The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Wednesday, November 20, presented certificates of return to Ondo state governor-elect, Lucky Aiyedatiwa and his Deputy at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja.
Aiyedatiwa won the November 16 governorship election in Ondo state, defeating 17 other candidates.
The certificate was presented to the governor and his deputy by the National Commissioner supervising Ondo state, Prof Kunle Ajayi.
Speaking after receiving the certificate, the governor elect said the presentation marked the end of a political journey that started few months ago with the release of the electoral timetable by INEC and the conduct of party primaries.
He thanked the people if the state for the confidence reposed in him and for coming out to exercise their franchise and renewing his mandate.
He said: “The mandate you have just renewed via your huge votes across the 18 LGAs where we won convincingly has placed a burden on me to serve you better than I did before now.”
He also thanked President Bola Tinubu, whom he said provided a level playing field for all parties.
While he thanked other stakeholders for their commitment to the electoral process, Aiyedatiwa praised INEC for “conducting a free, fair, transparent, credible, and inclusive election.”
National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje led some members of the party’s National Working Committee to the event which also had in attendance, Ogun state governor, Dapo Abiodun and members of the National Assembly from Ondo state.
The candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in last Saturday’s governorship election, Hon Agboola Ajayi, has rejected the results of the election.
Ajayi said he would head to the tribunal to seek justice.
The former Deputy Governor said he kept silent since results of the election were announced to enable him investigate what he termed ‘contents of criminality prosecuted by both APC and the INEC.’
Ajayi said the investigation uncovered lots of actions undertaken to compromise the electoral desires of the people.
Speaking in a statement by his Special Adviser, Ayo Fadaka, Ajayi said democracy could not thrive in an environment where unabated criminality was perpetrated in the prosecution of an election by INEC.
He said elections conducted by INEC since the APC assumed power in 2015 has continued in the tradition of hijacking the process and delivering results that were diametrically in contrast with expressed electoral desires.
According to him: “While not divulging the nature and extent of the results of our investigations for now, our only prayer is that those who possess the privileges to determine the fate of people and nation should begin to live up to expectations and fear God, in the interest of our nation, it’s wellness, peace and tranquility, else they be reduced to same level of criminals and bandits who continuously lay landmines that undermine the progress of our nation.
“We particularly call on the Judiciary to brace up and perform the sacred and onerous responsibilities to guarantee the portability of justice to people and institutions that seek it, the nation and people will appreciate that.
“In summary, we reject the results of the Nov 16th election and will take legal actions to reverse the debauchery, that is the option available to us and we are hopeful that man and God who is the ultimate will give us justice. It is time we begin to eschew criminality from our electoral process.”
Governorship candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Prince Adeyemi Nejo, has accepted the outcome of last Saturday’s governorship election in Ondo state.
Prince Nejo, who came a distant third at the poll, said he reviewed the conduct of the election and accepted that it was peaceful.
Nejo congratulated Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa for emerging victorious at the polls.
He said the election was not free of certain imperfections and pockets of challenges characteristic of any electoral process anywhere in the world.
Prince Nejo said the election was conducted in substantial compliance with the provisions of the Electoral Act, 2022.
He said: “Furthermore, and considering the towering imperative to prioritise the interest of the people of Ondo State over personal individual interest or ambition, I have in consultation with my supporters and party leaders and faithful, resolved to felicitate with the winner of the election, Hon. Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, to wish him well and share in the joy of his victory.
“While we continue, as a candidate and as a party, to play our role as a viable opposition by holding the State Government under the leadership of Gov. Aiyedatiwa accountable for policies and actions taken in government, we wish him resounding success in office as he continues to govern the State till February 2025 when he shall take the oath of office to preside over the affairs of the State for another four years.”
Also, the lawmaker representing Akoko South/East and South/West Federal Constituency, Asiwaju Adegboyega Adefarati, called on the people to put politics aside and support Governor Aiyedatiwa
Hon Adefarati, who congratulated Aiyedatiwa on his electoral victory, hailed the people for reposing their trust in the Governor’s leadership to steer the state towards greater prosperity for another four years.
Adefarati said the election was an affirmation of the Governor’s unwavering commitment to the development and well-being of the people.
He said: “Your Excellency, your re-election is a clear demonstration of the confidence Ondo State citizens have in your ability to deliver. It reflects their satisfaction with the progress recorded under your administration and their hope for even greater accomplishments in the years ahead.
“I assure you of my continued partnership to foster growth and address the needs of the people across all sectors. The collaborative efforts between the state and federal governments to ensure that dividends of democracy trickle down to all in Ondo State.”
Adefarati who called on all stakeholders, irrespective of political affiliations, to rally around the Governor to ensure the success of his administration, said only united and collective efforts were pivotal to building a prosperous and inclusive Ondo State.
“Let us put politics aside and focus on advancing the interests of our state. Together, we can achieve the Ondo State of our dreams,” he added.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of the All Progressives Congress (APC) on his victory in the Ondo state governorship election held on Saturday.
The president also commended the peaceful and orderly conduct of the election, praising the maturity displayed by all political actors throughout the process.
In a statement issued by his special adviser on information and strategy, Bayo Onanuga, on Sunday, President Tinubu lauded the 17 political parties and their candidates for their sense of purpose during the campaigns and the election, attributing the success of the exercise to the civility demonstrated by the people of Ondo State.
He encouraged all political stakeholders to ensure that this spirit of orderliness continues in post-election activities.
President Tinubu described the election as a “litmus test” for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), commending the electoral body for its early preparation, efficient deployment of staff and materials, and the swift handling of the process.
He specifically praised INEC for successfully uploading over 98% of results on Election Day, which he said reinforced public confidence in the institution.
He also extended his appreciation to security agencies, including the Nigerian Police Force, National Civil Defence Corps, Federal Road Safety Corps, National Youth Service Corps, and the military, for their professionalism in maintaining peace and order during the elections.
For candidates dissatisfied with the election outcome, the President urged them to utilize the judicial system to seek redress, emphasizing the importance of adhering to democratic principles.
Returning Officer of INEC and Vice Chancellor of Federal University, Lokoja, Prof. Akinwumi Olayemi Durotimi, who declared Aiyedatiwa winner of the poll said he polled the highest number of votes cast.
Prof. Akinwumi said Aiyedatiwa met all the constitutional requirements and declared him Governor-elect.
The victory of Aiyedatiwa was expected but it was the margin of defeat that was in contention.
Aiyedatiwa is the first Governor in the state to serve as Deputy Governor, Acting Governor, and an elected Governor. His fresh mandate will begin in February next year.
What made the victory of Aiyedatiwa easy and smooth was the refusal of many chieftains of the PDP to support his candidacy. Those who refused to support Ajayi said it was payback time for him to leave the party.
Ondo State Governor, Mr. Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has been declared winner in 13 out of 18 local government areas.
Aiyedatiwa won in Ifedore, Akoko Northwest, Akoko Northeast, Owo, Ose, Akoko Southeast, Akoko Southwest, Idanre, Ile-Oluji/Okeigbo, Ondo East, Ondo West and Irele.
He is leading with a wide margin.

Speaking shortly after casting his vote, Agboola expressed displeasure over the conduct of the excercise, alleging gross irregularities in the ongoing governorship poll.
He accused the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the security agencies of compromising the election in favour of the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Agboola said that the preliminary report from across the 16 local government areas has shown the election so far was far below the standard, asking the INEC chairman, Mahmood Yakubu to resign for conducting the most corrupt election in Nigeria’s political history.
He described the exercise as not only a sham but also synchronised attempt to murder democratic process, alleging that the stronghold of PDP chieftains were militarised to intimidate the voters from exercising their franchise.
He said: “If INEC cannot successfully organize election in just one state, then you must know that we are running into anarchy in Nigeria.
“I have been getting reports across the state and it is same, including me , I am a victim here in my unit and I want to say it is deliberate on the part of the REC and the INEC and don’t forget we have said earlier that we don’t trust Mrs Oluwatoyin Babalola who is the REC ; she can’t be fair.
“The system is compromised and there are complaints everywhere in the state including vote-buying , BVAS not working and don’t forget the machine is a rigging tools for them. It is a very shameful exercise and I think Nigerians should just call on INEC chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, if he can’t do the job, he should honorably resign because the system is totally compromised, this is sad.
“Under Professor Attahiru Jega as INEC chairman, our electoral process was getting to that international standard but Professor Yakubu has drawn us back , this is sad and Nigerians are not happy.”
On the security situation, the PDP candidate said: ” From my community here it is peaceful but accused the military operatives deployment more men to his area and I would take it up with the brigade commander. They can’t be intimidating the voters. How do you station seven to 10 armed soldiers; we are not at war here !
“On the voters turn out, despite the intimidation, people were willing to vote because they are frustrated already with things in the state and the country.”
He expressed displeasure over the delay he experienced before he could vote due to BVAS malfunction, saying ” The system is not perfect, things are not working and it took more than 10 minutes before the BVAS could accredit me”.

INEC begins distribution of sensitive materials for Ondo poll
By Osagie Otabor, Akure
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has begun distribution of sensitive materials to the 18 local government areas.
Stakeholders from security agencies, political parties representatives and Civil Society Organizations were at the Akure branch of the Central Bank of Nigeria(CBN) to monitor the distribution.
The materials were first inspected to ensure they were not tampered with before being distributed.
Two first-class traditional rulers in the Akoko area of Ondo State have commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies for their conduct in the ongoing governorship election in the state.
The two kings also urged political parties and their supporters to see the outcome of the election as a will of God and accept the outcome when it is finally announced by the electoral body.
Speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in his palace at Ikare, Oba Adeleke Adedoyin, Owa-Ale of Ikare-Akoko, said the people of Ondo state, as peace lovers, must shun any form of violence that could arise from the poll.
According to him, the election has been peaceful, so far, and people are casting their votes without any issue.
“Election should not be a do or die affair. No matter what, it is, just one person will be declared winner.
“I will advise the candidates and their supporters to accept the outcome of the election.
There should not be any form of rancour and violence that will disturb the peace in the state, because we are all one.
“And if for any reason, one party is not satisfy with the outcome of the poll, such party should seek legal redress instead of causing problems,” he said.
Also speaking with NAN, Oba Issa Olanipekun IV, Saki of Arigidi-Akoko, in Akoko NorthWest Local Government Area, commended INEC officials and security agencies for a peaceful election in his domain and beyond
He also called on political supporters not to allow politicians to use them for their own selfish interest.
“So far, there is peace in Arigidi Akoko and people are voting for candidates of their choice. Nobody is harassing anybody . As far as I am concerned the election is peaceful.
“By the grace of God, there will not be any problem because we had a meeting with INEC in Akure and we have warned our subjects to stay away from trouble.
“So, I am very sure that there will be no chaos. The era of political crisis when we had ‘operation wet e” is gone,” he said.
In a video seen by the Nation, the suspect was apprehended at Ward 4, Polling Unit 007 outside St. Stephen’s Primary School, Akure, Ondo State around 9 am on election day.
…decry candidates stepping down few hours to election
The Nigeria Civil Society Situation Room, a coalition of civil society groups accredited to monitor the Ondo state governorship election has warned political parties and their candidates participating in Saturday’s election against engaging in acts that will undermine the credibility of the election.
It particularly warned the parties to avoid engaging in any form of electoral malpractice, or vote buying as such activities undermine the credibility of the election and can erode public trust in elections.
In a pre-election report, signed by the convener, Yunusa Z. Ya’u and co-conveners, Franklin Oloniju and Mimidoo Achakpa, the situation room expressed concern over the poor voter mobilization and campaigns by political parties ahead of this election.
The Situation Room said this had become a re-occurring issue in every election in the country, especially the trend of candidates and their political parties “stepping down” and endorsing an opponent at the last minute of the election.
It said: “In just 48 hours before the election, there are reports that 3 political parties have stepped down and endorsed one of the major candidates in this election. This calls for an electoral reform that places a greater burden of responsibility and accountability on political parties.”
The group said: “In the build-up to this election, Situation Room embarked on a series of activities and engagements with relevant stakeholders. These included dialogue sessions with the electoral management body, political parties, security agencies and civic groups from Ondo State as well as a governorship debate that provided an opportunity for candidates to answer questions regarding their manifesto, enabling voters to assess the candidates based on communal issues.
“Situation Room notes with some levels of caution and optimism, the generally calm atmosphere pervading the election environment and acknowledges that it vastly differs from the tension-generating environment of past elections in the State.
“Situation Room hopes that this positive trend will endure till the end of the election process and beyond. However, this positive state of affairs does not obviate the existence of pockets of incidents and breakout of low-key political disagreements in the State.
“In particular, Situation Room notes the intolerance shown by supporters of some of the contending parties with regard to the forceful removal and destruction of rivals’ advertising boards and posters. We, therefore, caution against such behaviours of intolerance.
“Given the continuous fall in voter turnout in recent elections, stakeholders should intensify voter education efforts, particularly at the last minute, to combat voter apathy and ensure that citizens understand the importance of their participation in this election.
The group said it is gratifying to note INEC’s promise to learn from the lessons gathered from the Edo election. We hope that INEC will show the willingness and capacity to live up to that promise.
The Situation Room ask the commission to ensure that polling units open on time, as any delay can disenfranchise voters and undermine the credibility of the process, adding that Inefficient logistics, such as election officials arriving late or being misdirected, have hampered previous elections.
INEC, it said must ensure vehicles and personnel are adequately briefed on their routes to avoid delays. INEC should also ensure that materials already deployed to the RACs and Super RACs are moved to the polling units on time.
It said further that the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) should function optimally based on the report from the Mock test while INEC must ensure that the trained personnel are readily available to handle technical issues swiftly, ensuring that voters are not disenfranchised due to faulty equipment.
It encourages INEC to ensure that people with disability and other vulnerable persons like pregnant women and the aged are accorded priority attention at polling units and ensure assistive materials are effectively utilized.
In addition, it said INEC must ensure that the collation process is transparent and venues are made accessible to observers and fully lit to avoid the incidents that happened in the Edo election where the collation of results in some wards was done in darkness or relocated to the local government centres. INEC must safeguard the sanctity of the election results at all levels of the collation process.
According to the group, while a high level of security deployment is essential to deter breach of electoral peace, the presence of security forces must not be seen as intimidating to voters, while excessive displays of force can contribute to an atmosphere of fear and suppress voter turnout.
It said: “In past elections, we observed that security deployment has been uneven, with more officers concentrated in urban areas, leaving rural communities under-secured. The deployment must be evenly spread across both urban and rural areas and strategically to prevent possible disruptions.
“The police and other security agencies should maintain impartiality throughout the electoral process. Security lapses in previous elections, despite promises of improved professionalism, have undermined public trust.
“We urge the police to ensure their officers uphold the law without bias, and that electoral activities proceed without any interference from the security agencies.
“We urge security agencies to ensure that officers deployed for the election are provided with adequate transportation and timely welfare to enable them to perform their duties effectively. Relying solely on INEC provisions has been problematic in the past. This must not resurface in this election.
“Adequate security must be provided at all polling units, collation centres, and for the transportation of election materials. We equally call on the security agencies to be vigilant while manning the entry points to polling units to apprehend would-be hoodlums commissioned to disrupt the election process. We insist on transparency during collation, and any form of exclusion of accredited agents and observers must be avoided to ensure trust in the process.”
