Political leaders are humans like us, says Onanuga

The special adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga has broken silence on the slip of the President during the democracy day celebration in Abuja.

The Nation reported that President Bola Tinubu led Nigerians from all walks of life at the Eagles Square, Abuja on Wednesday, to commemorate the nation’s 25th Democracy Day anniversary.

President Tinubu, accompanied to the ceremony by the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, arrived the venue around 10:03 am,  was received by dignitaries, led by Vice President Kashim Shettima.

Reacting to the incident that happened during the event, Onanuga said that the president’s slip shouldn’t be used as a distraction for the importance of the Democracy Day.

He wrote: “President Tinubu is not a superman. He is human like all of us. President Biden has had several slips in the last three years. Even the younger Barack Obama slipped while he was a president. Political leaders are human. Slipping should not detract from the import of Democracy Day celebration.”

‘You are harming people you claim you are fighting for’, Onanuga slams NLC, TUC

The special adviser to President Tinubu on information and strategy, Bayo Onanuga, criticized the nationwide strike organized by the labour unions.

He claimed that the strike was harming Nigerians by disrupting activities in hospitals, airports, and many other government agencies.

Onanuga made this statement in response to a photo showing travellers being stranded at airports across the country.

He wrote: “It’s saddening that Labour could go to this extreme. But it is not surprising to the perceptive minds. Labour is harming the Nigerian people they claim to be fighting for. Today, many sick Nigerians cannot access medical care at government hospitals.

“Not even those with critical medical conditions. It appears labour is playing politics by other means. Many of the affiliates of the two central unions, NLC and TUC are members and supporters of the Labour Party.

“They logically bear ill will and grudges against the Tinubu administration. What is clear is that the issue they claim to be fighting for cannot be resolved by blackmail or sabotage, it cannot even be resolved by the federal government unilaterally. The Labour leaders will still have to return to the negotiating table.”

Commercial banks, Ministries, Departments, Agencies of government, and state government-owned hospitals have been shut down due to the nationwide strike called by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) that started on Monday, June 3.

…accuses Obi of introducing dangerous passions to Nigerian politics

President Bola Tinubu’s administration has said it will not allow the thought or activities of the followers of the former presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the last election, Peter Obi, distract it from its focus on governance.

Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Ononuga, who stated this during an interview aired on Mic On Podcast, anchored by Seun Okinbaloye, also accused Obi of introducing a dangerous slant to the Nigerian politics by deploying religious and ethnic passions in his campaigns.

Followers of Obi, also known as the Obidients, have been known to be passionate and most times rude and abrasive, especially on various social media platforms, to other citizens not sharing their views and ideology. They have also been most antagonistic of the Tinubu administration.

However, reacting to a question on whether Obi’s politics and his followers, the Obidients, are capable of posing a threat to President Tinubu’s chances in 2027, Onanuga said the administration is currently very busy with governing Nigeria and has no time to entertain thoughts about 2027 politics for now.

“As of now, we are busy with governance and we don’t want our attention diverted from the focus of what the government is trying to do. We are very busy, we’re not even looking at them now”, he said.

Speaking about Obi’s political style at the last election, he said “what I know about the campaign of Obi was that for the first time in a very long while in our country, we had a candidate who was inflaming ethnic passion and that was the way the election went at that time, he was inflaming ethnic and religious passions, bringing two dangerous things to our politics; ethnicity and religion. That was what he did and those things were dangerous to our politics”.

Asked if he believed there are those who are out to intentionally sabotage the Tinubu administration, the Presidential Spokesman said “of course, it is very clear unless people are not perceptive. Up till now, some are still writing that Bola Tinubu stole the presidency and some people are saying that the man who came third actually won the election, and they are very unapologetic about that.

“How could somebody who came third how could he have won that election? You can even see when they were talking about the naira, some people were just happy that the Naira was going downhill. You can trace them. People who are saying so are members of the Obidient movement”, he asserted.

He debunked the belief in some quarters that President Tinubu also employed religious tactics, especially in his choice of a deputy, noting that the choice of Vice President Shettima was basically because of other qualities he is endowed with and not his religious persuasion.

He said: “If Asiwaju did that, he wouldn’t have lost Lagos”.

He said the Muslim/Muslim ticket of the APC at the polls “was not religious. You could see that the Muslim/Muslim ticket did not win him massive votes, let’s say in Borno, where his deputy came from. For the man he picked as his VP, he believe that Shettima has the qualities to be his vice president and that’s why he picked him, he was not looking at religion.

“Let me give you an incident. We went somewhere recently and we found out that most of the people in the media section of this government are actually Muslims. I was born a Muslim, but it was mere coincidence, when they were picking them, nobody was looking at their religion. Ditto,

“When President Tinubu was picking Shettima as his vice, he was picking Shettima, he was not looking at him as a Muslim. He was looking at Shettima, from the Northeast part of the country, who can add some values to his campaign, to his winning the Presidency.

“Shettima earned the vice presidency because of his contributions to that campaign, he was with him all the way, even before the primary. When you want to appoint someone to work with you, you have to count loyalty, it’s very vital. Even the quality of the person is also very important and you can see what Shettima has been doing; he’s loyal to the President and he has shown a lot of qualities as Vice President”, he said.

Asked to compare President Tinubu with his predecessor, former President Muhammadu Buhari, Onanuga said it would be too early to be drawing conclusions on performances as President Tinubu is barely a year in the saddle.

He also pointed out that the two leaders have their human differences and different ways of attending to issues, but noted that former President Buhari had been unfairly judged by many commentators, saying he tried his best for the country, especially in the area of infrastructure development and the enrichment of the legal system.

Senator Ningi’s claim on 2024 budget false, misleading, says Presidency

Presidency has reacted to the claim made by Senator Abdul Ningi, representing Bauchi Central that President Bola Tinubu-led federal government is operating two versions of the 2024 budget.

Senator Ningi, acting under the banner of the Northern Senators’ Forum claimed during an interview with the BBC Hausa Service that the National Assembly discussed and approved a budget of N25 trillion for 2024, instead of the N28.7 Trillion that is being implemented by the federal government

In a statement issued on Sunday, March 10, the special adviser to the president on information & strategy, Bayo Onanuga, described the claim as false and misleading.

He said: “Following the false claims made by Senator Abdul Ningi, representing Bauchi Central that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu-led federal government is operating two versions of the 2024 budget, we consider it appropriate to inform Nigerians that there is no truth whatsoever in the allegation.

“Acting under the banner of the Northern Senators’ Forum, Senator Ningi, falsely claimed in an interview he granted BBC Hausa Service, that the National Assembly debated and passed N25 Trillion as the 2024 budget and not the N28.7 Trillion that is being implemented by the federal government.

“To begin with, President Tinubu on November 29, 2023 presented a budget of N27.5 Trillion to the joint session of the National Assembly made up of N9.92 Trillion recurrent expenditure, Debt Service N8.25 Trillion and Capital Expenditure of N8.7 Trillion.

“This was widely reported. He did not present a budget of N25 Trillion. Contrary to the strange view expressed by Senator Ningi, there was no way the Senate could have debated and passed a N25 Trillion budget that was not presented to the National Assembly.

“We don’t expect a ranking Senator not to pay due attention to details before making wild claims. It is also important to let Nigerians know that the budget that President Tinubu signed into law on January 1, 2024, as passed by the National Assembly was N28.7 Trillion.

“The National Assembly, in its wisdom, increased the amount proposed by the Executive by N1.2 Trillion.

“In the spirit of democracy which allows give and take, President Tinubu didn’t withhold his assent to the Appropriation Bill as passed by the National Assembly. We want to stress that if the budget figure was increased and made to be different from what the Executive proposed, it was the National Assembly that jacked it up in the exercise of its power of appropriation.”

On the uncharitable claim that the 2024 budget was anti-North, he noted, “We found such a position as canvassed by Senator Ningi as too far-fetched and unbecoming of a leader of his status.”

He said President Tinubu is leading a government that is fair and equitable to every part and segment of Nigeria. In terms of funding, distribution of capital and priority projects, the 2024 Appropriation Act was not skewed against any section of the country.

According to him, the North as an integral part of the country was well covered in all areas, from security to agriculture, healthcare to education, and other important infrastructure such as roads, rail, dams, power and irrigation projects to support all year-round agriculture.

He said: “It is concerning that a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria can employ such primordial antics to fuel divisive rhetoric at a time well-meaning Nigerians are joining hands with President Tinubu to raise the spirit of national cohesion, unity and inclusive politics.

“We want to use this opportunity to commend Senator Yemi Adaramodu, Chairman Senate Committee on Media and Publicity for setting the record straight. We also commend Senators Steve Sunday Karimi (Kogi), Titus Tartenger Zam (Benue) and Kaka Sheu (Borno) for their forthrightness and for coming out against the misrepresentation of facts by Senator Ningi.”

He stated that the president is a firm believer in the rule of law and constitutional democracy, saying,“As an avowed democrat, he will not engage and indulge in any unconstitutional action or act in any manner that assaults the Constitution of Nigeria by operating any budget outside the one approved by the National Assembly, which he dutifully signed into law.

“We want to state categorically that the only 2024 budget that is being implemented is the N28.7 Trillion budget passed by the National Assembly and signed by the president. Included in the budget are statutory transfers to the Judiciary, National Assembly, Tetfund and others.”

Tinubu addressing challenges arising from reforms – Onanuga

Nigerians should expect better days in 2024 when some  of the decisions taken by the Bola Tinubu Administration will have started yielding positive dividends, the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, said yesterday.

Tinubu, according to him,is focussed on turning the economy round for growth, development and prosperity.

Onanuga, in a statement entitled “The many silver linings of Tinubu’s 7 months in office” said: “we expect the silver linings, that are at present understated, to blossom into rays of sunshine to be experienced by all Nigerians.”

The statement: “The removal of fuel subsidy and the move to merge foreign exchange rates, two headline reforms introduced by the Tinubu administration since late May, triggered problems such as high fuel prices and the depreciation of the Naira, two monstrosities which combined  to cause a general spike in costs of services and goods.

“Today, many Nigerians complain of a rise in the cost of living.

“According to the latest NBS report, Nigeria’s inflation, which rose to 26.7 percent in September, again rose to 28.2% in November from 27.33% in October. Food Inflation remains untamed, rising from 31.52% in October to 32.84% in November 2023.

“To compound the economic problems, few multinational companies such as GlaxoSmithKline, Procter & Gamble have announced their exit from our country, complaining about the difficult operating environment and the scarcity of dollar.

“The truth is that the new policies alone are not solely responsible for the economic problems we are facing today. We were destined for the tough and rough patch, where we are today because of the prevailing conditions before Tinubu took over on 29 May.

“As at June 2023, budget deficit was N10.8 trillion. Actual Debt service was 98.95 percent of revenue, far higher than the projected 59.37 percent.  Inflow into the country’s foreign reserve came in trickles. And so bad was the state of affairs that Nigeria could not remit about $800 million fund of foreign airlines. JP Morgan exposed our near insolvency by claiming in a report that our net foreign reserve was just about $3.7 billion, not the $33 billion plus  flaunted by Emefiele’s  CBN.

“President Tinubu, who promised during the campaign to take hard and difficult decisions, moved to tackle the economic problems from Day One, by first dispensing with the wasteful fuel subsidy that was billed to consume about N7trillion this year, five times more than what was provisioned for capital spending.

“President Tinubu is quite aware of the side effects of his move to reset our economy. Though his administration  has earned plaudits from the World Bank, the IMF and rating agencies such as Moody’s and Fitch, he is not carried away by the praises.

“The moves are yielding some good effects. Amidst what some sections of the media perceive as general gloom, some silver linings are emerging, signposting that with a little more patience, our material conditions will improve and inflation will be tamed. For businesses, operating conditions will also improve.

“In its third quarter report for the year, the NBS reported that GDP grew by 2.54percent. In a similar period in 2022, GDP recorded a growth of 2.25%. To demonstrate that the sun may be shining on us again, the 2.54% GDP growth recorded in Q3, was also higher than the 2.51% recorded in Q2.

“The service sector, made up of information and communication, financial and insurance,  was responsible for the growth witnessed in Q3. It had a 3.99% growth, contributing 52.7% of the aggregate GDP. The agriculture sector declined from 1.34% growth in Q2 to 1.3percent in Q3.

“Growth was also recorded in construction and real estate, metal ores(69.76%), coal mining(58.03%), chemical and pharmaceutical products(6.77%), Cement(4.2%)  and construction(3.89%). Oil reported a negative growth of 0.85%, a major improvement to the negative 22.67% recorded at the same period last year. It was -13.43 in Q2 of 2022. The improvement in the oil sector and its contribution to GDP has been attributed to the improvement in the security of oil infrastructure and operations, leading to increased production. Going forward in this Q4 and 2024, the NNPC Limited is confident that the sector will continue to climb the curve.

“In the same Q3, according to NBS, the Industrial sector  grew by 0.46%, an uptick compared with Q3  2022, when it had a negative 8% growth, even in the era of P&G and GSK exit.

“An interesting revelation in the NBS Q3 report was the big jump in the volume of trade, from N12.16 trillion in Q2  to N18.8 trillion. Trade volume in the same period in 2022 was N12.28 trillion. We also recorded a trade surplus of N1.89trillion in Q3, an increase from the N708.8 billion in Q2 2023. In Q3 in 2022, we recorded trade deficit of N409.39 billion.

“Value of exports in the third quarter was N10.35 trillion, far higher by 60.78 percent than the N6.44 trillion posted in Q2 2023. Crude oil dominated the export, accounting for 82.5 percent, a confirmation that our country is pumping out more oil for export unlike the previous years.

“Just as our exports increased, imports also increased, rising from N5.73 trillion in Q2 2023 to N8.46 trillion in Q3, a rise of 60.8 percent. The imports recorded in the quarter was also higher in value compared to Q3 2022, which was N6.34 trillion.

“As the Minister of Budget and National Planning, Atiku Bagudu noted in a recent report, economic prosperity in our country will be achieved with the reforms being implemented, supported by strong monetary and fiscal policies, food supply management and other intervention programmes.

“President Tinubu who has never shied away from acknowledging the temporary pains triggered by the reforms, gave an assurance in a recent newspaper interview that his Administration will continue to take proactive measures to wrestle with the problems. Many of these measures are already being taken and in the New Year, we expect the silver linings, that are at present understated, to blossom into rays of sunshine to be experienced by all Nigerians.”

In a statement issued on Thursday, November 2, Onanuga said that what was named as Presidential Yacht in the budget is an Operational Naval boat with specialized security gadgets suitable for high-profile operational inspection and not for the use of the President.

He said: “First, we need to make clear that President Bola Tinubu’s administration respects the views of Nigerians on all matters of public concern. We thus consider it imperative to clear any misconception and misunderstanding of the issues.

“What was named as Presidential Yacht in the budget is an Operational Naval boat with specialized security gadgets suitable for high-profile operational inspection and not for the use of the President. It is called a presidential yacht by way of nomenclature because of its high-level security features.

“The Naval boat was ordered by the navy under the previous administration. President Tinubu has consistently said that government is a continuum as he inherited both assets and liabilities of past administrations.

“The payment request for the boat was part of the committed obligation submitted by the office of the Chief of Naval Staff to the Ministry of Defence. The total of the submitted requests was in excess of N200 billion out of which N62 billion was approved by the President.

“President Tinubu is focused on securing our country and territorial waters. The Federal Government under his leadership is investing more resources to enhance greater economic output from our oil and gas, marine, and blue economy.

“In President Tinubu, we have a leader who understands the economic challenges being faced by the masses. His administration is working very hard to confront and surmount those challenges. Nigerians will soon get the benefits of the ongoing reforms that will certainly lead to a buoyant and improved quality of life for all citizens.”
