  • Onazi wants to repeat Coppa Italia success

Nigeria international Ogenyi Onazi has told AfricanFootball.com he wishes to repeat a Coppa Italia conquest this season.

Onazi first won the Coppa Italia with Lazio in the 2012/2013 season. He was therefore delighted to help Lazio beat AC Milan 1-0 to reach the semi-final of the cup competition on Tuesday and now he says he looks forward to winning the trophy again for the fans.

“I am happy with our progress in the Coppa Italia. Obviously, the Coppa Italia has had some sort of good fortune to us (Lazio) as a team in the recent past. We hope to get the trophy as a gift to our lovely fans, who have stood by us,” he told AfricanFootball.com.

“Ultimately, our goal is to go all out and do our best to get a good position on the league table at the end of the season.”

The Jos-born star was a Trojan for Lazio playing a man short as they edged past AC Milan 1-0 to reach the semi-final.

    Onazi may leave Lazio

Nigeria national teamer Eddy Onazi, 22,  is unhappy over his lack of first team opportunities at Lazio.

Lazio President Claudio Lotito recently stated that the central midfielder will not leave the club this month, even though he admitted there are offers for the player.

Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera writes that a departure from Lazio before the close of the transfer window remains a possibility.

So far this season, Eddy Onazi has made a paltry four starts for The Biancocelesti in the Serie A. The My People FC product has been at Lazio since 2011.

  • Onazi not for sale

    Onazi not for sale

Claudio Lotito, President of  Lazio, has issued a hands-off warning to Liverpool over their reported interest in midfield enforcer Eddy Onazi.

The English Premier League side are known to be long – time admirers of the Super Eagles star and it is assumed that they revived their interest in the winter transfer market after failing to sign him last summer.

It had been claimed that Liverpool hoped to clinch the youngster’s signature by offering striker Fabio Borini in part – exchange.

But The Biancocelesti supremo expects Eddy Onazi to remain at the club after the close of the January transfer window.

”Onazi is not for sale and I have received offers”Claudio Lotito told mediasetpremium.it.

”Reinforcement in attack? We’ll see, we have different loan players: I will talk with the coach and we will see what the market offers.”

Having extended his Lazio contract last September, Eddy Onazi is now tied to the club until 2018.

The 22-year-old has appeared in 10 Serie A matches so far this season.

  • Onazi could still dump Lazio

    Onazi could still dump Lazio

Nigeria international Ogenyi Onazi could still dump his Italian Serie A team Lazio in this winter transfer window, a close confidant of the player has told AfricanFootball.com.

A bid by Liverpool for Onazi has reportedly been rejected by Lazio, who have extended the contract of the Nigeria midfield star.

However, the hard running midfielder has continued to attract interest from several clubs and his destination may well be the English Premier League, where several clubs have been linked with him.

“Onazi is doing well with Lazio. There is a lot of talk about him moving, that is still possible this January but nothing is certain yet. He has offers from many teams in England which include Liverpool, West ham United, Newcastle United, QPR, Southampton and Swansea,” said the close source.

“Germany’s Borrusia Monchengladbach and Galatasaray of Turkey also want him. We can’t pre-empt anything now, you can’t say never in football until it has happened or not.”

    Onazi apologises to fans

SS Lazio and Eagles midfielder, Eddy Onazi has once again apologise to fans of the Super Eagles in the aftermath of the team’s failure to qualify for next year’s AFCON in Equatorial Guinea, while also thanking them for theirsupport.

In a chat with www.footballlive.ng Onazi asked the fans to stay with the team as they prepare to retun stronger for future engagements including the World Cup qualifiers.

” We are really sorry for how things turned out but we appreciate their support and ask for the country to back the preparation for future competitions including the World Cup qualifiers and more AFCON nation cups to participate in,” Onazi offered.

  • Onazi dismisses racism fears

    Onazi dismisses racism fears

Nigeria international midfielder Ogenyi Onazi says he has never been racially abused in Italy.

Italy has been in the centre of a number of racist incidents recently in world football with footballers of African descent usually targeted for attack.

Ghanaian midfielder Kevin Prince Boateng famously walked off the pitch after he was abused by racists in the 26th minute of AC Milan’s friendly against fourth division club Pro Patria in January 2013.

Onazi, however, says he has never faced an unpleasant situation with racists since he joined Serie A club SS Lazio in 2012.

“I will be lying if I said I am not aware of racism or racists in Italy but I have never been racially abused since I started playing here,” Onazi told supersport.com.

The midfielder has recently been struggling to nail down a spot in the Lazio first team, making just seven league appearances this season.

He identified a combination of factors as being responsible for his limited number of minutes this term.

“We have a new coach at Lazio. Apart from that, things have been a bit complicated because I was injured recently.

“Then, when you play for your national team, it’s usually a bit hard to return straight to action because there are others who will be there training with the club while you are away,” he said.

Onazi has been capped 21 times by Nigeria at senior level.

  • Onazi blamed for Afcon failure

    Onazi blamed for Afcon failure

Lazio midfielder Ogenyi Onazi has been faulted as part of the reason Nigeria failed to qualify for next year’s Africa Cup of Nations in Equatorial Guinea.

A Super Eagles player told SL10.ng on the condition of anonymity, that the Lazio man ignored instructions to shield the defence in search of personal glory.

“A lot have been said about why we failed to qualify, but most are far from the truth. For instance why was it that we struggle less when Hope Akpan plays in front of the defence?” said the source.

“It’s ironic that Mikel Obi best games of the qualifiers were games that Akpan played in as he sits and allow Obi roam upfront without leaving any space behind unlike Onazi.

“Nigerians should also ask him why he missed training the eve of the game and tried to lie. What family issue kept him out?”

The player pointed out that Onazi ignored the coach’s instruction as he felt slighted that Mikel took all the glory after the Nigeria AFCON 2013 triumph.

“His relationship with Mikel is zero, Keshi noticed it during preparations for the World Cup, he now wants to score goals as opposed to his primary role,” added the anonymous player.

“He felt Mikel got a lot of plaudits while he was ignored despite playing a role in his success at the AFCON 2013, he cost us the game against South Africa.”

Both players had a public fallout in front of the camera on the pitch in the Eagles 2-0 away win against Congo in Pointe Noire, a situation our source said snowballed into the South Africa game.

“Mikel is a senior player in the team and highly experienced and for Onazi to openly challenge him shows you how bad it is between them,” continued the source.

“Onazi is playing under instructions to cover for Obi who is short of pace on the counter, but look at both South Africa goals, where was he?

“These days he plays for himself more than the team, you can see how he hits shots waywardly even when a pass is a better option, he has to grow up.”

  • Onazi grateful to God for Congo win

Onazi grateful to God for Congo win

Lazio midfielder Eddy Onazi has gone on social media to thank the Supreme Being and supporters who showed solidarity with the Super Eagles before the African Cup of Nations qualifier against Congo.

Now, the defending champions need a slim victory against Group A winners South Africa in Uyo on Wednesday to book their ticket to Equatorial Guinea, after they defeated the Red Devils 2 – 0 on Saturday.

“Lord thank you for the victory today, we look up to you for the next game. Thanks to every one who prayed for the team. Great fight guys,” said Eddy Onazi on Twitter.

Eddy Onazi has been involved in every single game contested by the Super Eagles at African Cup of Nations qualifying.

The Super Eagles returned to Uyo, venue of the clash against South Africa, early on Sunday morning.

Onazi set for first Lazio game of season

Speaking at a press conference ahead of the Serie A clash against Udinese today, Lazio coach Stefano Pioli has dropped a strong hint that Eddy Onazi is in line to play his first game for the club in the ongoing season.

Despite not being 100 percent fit, the central midfielder was patched up for the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers with Congo and South Africa.

But at club level, the Nigeria international has only made the substitutes bench on two occasions – against Genoa and Cesena – without tasting action.

“Onazi may also be available almost 100%. He came from the World Cup with an injury and has not played much with us.

“He’s getting in the mechanisms of the team and I think he’s ready to play with his qualities,” said Setafano Pioli.

Eddy Onazi made 29 appearances in the Serie A last term, including 19 starts, while he clocked up 15 appearances in the 2012 – 2013 campaign.

  • AFCON QUALIFIERS: Eagles won’t gamble with Sudan, says Onazi

AFCON QUALIFIERS: Eagles won’t gamble with Sudan, says Onazi

Super Eagles and SS Lazio midfielder Ogenyi Onazi sees next month’s 2015 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Sudan away from home as the most important game for the national team.

After the disappointing start to what would be the defense of the 2013 title Nigeria won in South Africa, Onazi reckons that the reigning African champions need a win at all cost and cannot afford to gamble with the match.

“This game is the most important game to us and what we just need is a win and not gamble with it.

“We certainly will make sure that we do our best and make sure that we win and get the three points.”
