National honours: Obasa salutes Amuka-Pemu, Onanuga, Babarinsa, other journalism icons

Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, has commended the national honours recently conferred on several prominent journalists for their outstanding contributions to the growth of democracy in Nigeria.

Among the honourees celebrated by Obasa are Sam Amuka-Pemu, publisher of Vanguard newspapers; Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu; veteran columnist, Dare Babarinsa; and Dapo Olorunyomi, founder and publisher of Premium Times.

Others include Kunle Ajibade, Executive Editor at TheNews; Seye Kehinde, publisher of City People magazine; Nosa Igiebor, Editor-in-Chief of TELL magazine; and the late Bagauda Kaltho, a senior correspondent with TheNews, who tragically lost his life in a 1996 bomb blast in Kaduna State.

The decorated media icons were among 139 Nigerians honoured by President Tinubu during the June 12 Democracy Day celebrations for their significant roles in promoting and defending democratic values.

Speaker Obasa’s tribute was conveyed in a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Research, Media, and Documentation, Adeshina Oyetayo, in which he praised the journalists for their courage, resilience, and lasting impact on Nigeria’s democratic evolution.

According to him, “It is heartwarming to see these journalism greats being honoured for their courage, resilience, and steadfastly using the power of their pen to fight the tyranny of military dictatorship, risking their lives and livelihood, braving the odds, the guns, and arbitrary arrests and imprisonment, to fight for the enthronement, growth, and survival of democracy in Nigeria. They are the true heroes of our democracy. They deserve all the honour bestowed on them.”

Obasa further thanked them for their labour of love and sacrifices for Nigeria and implored them to keep their passion for a better society aflame and alive. He implored them not be slowed down by age or any existential issue.

“The Nigeria you risked it all for is almost here. And we need you to continue to be the watchdog of our democracy,” Obasa stated.

Interestingly, Amuka-Pemu, whom President Tinubu described as ‘a legendary journalist and publisher that has remained true to his lifetime calling’ , could not have got a more fitting 90th birthday gift than the conferment of the Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON) title on him. Amuka-Pemu, founder of The Vanguard newspaper, turns 90 on Friday, June 13.

Like Amuka-Pemu; Onanuga, founder of TheNews magazine, and Babarinsa, co-founder of TELL magazine, were also conferred with the CON title. Olorunyomi, Ajibade, Igiebor, and Kehinde got the Officer of the Order of the Niger, OON, title.

Conversely, Kaltho, who got a posthumous OON, was one of the journalists who paid the supreme price during the despotic regime of the late General Sani Abacha.

  • Reforms will ease cost of living soon, says Onanuga

Reforms will ease cost of living soon, says Onanuga

Going by the words of Mr. Bayo Onanuga, Senior Special Adviser (SSA) on Media and Information Strategy to President Bola Tinubu, Nigerians will soon experience a reduction in the cost of living.

The effects of the administration’s economic reforms will soon start to materialise, the SSA told reporters in Lagos yesterday.

According to him, the positive effects of President Tinubu’s policies would soon be felt across all segments of the country.

Onanuga highlighted that President Tinubu has not only introduced progressive reforms but also tackled challenges that previous administrations avoided, a report in the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) said.

He argued that two years cannot be used as a sufficient yardstick to fully measure the administration’s achievements, noting that policy experts typically assess the impact of policies over a period of 10 to 12 years.

“The President’s years in office began with clear policy directions and implementation. A lot of reforms have taken place across sectors. The President has laid down many fundamentals that would ensure growth,” he stated.

He acknowledged that while the positives of the President’s actions over the past two years were gradually trickling down, a significant paradigm shift had occurred in the economy, addressing many pre-existing problems.

Alluding to the pre-subsidy removal situation,  Onanuga said: “There was no fuel. Many stations were saying no fuel, no fuel. What was happening at that time was that the NNPC had reached the bottom point. It had no money to import fuel, it claimed that it was owing suppliers about six billion dollars and the government was owing it about four trillion dollars. So, it could not import anymore.”

On the concerns being raced about borrowing, Onanuga clarified that it is a common practice globally, with even countries like the United States (U.S.) engaging in it.

“Nigeria has abundant resources that we are harnessing, but not as much readily available money as people might think,” he explained.

He stressed that borrowed funds were not squandered but rather used for their intended purposes, citing large-scale projects like the coastal roads that necessitate external financing due to their immense benefits.

Regarding currency devaluation, Onanuga explained that it is a universal economic principle, citing instances where even the United Kingdom (UK) and the United States (U.S.) have resorted to it.

“Even UK and the U.S at some point devalued. These are economic principles that are universal and cannot be changed because it is Nigeria,” he asserted.

He added that the government had made tough decisions and simultaneously created opportunities through infrastructure development, noting that many ongoing road constructions were not initially part of the budget.

Onanuga stated that Nigeria had seen an increase in production and a rise in disposable income.

He pointed to companies like Nestle and Nigerian Breweries, which initially faced challenges but were now sourcing materials locally and reporting profits.

The presidential spokesman said: “This economy has opened up opportunities in many forms for Nigerians – those who can really exploit it. And they are making money.”

He gave examples of individuals who have made fortunes from exporting agricultural products like cocoa and even Zobo.

According to him, many companies are now investing and producing in Nigeria, and these positive shifts will soon become evident and tangible for all Nigerians.

Onanuga stressed the importance of public understanding of the economic context, saying: “we don’t do our people any good when we keep on pushing stories of gloom and doom without allowing them to see the truth, without allowing them to see the context, and without allowing them to know that there’s actually light at the end of the tunnel.”

Port Harcourt Refinery is revitalized, ready for growth – Onanuga

The Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, has addressed ongoing concerns about the state of the Port Harcourt Refinery Complex following a fact-finding mission on Wednesday.

Onanuga, part of a delegation that inspected the facility, described it as a transformed, functional operation working steadily toward full capacity.

The delegation was conducted on a comprehensive tour of the facility, including its computerised control room, loading bay, and other critical sections, by the Managing Director of the Port Harcourt Refinery, Ibrahim Onoja.

Onanuga reported that the team raised key concerns about the refinery’s operations and received reassuring answers from officials on-site.

He said contrary to circulating rumours, the refinery is currently operating at 70% of its installed capacity, with plans for a gradual increase in production.

Onanuga also confirmed that crude oil is being supplied regularly to the facility, debunking claims of shortages.

The refinery is producing a range of petroleum products, including kerosene, low-pour fuel oil, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), diesel, and gasoline.

Samples of these products were tested during the visit, further affirming the refinery’s operational status.

According to Onanuga, a significant overhaul has modernized the once-aging facility, saying upgraded infrastructure includes parts that had remained unchanged for 27 years, as well as sections of a newly installed 300-kilometre pipeline network.

The improvements have elevated the refinery to modern standards, he noted.

The fact-finding team also inspected the co-located refinery, commissioned in 1989, where workers were actively replacing old components.

While officials refrained from providing a completion timeline, Onanuga expressed optimism about its imminent operational readiness.

Commending the efforts of NNPC Limited and the refinery team, Onanuga stated that the revitalization has rescued the facility from obsolescence.

He urged Nigerians to disregard misinformation about the refinery’s state, asserting that it is on track to becoming a fully restored national asset.

Onanuga concluded by declaring the fact-finding mission a success, putting to rest widespread doubts about the Port Harcourt Refinery Complex and its future.

Tinubu never called himself Petroleum Minister – Onanuga

The Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, has said that his principal has never claimed the title of Minister of Petroleum.

Onanuga said the Petroleum Ministry has two ministers supervised by President Tinubu.

The presidential spokesman revealed this in an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Sunday.

He said: “The President has never called himself the Minister of Petroleum; it’s you people in the media. We have two ministers and as far as this President is concerned, we have two ministers of petroleum, and one of them focuses on gas.

“That’s an area that this government discovered in the past that Nigeria neglected and Nigeria is more of a gas country than an oil country; President Tinubu is focusing on gas.

“Recently, Obasanjo said he made a mistake during his time by not focusing on gas and Tinubu is rectifying that by making sure we focus on gas. The president supervises all his ministers; he’s in charge of everything.”

  • Fuel subsidies: Tinubu government transparent, says presidency

Fuel subsidies: Tinubu government transparent, says presidency

The presidency has addressed ongoing narratives on fuel subsidies, criticising the federal government while alleging deceit.

The special adviser to the president on information and strategy, Bayo Onanuga, in a statement via his X handle on Tuesday, September 3, clarified that the Tinubu-led government “did not lie about fuel subsidies.”

According to Onanuga, the government has maintained its policy of no longer paying fuel subsidies since President Bola Tinubu’s deregulation of the PMS sector in May 2023, with subsidy provisions disappearing from the budget.

The president’s spokesman emphasised that the only truth that has come to light is the laudable decision of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) to absorb rising petrol costs despite having been under threat due to rising crude costs and devaluation of the Naira.

He said: “I have read a series of articles attacking the Federal Government for not telling the truth about fuel subsidy payments, following NNPC Limited’s admittance it was owing suppliers some $6 billion.

“Some of the stories have been written with relish, as the authors believed they have uncovered some scoops.

“The truth is that there is no discovery. No lie uncovered. The government has been faithful to its policy that it was no longer going to pay fuel subsidies since President Tinubu announced the deregulation of the PMS sector on 29 May 2023. Since then, subsidy provisions have disappeared from the budget. It was not in the Supplementary budget of 2023, not in the 2024 budget and the amended 2024 budget.

“So, the giddy headlines about the so-called unravelling of the Tinubu government’s subsidy payment; and return of subsidy were not justifiable.

“Rather what has unravelled was the commendable disposition of the oil company owned by all the tiers of government to absorb the rising costs of petrol at the pump and protect the Nigerian consumer. That generous disposition by NNPC Limited, backed by a compassionate president unwilling to let the people suffer, has been under threat for months, because of the rising cost of crude and the devalued Naira,”

Onanuga highlighted the insolvency being faced by the NNPCL as a result of its inability to maintain a balance sheet price differential thus, impacting the government’s ability to function.

He said: “The NNPC cried out recently because it can no longer sustain the price differential on its balance sheet without becoming insolvent. The situation has greater implications for the ability of the three tiers of government to function as the NNPC has failed to pay into the Federation Account, the money that should go to the government.”

The presidential spokesman, however, insisted NNPCL must make difficult choices to ensure its survival, as well as maintain government engines, and petrol supply at the pumps.

Onanuga noted such was the unfolding scenario, adding that the game changer and big relief giver may well be the Dangote refinery and other local refineries which will become the fuel suppliers to the local market.

“When Dangote Refinery and other refineries, including government-owned Port Harcourt Refinery, come fully on stream, our country and economy will benefit on all fronts. There will be many good-paying jobs that will be created along the value chain. There will also be a drop in the huge demand for foreign exchange to import petroleum products,” he added.

In a post on his X handle on Monday, the President’s spokesman said the aircraft was bought following recommendation to replace the B737-700(BBJ) after an investigative hearing by the National Assembly.

According to him, the legislative arm of the government had questioned the aircraft’s safety record and cost efficiency, especially after it malfunctioned during Tinubu’s trip to Saudi Arabia.
