•Let there be peace, and let the best candidate win

Voters in Ondo State are heading out tomorrow, Saturday, November 16, in an off-cycle poll to elect the person they would want to take office when a new governorship tenure kicks in on February 24, next year.

Ondo became one of the eight states that have fallen off the regular election cycle following a Court of Appeal verdict in February 2009 that upheld the petition tribunal’s invalidation of the emergence of Dr. Olusegun Agagu of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at the 2007 governorship poll, and affirmation of Dr. Olusegun Mimiko of the Labour Party as duly elected. Besides Ondo, other states that are off-cycle in their governorship elections are Bayelsa, Imo, Kogi, Ekiti, Osun, Anambra and Edo.

Tomorrow’s election will hold in 3,933 polling units located in 203 wards across Ondo’s 18 local government areas. Although there are 2,053,061 registered voters on the roll of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the state, only 1,757,205 who picked up their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) from the electoral body are eligible to vote tomorrow. Of existing 19 registered political parties, 18 are fielding candidates for the poll, although it is widely seen as a two-horse race between incumbent Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Dr. Agboola Ajayi of the PDP.

Both INEC and the security services have indicated they are deploying massively for the election, besides other relevant agencies that will be involved. The electoral body will post 15,732 ad-hoc staff on electoral tasks across the 3,933 polling units, and that is not mentioning scores of other officials who will be on duty beat. The agency accredited more than a hundred domestic and international organisations that will deploy some 3,500 observers, besides more than 100 media outfits that are assigning some 700 accredited personnel on election coverage.

On its part, the Nigeria Police said it would deploy 36,637 personnel from various specialised units, including the Special Intervention Squad, Police Mobile Force and Counter-Terrorism Unit for the election. It will also be working in concert with other security services like the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) that announced it would put 6,000 officers and men on election duty. Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun ordered a ban on all vehicular movement on roads, waterways and other modes of transportation from 6a.m. to 6p.m. within Ondo State territory on election day, with exemption for essential services like ambulances, fire services and accredited media personnel.

It is a shame that conducting elections in our clime is like going to war, unlike in other climes where elections are utterly non-disruptive of the daily run of events. But that is the reality we face. At the signing of a peace accord by political parties and their candidates in Akure, the Ondo capital, last weekend, Chairman of the National Peace Committee and former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, urged party leaders and candidates to accept the poll outcome once it is adjudged free, fair and credible, and to seek legitimate and peaceful means of addressing any concern that may arise thereafter. “I want to call on all stakeholders to work assiduously in their capacities to ensure that peace reigns supreme during this election, and that the Ondo State off-cycle election sets a precedent for other off-cycle elections to emulate,” he said.

INEC Chairman Professor Mahmood Yakubu said the commission had perfected its plans to deploy staff and materials timely to all voting and results collation locations across the state, including those in the riverine areas. “I will not be tired of appealing to political parties and candidates to note that your signatures on the peace accord document alone will not guarantee a peaceful election. The peace accord is not an automated, self-activating document. Your commitment to its implementation is critical. Therefore, as you sign the peace accord, you should commit yourselves to its implementation and pass the message to your supporters at all levels for compliance,”  he added.

We join our voice to the call for a peaceful election in the ‘Sunshine State’ tomorrow. It is noteworthy and laudable that unlike past elections in Ondo that were heralded by violence or its rhetoric, electioneering leading up to tomorrow’s poll has been uniquely tempered. This should be carried forward into the election proper and its aftermath.

All eyes will be on INEC to live up to its promise that there would be significant improvement in three areas: namely voter accreditation with the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System device, timely deployment of poll officials and materials (logistics), and the result management process pertaining to uploading results on the INEC Result Viewing Portal. Voters themselves need to be well behaved and should spurn inducement to vote-selling. But they can be helped greatly onto such comportment by confidence-boosting processes of INEC. Let the people freely choose and let that choice be honoured.

Ondo election: Parties to sign peace accord Nov. 8

Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, said on Thursday that political parties taking part in the November 16 governorship election in Ondo State will sign a peace accord on Friday, November 8, 2024 in Akure, the Ondo state capital.

Speaking at the 4th quarterly consultative meeting with Civil Society Organisations in Abuja, the INEC chairman said the peace accord will be coordinated by the National Peace Committee headed by former Head of state, Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar.

He said the Commission will also hold a meeting with stakeholder in Ondo state ahead of the elections and test the accreditation processes to ensure that everything is out in place for the smooth conduct of the election.

Yakubu said: “As you are all aware, the election is holding on Saturday 16th November 2024 which is just 2 weeks away. The collection of Permanent Voters’ Cards (PVCs), mainly from the recent voter registration, ended two days ago.

“A total 64,273 PVCs were collected by voters out of the  89,777 cards delivered to the State. This represents an impressive collection rate of 71.6%. I  want to appreciate the CSOs that helped to mobilise registered voters to collect their cards.

“In the next few days, the Commission will upload to our website the cumulative figure of all PVCs collected in each of the 3,933 Polling Units across the State for the purpose of result management as provided by law and for public information.

“As usual, we have learnt lessons from previous elections. We have improved on the voter accreditation process and the upload of results to the INEC Result Viewing (IReV) portal. There have been similar improvements in observer and media accreditation.

“Our voter education efforts are ongoing. The capacity of election duty staff has improved with hands-on training for especially Polling Unit officials.

“As we approach the Ondo State governorship election, there will be further improvements, especially in the areas of logistics for the movement of personnel and materials to both land and riverine locations to enable the prompt commencement of polls as well as the management of the processes on Election Day from voting to declaration of result.

“Already, Mock accreditation of voters and result upload to the IReV has been scheduled for Wednesday 6th November 2024 in 12 Polling Units across six Local Government Areas in the three Senatorial Districts of the State. Detailed locations of the centres has been uploaded to our website. Hardcopies are enclosed in your folders for this meeting.

“As early as next week, the Commission will undertake a final readiness assessment of our preparations for the Ondo election, meet with our officials, engage with stakeholders and interact with the security agencies and transport providers.

“On this note, I am also glad to announce that the National Peace Committee under the leadership of our respected former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar GFCR, is holding the signing of the Peace Accord for parties and candidates in Ondo State on Friday 8th November 2024.

“As the Ondo State Governorship approaches, I wish to remind CSOs that are yet to submit reports for the Edo Governorship election to do so in earnest. I also urge you to intensify your advocacy for peaceful elections, especially now that campaign by political parties and candidates is in full swing in the State.

“Happily, there has been no major incident of election-related violence known to the Commission in Ondo State so far. However, we are aware of flash points in some Local Government Area to which we have already drawn the attention of the security agencies.

“At the same time, I wish to remind you of your obligations as observers by complying with the Commission’s rules of engagement for accredited election observers.

“I wish to reiterate that the Commission reserves the right to withdraw the accreditation of any individual observer or group that violates Code of Conduct for election observation. A concise summary of the Code is contained in the 22-page document entitled “Briefing for Observers” available on our website www.inecnigeria.org

“Even as we prepare for the Ondo State Governorship election, the Commission is not unmindful of its other electoral obligations. As you are aware, the Timetable and Schedule of Activities for the Anambra State Governorship election was released recently.

“As required by law, the Commission is under obligation to publish the timetable not later than 360 days before the date fixed for the election. The idea is to provide ample time to those involved in elections as political parties, candidates, observers, the media and security agencies to prepare.

“A copy of the timetable is already available on our website. Again, hardcopies have been included in your folders for this meeting”.

  • Nonagenarian: I voted for my children’s future

A 91-year-old voter, Ma Bamisile Aderolabi Ajiromoke, has said she voted in the governorship election for the future of her children and grandchildren.

She was among several old men and women who came out to cast their votes.

According to her, she felt compelled to exercise her franchise despite her advanced years.

Ma Ajirimoke held tightly to her Permanent Voter Card after voting for her preferred candidate.

She voted at Unit 011, Ogbagi Ward 06 in Akoko Northwest. The unit has 405 registered voters.

Ma Ajiromoke said: “I voted because of my children, so that they can get job opportunities.”

She also urged whoever is elected governor to take care of the elderly.

Ondo decides: AD, APC trade words over voter inducement

The Alliance for Democracy (AD) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) yesterday traded words over alleged voter inducement.

AD Deputy Governorship candidate Ganny Dauda alleged that the APC distributed N1million to each polling unit in order to induce voters.

The running mate to Olusola Oke said he got information that APC agents in each unit got N500,000 with a promise to receive additional N500,000 to be shared to voters.

According to him, AD remains the party to beat despite any bid to buy votes.

Dauda praised the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for ensuring materials arrived on time.

He said: “This is 12noon and I can say that INEC distributed their materials early enough without hitches. People are coming out en mass to vote. People are really interested. Security has been efficient.

“But I will not hesitate to mention that there were threats from a particular party, that is the APC, that even when they lose an election, they will be declared the winner.

But former Ondo State House of Assembly Speaker and APC chief Victor Olabintan debunked the allegation.

He said not even President Muhammadu Buhari would sanction voter cash-for-vote

“They are the ones distributing money. APC does not distribute money. Where will the APC even get the money to distribute in the first instance?

“They said Buhari is behind us, but you know what Buhari can do. If you tell Buhari that you want to use money to win an election, he will ask EFCC to arrest you.

“We worked very hard and while we were on the field, we were concentrating on what we were going to do for the people.

“That’s what making us to coast home to victory. The people have spoken and spoken well.”

  • Ondo: Suit challenging Akeredolu’s candidature stalled

The absence of Justice Nnamdi Dimgba has stalled hearing in a suit challenging the candidature of Rotimi Akeredolu as the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate in Saturday’s governorship election in Ondo State.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that a stalwart of the APC in Ondo, Olusegun Abraham, filed the suit at the Federal High Court, Abuja, saying the process that produced Akeredolu was illegal.

Abraham alleged that the process that produced the defendant as APC governorship candidate was not in conformity with the law.

He also joined the APC National Chairman, Mr. John Oyegun and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as defendants.

The suit is seeking an interim order to restrain the APC from parading Akeredolu as its governorship candidate and stop Akeredolu from parading himself as such pending the determination of the motion.

At the resumed sitting on Wednesday, officials of the court informed parties to the suit that the judge was ill and unable to attend the day’s sitting.

Consequently, lawyers representing both parties picked December 6 as the next adjourned date for hearing of the case.

Justice Dimgba had at the last sitting on November 10 adjourned hearing of other motions in the suit till November 23.
