CHAN 2016:Oliseh to decide Eagles training camp

Super Eagles coach Sunday Oliseh will choose the training camp for the home-based Eagles in preparation for the 2016 African Nations Championship (CHAN) in Rwanda.

The Super Eagles were held Burkina Faso to a goalless draw in Ouagadougou on Sunday evening to reach the final of the championship courtesy of a 2-0 aggregate score.

Oliseh missed the second leg encounter in Burkina Faso due to illness, but watched the first leg in Port-Harcourt, which they won 2-0.

The Super Eagles assistant coaches, Salisu Yusuf and Jean Francois Losciuto, took charge of the team against Burkina Faso on Sunday.

The former national team captain was flown to Belgium for medical treatment, after he took ill in camp during preparations for last Sunday’s CHAN qualifier away to Burkina Faso. He has consequently been placed on bed rest on the advice of his personal physician after undergoing series of tests at the Mediapark Klinic, Cologne, in Germany.

A close source told SportingLife that Oliseh, who has been placed on a compulsory two-week rest, would be given the chance to pick a suitable place for the team’s camp.

“He is the head coach and he knows what he wants for the team. We wish him well. As soon as he comes back he will furnish NFF with his programs for the championship. We want better preparations for the team and we believe we can win it this time,” the source said.

Nigeria have now joined hosts Rwanda, Morocco, Tunisia, Mali, Guinea, Niger, Gabon, DR Congo, Uganda, Ethiopia, Zimbabwe, Zambia and Angola that have already qualified for the tournament.

The 2016 CHAN will take place from January 16 to February 7, 2016.

CHAN 2016 Eagles chief coach Sunday Oliseh has described the Bukinabes as a very combative set of players who wanted to catch the Nigerians on the counter in the first leg game played at the Adokie Amiesiamaka International Stadium in Port Harcourt yesterday. Nigeria beat Burkina Faso 2-0.

Disclosing this in a post-match interview on South African all sports television channel, DSTV on Saturday, Oliseh stated that the Nigerian side has not qualified for the competition despite the two goals advantage stressing that the Burkinabes were very good on the ball and wanted to play on the counter which backfired.

“They wanted to play a compact game. They were very comabative in the way they played. Good players who came here to play on the counter. I think our first goal forced them to open up their rear guard.  That decision gave us room to score the second goal and it could have been more,” Oliseh said.

Oliseh revealed further that he hopes to appeal to the president of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Melvin Amaju Pinnick to keep the players together in the camp for effective blending pointing out that: “For the second leg game, Nigerians will watch these players play with a more organised mindset in Ougadougou, Burkina Faso.

Asked by the DSTV interviewer how he was able to sit on the bench in spite of his illness as exclusively reported by Sportinglife last Tuesday, Oliseh said: “I took a lot of antiboitics and water. I had to rest to make it here.”

    Oliseh lacks maturity – Kpakor

Former Super Eagles midfielder, Moses Kpakor has described the the manner Coach Sunday Oliseh handled issues in the Super Eagles camp in Belguim which resulted in the departure of goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama as a smark of inmaturity on the part of the coach.

Speaking on the now resolved fued in the Super Eagles camp, Kpakor called on Oliseh to adopt some level of diplomacy in the handling of the national team if he hopes to have a smooth spell.

He noted that the coach’s duty goes beyond being with the players on the field of play for practice sessions and matches but includes a role as a manager as well as a father.

“Yes, he must instill discipline but he needs to be diplomatic in his actions as I think he did not even consult with the NFF before attempting to send Enyeama out of camp. Oliseh needs to win the confidence of his players to get the best out of them. If he does not adopt diplomacy and maturity, his temperament will ruin him as Eagles coach.

“I am in favour of the appointment of ex-internationals handling our national team as long as the person is qualified but I fault the manner in which Sunday Oliseh was appointed. Yes, we need younger minds on the job but there is need for maturity in the coaches. Oliseh’s action in the Super Eagles camp in Belgium which saw to the sacking of goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama clearly shows he lacks maturity.

“This may have been because he has gotten his salary for three months ahead. The action by the NFF is wrong because in Nigeria, the system is to get paid after the job is done on a monthly basis. Why was he paid in advance when Keshi was not paid for several months. It only amounts to a double standard on the part of the NFF. The action may have been to encourage him but it is a wrong step because it is not our practice in Nigeria.”

On the team’s captaincy, Kpakor, who is currently the Principal Football Coach of the Benue State University, BSU noted that Oliseh benefitted from being the oldest player to emerge captain of the national team and stripping Enyeama the way he did speaks volumes.

Kpakor stressed that Oliseh must do the right thing to get all the players to give their best.

Super Eagles chief coach Sunday Oliseh is indisposed and would not sit on the team’s bench in Saturday’s game against Burkina Faso, in one of the CHAN matches across Africa.

Sportinglife scooped that Oliseh sought and got approval from his employers, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to attend to his health after he hinted the federation’s president Melvin Amaju Pininck that he needed to see his doctors urgently in Belgium.

Consequently, Oliseh sent an e-mail to the federation’s Secretary General, Mohammed Sanusi who confirmed that he received the coach’s request to be left out of the Burkina Faso game on health grounds.

The NFF Secretary General, however refused to divulge the contents of Oliseh’s e-mail report which he said was confidential. He directed Sportinglife to reach out to the body’s president for clarification.

But the Secretary General informed Sportinglife that Oliseh’s assistants would prosecute the game on behalf of their boss, who must have told them the strategies to adopt to dislodge the Burkinabes at the Adokie Amiesiamaka International Stadium in Port Harcourt on Saturday.

Oliseh/Enyeama Face-off: Sanusi, Fashanu call for caution

NFF General Secretary Sanusi Mohammed has called on Nigerians to be patient with the football body as they try to find a way out of the impasse involving Super Eagles Head Coach Sunday Oliseh and former Captain Vincent Enyeama. Also former International John Fashanu has advised both parties to embrace the part of peace.

Speaking to SportingLife at different occasions in Abuja, the scribe of the Federation said: “We all heard what had happened between the two important figures in our senior national team, we are appealing to Nigerians not to jump to any conclusion on the incident as the football house is very much on top of the situation, and would surely find a way out of the situation. Our appeal to all Nigerians is that they should not jump to conclusions, and start apportioning blames. This would not be good for us as a country, and our football. The Federation would surely find a way out of it, in such a way that none of the parties would be offended. What we need in our football now is absolute peace. We don’t want anything that would cause any kind of distraction as we move towards playing our last matches to qualifying for the Africa Nations Cup holding in Angola. We want to remain focused and resolute. This can only be achieved in an atmosphere of peace and tranquility,” he said.

Toiling the stand, former International and Wimbledon of England striker John Fashanu advised both Sunday Oliseh and Vincent Enyeama to tow the path of peace for the interest of the country. Quoting his words, the former England international popularly called “Fash the Bash” said: “We don’t need all these now. Sunday Oliseh should know that the task of qualifying the country for the next edition of Africa Nations Cup rests on his shoulder. He does not need any type of distraction at this point. He needs absolute peace and tranquility in the discharge of his duties. If he is rebuilding the team, it should be a gradual process, because he needs the experience of the older players to move the young ones along. He should have been very diplomatic in handling the incident, so that it would not have degenerated to the situation it is now. I still maintain that he needs to be peaceful with everyone, to achieve whatever he is out to do. Nigerians would not accept anything that would make them not go for the second AFCON consecutively” he said.

Continuing, he said: “Vincent Enyeama also should know that after serving the country for over a decade, if he is retiring from international duties, he should quit honourably without any rancour. He is now a legend, well respected across the world, he should always apply caution in all his actions, So many young players are looking up to him as a model, so he should not disappoint them in his actions,” he said.

  • Oliseh, Enyeama saga: The real story

Oliseh, Enyeama saga: The real story

Vincent Enyeama quit the Super Eagles in Belgium; calling time on his international career, but not without some controversy. He alleged the head coach, Sunday Oliseh insulted his late mother, had security throw him out of the camp and stripped him. In an exclusive interview with www.footballlive.ng Sunday Oliseh debunked  the claims insisting the 33-year-old defamed his character.

The full excerpt of the interview:

I am deeply saddened, troubled and profoundly hurt by the assassination of my person as Vincent Enyeama has done over the past two days on social media about me insulting his mother, these allegations are unheard of.

When I was appointed the chief coach of the Super Eagles of Nigeria, I drove to Lille to see Vincent, took him to lunch and discussed how we wanted to move forward with him as my captain. I shared my philosophy with him and he made a statement I didn’t like, he said he was going to retire in a year or two and I told him I wouldn’t hear of it as he was the captain of the team because we were thinking of taking the team to the 2017 African Cup of Nation (AFCON) and 2018 World Cup; but we can’t build a team with you as captain if you are retiring in 2017.

Two weeks ago, before the camp started he told us about his mother’s burial but I couldn’t go and there was an arrangement with the President who assured me he’d be there on behalf of the NFF and team. But he started talking about retirement so at that moment I felt we needed someone else as captain; it had nothing to do with hurting anybody.

I don’t know Vincent personally, I’ve only been named coach and in fact we’ve seen only once. He’s served Nigeria very well and as Captain, I was also captain and I know how difficult that job is.

We started camp on Monday, to my greatest surprise, Mikel Obi and Ighalo camped in on Sunday night. We had invited 4 goalkeepers and he told us he had to bury his mother. So, Obviously he couldn’t report to camp early until Tuesday, just about the time we were rounding up; he drove into training ground.

Prior to his coming in, we had the Nigeria ambassador to Belgium come in to talk with the team because our delegation had not been given visas to come in, six players were stuck in Nigeria over the hitch; two of them were goalies. And somebody had to act in the absence of the Captain which Musa had been doing well prior to the Tanzania and Niger games. And I remember, when the Ambassador wrapped up I told Musa; as the captain, to introduce the team as a way to appreciate the support.

But the boys did not train well that afternoon, the ball playing was good but our objectiveness on the ball was not up to my satisfaction so later at dinner I called the team and told them I was not happy and demanded more from them. Only for Vincent to stand up insisting on saying somethings but I told him to see me about it later. He refused and as side talks persisted, I called him to order, he started raising his voice, I told him we couldn’t have two coaches in the team and that he had to retire to his room. His colleagues got up and escorted him out of the hall. Two of his colleagues came in later to see me; the Captain Ahmed Musa and Mikel Obi, pleaded on his behalf and we left it there. Only for issues to start popping up on social media alleging we insulted him and his late mother.

Most people are not aware of this but I’ll tell you now that when we went to play in Tanzania, I personally asked for the team to wear the black band in honour of his mother and for us to observe a minute’s silence , we asked and we went through the channel of Dayo Enebi, but they said we should have made the demand earlier, does this sound like a man who wants to humiliate his captain?

What happened after wards, was alarming. We had only two goalkeepers, 15 players and we were playing a friendly game so we had to call in players who did not need visas to come into Belgium as quick as possible to make up numbers. We now had to call in Alampasu because we had only two goalkeepers; we were already making a case with Alloy to get ready if anything happened. We called Efe Ambrose and Madu in, working like we were a fire brigade.

I did not even have time to reply social media chats because we had to work.

However, on the match day, Vincent did not come for lunch, I was confused because I thought we’d put all of the previous night’s issues behind us. I called him and asked why he wasn’t in for lunch and he said he was returning to his club. He said because I invited Alampasu he was leaving. Alloy Agu is my witness, God is my witness.

•Glasshouse chiefs make Eagles’ star talk to coach on telephone

Second Vice President of the Nigerian Football Federation, Malam Shehu Dikko has revealed that retired Super Eagles keeper, Vincent Enyeama has recounciled with Sunday Oliseh.

“Am delighted to confirm that Vincent Enyeama returned to Belgium earlier today and met with NFF leadership to discuss all issues.”

“He was remorseful and stated really what irked him was the removal as captain without first having a private conversation with the coach which is what he expected.”

“We drew his attention to the fact that when he was appointed captain neither the coach or NFF had any private conversation with him thus this shouldn’t be an issue as a professional.”

“Serious advise were offered to guide him going forward and the decision of the coach including how the coach intervene on behalf of Enyeama to get the NFF to drop the disciplinary hearing after the kaduna issues were all explained to him.”

“Enyeama too offered his own side. Well he has realized his mistakes and he has spoken to coach Oliseh (via phone as the team is in a different hotel) and they both laughed over the issues.”

“Enyeama indeed expressed his firm commitment for the good of Nigeria and has confirmed that his interest is to support/motivate the young ones in the team and thus he has been speaking to Ahmed Musa to advise/guide him in his new role as captain to ensure the team do well”

“I really love what the coach told us that when he too was captain he did some things that even though he believes he was right but with a benefit of hindsight he now still regrets those things anf wish he hadn’t done them and has indeed paid a heavy price for it so as a senior brother and farther figure to the players he won’t allow any player to make the same mistakes otherwise he would have been a total failure.”

“Well, all seems settled now as its all laughter and we had a good lunch and Enyeama has returned to France to think over his future along with his Wife and Pastor to decide if he wants to continue or not.”

“We also did spoke to his Wife via Skype and thanked her for being by her husband and invited her and Enyeama back to Belgium tomorrow to watch the Cameroon game at NFF cost, all as part of the process to smoothen issues.”

“Accordingly, the door to the national team is still open to Enyeama but strictly under the coach terms.”

“Indeed, the coach holds no grudges and his only interest is to build a good team for Nigeria and ensure credible performances and success at all times.”

  • Babayaro: Oliseh is confused

    Babayaro: Oliseh is confused

Former Nigeria International goalkeeper Emmanuel Babayaro has said Super Eagles head coach Sunday Oliseh is at a loss over the best way to handle the Super Eagles.

Speaking after the team’s 2-0 loss to Congo DR in a friendly game played in Belgium, Babayaro blamed the coach’s starting lineup and substitutions.

“Oliseh is confused, his starting lineup is proof that right now he doesn’t know what he’s doing” Babayaro told News24.

“A coach, who has a central defender like Efe Ambrose and chooses to play Leon Balogun a right back as a central defender is confused.

“Shehu Abdullahi didn’t do badly as a right back but still Ambrose is in the team and from that same spot he was untouchable in the team for four years, why is he on the bench?”

He called on the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to ensure Oliseh stays in Nigeria and watch the local lads himself, as those presently being called up by the coaches in charge are not the best legs in the local league.

The newly appointed Super Eagles coach lost his first game against Congo DR and has so far won just one in the three games he has managed the Eagles, being the 2-0 win over Niger Republic in a friendly.

Nigeria under Oliseh will play Cameroun next on Sunday in Brussels, in another friendly game in preparation for AFCON 2017 and World cup 2018 qualifiers.

  • Oliseh knows what he wants, says Amiesimaka

Oliseh knows what he wants, says Amiesimaka

Nigeria international Adokiye Amiesimaka feels that Super Eagles’ handler Sunday Oliseh  should be allowed to take decisions that suit what he wants.

According to the lawyer, who was a member of the 1980 Africa Cup of Nations winning team, Nigerians should not feel distraught with the decisions of the Eagles’ technical crew as they know what they want to achieve success.

“We have a new man at the helm of affairs of the Super Eagles, and that is Oliseh. He has goodwill – a fact we must come to terms with. He has his own crew and we must not expect him to carry on with the way things have been before,” Amiesimaka told Goal.

“He knows who he wants and what they should do, so we must not say because [Vincent] Enyeama was captain under some other coaches then he must continue to be captain under Oliseh, no it does not work like that.”

On the appointment of Ahmed Musa as captain of the team, Adokiye believes Oliseh’s decision was not out of place since Enyeama had been giving signs of his imminent retirement.

“Nigerians should not also forget that even before now, Enyeama has made it clear that he was on the verge of quitting the national team, so one shouldn’t expect that the Eagles’ handler wouldn’t look elsewhere for a captain.

“No coach would like to carry on with a leader whose mind was no longer fully on the game. There is nothing wrong with Oliseh’s decision to look elsewhere, only that there are certain ways of doing and not doing things. I wouldn’t like to comment on this further because I do not have the full facts.”

He said Enyeama who earned 101 caps for the Super Eagles after 13 years of service deserves a befitting testimonial for his laudable service.

“Vincent Enyeama has served Nigeria meritoriously for so many years, not just as a player but as the captain of the senior national team,” he added.

“And as we all know, you come, you serve, you go because no position is permanent and no function is permanent, so it is not strange that Enyeama has thrown in the towel or decided to leave an active service.

“Having served Nigeria so well, what the country now owes him like it is done in every part of the world is a befitting farewell match. He should not be allowed to leave unceremoniously,” he concluded.

After losing 2-0 to DR Congo on Thursday, the Super Eagles would seek redemption when they face Cameroon tomorrow in Brussels.

  • NFF backs Enyeama against Oliseh

    NFF backs Enyeama against Oliseh

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has backed goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama to remain in the Super Eagles camp after the row with Coach Sunday Oliseh.

Oliseh, who was physically angry over the late arrival of goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama to the team’s camp in Belgium, asked the player to shut up and be thrown out of camp by security operatives.

Nigeria will play two international friendlies against Congo DR today and Cameroon on Sunday in Belgium.

A bereaved Enyeama was in Nigeria last weekend to bury his late mother, who’s death saw the Eagles captain miss Nigeria’s last two games against Tanzania and Niger. That development did not go down well with Oliseh who did not show remorse over the Lille shot-stopper’s sad condition at the time.

Oliseh told the media in September that the goalkeeper opted out of the Super Eagles ahead of their trip to Tanzania without an excuse.

Enyeama arrived Belgium late on Monday to meet an angry Oliseh who ordered him out of the team’s Hotel Verviers camp, and subsequently named Ahmed Musa as captain for the two friendly games.

But the NFF would douse the tension as they waded into the matter.

“It’s true that there was a little misunderstanding in the camp of @NGSuperEagles, but the matter has been resolved. Enyeama remains in camp,” the NFF said on Twitter.

With the latest development, Nigerians wait to see who stands in between the sticks for the Super Eagles two friendlies, as well as who captains the side.

Enyeama is Nigeria’s longest serving player with 101 appearances for the Super Eagles.
