Edo gov asks Okpebholo to wait till Nov 12 to begin governance

Edo state governor, Godwin Obaseki, through his special adviser on media projects, Crusoe Osagie, has asked the governor-elect, Senator Monday Okpebholo, to wait till November 12, this year to begin governance.

He cautioned Okpebholo against making spurious allegations and claims aimed at creating the impression that there were two governors in Edo.

Osagie, yesterday in Benin, described the statement by a “so-called” special assistant to the Edo governor-elect as spurious and was not only incoherent and riddled with fake news, but contained unfounded conjectures, targeted at undermining Obaseki’s government.

He said: “A self-styled special assistant, who nobody knows, issued a statement to create the impression that there were two governors in Edo State. Assuming he is really speaking for the Governor-elect, Monday Okpebholo, the immodesty is most reprehensible. He made wild allegations, which he could not substantiate because they were barefaced lies.

“It is quite understandable that these elements are angling for jobs, but there must be some sort of clear-headedness and not this resort to outlandish and amateurish muddling.

“The next administration begins on November 12, 2024, and actors representing the incoming administration should wait for this date to come, before they begin to govern, as there cannot be two governors of Edo State at the same time.”

Okpebholo, in a statement on Wednesday night, accused Obaseki’s administration of massive looting and property vandalism.

Edo governor-elect also told banks and other financial institutions to avoid approving loans to any government official in the outgoing Obaseki-led administration.

In addition to the advisory issued to financial institutions, Okpebholo also raised the alarm that there were reports of ongoing looting of government assets such as vehicles, furniture, and rice palliatives by some unnamed officials in the outgoing administration.

He said: “It is sad that barely one month to handover, the out-going administration of Governor Godwin Obaseki is still allegedly obtaining loans from banks and other financial institutions under very shady headings.

“We are also aware of the massive looting and vandalism of property, including vehicles, furniture, gadgets, household utensils, and even carpets from offices and residences of the Edo State Government.

“This unacceptable behaviour undermines the trust and faith of our citizens in those entrusted to serve them in the past eight years.”

Edo governor-elect also called on the relevant authorities, including the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC), the Department of State Services (DSS), and the police, to thoroughly probe the allegations and ensure those found culpable were held accountable.

Okpebholo pleaded that assets in the Government House, Government Reservation Area (GRA), Benin, and offices should be protected from vandals, while promising that the incoming administration would continue to monitor the situation, until the last day of the outgoing administration.

  • AFCON 2025: Super Eagles can beat Libya without Osimhen , says Rohr

AFCON 2025: Super Eagles can beat Libya without Osimhen , says Rohr

Erstwhile Super Eagles trainer, German coach Gernot Rohr, believes Nigeria have quality players to beat the Mediterranean Knights of Libya in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON)  double header  with the first leg in Uyo on Friday and reverse  fixture next Tuesday.

Four-point Super Eagles  are top of Group D after  the opening two matches  following a 3-0 win against Rohr’s Cheetahs of Benin in Uyo and the goalless draw away to Amavubi of Rwanda in Kigali last month.

Already, interim coach Austin Eguavoen has  named  23players  sans injured scoring ace, Victor Osimhen, for  the two games against Libya  but Rohr is of the view  that  that Super Eagles can  still  weather the storm against the battle-hardened North Africans.

“Of course, Libya is not easy to play,” Rohr, one of  the oldest  European coaches on the continent, warned. “They are a team with lots of temperaments and  character ; and don’t forget they have even changed to a local coach  as such, Nigeria must be careful.”

Be that as it may, Rohr surmised  that  the Super Eagles on their good day should be able to overwhelm  the Libyans  with  the likes of rave-of-the moment Ademola Lookman as well as Bundesliga star, Victor Boniface in  their fold.

“ Normally,  Nigeria  should be able to win  the upcoming two games if they are playing at their level but as said, it’s easier said  than done especially if they go for the return match.

“ Away matches are alas difficult  but I believe they (Super Eagles) can do it  even without Osimhen; that’s my opinion,” he said.

Meanwhile, Rohr  who is already leading the revival of the Beninese national team, said his major concern  is how The Cheetahs can navigate  the upcoming fixtures against the Amavubi of Rwanda.

Benin will host the first game on Friday in their adopted home in Abidjan while they  play the revers tie  next Tuesday in Kigali.

“ Of course, my focus is on our two games  against Rwanda,” Rohr continued.“ They are also a very good team especially with their goalless draw against Nigeria.

“ I’m already in Abidjan and I was watched one of our strikers with ASEC Mimosas  and he scored the only goal in their win against Olympique Sport , so we are also preparing.”

Okpebholo assures residents of action from Nov 12

Edo State Governor-elect, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has assured residents that his administration would hit the ground running from November 12, to bring about development and progress in all sectors.

Okphebholo, the representative of Edo Central Senatorial District, yesterday in Auchi, during his appreciation visit, said he was committed to revamping sectors across the three senatorial districts,  thereby turning the state into a construction site.

He noted that a lot needed to be done to reposition Edo on the path of development and progress.

The governor-elect decried the gory state of things in Edo, alleging that the state had been on a developmental standstill since the exit of Senator Adams Oshiomhole on November 12, 2016.

He promised to address the issues plaguing Edo, immediately after his inauguration.

Okphebholo vowed to declare a state of emergency on road construction, health care delivery, educational sector and agricultural reforms, saying his administration would not give excuses for failure, ‘’since Edo residents are tired of seeing billboards that depict hopelessness and cluelessness on their strategic roads.’’

He said: “The reason I am here is not just to thank you for your overwhelming support during the September 21 governorship election in Edo State that returned me as your governor-elect, but also to reassure you that all that we promised during the campaigns will be delivered speedily.

Edo state governor-elect, Senator Monday Okpebholo, on Wednesday, October 2, visited Governor Hope Uzodimma at the Imo State Government House in Owerri to thank him for his support during the election.

Okpebholo, who was accompanied by his deputy, Hon. Dennis Idahosa; the senator representing Edo North, Adams Oshimhole, and the All Progressives Congress (APC) Chairman in Edo State, Jarrett Tenebe said the next step was to begin the development of Edo State.

He thanked the governor for his crucial role that led to his victory at the recently concluded September 21 governorship election.

He said Governor Uzodimma has proven himself a “father, a leader of APC, and a brother” and that he has shown that he is a dependable ally.

Okpebholo said he was in Government House with his leader, Senator Adams Oshomole, his Deputy-elect, the chairman of APC Edo State, and others, to express their gratitude and “to say a big thank you.”

He said now that they have won the election, the next step is to develop Edo State and that they were happy to visit Governor Uzodimma to receive his blessings ahead of the assumption of office.

He added that the Governor’s blessings would complement that of the Oba of Benin who had directed them to come and thank him as well as thank God for his grace.

The Governor-elect seized the opportunity to invite Governor Uzodimma to his inauguration on November 12, 2024, saying that Sen Uzodimma will perform the role of a father he is in the APC family.

In his response, Governor Uzodimma warmly welcomed Sen Okpebholo on behalf of the Government and people of Imo State and thanked them for finding it fit and necessary to visit him.

The governor said it is a thing of joy that APC won the election in Edo State and expressed his happiness, noting that “the entire population and members of APC of Edo State and Nigeria, in general, are all happy for the victory.”

Governor Uzodimma congratulated him and all members of APC and citizens of Edo State he will be leading as their governor, and prayed God to give him the wisdom to do those things he promised during his campaign.

He advised him to “remember to give Edo State a new look, to bring prosperity and development and be able to justify the confidence reposed in him by the leaders of APC and the entire Edo indigenes.”

He also prayed for the Governor-elect and his team, particularly that what they will use to achieve and develop Edo state, they will not lack.

Governor Uzodimma thanked Okpebholo for taking the pains to come from Edo State to visit him and described it as “symbolic” and a gesture he must treasure for a long time.

He promised that as long as Okpebholo is a member of the APC, and is bringing progress to Edo, he as the Governor of Imo State and the people of Imo State, will continue to support him.

The governor said: “Go home with confidence that one with God is majority and with the kind of support and blessings you have gotten from the President, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and the people you don’t have any reason to be afraid because Edo people voted for you.”

Present at the visit were the Deputy Governor of Imo State, Lady Chinyere Ekomaru, the Secretary to the State Government, Chief Cosmos Iwu, and the Chief of Staff, Bar Nnamdi Anyaehie, among other top government officials.

  • Okpebholo and Sanwo-Olu

    Okpebholo and Sanwo-Olu

It was an important visit. The Governor-elect of Edo State met with the BOS of Lagos, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, in Lagos. But what the new governor can learn from Lagos are many. The BOS said he would ply Monday Okpebholo with the state’s developmental template and the ideas to help him save Edo from the ruins of Obaseki.

We can recall that Adams Oshiomhole did same once he became governor. He brought his team to understudy Lagos and borrowed ideas that could fit into the rise of the Niger Delta state. When he was done as governor, Adams became a model of development Obaseki pooh-poohed. The man derailed and went his own way, the way of pain and regret from the people.

When the new governor-elect heard the sounds of victory last week, one of his promises was to go back to the Adams project.

That is all fine. He has something else to learn from the BOS, though. It is his ability to strike a balance between politics and governance, and he did it by working together with all the interests in the state’s politics. That was what plagued his predecessor. The BOS promised not to hark back to a time of division. He has managed the disparate forces who worked for his victory the first time. They liked him so much that they did not undermine his search for an encore. He is a sunny first citizen who governs without coattails of rancour.

The incoming helmsman of Edo State must learn that. It took a potpourri of interests to make him governor, including Adams, Ize-Iyamu, Dan Orbih, et al. All of them would want influence. Although Oscar Wilde says “all influence is immoral,” for him not to kill the morale of his stewardship, he must learn to navigate big egos. It should not turn into pounds of flesh for him. it takes emotional intelligence to pursue that with success. The BOS of Lagos can teach him one or two about the Omoluabi spirit that helped him to do that.

A former member of the House of Representatives and ex- governorship aspirant in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Omosede Igbinedion, has said Edo State governor-elect, Monday Okpebholo and his deputy, Dennis Idahosa, were grassroots politicians who knew the yearnings of the masses.

Igbinedion, in a congratulatory message to Senator Okpebholo, following his victory in the September 21 governorship election, said the mandate was divine and represented the will of the people.

She said the two legislators, from rural backgrounds, would best pilot the affairs of the state.

According to her, “Senator Okpebholo’s victory is a testament to his humility, effort, respect and commitment to the people of Edo State.’’

UPDATED: INEC presents certificates of return to Okpebholo, Idahosa

…we now have a governor who will respect people of Edo, says Oshiomhole

Edo state governor-elect, Senator Monday Okpebholo, and his deputy, Hon. Denis Idahosa on Thursday, September 26, received their certificates of return from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The certificates were presented to them by the national commissioner in charge of Edo state Prof. Rhoda Gumus, who represented the chairman of the commission, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu

They were accompanied to the INEC headquarters by the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, National Secretary, Senator Bashiru Ajibola, Minister for Niger Delta Affairs, Engr. Abubakar Momoh, Senator Adams Oshiomhole and the Deputy Governor of Edo state, Phillip Shuaibu, Senator Matthew Uroghide, General Cecil Esekhaigbe (retd), Senator Francis Alimikhena, Hon. Ogbeide Ihama, Hon. Omosede Igbinedion, Blessing Agbonmhere among others.

Speaking with newsmen after receiving his certificate of return, Senator Okpebhlo dedicated his victory to the people of Edo state, saying by voting for him, they have sent him on an assignment, adding that he was ready to deliver on the mandate freely given to him by the people of the state.

APC national chairman and former Kano state governor, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje expressed appreciation to the people of Edo state for returning the APC to the state, adding that the incoming governor has a blueprint to develop the state.

He said: “Edo state was an APC state. Later on, the governor as a nomadic politician, cross-carpeted to PDP, but today, we fought for it and we have recovered our state for the APC. I am so happy because essentially, our governor-elect and experienced politician, a distinguished senator who has a blueprint for the development of Edo state and we assure you, you will see great changes”.

Former Edo state governor and Senator representing Edo North, Senator Adams Oshiomhole said the people are excited because they now have a governor who will not be fighting with the traditional institution over artefacts, or demolishing a hospital only to replace it with a museum.

Oshiomhole said: “For us, it is a new dawn. When a lion moves into your home and starts destroying your things, the power of democracy is that because the process is tenured, when it is time, the ordinary people will now have the potency to make a verdict about the tenure of Gov. Obaseki and the verdict is now.

“It is not my personal feelings that matters now because that should be obvious. But one thing that I am happy about is that the Edo people now have a new governor who will not disrespect them as a people. We now have a governor who will not send pregnant women to prison, to deliver and die in prison over N20,000 mobile court fines.

“We now have a governor who understands that for the child of a casava farmer to rise to become a Senator or an Engineer or a Doctor, he must employ teachers in all the science subjects and build schools that will appeal to the young minds.

“We now have a governor who, without a MoU, will go and build that road that has been in bad shape across the state, clean the drainages ahead of the rainy season. In Edo state, we now a governor will respect the traditional institution that is the head of our culture. We now have a governor who will not be fighting over artefacts, but will rather be fighting for what is good for the Edo people.

“We now have a governor who will not demolish a hospital and replace it with a museum. We now have a governor who understands the value of education and will not destroy libraries and replace them with a market.

“For me, this is what excites Edo people and once they are happy, having had the rare privilege to superintend over that state, I am happy that they have reclaimed their state from the Lions that claiming to be iron which has now been melted with the combined force of Edo North, Edo Central, and Edo south.”

In his remarks, Ganduje stated: “When you’re working to reclaim your state, enduring sleepless nights and navigating through tough terrain, the effort is worth it. Edo was originally an APC state, but the former governor switched allegiances like a nomadic politician. We fought hard and have now successfully regained control of the state. We are especially thrilled because the governor-elect is a seasoned politician and distinguished senator with a solid plan for Edo’s development. We assure you that significant positive changes are on the way.”
