Oliseh: Super Eagles’ AFCON 2025 form is best in 20 years

Super Eagles legend Sunday Oliseh has heaped praise on the Nigerian national team, declaring their recent performances at the Africa Cup of Nations 2025 as the best he’s witnessed in 20 years.

In a recent interview circulating on X, Oliseh, a former captain and coach, said he was particularly impressed with the team’s displays against Uganda, Mozambique, and Algeria, displaying their tactical dominance and ability to pressure opponents.

He said, “I don’t know what’s going to happen in the next games. People were shouting the Tunisia game; for me, the Tunisia game was not really exceptional. The Tanzania game, for me, was not exceptional. I made my opinions clear. It’s no secret anymore.

“But the way these Super Eagles have played the last three games is the best I have seen Super Eagles play in 20 years. In 20 years, since 2006,” he declared. “You can say Sunday said this”.

Oliseh provided a breakdown of the tactical dominance displayed by the team under the current management.

“Ask anybody what he saw as a football analyst to watch our team, and they will tell you Nigeria now forces the opposition to play defensive non-stop”, he added.

He lauded the midfield trio of Frank Onyeka, Wilfred Ndidi, and Alex Iwobi, saying they are “hitting everything up in the midfield” and that Iwobi is “running the show like an orchestra”.

“Nigeria, they now put pressure on you from the defence, from the midfield, and Onyeka and Ndiidi are hitting everything up in the midfield. And look, Iwobi is just running the show like an orchestra,” he added, describing his enjoyment while watching.

“Commentating on Nigeria is the most difficult thing to do because you want to give all the compliments, but at the same time you’re saying, oh, no, no, no, I have to be neutral”, he added.

The Super Eagles face host Morocco in the semi-finals in Rabat, a match that promises to be a thrilling encounter between two footballing giants.

AFCON 2025:  Oliseh lauds Osimhen on captainship against Uganda

Former national team captain and coach, Sunday Oliseh, has  applauded Victor Osimhen’s overall  contribution as the Super Eagles  handed out a  3-1 defeat to the Cranes of Uganda in  their last Group C match at  the on-going  Africa cup of Nations (AFCON), Morocco  2025.

Osimhen who was  named as  the  Super Eagles’ vice-captain  to  Wilfred Ndidi on the eve of the  continental showpiece, skippered the team  on Tuesday in Fes-a day after his 27th birthday- and played  a pivotal role in the team’s  emphatic  win.

Despite not been among the goals against the  East Africans, Oliseh  who captained the Super Eagles  at the 2000 and 2002 AFCON tournaments, said  he was impressed  with  the rare  leadership qualities displayed by the Galatasaray  striker in yesterday’s victory.

“I’m really impressed  with  Osimhen; he’s really playing as a captain and I’m really  loving it,” Oliseh  who  served as a colour  commentator for the  tie between Nigeria and Uganda.

As a colour commentator provided expert insights, analysis and context during the live  broadcast as he filled in the gaps with strategic details, player histories and anecdotes to enrich the viewing experience beyond just describing the action.

He further said of Osimhen :“Despite being the top striker and captain,  he has been so unselfish in this match.”

Osimhen who had previously appeared at two previous AFCONs in 2019 and 2023, scored his first goal at the tournament  in  last Saturday’s  3-2 win over the Tunisia’s Eagles of Carthage.

Oliseh backs Super Eagles to strike gold at  AFCON  2025

Despite low expectations among the fans, former Super Eagles coach Sunday Oliseh has backed Nigeria to shine at this year’s AFCON in Morocco.

The Super Eagles failed to qualify for a second straight World Cup and many do not give them a chance at Morocco 2025.

Oliseh has been critical about the game is administered in Nigeria, but he will back the Super Eagles to fly high in Morocco.

“Contrary to what many may think, I am very optimistic about our chances at the AFCON,” he told The Observer. “To start with, the players have one goal in mind, which is the AFCON.

“I find it unfair that a lot of people are beating down on these boys. At the end of the day, they are representing us…some support (from Nigerians) would help.”

Nigeria begin their campaign for a fourth AFCON crown Tuesday evening in Fes against Tanzania.

  • Oliseh tips PSG ‘juggernauts’ to stop ‘wily’ Inter in UCL finale

Oliseh tips PSG ‘juggernauts’ to stop ‘wily’ Inter in UCL finale

An European  football night is not as big as a UEFA Champions League  final   as such, no quarter would be given and none would be asked  when  Internazionale Milano (Inter Milan) and Paris Saint Germain (PSG) clash tonight  at the  Allianz Arena in Munich. Nevertheless, former Nigeria International  and  notable tactician, Sunday Oliseh,  has predicted a close encounter  even as he tilted towards The Red-and-Blues (PSG)  than to  The Black and Blues (Inter) in a high-class preview with MORAKINYO ABODUNRIN

Erstwhile Super Eagles’ captain  and coach, Sunday Oliseh, believes the 2025 UEFA Champions League final between Internazionale Milano (Inter Milan) and Paris Saint Germain (PSG), is too close to call , adding there would be a little margin for errors  even as he pitched  Qatari-backed French giants as the front runner for the prestigious trophy  widely known as ‘the cup with the big ears’.

Tonight at the Munich Football Arena otherwise known as the Allianz Arena, in Munich, Germany, a battle-hardened Inter-led Simeone  Inzaghi  will  face off  against a rejuvenated PSG-led Luis Enrique in what Oliseh admitted was  never a strong proposition  at the outset  of the new format UEFA Champions League.

Unlike in the past,  the road to  this year’s UCL  Final match  was long and winding with the knockout phase play-offs whereby the  top eight sides in the league phase qualify automatically for the round of 16, the teams finishing in ninth to 24th  place kick-off the knockout stages. They compete in a two-legged knockout phase play-off to secure their path to the last 16.

En route to this final,  PSG  had a tough schedule  but  they took out  Mohammed Sallah-led Liverpool in the 16th Round (4-1 on penalties after a 1-1 aggregate scores), dismantled a stubborn  Aston Villa over two legs  in the quarter finals ( 5-4 aggregate win)  unto the semi-finals where they overpowered Arsenal  with a commanding performances  to reach the final on a 3-1 aggregate win.  The route was equally  not a piece of the  cake for Inter Milan  but they showered superiority with a 4-1 aggregate win over  Feyenoord in the 16th Round  and showed so much grit  in  the quarter finals  to deny Bayern Munich  the dream of  heading  to the UCL Final on their home soil  when Davide Frattesi  scored a  late winner at the Allianz Arena  to send the  The Black and Blues (I Nerazzurri) on a 4-3  aggregate. Yet it was in the semi-finals that Inter truly showed they are master of their ‘Catenaccio’  when they  contained and out-foxed the rampaging Lamine Yamal-Raphinha-inspired Barcelona  to book their spot in a dramatic 7-6 aggregate win.

“Honestly, very few would have predicted  rightly that   this year’s UEFA Champions League Final  would be played between  Inter Milan and Paris Saint Germain,”  Oliseh who  was recently appointed into  International Football Association Board (IFAB)-the global body responsible for creating and overseeing the rules that govern football worldwide- told NationSport .“But after I saw PSG play Liverpool in Anfield, then I felt this team can win the Champions League.”

Oliseh, a ‘Centrocampista’ in his heyday at Ajax,  Juventus and Dortmund explained why  PSG was dominant against  Liverpool, adding  the performance of the  history-chasing French giants in the second leg  at Anfield  largely unexpected.

He continued: “What stood out in that particular game, Liverpool-PSG? It was the way they (PSG) behaved with and without the ball. They had a very well-structured way of reacting without the ball. And they had a systematic way of acting on the ball that paralyzed Liverpool and made Liverpool  lost.

“Maybe, if  they had done that in Paris, I would have felt,  ‘okay’ , Liverpool  was  playing away. But they were doing it in Anfield, where Liverpool always try  to win their  games.

“It was then I knew that, wow, there is something here in this  PSG.”

If  PSG  was the pick of the crops  in the quarter finals, Inter Milan   themselves showed they were not the Cinderella of this UCL campaign with the way and manner they dumped  Barcelona in that nerve-wracking semi-final.

Yet Oliseh, a UEFA Intertoto Cup winner with Juventus  in 1999,  demurred, saying  it was Barcelona themselves that lost the plot .

“ I wouldn’t totally  agree that Inter Milan has an edge  over PSG going into Saturday’s final  because of the way  they beat Barcelona in the semi-final,” Oliseh, AFCON  and Olympic soccer gold winner with Nigeria, volunteered. “It depends on how you look at it but if you want to be direct about it, Inter qualified for the final because Barcelona had a poor defence; and some errors in substitution  of players.

“You can’t be leading 3-2 in a semi-final of Champions League and you bring in a striker?

“But if you bring in Lewandowski when the game was  almost over  and leading 3-2,you don’t need  to be  in the final,” Oliseh  further noted in his usual frankness pulled no punches .“Well, I never like to blame (the coach, Hansi Flick), but I just feel that in my own opinion, I think that (the substituting errors)  played a huge role (for Inter to progress to the UCL Final).”

Only 23 different clubs have won the UEFA  Champions League (formerly European Cup) since its inception in 1955-56  but Oliseh believes PSG looks the best bet to become the 24th  winner .

“ I hope my Arsenal  friends  won’t  be angry at me because up till now,  I have succeeded in every prediction  I have made leading to this final which I shared anyway,  with my close friends and family but this final (between PSG and Inter) is going to be the most difficult one to predict,” Oliseh, a Bundesliga winner  with Dortmund  in  the 2002/2002  season, further said. “But I can just give you what I  feel could happen based on the scenarios that could be produced over the cause  of the  90 minutes game.

“ This particular game is  difficult to predict because none of the two teams is  playing the Tiki-taka football 100 percent as such, I think  that  would be able to win  this final would be the team that is able to score first and manage the ball possession.

“ Being  able to manage the ball possession in the sense that,  to determine the tempo of the game and  I think that is where PSG  has an advantage.”

Oliseh would further  ran away from  joining  most purists tipping Inter to go all the way to win  their fourth Champions League following  their previous successes  in 1964, 1965 and  2010 where they beat most people’s favourites, Bayern Munich.

“I think people are underrating PSG,”  Oliseh, a seasoned tactician who was awarded with the Bronze Bull Plaque  during his  remarkable stint  with  Dutch side, Fortuna Sittard in 2017/2018. “ But  this is a team that has beaten four  English Premier League teams  en route to this  final  and it is interesting to know that  all these four teams (Man City, Liverpool, Aston Villa and Arsenal)  have all qualified  for next year’s Champions League  and that should tell you that they are not winning by chance.

“There  is a concise and concerted effort that is dominating and that is a plus to PSG.”

Oliseh would further argued  that  with PSG, the whole is greater than the sum of its parts, adding  the best thing to have happened  to The Red-and-Blues (Les Rouge-et-Bleu) in this campaign was the departure of their  former  talisman, Kylian Mbappe.

“ I agree with you that the best thing that happened to this club (PSG), was the departure of Mbappe to Real Madrid, he said. “The second best thing was employing  Luis Enrique as  the coach of PSG.

“ His team’s tactical variations are extraordinary. His team plays the passing game and they are not afraid to go away from the passing and jump lines when they are having difficulties.

“Personally, I have a bias towards him (Enrique)  because I know he’s gone through some difficult private issues, like when he lost his daughter .It’s been a very hard time for him as a human being and  to see him come back and take a team  without so many stars and been able to create  a team with young talented players to play like this, is unbelievable.”

Pressed to  pick from the hat  the likely winner of  tonight’s  encounter  and possibly  the star of the final, Oliseh  was further forthcoming.  “The only thing that will make PSG not  to win is if they don’t play at their best. But if they play at their best, they will win it.

“ And I give you a player to look out for in PSG , Ousmane Dembélé  but every player  on the in Inter side can be ‘crazy’.

“Inter  is the most unpredictable team in. Every player can win it for them  including their goalkeeper (Yann Sommer) ,he  can win it with his saves.

“ But let me quickly add that PSG has the best goalkeeper (Gianluigi Donnarumma) in this campaign

“My final thought? Inter can win it is based on their defensive structure. If Inter scores first,  it could be a huge problem for PSG.

“ But as I said earlier,  this is a final where it is not enough to score and sit back and I think Inter can be vulnerable  when they sit back like we saw them against Barcelona  when they first surrendered a 2-0 lead in the second leg  before their dramatic 4-3 win that  sent them to the final,” he noted.

Oliseh, Adepoju back indigenous coach for Super Eagles

Former Super Eagles players Sunday Oliseh and Mutiu Adepoju have backed indigenous coaches like Emmanuel Amuneke and Finidi George to head the Super Eagles.

The former Super Eagles coach said: “Everyone knows I’m an advocate of an indigenous coach to lead the Eagles, those two (Amuneke and Finidi) are good for the job.

“Anybody who really understands football will know that the Eagles don’t need a foreign coach, but the indigenous coach must have a great personality.

“I’m against foreign coach for our national team. It was a local coach that won the AFCON for Ivory Coast and the previous one for Senegal.”

In the same vein Adepoju said George deserved to be named substantive head coach of the Super Eagles.

The 53-year-old took charge of the Super Eagles recent friendlies against Ghana and Mali.

Adepoju is keen on to see his former teammate continue on the job.

“With only two games under his (Finidi’s) belt, his record of one win and one loss is not bad at all,” Mutiu told Flashscore.

“He has a lot of room for improvement. I firmly believe that these Super Eagles will prosper under his leadership if he gets the job.

“It would be a serious mistake to judge Finidi solely on our defeat against Mali. When José Peseiro was the coach of the Super Eagles, did he win every game? Finidi deserves our trust so that he can cultivate the confidence necessary to build on our current base.

  • Ajax UCL semi-final feat excites Oliseh

Former Super Eagles’ coach, Sunday Oliseh described Ajax Amsterdam UEFA Champions League feat as the best news in recent time for football fans across the world.

The former Ajax midfielder praised the team on their teamwork, hard work as opposed to buying world stars to win the European league.

Ex-Eagles star took to his Twitter to express his happiness the team’s 2018/19 UEFA Champions League semi-finals feat.

“Ajax in the Champions League Semis is probably the best news, for saving world club football as we know it in a long time: A Built team & playing its style as opposed to buying stars to win. Purposeful team hard work pays if u know how! Extremely pleased 4 my ex-club & d fans,” the former Eagles skipper wrote.

Ajax Amsterdam has enjoyed a smooth run of form in this season’s UEFA Champions League having played 16 matches, won nine, drew six and lost just one match.

The Netherland club has been played in the semi-final of the competition eight times won sailed through to finals six times, while they failed to progress two times. Ajax has won the title four times in 1971, 1972, 1973 and 1995.

  • Oliseh: I am still in charge of Fortuna Sittard

Former Super Eagles coach Sunday Oliseh still basking in the euphoria of his recent legal victory over Dutch division two club Fortuna Sittard, has declared that he is still in charge of the club at least till May 2018.

Oliseh who finally bared his mind on the implication of the judgment using his platform SundayOliseh.tv ednesday, said his explanation became necessary because many have asked him the implication of the KNVB court of Arbitration decision in his favour.

In a 20 -paragraph report, Oliseh whose contract with the club originally runs till June 2019, revealed that the court did not find him to have acted as a bad employee; on the contrary it found Fortuna management guilty of not being good employers.

The implication he further said is not only that the club is compelled to pay him all his financial dues and compensation for his still running contract but further  implies that “By virtue of it annulling the suspension of Fortuna

Sittard on myself and asking me to continue till May, I am still officially the Chief Coach of Fortuna Sittard till May 2018!,” he submitted

The former Eagles captain whose last assignment as a coach was taking the home based Eagles to the 2016 Championship of

African Nations (CHAN) in Rwanda, stopped short of saying that his slogan “The winning culture” is at work when he added

“Accusations from Mr. Gun and his “Gang” were thrown out the window not only because they did not make sense but dated way back as over a year ago! Hence the now historic question of the Judge to Mr. Isitan Gun that is still yet unanswered” If the accusations you levy against Mr. Oliseh Sunday Is true, why then did you give him a new 2 years contract in may 2017 with better conditions?”How could you suspend a coach for crimes he supposedly committed in 2016/2017 season in February 2018?  When he is heading towards being crowned champion, having taking the club from 19th position in January 2017 to 1st position in January 2018?”

Oliseh is however not celebrating his success selfishly as he has continued to pray for his team to emerge champions and crown the efforts he started with success.

“For Obvious reasons I am praying that my players and the caretaker coaches in charge now finish the phenomenal work we started and make Fortuna Champions!”even as he highlighted the importance of having the fear of God in everyday dealings’ “One major lesson learnt, no matter what, it pays to be honest, hardworking, professional, hungry and above all God fearing, “he enthused

Fortuna Sittard who have continued to record impressive results take on Den Bosch on Friday. The club lead the 20-team log with 69 points in 35 matches.

  • Oliseh praises self

    Oliseh praises self

Sunday Oliseh, former Nigerian international and former coach of the Super Eagles, somewhat reminds Hardball of the lizard, in one of Chinua Achebe’s novels.

“The lizard that falls from the high Iroko tree,” goes that saying, “praises itself, even if no one else did”.

And just like the lizard in that tale, Oliseh would sound it loud and clear that the revival that the national team is experiencing, en route to the World Cup in Russia, would not be complete without folks mentioning his part in it.

In a way, that is not untrue.  Yes, Oliseh first invited the duo of Kelechi Iheanacho and Alex Iwobi, to join the team, after inheriting the rump of the Stephen Keshi team.  The pair would make a definitive contribution to a breezy Mondial qualification, under Gernot Rohr.

Indeed, apart from the two youngsters kickstarting Nigeria’s qualification with a goal each, away to Zambia, Iwobi would make qualification sure with his sweet winner against the same Zambia, even with a match to spare, away to Algeria.

But Oliseh easily forgets — and clearly would also want everyone else to forget — how his needless rift with Vincent Enyeama, team captain and number 1 goalkeeper, and the juvenile manner he passed the captaincy to Ahmed Musa, ruptured the team and, even before the World Cup African zone elimination, rendered the team’s campaign in tatters.

Oliseh himself fled from the gargoyle he had created, resigning most sensationally, if not cowardly, thereby leaving the team in the lurch.

But then came Rohr, who perhaps nobody, maybe except his Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) employers gave a chance; and everything came together for the team.  The rest, they say, is history!

If Oliseh had stayed with that team, with its unity totally shred as it was, would we be talking of a World Cup ticket today?  Nobody can say for sure.  But, except a miracle happened, everything would probably have turned a debacle, given the then ongoing trend.  Still, thank God and thank the NFF, Nigerian ball fans were spared that agony.

Oliseh is a big name in Nigerian football.  He was part of that champagne party that set Africa agog in 1994,before setting USA 94 ablaze, at Nigeria’s debut at the World Cup.  If he had made a good show of his Eagles coaching assignment, he probably would have equalled Stephen Keshi’s record, as both player and coach, to have lifted the African Nations Cup.  But alas, that dream crashed before it took off.

Oliseh has earned his stripes as one of Nigeria’s golden generation of internationally acclaimed footballers, going after to enjoy a rich professional career in Europe.  Though his famed knowledge of the game is not in doubt, being a much sought after pundit and highly respected member of the FIFA technical family, his actual delivery as a coach has been limited.

His flaw has always been his temperament — a tad too stubborn and rigid — and his failure to always build a consensus (preferring instead to ram things down the throat of his players and employers), infuse unity in his team and push that team to greater heights.

That is what he should learn from Rohr who, with a team Oliseh almost doomed, snatched success and fame from the jaws of failure and odium.

Enough of all these self-serving claims!

  • Oliseh spotted with Awoniyi in Holland

Oliseh spotted with Awoniyi in Holland

Former coach of the Super Eagles of Nigeria Sunday Oliseh, who now handles Dutch side Fortuna Sittard met with Liverpool loanee Taiwo Awoniyi.

Awoniyi is on a season long loan from Liverpool to Dutch top division side NEC Nijmegen, where he has struggled to hit same height that made Liverpool splash big money to sign him two seasons ago.

It could be a chance meeting but it’s worthy to note that Oliseh could have passed some tips to the forward on how to succeed in the Netherlands, as the former Ajax man also played in same league during his playing days.

For now Oliseh’s main task is to steer his team further away from the relegation zone, which is part of the requirements given to him by the club before he is handed an extension.
