Omotola leads artistes in fight against poverty

Nollywood actress, Omotola Jolade-Ekeinde, together with fellow entertainers, Waje and Yemi Alade have teamed up to create a brand new song titled Strong Girl, a rally meant to empower girls and women everywhere.

According to information, nine artists from seven African countries came together in South Africa earlier this month to write and record the track. They were joined by superstar actress and activist, Omotola, who stars in the Strong Girl video. The women are calling for action because “poverty is sexist, and we won’t end it unless world leaders act now to help girls and women reach their full potential.”

The track and video was released on May 13, 2015 along with a global day of action amplifying the songs message and recruiting thousands worldwide to the fight for justice.

This year, new global goals to end poverty will be set by world leaders. To be truly transformative, the goals must focus on the countries and the people that are worst off, and that includes girls and women. Evidence shows that investing in girls and women helps their families, communities and whole economies too.

Speaking about the campaign, Omotola said; “I am fortunate to be a young woman living her dreams and a trailblazer of my generation but I also recognise that many women and girls are not so fortunate. Women and girls are disproportionately affected by the injustice of poverty and inequality. But when we invest in women and girls, we increase and accelerate the chances of overcoming extreme poverty.”

Their call-to-action is already backed by more 36 of the world’s most powerful women, including Beyoncé, Meryl Streep, Lady Gaga, Angelique Kidjo and other leading women from the worlds of business, arts, politics and activism.

    Omotola chides trekking youths

IT appears that Nollywood actress, Omotola Jolade-Ekeinde is becoming more vocal on issues of national importance. On Monday, the actress queried the state of Nigeria when she tweeted; “Endless Queues for fuel, No electricity and power surges causing fire outbreaks! WHY?”

Shortly after that, she rose to the defence of Senator-elect and Chairman of Silverbird Group, Ben Murray-Bruce who has been under attack for expressing his views on corruption on Twitter. Bruce had on Tuesday tweeted that he does not fly first class. He also posted a picture of him on the flight to prove his point.

While many accused him of political grandstanding and playing to the gallery, Omotola defended him in a series of tweets.

“And to those criticizing @benmurraybruce! Isn’t this why Nigeria has no helpers? You stone to death those who have the courage to step forward,” she said.

This time, she has a word of reproach for young Nigerians who are engaged in a cross-country trek to congratulate either the winner or loser of the recently held presidential election, depending on which side of the fence they are aligned with.

“Silly youths trekking their futures way. You don’t trek to bring awareness to your suffering plights but trek to celebrate politicians? Smh,” she wrote.

Hollywood diva, Omotola Jolade-Ekeinde is in a class of her own. In recent times, the actress has been garnering recognition of global proportions and it would seem that there is no stopping her.

To add to her list of firsts, an excited Omosexy, as she is fondly called, on Sunday, announced that her Facebook page has clocked two million followers.

“Whoop!Whoop! 2 * #million likes on Facebook today. 5/4/15. Amazing! What an amazing Easter gift. Thanks to you all…remember two years ago, we got to 1million (1st in Africa) on my birthday. Now as we celebrate Christ’s resurrection, you have gifted me with your 2nd million!!! May everything in all y’all’s life begin to rise and blow your minds in Jesus name,” an excited Omotola posted on her fan page.

    •kicks off 20-city world tour

All roads led to Stella Maris College in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, as actress Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde kicked-off celebrations, marking her 20 years in the Nigerian movie industry, otherwise called Nollywood.

The famous Nollywood star also used the event to flag off her tour of 20 cities in the world, as part of the programmes outlined for the celebration, which commenced at the weekend.

To Omosexy, as she is popularly called, the event was an opportunity to encourage younger generations to believe in themselves for a better nation.

“That was my motivation,” said the Nollywood star, “to meet with young children”.

She also used the occasion to launch her pet project ‘I gat value’ and also motivated the young pupils by sharing her experience while growing up to stardom.

According to Omotola, “what is lacking most among us in Nigeria is value. We don’t feel valued. I wonder if our government care about us. What is the value of a Nigerian child? How many people died in France and the whole world was in France? Even our President is sending commiserating messages to them and his not acknowledging all the things happening here in northern Nigeria. Are northerners not part of Nigerians anymore?” She asked.

She said, as father of the nation, who was voted in during the 2011 election, it was expected of President Goodluck Jonathan to be accountable and protect the citizens.

“…today we have Nigerians bombing one another, killed and all scattered. It appears nobody cares anymore. There is jungle justice everywhere and nobody is being held. How many Nigerian students have died in this country? Who is protecting them and fighting for their cause?

However, the thespian emphasised the need for Nigerians to value themselves, irrespective of whether the government cared about its citizens or otherwise.

The celebrity, who has carved a niche for herself in the industry, is considered a major player in Nollywood, the third-ranked entertainment industry globally.

The students described Omotola as a living legend and a role model to many of them. They celebrated her as a humble wife and great mother who has kept her marriage intact unlike her contemporaries and urged her to share her secret of success so they could grow to be like her.

Earlier, representative of the pupils, Isigwe Chiamaka, in her opening remarks, celebrated the actress’ achievements and thanked her for choosing their school as a flag-off point for her world city tour.

Omotola, who is also a United Nations Peace Ambassador, is married to Captain Matthew Ekeinde and they have four children.

Popular Motivational Speaker, Linus Okorie, told the students that to become a leader was a personal choice they must make. He advised them to own a dream book which could be used to write their ideas and embark on research

“Identifying your purpose and locating your talent is what makes you better and greater than your contemporaries,” said Okorie, who has been a Leadership Coach for 20 years. “Set goals to be great and focus on your goals.”

Okorie said the actress’ visit to the school showed that the school has potentials capable of repositioning the country.

Omosexy eventually took pictures with the school officials as well as students.

Pat Utomi, Omotola, others gather for Nigerian Entertainment Conference

In an effort to chart a new course in the nation’s entertainment industry, a number of dignitaries, last Wednesday, converged on the Grand Ballroom of Eko Hotel and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos at the second edition of the Nigerian Entertainment Conference organised by Nigerian Entertainment Today.

Hosted by comedian and TV show host, Tee A, the conference featured six different sessions: Media, Business, Music, IT (Info Technology), Social Responsibility and Nollywood. Four of the six sessions were preceded by keynote speeches delivered by Prof. Pat Utomi (Business), Tuface Idibia (Music), Social Responsibility (Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde) and Nollywood (Emeka Mba).

Anchored by different moderators, each session included a discussion that featured a group of panelists discussing different topics as they affect the entertainment business in Nigeria. The panelists included comedian Basketmouth, Storm 360 Chairman, Obi Asika, Jobberman co-founder, Ope Awoyemi, pop artiste, Dr SID, Toni Kan, Chairman of COSON, Tony Okoroji, Olisa Adibua, actor Ramsey Nouah and founder of the AfricanMovie Academy Awards, Peace Anyiam-Osigwe, among many others.

The conference, popularly known as NECLive, kicked off with a welcome speech by the Editor-In-Chief of NET Newspaper, Ayeni Adekunle.

In his speech, Ayeni, who was the chairman/executive producer of the conference, talked about the entertainment industry’s many shortcomings, despite the perception of its’ progress.

“Today should be indeed a happy day. But it’s not. I feel pained because I know that there’s so much work to be done. And we’re not even scratching the surface. How can we get the best from the system, if the industry is not well structured and funded?” he asked.

NECLive 2014 highlighted a number of problems plaguing the entertainment industry, including distribution, piracy, content ownership, collective rights and royalty, absence of infrastructure and social Responsibility.

Speaking on the theme for this year’s conference was: ‘Creating Pathways to the Future’, NET Editorial Board Chairman, Chris Ihidero, said:  “The future is changing rapidly, such that whatever we know at present pales into insignificance at an alarming rate’.  All over the world, rapid manifestations are occurring in the production and distribution of entertainment while we are still largely playing catch up with out-dated platforms. If we were behind by a few decades before, we may be moving behind by perhaps half a century if we do not properly chart pathways to the future of the Nigerian entertainment industry.”

Prof. Pat Utomi, who spoke on “Solving the Distribution Problem Once and For All”, stressed the importance of those involved in providing entertainment on radio, television, film and theatre to treat their works as importantly as any other business in order for it to thrive.

“Showbusiness has to be treated like business. And because you love it, you need to learn how to apply things that people have learned from enterprise. Our idea was to set up an alternative distribution structure that will better serve the interest of both content owners and consumers, so we set up Exodus Entertainment with the sole aim of effectively distributing Nigeria entertainment products (CD, DVD and Magazine) to all of Nigeria.”

Meanwhile, African Pop icon, 2face Idibia, who spoke on “Slaying the Collective Rights Monster”, stated that one of the major problems was the issue of ignorance or lack of understanding of the subject. “Artistes and music executives/ administrators have to take time out to learn about the ins and outs of the subject so as to understand what they are getting into.”

He also said there should be only one CMO (collective management organization) for a developing nation like Nigeria. “How has having multiple CMOs impacted the subject of royalties and the owners of the rights in Nigeria? One thing is for sure, having more than one CMO operating within the industry has not helped further our cause as rights owners because, being a developing nation, everyone is busy looking out for their own interests,” he said.

In her paper entitled: “Why We should Care”, Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde, raised two major issues in her presentation: education and leadership. She said that although success is not compulsorily tied to education, it is advisable to be educated. “There are many layers to being famous or being a celebrity and education prepares us for these layers so we can reach our full and be trusted with more responsibilities. Social responsibility, as you can guess, is a lot of responsibility and expression. You might at some point be required to speak to different types of group of people as I am doing right now … Simply put, talent will Never be Enough,” she said.

The fourth speaker and final speaker of the day, Emeka Mba, delivered a paper on ‘Building a Sustainable Film Industry.’

The current Director- General of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) said it was important to recognize that the old order in Nollywood is changing.

“Those who choose to maintain the status quo will find themselves on the wrong side of history and I dare say on the short end of the money stick,” Mba said. He also advised practitioners to be curious rather than critical.  According to him, “Ask questions that provoke reflection and further inquiry. Do not create a fortress mentality. Ideas don’t work unless you speak up.”

Just like the inaugural edition, the conference ended with the NET Honours to18 individuals, includin Ebenezer Obey, Onyeka Onwenu, Christy Essien-Igbokwe, Sunny Okosun, Daddy Showkey, OJB Jezreel, Jide Kosoko, Adebayo Salami, among others.

  • Why Genevieve, Omotola are ‘jobless’, says Obi Emelonye

Why Genevieve, Omotola are ‘jobless’, says Obi Emelonye

Ever paused to ask why Genevieve Nnaji and Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde, two Nollywood famed actresses, are virtually disappearing from your home video screens these days?

If you can’t find any answer to this poser, then, you will have to turn to ace producer, Obi Emelonye, for a likely hint.

According to the producer and director of Mirror Boy and Last Flight to Abuja, the actresses are victims of their own success, as few opportunities have come their way recently.

In an interview, Emelonye was quoted to have said that “Genevieve and Omotola are the two biggest actresses we have in Nollywood. They cannot afford to charge less than their status and that is where the problem comes in. Their charges are probably above what the industry can afford. Their charges are like half of the entire production budget of a movie, so which producer can afford that?”

“What they can do now, as it is with other big stars all over the world, is that they should begin to fund their own productions and act in them. They can act whatever role(s) will enhance their brands. They need to start a production company now and push themselves because they need to remain relevant and must not be seen as jobless. If corporate bodies perceive them as jobless, they won’t want to do business with them and might even price them cheap.”

    Omotola acquires choice property

IN what may be described as another moment of glory, popular Nollywood actress, Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde, has reportedly purchased a multimillion naira property on Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way, Ikeja, Lagos.

    Omotola Jalade’s season of honour

No doubt, Nollywood actress Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde is a successful thespian; the rate of recent honours the mother of four is getting may have increased her scorecard as one of the most-sought artistes in Nigeria.

Only last week, Omo-sexy as she is fondly called, was in Doha, Qatar, speaking at this year’s edition of the World Innovation Summit for Education (WISE), which held from October 29 to 31. The actress was said to have joined the discourse on the topic: ‘Reinventing Education for Life‘. It was not clear how she got elected to represent the country, but there are indication that her choice by the organisers could have stemmed from her public comment on the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) four-month strike on Twitter. Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde had twitted: “Why are Students of the Most Populous Black Nation in the World, “Giant” of Africa NOT in school? Where are all the educational funds?”

Coming on the heels of her participation at the Doha summit, the actress got another feat; the Ebony Vanguard Award at the Seventh Birmingham International Film Festival, which held on Saturday, November 2.

Omo-sexy’s accolade in 2013, it appears is not over yet. Indication emerged yesterday that the actress, will, as part of activities marking the 60th birthday and seventh installation anniversary of the Osemawe of Ondo Kingdom, Oba Victor Kiladejo, be conferred with honarary chieftaincy title.

She is to join other honourees, including Senate President David Mark; Minister of Communication and Technology, Mrs. Bolaji Johnson; President of Black Archaeologists in America, Olakunle Akinboboye; and Business mogul, Raymond Akinyele, in the week-long celebrations, which began yesterday.

Chairman of the Planning and Organising Committee Chief Noah Fadayomi noted that the awardees were divided into two categories, with Mark and other non-indigenes in the first category, and picked due to their commitment to nation building.

Johnson, Omotola Jalade, Akinboboye and others, according to Fadayomi, are indigenes of Ondo town, who have been chosen due to their commitment to the development of the ancient community.
