firm about this. We have ordered the security agencies to collaborate and ensure Edo is safe for all, but not safe for criminals. We charge them to smoke criminals out of the State wherever they are hiding and ensure the State is safe for all.

You are aware of the recent unfortunate incident in Uromi where some persons purporting to be members of a vigilance team, took the laws into their hands and murdered some people who were traveling home for the festivities.

It was a very distressing incident which tended to cast a blight on what we are doing in security.

I visited the area and also spoke with my brother-Governors of Kano and Katsina states and before then, we had even apprehended 14 persons who are currently under interrogation and appropriate further actions will be taken.

In Edo state, there is no room for savagery. There is no room for jungle justice and or mob attacks. We will never condone such behaviours. I won’t want to talk more on that so as not to jeopardize security investigations.

We have reorganized the Security Corps of the State. As soon as I came in, I purchased security vehicles equipped with modern gadgets. The challenges in the area of insecurity you see in Edo State are being addressed. I have also signed some bills into law to strengthen the security of our State. Kidnappers and cultists are on the run. When we took over government, cultism was a common thing in Edo State. We have addressed that now. Other security challenges we face will be addressed soon, I assure you.

    Economy

We are ready to provide an enabling environment for businesses in the State to strive. We urge investors to bring more investments to the State. My agenda is to develop Edo State and make it a better place than we met it. Key decisions have been taken, and more good decisions will still be taken to improve the lives of Edo people. We shall begin to provide interest-free loans to Edo traders. Our traders are the backbone of our economy, and we must support them with the capital to help boost their businesses and improve the State economy. The interest-free loans will help empower our traders, enhance growth, development, and stability, and improve the livelihoods of the people.

    Healthcare

There are challenges in the health sector, and we need to face the challenges head on and ensure a vibrant, efficient, and effective healthcare sector in Edo State. We need to work hard, face the challenges, and move the Ministry of Health forward. Moving the healthcare sector forward is a challenge we must face and ensure our people receive quality healthcare services. With hard work, commitment, and dedication, my administration would deliver the dividends of democracy to Edo people in the area of healthcare. After inspecting the facilities at Stella Obasanjo Hospital, it is clear that nothing was done here by the Obaseki led administration. They just painted the building and put air conditioners to deceive the people to think the building is completed. Construction work was ongoing when former governor Godwin Obaseki commissioned the Stella Obasanjo Hospital building. This is unacceptable. It is unfair. It is cheating.

    Tourism

I visited the water fountain built by Comrade Adams Oshiomole’s administration, but abandoned by the previous administration of Godwin Obaseki. I remember when Oshiomole was the governor of Edo State, how beautiful this place was. We want to clean up this place so that people can come here for site seeing and relaxation. This place has been abandoned for some time now. My administration wants to revive it so that Edo people can go there with their families to have a nice time during weekdays and holiday

    Culture

I will work closely with the traditional rulers to bring peace to Edo State. We have started writing the wrongs of the immediate past administration, and if you listen to news recently, we restored the statutory rights of the Oba of Benin Kingdom.

    Good Governance

It is obvious that my administration is set to make a huge difference in governance, which is my campaign promise to the good people of Edo State. We want to take up this challenge very responsibly because things can not remain the way they are. My administration is determined to raise the bar for good governance, infrastructural development, and social services for our citizens. Our governance is practical as well as our projects. It is what everybody can see, and we will continue to do more for Edo people with more projects that will benefit Edo people and ensure that they feel and enjoy the dividends of democracy. We have embarked on practical governance, doing what the people will see and benefit from. We will continue practical governance as my administration will embrace people-oriented policies and programs that will make life meaningful for Edo people.

    Agriculture

There are plans by my administration to revolutionize the agricultural sector through mechanized farming. We have started massive mechanized farming in Edo State. We are poised to ensure that food is available to all, even in these challenging times. Agriculture is vital to our State’s economy. Investing in mechanized farming, we will boost food production, create jobs, and ensure food security for our people. I want to thank the farmers at Iguoriakhi farm settlement because they have been farming before, but this time, we will farm together and produce food that will not only feed Edo State but also feed Nigeria. It is time for all of us to go back to the farm. Farming has become a very serious business, and together, we will produce the food and feed our people. My administration will provide the people with equipment, fertilizers, and support with resources to farm and produce food for the nation. We will have farms across the three Senatorial Districts of the State. As an administration, we are focused on farming. I have been talking to the governor of Niger State. He has made a mark in agriculture, and my administration wants to follow his footsteps to develop Edo State through agricultural activities. Mr president has asked Nigerians to farm and the farm initiative for Edo State citizens is very important as my administration increased agricultural budget from about N5 billion to N70 billion to create the enabling environment for the people to go back to farms. We have embarked on our drive to embrace agriculture, which will be used to grow and develop Edo economy. We have cleared large hectares of land as we are ready to clear more. We will clear about 3,000 hectares as we have embarked on the first stage. We still have similar farm settlements in Edo Central and Edo North. We are ready to farm, and we are not going back in line with Mr President’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which is part of feeding the nation. We have keyed into the agenda. As far as Edo is concerned, it is back to the farm.

14 suspects of Uromi killings for investigation, says Edo Governor, meets Barau

Edo Governor  Monday Okpebholo has paid a condolence visit to Deputy Senate President Senator Barau Jibrin, over the alleged killings of travellers in Uromi, Esan North East Local Government Area of Edo State.

The Governor was at the Maitama residence of Barau in Abuja on Monday.

A mob allegedly had intercepted the innocent travellers on their way to Kano State for Sallah celebrations, ransacked their vehicle and gruesomely murdered them on Thursday.

The victims who were hunters are from Kano State.

The Special Adviser to the Deputy President of the Senate on Media and Publicity, Alhaji Ismail Mudashir,  said the Governor extended condolences to Barau, who is from Kano State,  pledging that the State Government will assist the families of the victims.

The Edo Governor disclosed that the 14 suspects arrested in connection with the killings of the innocent travellers are to be taken to Abuja for further interrogation.

While assuring that the perpetrators will face the full wrath of the law, he described the killings of the innocent travellers as unfortunate and condemnable.

“It’s unfortunate that it happened in our state. We are here to say, to let you and other people know that we are not happy.

“The ptresident is doing something drastic about this. He’s not happy also. The IG has swung into action. The DIG CID is in charge. So far, they have arrested 14 suspects.

“So they are bringing them to Abuja for interrogation. We have also set up a committee to see that we take care of the families of the deceased,” he said.

Responding, Barau said the perpetrators of the act must be brought to book to serve as a deterrent to others.

“We cannot undo what has been done. But we all want – all Nigerians, what they are looking forward to is to make sure that these people are arrested and brought to justice. And you are doing well in that direction.

“I’m also glad you’ve spoken about the fact that your government is ready to assist the families of those affected.

“I want you to continue to pursue the case so that all those who were involved in these barbaric actions are brought to justice. It’s a barbaric action, to say the facts.

“If they are brought to justice, it would serve as a deterrent to those who might want to do this in future.

“I know that people from other parts of the country have been staying with your people in Edo for centuries in a very conducive atmosphere and this barbaric act has never happened. I’m sure, under your watch, this will not happen again.

“I thank you very much. You’ve told me now that you’ll meet the Kano State governor today. This is very good.  Please continue what you are doing. Mr. President also told us that you are doing very well in this direction, and we have seen it because, as I said, we have spoken several times on this matter in the last 72 hours,” he said.

Killing of hunters in Edo: Okpebholo suspends security chief, illegal vigilance groups

Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo yesterday suspended the Commander of the Security Corps, Friday Ibadin, a retired Commissioner of Police.

He also ordered the suspension of illegal vigilante groups, following the review of the preliminary report on the killing of 16 travelling hunters at Uromi, the headquarters of Esan Northeast Local Government Area.

The Secretary to Government, Umar Ikhilor, a lawyer, said in a statement that lawlessness would not be permitted under the guise of maintaining security.

The killings, which sparked uproar in the state, was condemned by the Chief of Defence Staff, Gem Christopher Musa, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and the Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrosheed Akanbi Telu.

Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf said a delegation from the state would be in Edo today to assess the situation.

Illegal security outfits suspended, says Edo govt

Ikhilor lamented that the local vigilante group that killed the hunters was not registered.

He said: “It is to be reiterated that the local vigilance group involved in the gruesome killing of 27th March, 2025 was operating illegally, as it was never profiled or registered with Edo State Security Corps.

“Its actions do not reflect the core values, character and principles of the Okpebholo administration, or the objectives of the corps, as enshrined in the Edo State Security Corps Governance Law.

“Investigations into the killings are ongoing, and fourteen persons have been arrested so far, while there is an intense manhunt for others involved in the gruesome killing by a special team set up by the Inspector-General of Police.

“The Government of Edo State reiterates its belief in the constitutionally-guaranteed rights of citizens to move freely or engage in lawful businesses in any part of the country.”

Ikhilor disclosed that the state government was in touch with families of the victims, community leaders, and the government of Kano State, where the deceased hailed from.

He urged calm, assuring that the state government will ensure that justice is done in a most efficient, transparent, and proactive manner.

    Kano Govt’s delegation for Edo

The Kano State Government has dispatched a delegation to engage with the Edo Government and the Hausa community over the killings.

Yusuf, in a broadcast, condemned the barbaric act, saying that his administration would relentlessly pursue justice for the victims.

The delegation, he said, “will work to ensure justice is served and those responsible are held accountable.”

Yusuf  also said the affected individuals would receive full compensation.

He disclosed that Okpebholo had assured him that most of the suspected culprits have been apprehended, adding that investigation is ongoing.

He urged residents to remain law-abiding and refrain from any acts of retaliation, emphasising Kano’s reputation as one of the most peaceful states in the country.

Yusuf, who condone with the families of the victims and the state, described the incident as a “tragic and sad moment.”

    Musa condemns killing

Gen Musa, condemned the unfortunate killings in a statement by the Director of Defence Information, Brig -Gen. Tukur Gusau, saying that the incident was avoidable if the appropriate authorities were notified and involved in ascertaining the identity of the victims.

The CDS condoled with President Bola Tinubu, and the families of those who lost their lives.

He said Nigerians not to take laws into their hands, urging them to revert to constituted authorities in matters that affect security.

Musa said the Nigeria police, military, and other security agencies are well trained to handle such matters.

The defence chief assured Nigerians that the military would work closely with the police and other relavant security agencies to bring the perpetrators of the dastardly act to book.

He warned that all local hunters and vigilante groups should register with the police, DSS, military and any other agencies mandated by law to regulate the possession of fire arms.

He also called on vigilante groups to always revert to police for appropriate action.

CAN urges govt to ensure justice

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) described the killin as barbaric, urging the government to ensure that perpetrators are brought to book.

A statement by CAN President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh said: “We must address a recent and devastating incident. A few days ago, 16 hunters travelling from Port Harcourt to Kano to mark Eid-el-Fitr were brutally murdered by a mob in Uromi, Edo State.

“Mistaken for kidnappers due to the traditional hunting tools they carried, these innocent men suffered a horrific fate—beaten and burned alive in an act of mob violence, denied any chance of due process.

“This extrajudicial killing is a grievous violation of human rights and a chilling reminder of the dangers of lawlessness. We extend our deepest sympathy to the families of these hunters, who now mourn the loss of their loved ones taken in such a senseless and brutal manner. Our thoughts are also with all families affected by recent acts of violence and injustice across Nigeria.

“These tragedies inflict profound pain and could erode trust in our legal system, highlighting the urgent need for effective law enforcement and the upholding of the rule of law. The government must act decisively to address these failures and ensure justice is served.

“In the face of such challenges, we must not succumb to despair. Instead, let this moment spur us to unite for peace and security. I urge all Nigerians to practise charity, support those in need, and stand together against violence and division. Specifically, we call on the government to conduct a thorough investigation into the killing of the sixteen hunters and ensure the perpetrators face justice.

“Leaders at all levels must also promote understanding and reject mob actions. CAN reaffirms its commitment to dialogue and cooperation with Muslim leaders, fostering interfaith initiatives to build a stronger nation.”

     Oluwo: Nigerians deserve protection

Oba Akanbi, who lamented the murders, said “Nigerians should be protected, safe and secured regardless the ethnicity and religion.”

Oluwo said the traditional rulers and community leaders should also embrace Nigerians regardless of their ethnicity, race and religion.

He said:“I condemned jungle justice of the 16 hunters in all ramifications. This is not good at all, they(slain hunters) are Nigerians, and they should be protected anywhere, Nigerians are free to move anywhere, we are all Nigerians, and we should be saved and secure regardless of ethnicity and religion.

“This is about accepting ourselves no matter our the race, it is about love, Nigeria is for Nigerians.”

    Lawmaker condemns incident

The Spokesman for the House of Representatives, Akintunde Rotimi,  condemned the lynching of hunters,  urging the government to apprehend the killers.

Rotimi, who represents Ekiti North I (Ikole/Oye) Constituency, expressed his displeasure at Ayede-Ekiti during the 2nd Ramadan Annual Lecture, organised by him in honour of the National Vice President of Ansar-ud-Deen Society of Nigeria, Aare Sulaiman Ogunlayi.

He said l security agencies should bring the perpetrators to justice, stressing that Nigerians should be able to coexist peacefully regardless of ethnic or religious differences.

Rotimi added: “Nigerians should be able to coexist peacefully regardless of our cultural and traditional differences. There must be love and harmony among us.

“On behalf of the people of Ikole/Oye-Ekiti Federal Constituency, we condemn the violent mob attack on those travellers in Edo State. We call on security agencies to ensure that the perpetrators are identified and brought to justice.”

Edo varsity management hails Okpebholo for favourable policies

The management of Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma has hailed Governor Monday Okpebholo for the favourable policies initiated by him, which have helped to reposition the institution.

The management, through the Principal Assistant Registrar/Head, Information and Public Relations, Otunba Mike Aladenika, yesterday in Benin, while meeting with reporters, said following Okpebholo’s special intervention, the state university was rising again.

He noted that with the Okpebholo-appointed Governing Council, chaired by Chief Dan Orbih, the higher institution was being repositioned.

He also spoke about the dilapidated structures in the university, noting that for the eight years of the administration of former Governor Godwin Obaseki, not much was done to address the challenge.

The spokesman said: “It would not have been out of place, if Obaseki’s government had used its contractors to build or renovate structures and subsequently inaugurate and hand them over to AAU, but such never happened.

“The positions of principal officers of the higher institution have been declared vacant. Persons with prerequisite qualifications are urged to apply, as advertised by the Governing Council.

“With members of the Governing Council on board, the school environment is peaceful, as the students and lecturers are carrying out their learning activities in a friendly environment.

“It should be known that workers of AAU are still on N18,000 minimum wage, while their counterparts in the civil service are on N70,000, which is provocative.”

Aladenika pleaded with Okpebholo’s administration to continue its intervention in the development of AAU, to move the higher institution forward.

Rivers emergency declaration: Okpebholo faults Jonathan

    • Decision proactive, necessary, says governor, minister
    • Fubara at church service

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s declaration of emergency rule in Rivers State got more backing at the weekend.

Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo lashed out at former President Goodluck Jonathan for criticising the presidential action.

Information and National Orientation Minister Mohammed Idris defended the “painful but responsible” action.

Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga said a Rivers State without the emergency declaration, given the way things were going, could be better imagined.

Dr. Jonathan, speaking at the weekend, described the emergency declaration in Rivers as an abuse of power.

He went ahead to blame everybody, saying: “The executive, legislature and the judiciary know the correct thing to do but they are refusing to do it.”

Okpebholo, speaking during the kick-off of the 125-kilometre Benin-Auchi road yesterday, described ex-President Jonathan as not decisive when he was President, hence, his criticism of the proactive step by President Tinubu.

He said the declaration of emergency had saved Nigeria’s economy.

The governor said: “The man criticising President Tinubu did not take a similar step when he heard that they were going to kidnap the Chibok girls in 2014. It is better for a President to be proactive. The single decision taken by President Tinubu saved the economy of Nigeria.”

The Edo Governor added: “What President Tinubu did in Rivers State is a welcome development, to ensure peace in the Niger Delta.

“The decision he took to declare a state of emergency in Rivers State is in the best interest of Nigerians.

“When crude oil pipelines in Rivers State were being blown by militants, what did Nigerians expect Mr. President to do on the nation’s economic sustenance?”

Continuing, Okpebholo said: “When Jonathan was Nigeria’s President, the country’s total annual budget was not more than N1.6 trillion, but the N1.6 trillion is what we are sharing monthly (from the Federation Account) in this nation today. That is a man that has vision.”

It was the second time in five days that Okpebholo would back the presidential action.

On Thursday, he dissociated himself from the criticism of the presidential action by the Southsouth Governors Caucus.

He thanked the President for the ongoing Federal road projects in the state, adding that when Dr. Jonathan, a son of the Niger Delta, was President, Edo was not remembered.

    Minister defends Tinubu

Idris told The Nation last night that: “The president has no intention whatsoever to take over the governance of Rivers State. He has no intention to appoint a governor for Rivers State.

“Rivers belongs to the people of the state. Just like all the other states of the federation have their governors and are functioning, the President also wants Rivers to function effectively.”

The minister explained that President Tinubu took a “very responsible but very painful decision” as governance in the state had collapsed.

Read Also: IG warns against unlawful detention

He explained that the House of Assembly was non-functional, while the executive branch was facing serious difficulties.

“The way democracy is designed is that the three arms of government must work together, and one will be checking the other.

“So, we cannot have just the executive functioning and say we have a functional democracy.

“We didn’t have that, and therefore, the president had to act,” he said.

Idris stressed that President Tinubu relied on constitutional provisions to exercise his powers, emphasising that the situation had reached a critical point that necessitated urgent intervention.

“Those who designed our constitution envisaged that this kind of situation could arise, and that was why they made the provision for it.

“The President relied on the constitution to exercise his powers and take action,” he stated.

According to him, the President acted in the best interest of Rivers people to prevent further descent into chaos and violence.

“It would have been irresponsible for the president to allow the slide into violence that we were seeing in Rivers State.

“At what point would he have intervened? The president had to responsibly step in to ensure that law and order, and governance, were restored in the interest of the people of Rivers State.”

The minister assured that the President will not keep the emergency rule in place longer than necessary.

“As soon as he assesses that sanity has returned to Rivers State, he will ensure the restoration of all democratic structures,” Idris assured.

    ‘Imagine Rivers State without emergency’

Onanuga, in an article on the Presidential declaration, wondered what Rivers would have become had President Tinubu hesitated to declare a state of emergency.

The political standoff between the State Assembly and Governor Siminalayi Fubara could have continued and degenerated into violence, he said.

Impeachment threats, he said, might have spurred attacks on lawmakers by the governor’s supporters, while militants in the creeks—primed to sabotage critical oil infrastructure—could have plunged Nigeria’s oil production back to pre-2023 lows.

Onanuga said sensational reporting of the crisis and opportunistic litigation would have inflamed tensions further, paralysing governance and risking lives.

“Schools and hospitals would shutter; investors would flee. We can only imagine the human and economic toll.

“Today, thanks to the president’s intervention, Rivers State can breathe again.

“Political tensions have eased, banal headlines have quietened, and stakeholders—encouraged by the newly-appointed administrator—are charting a path to lasting peace.

“Critics who argue the crisis ‘did not yet warrant’ emergency rule ignore a stark truth: waiting for the breakdown of law and order to escalate into anarchy before acting is like withholding firefighters until a house burns to ashes.

“A responsible leader like President Tinubu, who swore an oath to protect the constitution and corporate existence of the country, cannot fail to act when a constituent part of the Federation is careering towards the precipice.”

Fubara makes first public appearance after suspension

Suspended Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, made his first public appearance after he was temporarily swept out of power.

Fubara attended a Church Service at the Salvation Ministry, in Port Harcourt dousing speculations surrounding his whereabouts.

Fubara, who moved out of the Government House on Wednesday and had not been seen since then, showed up at the Salvation Ministry and was received by a senior pastor, who led him into the church to join the service.

He was driven into the church premises on a minimal convoy with no flag and no official seal of the governor’s office.

A statement by his Chief Press Secretary (CPS), Nelson Chukwudi, confirmed that Fubara attended a special prayer, worship and thanksgiving service.

The statement said the governor was accompanied by top politicians, major stakeholders, elders and leaders of the State, and associates to express gratitude to God for His love, mercy and unwavering support amid the festering political challenges.

Those who accompanied the governor are the President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Senator John Azuta Mbata; former Deputy National Chairman of the PDP, Dr Sam Sam Jaja, Chief Orits Onyiri, Chief Mike Elechi and Chief David Briggs.

Others are Dr Tamunosisi Gogo-Jaja, Amaopusenibo Fubara Hart, Chief Theodore Georgewill, Hon Kingston Sylvanus, former Mayor of Port Harcourt City,  ]Ezebunwo Ichemati; former Ikwerre Local Government Council Chairman, Israel Abosi; former Emohua Local Government Council Chairman, Chief David Omereji; among others.

“The church service, a testament to his deep faith and belief in God as the ultimate dispenser of justice, was an extraordinary session of worship, prayers, and thanksgiving, to appreciate the Lord and acknowledge His never-failing gifts to humanity,” the statement said.

The service was led by the Presiding Pastor of the church, David Ibiyeomie and featured soul-lifting songs, scriptural exhortations, and prayers for continued peace, progress, and prosperity in Rivers State.

A special prayer session was also held for the governor shortly after the service.

Fubara, however, did not speak in church or with reporters after the service.

Okpebholo hails Tinubu’s courage, lauds State of Emergency in Rivers

Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, who recently marked his first 100 days in office, has praised President Bola Tinubu’s leadership, describing him as more courageous than former President Goodluck Jonathan.

Speaking in Benin yesterday, Okpebholo commended Tinubu’s recent declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, calling it a bold decision made in the best interest of Nigerians.

Okpebholo, who represents Edo Central Senatorial District, made the remarks while representing Tinubu at the kick-off of the reconstruction of the 125-kilometre Benin-Asaba Expressway.

The project will expand the road to ten lanes between Ring Road, Benin, and Benin Bypass, and six lanes onward to Asaba, Delta State’s capital, with a 30-month completion target.

The event attracted key dignitaries, including Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun; Delta State Deputy Governor, Chief Monday Onyeme, representing Governor Sheriff Oborevwori; Works Minister, Senator Dave Umahi; and Olufunso Adebiyi, Permanent Secretary at the Federal Ministry of Works.

Also in attendance were Senator Adams Oshiomhole, Edo Deputy Governor Dr. Dennis Idahosa, Edo House of Assembly Speaker Chief Blessing Agbebaku, and Adeniran Ajakaiye, Managing Director of Africa Plus Partners Nigeria Limited, the road’s developer.

Edo governor said: “Comrade Adams Oshiomhole and I were contesting in the last elections, but President Bola Ahmed Tinubu asked Comrade Oshiomhole to bring me to his office, which he did. President Tinubu loves Edo State so much, such that any opportunity I had with him, the first thing he would ask me would be: ‘How is Edo?’ The second question would be: ‘What of the Oba of Benin, Omo N’Oba N’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, Oba Ewuare II?’

“The Honourable Ministers (Wale Edun and Dave Umahi), please tell President Bola Tinubu that we will take his 2027 re-election campaigns to other states of Nigeria. 2027 is a big deal in Edo State. 2027 is sealed for President Tinubu. 18 over 18 (Edo Local Government Areas), we are going to deliver for Mr. President, because we once had President from the Niger Delta Region (Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, from Otuoke in Ogbia LGA of Bayelsa State), he never thought about us in Edo State, and he never remembered that there was this part of the crude oil and gas-rich region.

“Also tell President Tinubu that what he did in Rivers State is a welcome development, to ensure peace in the Niger Delta. The decision he took to declare a state of emergency in Rivers State was in the best interest of Nigerians. When crude oil pipelines in Rivers State were being blown by militants, what did Nigerians expect Mr. President to do on the nation’s economic sustenance?

“The man (ex-President Jonathan) criticising President Tinubu did not take similar step, when we heard that they were going to kidnap the Chibok girls. It is better for a President to be proactive. The single decision taken by President Tinubu saved the economy of Nigeria.

“When Jonathan was Nigeria’s President, the total annual budget of Nigeria was not more than N1.6 trillion, but the N1.6 trillion is what we are sharing monthly in this nation today. That is a man that has vision. Help tell my father (President Tinubu) thank you very much.

“I thank President Tinubu on his initiative on the reconstruction of the Benin-Asaba Expressway, through Private-Public Partnership (PPP), and for not putting Nigeria’s money into the project. When a businessman invests in a project, he will ensure that there is completion.

“On the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Super-highway, I also want to express gratitude to President Tinubu. Who else can do that? The son of Niger Delta (Dr. Jonathan) did not remember the capital-intensive project. President Tinubu is embarking on many people-oriented projects throughout Nigeria. I thank President Tinubu for being a father to the nation.”

Okpebholo also described Edo is a peculiar state, in view of its being the gateway to the nation, while stressing that if Edo’s roads were bad, the state and nation’s economy would equally be bad.
