  • Omisore has found his voice again

I would have found Senator Iyiola Omisore’s attack on the administration of Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, Osun State governor, distasteful, if not that it is hilarious. The wily politician has a way of titillating his fantasy by making wild and outrageous claims on Osun’s debt profile. I have read the report several times and cannot find anything of substance in it. The report represents no value, other than mischief.

The issue of Osun’s debt profile is very well in the public domain. It is one of the issues on which the administration has been very transparent. The Office of the Governor, Ministry of Finance and the State Accountant General has released detailed information to the public on the matter. The state’s indebtedness stands as at today at N170.6 billion made up of N141.1 billion domestic and N29.5 billion multilateral debts, and is going down every month since the state never defaults on repayment.

The good news here is that by 2019, the N30 billion vanilla bond obtained in 2012 would have been fully repaid. Also, the N11.4 billion Sukuk bond would be fully repaid in 2020. This will free up a lot of the resources of the state and the projects procured with the loans would have been a huge gain.

Nevertheless, the debt, as at the time they came were, not meant to be hard on the state’s finances. Then, oil was selling above $100 and Osun was netting above N4 billion from the federation account every month. From this amount, the state was able to set something aside for the raining day in form of Omoluabi Conservation Fund.

Problem came when oil price fell to as low as $22. This affected not only Osun but all the states of the federation, including the federal government. Indeed, this hit the federal government so bad that the then Minister of Finance, Dr Ngozi Okonjo Iweala, cried that the administration had to borrow N476 billion from commercial banks to be able to pay salaries in the last four months of his administration. This explains the low allocation to Osun.

Debt has a long history in Osun. Some of the debts were inherited from the Western Region as part of what Chief Obafemi Awolowo used to develop the region. Others were inherited from the old Oyo State. Also, the immediate past Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) administration took a short term debilitating loan of N18.3 billion to construct stadia, requiring the state to take N1 billion bank overdraft to service and supplement salary payment every month. One of the first tasks of the Aregbesola administration was to restructure this loan into a long term easy loan.

But the loans taken were most judiciously used for infrastructure development in the state. The N11.4 billion sukuk bond was used for the construction of 11 state-of-the-art mega high schools. Each school is a three-in-one with capacity for 3,000 pupils. Every year, the schools will graduate a combined 11,000 top of the grade students.

The spending on education has brought the desired fruits, contrary to the claim of Senator Omisore. Before Governor Aregbesola came to office in 2010, the best performance under the PDP administration in the state was 15 per cent pass in WAEC Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination. As at 2018, it has however risen under the Aregbesola administration to 54 per cent. That is still not satisfactory by our standard but it is a whopping 360 per cent increase.

Opon Imo, e-learning tablet, is an innovation of the Aregbesola administration that exists in no other place. It is a school on its own that contains all the recommended textbooks in electronic format, all past questions of WAEC and JAMB and audio tutorials. It has been used by five sets of final year students of the state and has contributed significantly to the success of Osun’s candidates in external examinations.

The state’s home-grown school feeding programme is a huge success. Under it, more than 428 million hot mid-day meals have been served to our children in public elementary schools since 2012 to date. More than 1.5 million pupils have benefited from the scheme since 2012 while school enrolment increased from 155,318 pupils at inception to 252,739, representing a 62 per cent increase.

From the N30 billion vanilla bond, the N18.3 billion debilitating loan obtained by the PDP administration was restructured. The rest and funds from other sources were used to construct and rehabilitate 230 roads, stretching over 368 kilometres.

The MKO Abiola International Airport in Ido Osun was started by the PDP administration. The site of the airport was the old aerodrome used by the West African Frontier Force to airlift soldiers during World War II. It was the place a plane first landed and picked passengers in Nigeria in 1934 and hence of historical significance. The state government has done an extensive work on it, including evacuating and refilling 3.5 kilometre-long and 12.3 metre-deep laterite soil for the preparation of about the longest runway in Nigeria.

The total amount spent by the state government on this project is still less than N2 billion, contrary to the bogus and fictitious figure of N5 billion bandied in the non-report.

However, in 2017, the state government got a concessionaire who promised to complete the project at no cost to the government and run it for 30 years. Regrettably, the concessionaire could not access the funds he banked upon from the Turkish EXIM Bank and therefore could not deliver on the project, thus the termination of the concession.

Senator Omisore has found his voice again, now that election is around the corner, being the candidate of an unknown party, having been crowded out of PDP. He now wants to falsely project himself as the main man in the midst of crippled opposition candidates. But he is a wounded and spent political soldier.

Unlike four years ago when he was the opposition front runner, Omisore is miles away from the candidate of the APC, Gboyega Oyetola, and he knows it. He really has no unique selling point, being an old stock in the market. He has therefore rehashed his concocted debt figure of Osun, as his favourite attack line.

But this is a bogey because the loans taken are performing and the people can see the evidence in all the nooks and crannies of the state. In every local government where 10 kilometres of roads have been constructed, every commuter feels the impact of the loans; every family of the 262,000 pupils that partakes of the O’meals every school day will not easily forget how impactful the loan has been. Each of the 40,000 OYES cadets that went through the programme and had been given soft landing will salute the financial engineering capability of the Aregbesola administration.

Osun has been able to put up the most aggressive social protection programme. For instance, Osun put 1,602 most vulnerable senior citizens on welfare, giving them a monthly stipend and taking care of their health needs. Under this same programme, 175 lunatics have been rescued from the streets, treated, rehabilitated and happily reunited with their family in sound health.

Osun’s investment in security is second to none. The state government procured 120 patrol vehicles for the law enforcement agencies and bought 25 armoured personnel carriers. No state, not even Lagos, can boast of this. We must not forget the 24/7 emergency ambulance service with over 30 well-fitted ambulances all over the state.

The Aregbesola administration also sponsored 85 medical students of UNIOSUN to Ukraine to complete their medical studies. They have since returned home after passing out with flying colours. Also, 40 young farmers were sponsored to Saxon Anhalt in Germany for training in modern agriculture while 31 outstanding engineering graduates were sent to Germany to master modern automobile works and retrofitting. A world class mechatronics institute located at the College Of Technology, Esa-Oke, is the outcome of this investment, where these whiz kids impact their knowledge and expertise on local technicians, artisans and tradesmen.

With the loans and other resources of the state, it is beyond dispute that Aregbesola has transformed the fortunes of Osun. It will take more than a concocted and contrived debt crisis to beat the candidate of the APC on September 22 governorship election in the state.

  • ‘Omisore obtained SDP’s governorship form through back door’

There is more trouble for former Chairman of the Senate Committee on Appropriation, Otunba Iyiola Omisore.

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Osun State, on which platform he plans to run for the September 22 governorship election, has declared him a persona non grata.

In a dramatic manner yesterday, the party said the process through which Omisore obtained his form of intent to contest the governorship election on its platform was faulty.

SDP said the aspirant was not recognised.

Addressing reporters at the party’s secretariat in Osogbo, the state capital, the party’s State Chairman Ademola Ishola said Omisore did not follow due process but collected his form for the party’s primary through the back door.

The chairman, who insisted that Omisore is not a member of the party, said SDP had not received him officially in the state.

According to him, the process of becoming a member of the SDP is spelt out in the party’s constitution.

Ishola said Omisore was required to go through familiarisation and registration from the ward to the local government level.

The chairman said the aspirant had not fulfilled any of the processes for registration as a member in the state.

By implication, he said, Omisore had jumped the gun, for relating with officials at the headquarters instead of the state.

The chairman noted that such a move was strange to the party’s guidelines and regulation.

Ishola said: “There are fundamental criteria of becoming a member in our party, including registration at the ward level and being a financial member, among others. None of that has been fulfilled by Otunba Omisore. May be he is trying to influence the process to his advantage.

“As far as we are concerned, he is just a party admirer, not a member. Our National Leader, Chief Olu Falaye, has made it clear to all of us that the party should not be allowed to be hijacked by anybody; it is on this we stand.

“The names of aspirants on the platform of our party are: Otunba Yemisi Oladeji, Mr. AbdulWakeel Adeola and Munirudeen Atanda. Let me state clearly here that as far as congress is concerned in Osun State SDP, the existing state executives under my leadership was inaugurated on February 16, 2016 and our tenure expires on February 15, 2020, in line with the provision of the constitution of our party.”

Also, Omisore has said the SDP in Osun State has no power to say he was not recognised.

In a statement by his spokesperson Taiwo Akeju, the aspirant said he remained one of the leaders of the party in the state and a leading aspirant for the governorship seat on its platform.

He said: “Those who addressed the media today (Monday) have no power to do so. They have no locus standi to say I am not a member of the SDP. They are not representing the SDP in Osun State. I (Senator Omisore) am one of the leaders of the party in the state and a governorship aspirant contesting for governorship position on the platform SDP.

The statement added: “He (Omisore) is operating very well in his ward, his local government and at the state level. Since he joined the SDP officially from PDP, he has changed the face of politics in Osun State positively.”

  • Omisore faults late passage, signing of 2018 budget

    • Picks SDP governorship nomination form in Abuja

Former Deputy Governor of Osun State, Senator Iyiola Omisore has criticised all arms of government for the late passage and signing of the 2018 budget.

Omisore, who is an erstwhile chairman, Senate Appropriation Committee, is also one of the governorship aspirants, contending for the ticket of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) ahead of the September 22 gubernatorial poll in Osun State.

He spoke in Abuja during the official purchase of the SDP governorship nomination form.

He attributed the development to lack of commitment among agencies of government adding that: “Our budget process is a problem in this country. When you sign a budget in June and another one is coming in September and this is an election year the outcome will not be good. The difference between democracy and the military regime is the National Assembly. And the National Assembly major work is the appropriation of funds.

“The problem of budget today is the issue of commitment among agencies of government. We must not see any arm of government as enemies. That is the problem we have in this country. When you allow self interest before national interest there will be problem.”

Omisore is the first person to pick the SDP governorship nomination form.

He vowed to deliver Osun State to the SDP in the forthcoming governorship election

His words: “Courts have installed more governors in this country than politicians and the people. They have taken advantages of the problem in the system and the none awareness of our public. I am here as a democrat from Osun State. I was in detention and a won election in this county. Nigerians do not celebrate history. And I won every polling unit in 2002.

“Osun State is the worst governed state in this country. The state is in the intensive care now and it needs someone with experience, a person who has done it before to emerge and govern the state. I am sure that very soon I will emerge as the governor. I will do my best to emerge through a free and fair primary. We should put the past issues behind us and move forward and I promise the party, Nigerians and the people of Osun State that I will not fail.”

National Secretary of SDP, Alh. Shehu Gabam, assured that the party will conduct a free and fair primary adding that: “We are convinced that Omisore will deliver Osun State to SDP. Whatever we do in the party we subject it to the feelings of Nigerians. By God’s grace SDP will provide the next president of Nigeria in 2019.

“The party will provide level playing field and conduct a free and fair primaries in Osun State. We believe in the independence of legislature, judiciary and the executive. We will never be supportive of any act that will intimidate the National Assembly. We urged the present administration to allow democracy to grow.”

Former Minister of Information and leader of SDP, Prof. Jerry Gana, was optimistic that the party will go far beyond 2019 election.

He said: “This party is a very serious party. If you are going to transform Nigeria the party structure must be organized. Nigerian should be ready for SDP to transform the nation from poverty to prosperity.

“The SDP has put together some of the best brains in the land. We will give meaning to governance that produce development. Your vote will count in Osun State and we shall win again.”

  • Omisore faults late passage of 2018 budget

FORMER Deputy Governor of Osun State, Senator Iyiola Omisore, on Friday, criticised all arms of government for the late passage and signing of the 2018 budget. Omisore, who was former chairman, Senate Appropriation Committee, is also one of the governorship aspirants, contending for the ticket of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), ahead of the September 22 governorship poll in Osun State. Speaking in Abuja, while purchasing the SDP governorship nomination form, Omisore attributed the late passage and signing of the budget, to lack of commitment among agencies of government. He said: “Our budget process is a problem in this country.

That is the problem we have in this country. They have taken advantages of the problem in the system, and the non awareness of our public.

I am here as a democrat from Osun State. I was in detention and I won election in this country. Nigerians do not celebrate history. I have controlled the masses of Osun State more than two decades. It can only be God. We will deliver Osun State to SDP. Nigerians are tired of PDP and other parties. This party will form national government in 201,” he said.

  • Osun 2018: SDP clears Omisore

The leadership of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Osun State, has declared the former deputy governor of the state, Senator Iyiola Omisore, a bonafide member of the party. The state chairman of the party, Hon. Demola Ishola, at the inauguration oF the steering committee of the party in Osogbo, disclosed that many notable politicians are coming to join the party before the September 22 governorship election.

He described the SDP as the party of the masses, saying plans are underway for national leaders of the party, including Dr. Yemi Farounbi, to come down to Osun for a and  welcome new members into the party. He charged members of the party to start house to house mobilisation of people into the party. Dignitaries at the event include former member of the House of  Representatives, Hon. Bade Falade,  former Commissioner for Works in the state, Dr. Bayo Faforiji, and former legal adviser of the Peoples Democratic Party in the South West, Barr. Ojo Williams.

  • Why I dumped PDP for SDP, by Omisore

•’Omisore may not get SDP governorship ticket’

Senator Iyiola Omisore, a former Osun State deputy governor, has announced his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the Social Democratic Party (SDP).

Omisore, who announced his defection in a statement yesterday in Osogbo, the state capital, said he intended to contest the September 22 governorship election on the platform of SDP.

He said his mission was to rescue the state from what he called years of misrule.

According to him, the PDP in Osun State is in disarray and likely to remain in prolonged political captivity over the next four years.

The statement reads: “…Engaging and working with like-minded leadership, we have sought for an alternative platform that will assure both credible (sic: credibility) and legitimacy that will rescue Osun State from its current reckless misrule.

“Our quest for an alternative political platform is basically in pursuit of a credible political structure that would guarantee that our people enjoy the benefits of accountable leadership at the state level from now.

“Notwithstanding my enormous contributions over the past years or so to building the PDP, after very deep thought and the widest consultations with my God, my family, my supporters in and outside Osun State, it is with great concern that I have made a very expedient decision today to withdraw my membership from the PDP and join the SDP, a party that believes in a balanced, equitable and truly functional Nigeria.

“On the platform of the SDP, I shall, with the support of my supporters, followers and the electorate of the state, seek the nomination to contest for, and by His grace, be elected as the Executive Governor of Osun State on September 22, 2018.”

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Omisore was Osun State deputy governor on the platform of Alliance for Democracy (AD) between 1999 and 2003.

He was also elected to the Senate on the platform of the PDP in 2003 to represent Osun East Senatorial District, while he was in jail.

Also, Senator Omisore, whose loyalists reportedly defected to the SDP, may not find it easy securing the party’s governorship ticket, it was learnt at the weekend.

A governorship aspirant on the platform of the party, Otunba Kola Yemisi Oladeji, said it was wrong for people to refer to Omisore as the governorship aspirant of the SDP when he had not even been recognised as a member of the party.

In a statement, Oladeji said the party’s governorship ticket would not be handed over to Omisore without going through a primary organised by the party.

The SDP stalwart insisted that the fear of primary, which forced Omisore out of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), awaited him in the new party.

He cautioned Omisore’s supporters to stop believing that their candidate possessed the clout that can make him win an election on any platform.

  • Fayose, Obanikoro, Omisore lose N2.273b assets

THE Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has recovered property and cash worth N2.273 billion from Governor Ayodele Fayose, ex-Deputy Governor Iyiola Omisore and a former Minister of State for Defence, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, out of the N4.685 billion allocated to them by the Office of National Security Adviser (ONSA).

The said cash, which was sourced from the $2.1 billion voted for arms procurement, was meant for the 2014 governorship campaign by Fayose and Omisore on the ticket of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The trial of Omisore by EFCC is expected to begin any moment from now because charges have been preferred and filed against him.

The EFCC is awaiting a date from the court for the arraignment of Omisore, who might be re-arrested.

But the prosecution of Fayose is withheld till after the completion of his tenure and immediately he hands over to the next governor of the state.

But Obanikoro, who was allegedly the courier of the fund to Fayose and Omisore, was still being investigated by detectives following more cases he was allegedly linked with.

A fact-sheet obtained from the EFCC revealed that out of the N4.685 billion, detectives traced N2.0030 billion to Omisore; N685 million to Obanikoro and N1.3 billion and $5.377 million (at the exchange rate of N168 to $1) to Fayose.

The document said: “The N4.685 billion was disbursed by ONSA through a company, Sylvan McNamara Limited, which was submitted by Obanikoro for onward transfer to Fayose and Omisore for their gubernatorial election in 2014 on the platform of the PDP.

“Out of the sum, Omisore got N1.7 billion and additional N330 million was given to him through his company, Fimex Guilt Limited, bringing his campaign slush cash to N2.0030 billion.

“From his share, Omisore has paid back N350 million. Although he pleaded for more time, EFCC is expecting the balance from him.”

The fact-sheet stated that charges have been preferred against Omisore.

The document gave the details of how arms cash was allocated to Fayose and the retention of N685 million by Obanikoro.

It said: On his part, Fayose was allocated N1.3 billion and $5.377 million (at the exchange rate of N168. The $5,377,000 was handed over in cash by Obanikoro to Fayose while the N1.3 billion was received by Fayose’s associate, Mr. Abiodun Agbele, in the presence of the ex-Minister’s Aide-de-Camp, who also accompanied them to the bank along with bank officials.

“From the $5 million, Fayose gave his Personal Assistant, Agbele about $1million, which he exchanged to Naira and paid for properties on behalf of the governor. Detectives suspected that Fayose added more of the N1.3 billion cash to what he gave Agbele to buy the affected assets.

“The properties worth N1.8 billion purchased with the said proceeds of crime have been recovered from Fayose and his sister, Moji Ladeji.

“These assets include four in Lagos (N1.1 billion) and two in Abuja worth about N500 million to N700 million.

“But Fayose has been claiming that he used his company, Spotless to obtain a loan of N120 million from Zenith Bank as part of what he used to buy one of the properties in Abuja. We are already tracking how he disbursed the N1.3 billion.

“A prima facie case has been established against Fayose but he is enjoying immunity from prosecution as enshrined in the 1999 Constitution. He will, however, face trial as soon as he hands over power to his successor.

“But the associate of the governor, Abiodun Agbele, has been charged to court accordingly.”

Regarding the investigation of Obanikoro, the fact-sheet indicated that “the ex-minister retained N685 million out of the N4.685 billion given to him by ONSA.

“A sum of N123 million has been recovered from Obanikoro, who claimed he was only asked to deliver the cash to both Fayose and Omisore for their gubernatorial campaign.

“The ex-minister is still under investigation following some cases allegedly still linked with him.”

•Judges nullify victory at high court

THE Court of Appeal yesterday ordered two accounts of Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose domiciled with the Zenith Bank to be frozen.

The court gave the order having been convinced by the argument of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) that they were used to keep proceeds of crime.

The three-man panel, led Justice Joseph Shagbaor Ikyegh, allowed the EFCC appeal and upturned the judgment of the Federal High Court, Ado-Ekiti, which was delivered about one year and four months ago.

Other members of the panel are Justice Boloukurumo Moses Ugo and Justice Mohammed Mustapha.

The judgment of the lower court, which unblocked the governor’s two accounts, was delivered by Justice Taiwo Taiwo on December 13, 2016.

Fayose withdrew N5 million from one of the accounts immediately and transferred the sum of N75 to his lawyer, Chief Mike Ozekhome (SAN).

Dissatisfied with the Ado-Ekiti Federal High Court’s verdict, the EFCC filed an appeal at the appellate court on three grounds.

The anti-graft agency contended that the immunity enjoyed by the governor did not preclude his account from being frozen.

The Appeal Court allowed the appeal and held that Fayose’s accounts, which were unblocked by the Federal High Court, be frozen.

The court delivered the judgment upon reading the record of the appeal and after hearing EFCC’s counsel, Mr. Rotimi Oyedepo, Fayose’s counsel, Mike Ozekhome and Zenith Bank’s counsel, Mr. Oluwasegun Ayinde.

Justice Ikyegh ordered “that the appeal is meritorious and, having resolved all three issues agitated in the appeal in appellant’s (EFCC’s) favour.

“That the appeal is hereby allowed; that the judgment delivered by Justice Taiwo Taiwo of the Federal High Court, Ekiti Judicial Division, on the 13th day of December, 2016, granting the claims of the 1st respondent in Suit No: FHC/AD/CS/27/2016 is hereby set aside.”

The two accounts had earlier been frozen by Justice Mohammed Shuaibu of Federal High Court, Lagos in an ex-parte motion brought by the EFCC.

  • Atiku, Makarfi, Dickson, Omisore, others felicitate with Christians at Easter

Former Vice President and chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has felicitated with Christians as they mark the ressurection of Jesus Christ.

In this, he was joined by Governor Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa State, PDP chieftain and former Kaduna State governor, Senator Ahmed Makarfi and former Osun State deputy governor, Senator Iyiola Omisore.

In a statement released by his media office in Abuja to mark the Easter celebrations, Atiku called on Nigerians to emulate the virtues of love and sacrifice which characterised the life of Jesus Christ.

The Waziri Adamawa described those two qualities as essential to the unity that Nigeria so desperately needs at this time when vested and provincial interests threaten to tear our nation apart.

He also encouraged Nigeria’s leaders to use the opportunity of the Easter celebration to reflect on their stewardship to their people and to the nation.

“Our leaders at all levels should follow the virtues that define this season – sacrifice, love and charity – and come together to help all Nigerians resolve the differences that divide us.

We must not allow those who seek to divide us to pretend as if our problems are as a result of another ethnic or religious group,” Atiku said.

On his part, Senator Omisore charged Christians as well as all Nigerians  to demonstrate the essence of Easter as exemplified by Jesus Christ, by living in love and harmony with one another.

Omisore, a former Chairman Senate Committee on Appropriation, gave this charge in a statement he issued to felicitate with Nigerians on Easter celebrations.

“As Nigerians, we must eschew acts that will divide us further. We must embrace Christ’s attitude of living in love and harmony with ourselves and our neighbours,” he said.

“It is not by chance that God put all of us in this environment called Nigeria. Whether as Muslims or Christians, we must remember always that we are our brother’s keeper.

“We must promote all the enriching values that make our lives and society embodiments of godliness.”

Omisore, who was the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2014 governorship election in Osun State, urged the people of the state to be steadfast in their prayers.

Bayelsa State governor, Hon, Henry Seriake Dickson, urged Nigerians, particularly Christians to jealously cherish and guide their faith by living a Christ-like life of selfless service, sacrifice, love and righteousness.

The governor, in a press statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Francis Ottah Agbo, noted that, without the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, “our faith as Christians would have been a fallacy.”

While stressing that Nigeria is presently at a crossroads, the governor called on Bayelsans to love one another, pray fervently for the peace, prosperity and stability of the nation and sacrifice for the common good of Bayelsa State.

Governor Dickson also solicited for the maximum cooperation of the people and leaders of the state and the Ijaw Nation to enable his Restoration Government  consolidate on its legacy projects in order to finish strong by 2020.

He said: “As we celebrate Easter, which of course is the basis of our faith as Christians, I urge Nigerians, particularly Bayelsans, to emulate our Lord Jesus Christ by words and deeds.

“We must love one another and sacrifice for the common good of Bayelsa State and Nigeria.

“This country is facing daunting challenges which call for fervent prayers and hard work to surmount.

“Our Government in the last six years has put Bayelsa State on the path of peace and prosperity. I therefore, solicit the continued cooperation and support of leaders and the people of the state to enable our  Restoration Government consolidate on its life-changing legacy projects and finish strong.”

In his own message, Makarfi said in spite of various challenges, there is still hope for Nigeria.

Jesus’ death and resurrection, he said, are everlasting reminders that it is possible for Nigeria to overcome its difficult situation and embrace great virtues.

He asked Nigerians to eschew bitterness and embrace the spiritual legacies of Jesus Christ which can immensely facilitate Nigeria’s peace and progress.

He sent “warm felicitations and greetings to the Nigerian Christian community, and indeed all Nigerians on this auspicious occasion of the Easter celebrations in memory of the legendary spirit of sacrifice and selflessness espoused and exhibited by Jesus Christ.”

It is imperative, according to him, that this period be “used by all for meditation and sober reflections on the life and times of Jesus Christ and his sacrifices, with a view to imbibing  such virtues as humility, forgiveness, tolerance, good neighbourliness, respect and empathy for others’ feelings as well as love for one another.”

The Chairman, Senate Committee on Local Content, Senator Solomon Adeola, charged  his constituents and Nigerians in general to remain peaceful and exhibit the Christian virtues of sacrifice, love and abiding faith in a better tomorrow as exemplified in the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Adeola said the season symbolises a new beginning of hope and redemption for all mankind, adding that for all true Christians, the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ means that all challenges confronting individuals and mankind are ultimately surmountable with fervent belief in God.

The senator said the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ gave mankind hope of a new beginning and a better future, stressing that in spite of enormous challenges confronting the nation, Nigeria is at the threshold of a better tomorrow.

  • Aregbesola’s aide blasts Omisore over new road

Aregbesola’s aide blasts Omisore over new road

Osun State commissioner for innovation, science and technology, Engr. Remi Omowaiye, has taken time to educate and scold Senator Iyiola Omisore on his misleading allegation that the newly inaugurated standardised 2.8km “Workers’ Drive” was funded by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation) as a blatant lie and miscarriage of the fundamental objective of the international organisation.

The Ijesa-born technocrat turned politician made this disclosure during a radio programme monitored in Ilesa. Omowaiye who was once a consultant to UNESCO stated emphatically that “UNESCO’s strategic objectives don’t include construction of roads, and Omisore and his deranged cohorts should be fully aware by now, that the era of gullibility is over in Osun where in their usual antics spread falsehood, blackmail and cheap propaganda against the government of Aregbesola. Our people are wiser than them in all ramifications.”

He further asserted, “this issue is about common sense and logical reasoning, if Omisore’s assertion were to be true, won’t UNESCO as a body have come physically for the inauguration of the project they sponsored? Why is it that till date there’s no erection of sign post by the same organisation on their involvement or contribution to the completion of the road? Why didn’t the construction project terminate at the entrance of the Osun groove?” he asked.

“Geographically, the workers’ drive is off Osun groove, it is a stretch of Olaiya – Isale Osun – It’s Olokan road. To buttress this point, the Apostolic church whose building was demolished to pave way for the dualised road and a representative of the 147 persons compensated for their demolished properties gave words of commendation to the government and not UNESCO. This project is one of the motivational ways to continuously appreciate the workers of Osun for their patience, steadfastness and unshaken support to the APC-led administration and implementation of her people-oriented policies.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the road was largely funded from the Omoluabi Infrastructure Conservation Fund 2012 as enacted by the Osun State house of assembly, upon which the governor though a letter dated November 27th 2015 sought approval for its usage. It is now understandably clear how Omisore and the PDP family feel each time they drive through the well-constructed, qualitative and standard roads, measuring over 1000kms spread across all the 30 LGAs of the state,” he added.

  • Why we invited Omisore, by Police

•Ex deputy governor yet to show up

Senator Iyiola Omisore was invited in connection with a 2014 assault case against the late senator Isiaka Adeleke because of the request by the Director of Public prosecution (DPP), Osun State Police Commissioner Femi Fimihan said yesterday.

The one-time deputy governor who was asked to report to the police on Friday but who said in a statement he issued at the weekend that he would report yesterday did not show up at the state police command headquarters.

The police chief said yesterday: “The action of the police is within the ambit of the law. The Directorate of Public Prosecution in the Ministry of Justice requested for the case file and we gave them. They realised that the statement by Senator Omisore was not there and the DPP requested that we should provide the statement.

“That was why he was invited. He was not the only one invited. People should not read politics into the activities of the police. We are only investigating a criminal case and we are doing our job as demanded by the law.

“The actions and activities of the police are not regulated by politics and sentiment. We don’t act on sentiment.

“The case of assault on the late Senator Isiaka Adeleke was kept in view and when the DPP asked for the case file, it had to be provided.”
