Basiru, Omisore, Ogunbiyi lament political neglect of Iwo as ex-Concord Editor, Tella, launches book

The political marginalisation of Iwo town, Osun State came to the front burner during the launch of a book by a veteran journalist, Alhaji Liad Tella.

Eminent Osun indigenes, including National Secretary of All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Ajibola Basiru; ex-Osun Deputy governor, Senator Iyiola Omisore;, Chairman of Mutual Benefits Assurance, Dr. Akin Ogunbiyi, noted this during the launch.

The dignitaries who gathered at Riverside Hotel, Iwo, Osun State on Saturday, noted that Iwo town is an ancient town in Yorubaland which should not be neglected with its cultural and wide landscape.

The author of the book, Alh Liad Tella, said “You will learn a lot of lessons from the book if you read it. The advocacy that this book raised will cause light of relevance to shine on Iwo, an ancient town which had long been marginalised.

“The book will further push Iwo town forward from the politically marginalised side to limelight. This gathering today shows that we don’t do politics of bitterness as politicians from all parties are here.”

In the remark, Basiru highlighted the factors responsible for politically marginalisation of communities.

He said “there are four factors that work against development and benefit of any communities or groups. We must prioritise western education and not rely on Arabic class alone. We must work on the economy of our communities to be viable, our politicians must work jointly for the progress of Iwo and external politicians must see to the development of all towns evenly.”

Also, the Chairman of the occasion, the ex-National Secretary of APC, Senator Iyiola Omisore, said “the title of the book has suggested its contents, I urge every politician in Osun State to get a copy of this book.”

Earlier, ex-guber candidate in Osun State, Dr Akin Ogunbiyi, co-launcher, said “I can boldly say that Iwo has been marginalised for so long as if it is not part of Osun State in the last 30 years, there is no development that has come to Iwo compared with other communities.

“When you read this book you will weep for us in Iwo. I challenged Alh Liadi Tella to write this book so that people will know what we are facing. In the last 40 years, we have never been governor, deputy governor, Minister, Speaker, Ambassador…Nothing! I want to tell the people of Iwo that power is not shared in a la carte, we must fight for it to earn it.”

The dignitaries present were; Commissioner for Water Resources, Hon. Sunday Oroniyi, who represented the  of Osun State governor, Ademola Adeleke; Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrosheed Akanbi; ex-SSG, Fatai Akinbade;  Prince Dotun Babayemi;  ex-Commissioners under administration of Adegboyega Oyetola, Yemi Lawal; Folorunso Bamisayemi.

2027: Omisore downplays coalition, says all members want to be president

Internal power tussles among key figures of the opposition will be the undoing of the coalition against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu-led administration in 2027, a former National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Iyiola Omisore, has said.

Downplaying the anxiety of the opposition, Omisore noted that many of those who defected into the adopted coalition party Action Democratic Congress (ADC) are eyeing the presidential ticket, thus making the coalition’s unity superficial.

Omisore, who spoke yesterday in a television chat, said there was nothing to fear about those realignment of the strange bedfellows against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The figures in the ADC former Vice President Atiku Abubakar; one-time Senate President David Mark; former governors Peter Obi (Anambra); Nasir El-Rufai (Kaduna) and Rotimi Amaechi (Rivers).

Dismissing the stature of the opposition figures, Omisore said: “No, I’m not worried at all. Because there are hawks among them, all of them have the same goal.

“You can see that after that meeting, Obi said he wants to be president, Atiku said the same, Rotimi said the same thing and Aminu Tambuwal too.

“So, how are we sure that they are going to continue on this full list? Let us watch and see. Politics is not mathematics; it’s reality.”

Stated that the coalition cannot pose a threat to APC’s dominance, he argued that the past electoral performances of the opposition figures in their respective states did not prevent the APC from securing victory at the national level.

He said: “The bulk of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) – they are all hosts from PDP (85 per cent PDP now). Up to this time, Rotimi Amaechi lost Rivers State; we lost Kaduna State – that’s El-Rufai; we didn’t win Anambra and Edo State where there was a PDP governor, and we still won the election. So, these things don’t add up,” the former APC scribe said.

Shettima, Omisore task mechanical engineers on budgeting, national development

Vice President Kashim Shettima has urged engineers to play a more prominent role in shaping national planning and budgeting.

He said the precision, structure, and alignment fundamental to engineering are equally indispensable in governance.

Shettima spoke at this year’s Mechanical Engineering distinguished lecture, the 15th edition, yesterday in Abuja.

The Vice President stressed that national budgets must be designed with the same disciplined logic that governs engineering practice.

“Our national challenges are not due to lack of knowledge but from the failure to apply these principles with discipline and clarity.

“The true measure of any thriving civilisation lies in its respect for numbers, for data, for geometry, and for the guiding principles of mathematics,” he said.

Shettima said budgeting should be seen as an engineering exercise where every figure must make sense and every decision must serve a strategic purpose.

The event attracted a high-profile audience, including the Ministers of State for Health and Social Welfare, Adekunle Salako; Marine and Blue Economy, Gboyega Oyetola; former Governors Olusegun Mimiko (Ondo) and Idris Wada (Kogi), as well as industry leaders, traditional rulers, and leaders of engineering bodies.

Shettima praised the Nigerian Institution of Mechanical Engineers (NIME) for choosing a timely theme: The Imperative of Engineering Strategies for the Planning of National Budget, for the event.

“In the public policy space, we see firsthand how the strategies used by engineers to produce precise outcomes can be applied to governance…

“A nation that hopes to rise must learn to plan like an engineer. That is how we build the Nigeria of our dreams,” he added.

Delivering the 15th distinguished lecture, a former Osun State deputy governor, Senator Iyiola Omisore, urged engineers to participate actively in transforming this year’s budget from vision to tangible results.

“The budget is like a vehicle with a powerful engine but no wheels. We simply won’t go anywhere unless we develop innovative implementation strategies rooted in engineering solutions,” Omisore warned.

The former deputy governor noted that despite Nigeria’s position as Africa’s largest economy, over half the population lives on less than N1,500 a day while the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) has lagged behind its true potential.

“We need to examine what role mechanical engineers can play in enhancing industrial productivity and supporting government efforts to expand economic opportunities,” he said.

Omisore identified youth unemployment, underemployment, and poor infrastructure as pressing challenges facing the country.

He urged engineers to support micro, small, and medium enterprises and adopt solutions in renewable energy, robotics, automation, and local manufacturing.

Vice President Kashim Shettima has called on Nigerian engineers to play a more prominent role in shaping national planning and budgeting, insisting that the precision, structure, and alignment fundamental to engineering are equally indispensable in governance.

Speaking at the 2025 Mechanical Engineering Distinguished Lecture in Abuja on Wednesday, Shettima emphasised that national budgets must be designed with the same disciplined logic that governs engineering practice.

“Our national challenges are not due to a lack of knowledge, but from the failure to apply these principles with discipline and clarity.

“The true measure of any thriving civilisation lies in its respect for numbers, for data, for geometry, and for the guiding principles of mathematics.”

He added that budgeting should be seen as an engineering exercise where every figure must make sense and every decision must serve a strategic purpose.

Shettima praised the Nigerian Institution of Mechanical Engineers for choosing a timely theme: ‘The Imperative of Engineering Strategies for the Planning of National Budget’.

“In the public policy space, we see firsthand how the strategies used by engineers to produce precise outcomes can be applied to governance.

“Where we invest thoughtlessly, the consequences are felt across generations. But where we apply intelligence and strategy, the benefits multiply.”

He urged greater collaboration between engineers and policymakers to ensure that government investments align with measurable, long-term national objectives.

“A nation that hopes to rise must learn to plan like an engineer. That is how we build the Nigeria of our dreams,” he added.

Delivering the 15th Distinguished Lecture, former Deputy Governor of Osun State, Sen. Iyiola Omisore, urged engineers to become active participants in transforming the 2025 budget from vision to tangible results.

“The budget is like a vehicle with a powerful engine but no wheels. We simply won’t go anywhere unless we develop innovative implementation strategies rooted in engineering solutions,” Omisore warned.

He stressed that despite Nigeria’s position as Africa’s largest economy, over half the population lives on less than N1,500 a day, and the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) has lagged behind its true potential.

“We need to examine what role mechanical engineers can play in enhancing industrial productivity and supporting government efforts to expand economic opportunities,” he said.

Omisore identified youth unemployment, underemployment, and poor infrastructure as pressing challenges, calling on engineers to support micro, small, and medium enterprises and adopt solutions in renewable energy, robotics, automation, and local manufacturing.

He underscored the need for energy diversification, urging engineers to drive solar and gas-based power systems, improve transportation infrastructure, and produce essential spare parts locally.

He also called for local innovation in healthcare technology and a renewed focus on human capital development.

Referring to the 2025 budget’s reliance on oil, non-oil taxes, and external loans, he said, “The mechanical engineer must develop strategies to transform these resources into productive assets.

“Nigeria has the potential for sustainable development, but we must rise to meet our responsibilities.”

He also urged the government to return the Industrial Training Fund (ITF) to its original mandate of fund distribution rather than project execution, stating that its current direction was “detrimental to the growth of the engineering sector.”

Former Ondo State Governor, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, in a goodwill message, backed the call for greater local participation in national development.

Arguing that the time had come to reverse the trend of awarding over 90 percent of the nation’s infrastructure projects to foreign firms, Mimiko described engineering as “The very soul of education and the heartbeat of national development.”

“I see very little evidence of Nigerian engineering involvement in these critical projects, even though we’ve been producing engineers in this country for over five decades.

“This is why the launch of the ‘Nigeria First’ project by the Federal government is so significant. For the first time, it places road construction squarely in the hands of Nigerians. And that, to me, is a powerful statement.”

Mimiko praised the new policy initiative as a remarkable development, describing it as a “Profound ideological shift, carefully conceived, thoughtfully articulated, and, hopefully, sincerely committed to.”

Other speakers at the event also called on mechanical engineers to take a more active role in the government’s budgeting process, emphasizing the need to bring their technical expertise and problem-solving experience to bear in shaping national development priorities.

The highlight of the event was the conferment of honours on Vice President Shettima, Senator Omisore, and former Osun State Governor and APC founding chairman, Chief Bisi Akande, in recognition of their contributions to national development.

LG poll: Ikeja Youths sponsor Omisore, chairmanship aspirant with N5.5m nomination form

The Ikeja Progressive Youths on Friday purchased the All Progressives Congress (APC) chairmanship nomination form for Abisola Omisore, solidifying his position as a leading contender for the chairmanship of Ikeja local government in Lagos State.

Hundreds of enthusiastic youths on Friday, April 25, gathered to show support during the formal presentation and endorsement, which also saw another aspirant, Mr. Tayo Aderinola, step down in support of Omisore.

Speaking at the event, the group’s leader, Gbenga Bolaji, said the N5.5 million form was funded by the progressive youths of Ikeja in recognition of Omisore’s exemplary leadership, humanitarian contributions, and steadfast dedication to community development.

“Today marks a significant moment in our collective journey towards a more progressive, inclusive, and prosperous Ikeja,” Bolaji said. “Leadership is not just about power, but about service, vision, and genuine commitment to the people.”

He described Omisore as a leader who has consistently prioritised youth empowerment through initiatives such as skills acquisition programmes, educational support, and palliative distributions.

“We did not arrive at this decision lightly,” Bolaji added. “After carefully evaluating his plans, past contributions, and vision for Ikeja, we are confident that Omisore is the leader we need at this crucial time.”

According to the group, Omisore’s leadership style reflects the belief that youth are not just future leaders, but vital stakeholders in today’s governance.

The youth leader also said that Omisore’s popularity in Ikeja was not by chance but by choice, the choice to serve selflessly.

He added that Omisore has impacted countless lives through various initiatives, including healthcare interventions, community development projects, and welfare programmes.

“His blueprint for Ikeja is one of sustainable development, infrastructure improvement, and economic growth. We have examined his plans, and they align with our aspirations for a better, more prosperous local government,” he said.

Aderinola, one of the aspirants who stepped down, said that after consultations and careful deliberation with his legal counsel and supporters, he chose to withdraw from the chairmanship race in support of Omisore.

“I am delighted to declare my support for a chairmanship aspirant who possesses the requisite qualifications and shares my vision for sustainable development and the well-being of the people of Ikeja.

“He is also actualising the renewed hope mantra of our National Leader and President, Federal Republic of Nigeria, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who coincidentally hails from Ikeja’s political base.

“In light of the current situation, I am pleased to announce my endorsement and support for Mr Abisola Omisore, the most exceptional chairmanship aspirant to represent our great party, APC, in Ikeja for the forthcoming Local Government Elections,” he said.

In his remarks, Omisore expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Ikeja Progressive Youths for their remarkable gesture of purchasing the nomination form on his behalf.

“This is not just a form; it is a symbol of your belief in my vision, your trust in my capacity, and your commitment to the progress of Ikeja. I do not take this for granted.

“My dear progressive youths of Ikeja, respected leaders here at present, I stand before you with immense gratitude and a heart full of humility.

“I want to express my deepest appreciation to the Youth for this incredible gesture of purchasing the nomination form on my behalf.

“Your support goes beyond politics, it is a testament to the power of collective ambition and the shared desire for a better Ikeja. You have shown that when the youth unite with purpose, great things happen.

“Today, you have not just endorsed a candidate; you have ignited a movement for transformative leadership,” he said.

Omisore stated that if entrusted with the mandate, his administration would make youth empowerment and job creation top priorities, emphasizing that “the future belongs to those who prepare for it today.”

He added that inclusive governance would also be central to his agenda, ensuring that every community, market, and street has a voice in decision-making.

“Infrastructure and sustainable development will not be left out because Ikeja deserves roads, healthcare, and facilities that match its status as the heartbeat of Lagos. Likewise security and welfare, ensuring that every resident feels safe and valued,” he said.

The Deputy Director, Media and Publicity, Sanwo-Olu Vanguard, Ojokoro LCDA, Kola Omisore, has pledged to support the emergence of the gubernatorial candidate of the All Progressives Congress in Lagos, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, as the next governor of the state because of his track record of competence, creativity and his all-inclusive style of leadership.

Omisore said that since 1999, Lagos State, under the progressives, has continued to experience exponential growth and development because of the competence and the all-inclusive style of governance of successive administration.

He noted that Lagos State deserves a visionary, innovative and people-oriented leader who recognises the state’s diversity and is ready to explore it for development while continuing on the current development strides in the state.

He said: “Our assessment about Sanwo-Olu is that his experience in public service, hard work, generosity, and inclusive nature are reasons he stands out among the various contestants vying to be next governor of Lagos State.

”We are not oblivious of his track records as the Special Adviser on Corporate Matters to the then deputy governor of Lagos State, Femi Pedro, acting Commissioner of Economic, Planning and Budget, former Commissioner of Commerce and Industry, former Commissioner of Establishment, Training and Pension,” he said.

He added that we have gone to meet our people to tell them and reassure them that the administration of Sanwo-Olu will improve the living condition of our people in Ojokoro.

  • Southwest APC: Shettima, Ambode meet Omisore at Ibadan parley

Members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Peace and Reconciliation Committee for the Southwest met yesterday in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, with a Social Democratic Party (SDP) group from Osun State, led by its 2018 governorship candidate, Senator Iyiola Omisore.

The chairman of the committee and Borno State Governor Kashim Shettima was accompanied by his Kaduna and Lagos State counterparts, Mallam Nasiru El-Rufai (Vice Chairman) and Akinwunmi Ambode, as well as other members of the committee.

The meeting was part of the committee’s engagements with strategic allies of the party and aggrieved APC members in the six states of the Southwest.

The committee was in Ibadan for interactive hearing with APC members from Osun and Oyo states.

Other members are: Ambode, former Ekiti Deputy Governor Prof Modupe Adelabu, the Director General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Dr Dakuku Peterside and Sa’ida Sa’ad Bugaje.

Last week, the committee held a consultative meeting with Vice President Yemi Osinbajo in his capacity as the most senior public office holder in the Southwest.

The committee was in Ado-Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital, where it held an interactive hearing with aggrieved members of the APC from Ondo and Ekiti states.

In Ibadan, the committee held a strategic engagement meeting with Omisore and three others who accompanied him on issues relating to the politics of Osun State.

The meeting, which held behind closed-doors, was on the invitation of the committee, which is expected to meet with House of Representatives Deputy Speaker Yusuph Lasun, also from Osun, as well as the Minister of Communication, Adebayo Shittu, from Oyo.

The committee received six aggrieved members, comprising three from Oyo and three from Osun, without a written petition submitted to it.

Shettima and his members were excited about the development.

“We have received the least number of aggrieved members here in Ibadan, from Oyo and Osun states. This bears testimony to the fact that Oyo and Osun governors have made significant reconciliation efforts. We were told of how Oyo State Governor, in particular, invited, hosted and met with aggrieved members and came up with measures of managing grievances.

“We have confirmed that the governor is already fulfilling his promises of carrying aggrieved members along, and this is very encouraging,” Shettima said.

Ambode urged aggrieved members to borrow from him by helping to build peace in the interest of the APC ahead of next year’s general elections.

He said: “We should all recognise that when there is life, there is always a hope for a better future. You can’t win all the time in politics. So, we should put our fate in God that the future will be bright. We should work together for our party, no matter the extent of our bitterness.”
