AFCON 2017 FALLOUT: Onazi roots for new Eagles coach

    • Mum over retaining Siasia
    • Ready to play for Nigeria anytime

Lazio FC of Italy’s midfielder, Oguenyi Onazi has stated categorically that Nigeria’s senior football team, the Super Eagles needs a new coach with the right technical savvy to mould the immensely talented players available into an invincible squad for the country.

Onazi drew a parrallel between Nigeria’s Super Eagles and the current Barclays English Premier League leaders, Leicester FC of England when he revealed that the English side had ordinary players who last season barely escaped relegation stressing that: “Look at what the presence of a competent coach Claudio Raneri has done with those players at Leicester under one year.

“Compare what Raneri has done with the average players he has moulded into good players with the Super Eagles that is filled with immensely talented players but who cannot qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations. Well, it is not my duty to say this but I feel deeply pained that Nigeria won’t be at the Africa Cup of Nations given the calibre of players available to the country.”

Asked repeatedly on a Silverbird/The Nation’s television show’s exclsuive interview on Friday if he still wanted Samson Siasia to remain as the chief coach of the team, Onazi was evasive and did not say yes to the question, insisting that it wasn’t his duty to determine that pointing out that: “I’m ready to give my 120 per cent for Nigeria anytime I’m invited to play for the country, irrespective of who the coach is.”

•hails Etebo, Iwobi as the future of Nigerian football

Super Eagles midfielder, Ogenyi Onazi has declared that the 2017 African Cup of Nations qualifying match against Egypt in Alexandria is a must win.

The former youth international missed Nigeria’s 1-1 draw against the Pharaohs due to suspension but will return for the Tuesday tie as the Samson Siasia led side bid to qualify for the tournament after missing out on Equatorial Guinea 2015.

“It is definitely a must win game,’ Onazi told to SportingLife. ‘We played well at home and want to win the return leg in Alexandria and have asked God for his grace.

“Honestly, we want to do our talking on the pitch and 90 minutes will determine.’

The Lazio midfielder then talked up the talents of Oghenekaro Etebo and Alex Iwobi who snubbed England to make his Super Eagles debut against the Pharaohs hailing them as the future of Nigerian football.

“Etebo and Iwobi are the future of our football and we will do our best to help them get better,” he said.

“Everyone in the team is doing really great, thanks to the many talents we have in Nigeria and together we will fight hard to achieve greatness for our dear country.”

The 23-year-old also praised the growth of the domestic game and revealed that he watches the local league more since he returned to the country on international duties.

‘I really want to say a big thank you to the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) and the League Management Company (LMC) for transforming the domestic game. President Amaju Pinnick and Shehu Diko have done tremendously well in putting things in place and God will reward them,”he said.

Former Super eagles coach Sunday Oliseh is expected to give his own version to why he suddenly quit his post with just a month to the crucial AFCON qualifiers against Egypt.

“Sports Minister Solomon Dalung has insisted he be part of the committee’s hearing and so he will be in attendance on Thursday,” a sports ministry official informed.

The sports minister ordered Oliseh not to be sacked when Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) president Amaju Pinnick presented a recommendation of the technical committee that the coach be fired.

The NFF have maintained this briefing is a major distraction as the Super Eagles are preparing for must-win AFCON qualifiers against Egypt.

Gabon 2017 qualifier: Nigeria vs Egypt – Eagles can handle Salah – Onazi

•Says midfield partnership with Mikel is solid enough

Lazio midfielder, Ogenyi Onazi is confident that the Super Eagles can handle Egyptian star man, Mohammed Salah and his Pharaohs teammates when both sides clash in the 2017 African Cup of Nations qualifier later this month.

Salah has been in a very rich vein of form since his return from injury and at the weekend inspired Roma to a comprehensive 4-1 win over Fiorentina with a brilliant brace to hand new manager, Luciano Spalletti a seven game unbeaten run.

Salah will lead the Egyptians to Nigeria for the first leg of the double-header clash in Kaduna on March 25 before hosting the Samson Siasia led side in Alexandria on the 29th. Onazi understands the challenge that confronts the Eagles and he is ready to help put smiles on the faces of Nigerians.

‘We know Mohammed Salah very well and can handle him,’ the 23-year-old revealed to SportingLife. ‘The Egyptians have other good players like Bassem Morsi who scored a hat-trick against Chad and the Arsenal guy, Mohamed El Nenny but we’ll be ready for them.

‘Personally, I’m 100% fit and have been training very well and can’t wait to put on the colours of Nigeria.’

Onazi, who was included in the 43-man squad to play Egypt by interim manager Samson Siasia alongside Chelsea vice-captain Mikel Obi, is delighted with his midfield partnership with the former Lyn Oslo star.

‘Mikel is a natural leader and I enjoy playing alongside him – hopefully together we can keep the midfield solid and make it difficult for the Egyptians to score,’ he added.

Nigeria trail Egypt by two points in Group G after beating Chad 2-0 and drawing goalless against Tanzania.

Lazio: Onazi can only go for N1.5bn

ACCORDING to a report on Calciomercato.it, in Italy,  Italia Serie A club side, SS Lazio management has lowered the asking price for Super Eagles vice captain, Ogenyi Onazi to just €7M (£5.3M) (about 1.5bn).

Recall the Biancocelesti President, Claudio Lotito had insisted that 8 million Euros was the price tag for the Nigerian after German Bundesliga side, Werder Bremen had their 700, 000 euros bid rejected.

The development forced Bremen’s Sporting Director, Thomas Eichin to say on Fussballtransfers.com: “I know the player, but in January there are many alternatives.”

With the new price tag, English Premier League trio of Everton, Newcastle and Swansea who are all monitoring the market, could sign the 23-year-old who’s unhappy with his lack of playing time as the January transfer window draws to close.

Meanwhile, Lazio will look to Malaga’s Fernando Tissone as a replacement if Onazi is sold, say reports.

Gazzetta dello Sport wrote on Wednesday that former Sampdoria, Udinese and Atalanta midfielder Tissone is the Biancocelesti’s first choice reinforcement if Onazi leaves.

The newspaper believes that Tissone wants to return to Italy, but reports that Atalanta are interested in bringing him back to Bergamo.

  • ONAZI ‘Music was my first love’

ONAZI ‘Music was my first love’

HE maybe in his 20s, Ogenyi Onazi is yet regarded as one of the most eligible bachelors within the rank and file of the Super Eagles.

Urbane and full of life, the Lazio’s Nigerian midfielder said clearly that he has many years ahead of him and won’t be settling down just yet because there are many more rivers to cross. Onazi practically roared into a hearty laughter  when  told his adoring Nigerian fans  are looking forward  to his marriage.

“Hahhahhahahaha ahhhh; Nigerians (expecting my marriage?). They should come and contribute money for my wedding,” Onazi responded to an email questionnaire. “But my fiancée is just there, and they will know her when the time comes

“She is special because I met her five years ago when I started my journey and when I never knew who I was going to be, the rest of the story to be continued like Nigerian movie………. hahahahahh.”

Onazi said he remained grateful despite the fact that life has been ups and downs in recent times:

“Obviously it (Super Eagles’ non qualification for the 2015 African Cup of Nations) affected me so much because I already planned my season with a different approach because if we had gone for the African Cup of Nations, so many things would have changed but I still give thanks to the Almighty God.

“Yes, all thanks to God for his mercy and favour.  Well, I have always had good moment this season because I have been playing and doing very well any time I get to play.

“Playing football is a big moment for me because the grace of God is always there for me. And the moment I don’t want to remember is anytime we lose a game; I’m also mad inside of me.”

They say you do as the Roman when you are in Rome and the 2013 AFCON winner with the Super Eagles reckons he is having a swell time at Lazio:  “Our strength (as a team at Lazio) is so many that I don’t know where to start from.

“First, we are a team with tactical mentality and the coach has put in the team a winning mentality, also I will say one of the team’s strong points is all working together  pressing, attacking together and defending together.

“Of course, playing in Rome is special to players because we have a very good and conducive weather condition and Rome is a very beautiful city; and the fans sometimes make it enjoyable but not when things are going bad,” he reasoned.

Onazi reportedly joined Lazio in 2011, alongside his teammate, Sani Emmanuel, after they both had trials in Italy following their impressive performances at the 2009 FIFA U-17 World Cup where the Golden Eaglets were losing finalist to Switzerland.

He was first promoted to the Lazio first team during the 201112 season after impressing at youth level and made his Serie A debut as a substitute in the penultimate match of the season when Lazio recorded a 2-0 victory over Atalanta. He has not looked back ever since and has regularly featured for the Rome-based side in Italy and Europe. Onazi scored his first goal for Lazio on March 7, 2013 in a 2-0 win against Stuttgart in the last sixteen of the Europa League and on May 8, 2013 scored his first Serie A goal in a 31 win over Inter Milan. On September 22, 2014 he  signed a two-year contract extension with the  Serie A club until 2018.

“My success secret is simply  the special grace of God with determination, hard work,  constant practice,  ready to learn from everybody and  love for my profession,” hinted Onazi, adding that the famous Roma derby between AS Roma and Lazio is the pick of the crop in the Italian Serie A.“Well, the Roman derby is always a very important game for me as well as our fans.

“It was even special when we won the derby in the Coppa Italia, but my pre match preparation is always the same thing whether for a derby or any other match; I always do what I do before starting the game as usual. I don’t need to do anything different because it’s a derby. I take my iPad listen to my gospel music which will feed me spiritually before stepping out on the field.”

Indeed, Onazi and music seem inseparable, following his disclosure in an earlier interview with The Nation Sport & Style, that he was a choir boy in his younger years while growing up in Jos.

“Sure, I would choose a career in football time and above music but both give me much pleasure,” he noted.  “Though they are two different things, football and music are things that make me happy.

“If I’m not playing football, music would have been an automatic choice. Being a professional footballer is like doing me a favour because this is something I enjoy doing naturally.

“I have the same feeling about music; it is something that I derive pleasure in. All my time in Jos, you either find me on the pitch playing football or I’m in the church playing music; so it was all part of my growing up.”

Onazi who helped the Super Eagles win the 2013 African Cup of Nations in South Africa has come a long way. He began playing football on the streets of Jos at a tender age but came to prominence when he joined My People FC of Lagos – a team founded by Pastor T.B Joshua of the Synagogue of All Nations. It was at the instance of the pastor, according to Onazi, that his love for music as a choirboy in Jos was rekindled:  “I was an instrumentalist in Jos long before I met Pastor T.B Joshua,” he emphasised. “Just like I play music, I can play football and I think those are two special talents God gave to me and I was really good at it.

“So when I met Pastor T.B Joshua, he encouraged me to be an instrumentalist in the church and I do play with the choir. Working in the church is a privilege for me to serve God.”

Growing up in the church equally helped Onazi to come to terms with the vagaries of life: “Of course, I was brought up by Pastor T.B Joshua and he taught me so many things, especially being less on ourselves and more on others; this is just my philosophy and principle of life,” he crooned.

It is this chastity and care for the less-privileged that has endeared Onazi, who described himself as ‘a gentleman without problem’, to many. Born on December 25 in 1992, he informed that every festive season at the end of the year is always an opportunity for him to touch base with the people.

“Well, every Christmas and new year are two special occasions for me because it’s a double celebration since the Christmas falls on my birthday too,” he said.“I’m going to buy lots of gifts for the less-privileged and those who are physically challenged, as well as the homeless; these are the people that I’m concerned about.”

    FROM THE ARCHIEVES

Onazi as a fashionista: Everybody has his own style. For instance, when you see Cristiano Ronaldo, he has this nice hair cut and several other players have their own styles. I don’t box myself into a particular style because when you see me on the street, you might not really know I’m the person. Of course, I love to dress good and nice but that does not mean I would go to the extreme because I want to look good or nice. It doesn’t matter what I wear; I can wear Louis Vuitton, Prada, Gucci … I can wear Salvatore Ferragamo, but it is not compulsory I put on designers stuff. I just decide to wear anything I can lay my hands to wear. Life is not measured by the number of designer wears you have, rather by the number of lives you can touch.

    • Says they should stay positive

Super Eagles’ Assistant Captain, Eddy Ogenyi Onazi has charged Nigerians to stay positive and be patient with the senior national team in the wake of the team’s 2-0 victory over the King’s Shield of Swaziland in the second leg of the Russia 2018 FIFA World Cup played in Port Harcourt yesterday.

Onazi told journalists during the post match press conference that negative reports of Nigerians after Eagles’ matches have a way of demoralising the team and that the nation should always stay positive and strive to assist the Eagles’ head coach, Sunday Oliseh in his bid to raise a young formidable team.

He said the Eagles are aware of their responsibilities and are very alert to it adding that the job of building a strong national team is for all Nigerians.

“I want to beg Nigerians to always stay positive and not be negative in their reactions and reports about the Eagles. Even though we don’t let that bother us, negative reports have a way of demoralising the team” Onazi counselled Nigerians.

The Eagles are through to the next round of the World Cup qualifier where they will be put in either of the five groups to be made shortly by CAF and where top teams of the five groups sail to the Russia 2018 World Cup.

Eddy Onazi took to social media to celebrate his goal for Lazio in their 3 – 2 victory over Saint-étienne on match day two in the Europa League on Thursday night.

In his 21st appearance in the competition, the combative midfielder was in action for 74 minutes before he was replaced after picking up a yellow card in the 25th minute.

The Nigeria international has dedicated his third goal since he first appeared in the Europa League to his countrymen, who are celebrating their 55th Independence anniversary.

“3 points in the bag with one goal for my beloved #NigeriaAt55. Thanks to our fans! #ForzaLazio #ASuperEagle” the Lazio number 23 tweeted.

Onazi will be hoping to feature in Lazio’s next game, against Frosinone on Sunday, before embarking on the 718 – mile journey to Belgium to link up with his international teammates for the friendlies against DRC and Cameroon.

  • Onazi backs Eagles to shine again

Lazio midfielder Ogenyi Onazi has told AfricanFootball.com the new Super Eagles under coach Sunday Oliseh will qualify for the 2017 AFCON.

Onazi has been recalled to the Super Eagles after he served a suspension due to the red card he received against Chad in an AFCON qualifier in June.

He said it is always a great moment when he plays for Nigeria and believes the new team under Oliseh will make Nigerians proud again.

“Playing for Nigeria is always special to me. We are building a young, new and dynamic team right now and it will be nice to use the two friendly games to build some sort of momentum. I’m confident we are on track to become a better team and qualify for AFCON 2017,” he told AfricanFootball.com

“We will work hard collectively as usual and pray harder to get our target which is the AFCON 2017 ticket so we can make our lovely and loyal fans proud of us, and be proud of ourselves.”

    Onazi eyes Bayer Leverkusen’s scalp

OGENYI Onazi hopes to see Lazio through to the group stages of the Champions League in today’s game at the Bay Arena.

For him, an opportunity to hit another milestone in his young career beckons on tonight when Lazio take on Bayer Leverkusen in the second leg play-off game to reach the lucrative group stages of the UEFA Champions League.

The Italians go into the game at the Bay Arena with a 1-0 head start from the first leg last week where Keita scored.

If they maintain their lead to win the encounter, it would be Onazi’s first foray into the main Champions League stage where they will come up against Europe’s best sides.

But it won’t be an easy game against the Germans who have taken maximum points in the Bundesliga’s opening two matches thus far.

“Well, we have done our home work and we expect a strong game [against Leverkusen],” Onazi told Goal. “But our hope is on God.

“And we will do our best to win the game because we want to play in the Champions League.”

The 22-year-old played 53 minutes in the first leg victory and hopes to take on a larger role with the Rome-based side in order to play on the bigger stage offered by the competition.

“Now at Lazio I have a lot of responsibility in the team but I’m up to the task,” he said.

“Playing in the Champions League is another experience for me in my career, another stage in my football career.”
