    MTV Base celebrates OLAMIDE

SUPERSTAR rapper, Olamide has been rated by MTV Base as its channel’s artiste of the month for March.

Broadcasting on DStv Channel 322, the renowned music platform picked the young artiste based on his meteoric rise as a rap artiste and his smooth blend of Yoruba and English lyrics, for which he continues to grow an impressive fan base.

Starting from the streets, Olamide came into spotlight in 2010 with the hit single, Eni Duro. Likened to the late Dagrin, Olamide’s acceptance by teeming fans has attracted a number of artistes who have featured him in their songs.

The artiste, who was recently a co-host on MTV Base’ weekly music chart, Official Naija Top Ten with MTV VJ, Ehiz, will be featured on the channel throughout the month of March. As a mark of endorsement, MTV Base has put the music video of Olamide’s Turn Up on high rotation.

“I’m so excited that MTV Base has decided to celebrate my work. It’s a big privilege to be honoured by a huge platform like MTV and it can only get better,” Olamide said during his interview on “Spotlight on Olamide”.

“Olamide is a perfect choice for the much sought-after ‘Artist of the Month’ slot in Nigeria. He’s already topped the MTV Base Original Naija Top 10 twice this year, and he’s enjoying heavy rotation on our channel. Olamide’s story represents the promise that the typical Nigerian artiste and youth hold and MTV Base is proud to be celebrating him this month,” said Head of Marketing and Communications at Viacom Africa, parent company of MTV Base, Colette Otusheso.

Otusheso revealed that the channel is also focusing on Olamide through a series of themed programmes about the artiste. These he said will be broadcast across Africa, every Thursday in March, on MTV Base, from 7PM.

The programmes include Olamide: 54 Seconds, Olamide: Top 5 Tips; Spotlight on Olamide; My Mixtape & Videography: Olamide; and The Truth: Olamide.

THOSE who may not recognize her by name would certainly remember the petit lady whose rap lyrics and mannerism rivals Olamide and Phyno with similar ‘craze’.

Interestingly too, she sings their style of the local language hip hop, and like Phyno, mostly in Igbo language.

The young lady, whose debut single was Church Agbasa is out with another effort she calls“Ego Uwa”.

Church Agbasa which brought her to critical acclaim, recorded so much downloads with iROKO TV as one of its vendors. Industry watchers had predicted that with consistency, the young girl has the prospect of taking the lead as Nigeria’s female emcee.

Those who understand the Igbo language say her lyrics are deep, and with the English language, it is easy to acknowledge that the code-mix is well blended. Expectedly, Ego Uwa may just ride on the success of Church Agbasa for a start.

“I stepped off the scene a bit to work on myself,” Splash stated. “Now I’m back to give my fans something fresh, deep and of course good music as usual.”

While away briefly, the artiste was said to have taken some time to re-strategise, moving base from her former label, the HMan-led August Pee Entertainment to join Brodock Music Group, home to the young talented kid, Vito.

“Splash is a brilliantly talented artiste, and we’re excited to have her with us at BMG,” says Smart, Chairman of Brodock Music Group.

“Ego Uwa which literally means ‘the world’s money’ is a feel good music, with a socially relevant message, lyrically deep, with the entire recipe that makes a good hip-hop music,” added the Brodock Music boss.

Planned for release on March 6, promoters say a video will follow in another two weeks. The video is said to have been shot on location in South Africa by Godfather Production.

Anger as Olamide fails to perform at OAU

Students of the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, who had anticipated to be thrilled by Hip-Hop sensation, Olamide, a guest artiste at a campus show tagged “Olamide in Kush Concert”, returned to their hostels disappointed, after several hours of waiting.

Weeks before the show, posters of the concert with pictures of the artiste were all over the campus while organiser Skinny Dee Entertainment and Kobina gave the show wide publicity on radio and social media networks.

Students came from Osogbo and other neighbouring cities to attend the show. The Afrika Amphi Theatre, where the show was supposed to take place, was locked at the time the show was to start. CAMPUSLIFE gathered that the concert did not hold due to some hiccups on the part of the organisers.

A source told our correspondent the organisers had “some issues” with the school management, which was why the later did not allow the facility to be used for the concert. It was also learnt that the organisers failed to secure a venue prior to event.

Our correspondent gathered that Olamide was in Ife for the programme and was lodged at Cameron Hotel by the organisers. But he could not perform due to the closure of the venue. Olamide confirmed his presence in Ife on Friday through his post on his Twitter account, which read: “Ife OAU…It’s for real. Baddo (his nickname) coming through tonight. Loud it.”

Disappointed students and youths, who came from far and near to watch the artiste’s live performance, paid N500 for ticket days before the event. When it dawned on them that the show would not hold, the students were enraged and promised to get a refund of their money.

The next day, the artiste apologised to his enraged fans on Twitter. He twitted: “Sorry about yesternight OAU students. The venue was shut down by some Oga at the top. Think they have got issues with the organisers. Love you all.”
