Electoral agency urges reporters to avoid fake news

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has advised reporters to guard against fake news ahead of next month’s governorship election in Ondo State.

Speaking during a training programme for reporters, producers and on-air personalities, National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee (IVEC), Sam Olumekun, said fake news has the potential to incite unnecessary tension and violence.

Olumekun, who was represented by the Ondo State Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Mrs. Oluwatoyin Babalola, appealed to reporters to exercise caution and diligence in verifying information before disseminating it, particularly when it pertains to the commission’s activities and the electoral process.

Olumekun said journalists could play a key role in curbing the spread of fake news and ensuring that the public receives accurate and credible information. He said: “We count on you to help educate the public on the importance of peaceful participation.

“Additionally, it is crucial that you offer balanced coverage of all political parties and candidates, ensuring that your reports remain objective and free from bias.

“During the election, your coverage must be both factual and responsible. While we encourage you to report incidents as they happen, this must be done in a manner that does not escalate tensions or incite violence. Your presence at polling units for coverage will also be crucial to assure the public that the process is transparent.

“After the election, we will rely on you to report the results and other developments with accuracy and integrity. As the election outcome will reflect the people’s will, your coverage should foster peace and encourage acceptance of the results once it conforms with democratic principles.”

The Administrative Secretary of INEC, Mr. Biodun Amosun, said the workshop was designed to equip journalists with comprehensive information on the guidelines, processes, and procedures that would govern the election. He said they must be well-versed in processes to ensure accurate reportage and avoid speculation, misinformation, and disinformation.

“You must report these rules accurately to prevent confusion or misinformation. Whether covering the proper use of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) or detailing the steps involved in result collation, your reporting must correctly reflect these processes.”

The foundation said for the Ororo -1 Well at OML95 has been burning with no attention from the government, or the company responsible for it for the past three years.

It said the burning well has now become a symbol of ecocide and outright neglect by the Nigerian state.

“The burning well has now become a symbol of ecocide and outright neglect by the Nigerian state. Several different environmentalists have raised their voices over decades of destructive extraction of petroleum resources that disrupted ecosystems with decades of exploration and have turned a once-thriving region into one of the most deadly and polluted places on Earth. Awoye’s tale is a sad example of a healthy region turned into a sacrifice zone by the pursuit of fossil fuels,” Bassey said.

  • Ondo 2020: PDP and the struggle for Akeredolu’s job

Ahead of next year’s governorship election in Ondo State, ‘Dare Odufowokan, Assistant Editor, reports that the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is making early preparations to dislodge the All Progressives Congress (APC)

In a candid statement to reporters last week, the All Progressives Congress in Ondo State declared that the forthcoming governorship election will be an easy ride for the party, saying the government of the ruling party had performed well since it came to power. The state Publicity Secretary of the APC, Alex Kalejaiye, announced with an air of confidence “the APC is waxing stronger daily, which will make it difficult for the opposition to overthrow the government in the next year election.”

Kalejaiye’s comments were made in reference to the highly anticipated governorship elections set to take place next year and displayed the posture of a party unconcerned with the glaring determination of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the numerous gubernatorial aspirants now crisscrossing the length and breadth of the state in their quest to take over the job of APC’s Rotimi Akeredolu come 2020.

But some observers of the politics of the state say Kalejaiye’s boldness in responding to questions about the coming election, as well as the confidence being exuded by other chieftains of the ruling party, should not be taken as all that is needed to write APC’s name in the winner’s column in predicting the outcome of the election. The upcoming polls, they say, may be the most fiercely contested, since the return to democracy in 1999.

A major factor that should not be discounted is the determination of the leading opposition party, the PDP, to return to power in the state it once ruled for more than a decade. Ayo Ademinokan, Secretary of the state’s chapter of Voters’ Right Agenda (VoRA), stated that “the greatest strength of the opposition PDP is its new found determination. The party is not just talking; its chieftains are matching the talks with action. And it appears the people are taking better notice of all these.”

Also, the PDP is enjoying the confidence and popularity that come with its success at the 2019 general elections in the state. Against most predictions by bookmakers, it snatched up two senatorial seats, producing Nicholas Tofowomo and Ayo Akinyelure for the South senatorial and central zones respectively and won four seats in the House of Representatives. The results were serious setbacks for the ruling party and analysts say it will be foolhardy for any serious politician or party to ignore such turnaround in the fortune of an almost dead Ondo PDP.

Obviously, the ruling party is not ignoring these signs of rejuvenation within the PDP. Not to be cornered, the APC too, according to reliable sources, is working round the clock to shake off the disappointment of the last general election reposition itself ahead of the 2020 governorship contest. “The PDP can make all the noise, we know our weaknesses and we are working hard to strengthen ourselves ahead of 2020. They want to take advantage of some minor disagreements within our party, but we will block all holes soon,’ a party leader assured.

    PDP’S MEN

According to the state chairman of the PDP, Clement Faboyede, not less than 17 aspirants have signified their intention for the party’s governorship ticket ahead of the election. He said the high number of those who are interested in flying the flag of the party in the governorship election is an attestation to the efforts of the party at repositioning itself. “This is happening because we looked inward and worked hard to rebuild the people’s confidence and trust in our party across the state.”

Leading other aspirants is the PDP standard-bearer during the 2016 governorship election, Eyitayo Jegede (SAN), who recently disclosed that he will give a shot at the governorship election coming up next year in the state. Jegede, who lost the 2016 election to Akeredolu, said God has directed him to contest the 2020 governorship election. Intimating party leaders of his resolve to seek the PDP’s nomination as its gubernatorial candidate once again, Jegede said, “I am here to thank you for the support you gave me during the 2016 governorship election.

I see myself as somebody who is ready to serve. I contested the last gubernatorial election and we knew the result, the following day we went to church to thank God for how far He had helped us. Now, I consulted God Almighty again; I asked if I should go forward on this project, He answered me that I should go ahead. I am asking you whether to go ahead or not? This is not the time for the campaign. We will surely come back when the time comes. I seek your support for our great party, the PDP and appreciate you for all your efforts both during the 2016 governorship election and the last general elections. ”

Also in the race already is the National Vice Chairman of the PDP (Southwest), Eddy Olafeso. Olafeso described his move as a rescue mission, describing the present administration in the state as a disaster. “There is no government in Ondo State here. This is the state of Ajasin; it is the state of Adefarati; it is the state of Olusegun Agagu and Olusegun Mimiko. We are now witnessing a situation where students are paying from primary school level to secondary school. The tertiary institutions are far beyond the ordinary man.

“I’m a product of the Awolowo era. I won’t have been educated if there is no social welfare programme for the ordinary man on the street. They have abdicated their responsibilities and they have stepped on the head of history,” he said,

Otunba Bamidele Akingboye is another PDP chieftain in the governorship race. The businessman turned politician said he wants the mandate in next year’s election so as to change the state from the current civil service state to an industrial haven. “I am here to seek for your support in my quest to rescue this state. We have enough of potentials untapped and it will take someone who has the knowledge for it to be harnessed.

“It is high time we changed the narrative about our state being a civil service state. We need to industrialise this state with someone that can think outside the box. Governance is a serious business and we need a businessman to handle the state. I am offering myself for this onerous task and I know I have all it takes to lead the state. But I will support and work for whoever would emerge from the party’s transparent primaries in order to defeat the ruling APC in the state,” he pledged.

Among others jostling for the PDP ticket are two prominent Ilaje sons, three-term Commissioner, Sola Ebiseni and former Chairman of Ilaje Local Government, Banji Okunomo. Both are not leaving any stone unturned as they comb the nooks and crannies of the state, convincing party leaders and members of their readiness to take on the APC and its candidate, whoever that may turn out to be, next year at the polls.

    DONE WITH ZONING?

Meanwhile, the party has dismissed the insinuation of zoning of the party’s ticket to a particular senatorial district area of the state; an action some party stalwarts believe may spell trouble ahead of the primaries. “They will find it difficult to zone the ticket to a particular part of the state. Check out the aspirants now in the race and you will agree with me that we have a spread that cut across the state. From the central, south and north senatorial districts, we have aspirants. So, we are considering leaving the contest open,” a party leader said.

But findings by The Nation revealed that some chieftains of the party are still lobbying for the adoption of a zoning arrangement. Inside sources claim the move is meant to provide an easy route to the ticket for one of the aspirants believed to be the preferred candidate of some national leaders of the party. “If PDP is serious about winning the next election, we have to field a candidate that can draw support for the party from our notable leaders at the national level.

“We need a lot of resources and support for the governorship election. We need visibility and personalities too. Not all the aspirants can draw Alhaji Abubakar Atiku, Senator Bukola Saraki and Senator Ekweremadu to Ondo for campaigns and other programmes. We need to consider these. And if zoning the ticket to a particular area is what we need to do to get the right candidate, we will ensure that the party does that,” a chieftain of the PDP from Owo said on Thursday.

But another leader of the party from Odigbo punctured the above argument, saying it is not in the character of the PDP in Ondo State to zone its tickets. According to the former federal lawmaker, the party will allow the very best of the aspirants to emerge as the candidate. “Our party in Ondo State has never zoned its governorship seat and there is no history where you would find the party deliberately zoning its gubernatorial ticket.

We have always ensured at all times that we give visible examples to show that we are a party that promotes free and fair electoral process. We will allow all contestants regardless of the zone they come from to contest in the election. The best of them will emerge in a free and fair election. We have almost 20 aspirants at the moment. Our job as a party is to ensure that there is freedom of choice by party members as to who would become the party’s candidate.”

The Nation also gathered that there are moves by some leading chieftains of the party outside the state, especially from the camp of a former presidential candidate, to influence the emergence of a particular aspirant as the candidate of the party for the next governorship election. The said aspirant, it was learnt, may be rewarded with the ticket for working hard for the party at the last presidential election in the state. Sources within the party said the adoption of zoning is one of the avenues being considered to pave the way for the emergence of the said aspirant.

“Beyond the hearsays, I can tell you for free that the PDP as a national party is interested in what is happening in Ondo currently. Collectively, chieftains within and outside Ondo are discussing about who can win the election for us next year. Consequently, deciding who will be the candidate will not just be limited to internal factors. Some external factors will also come to play. It is a combination of all these factors and interests that will determine who will go for us,” another party source added.

    HIGH HOPES

While the wait for who the candidate will be continues, many party leaders are confident that time is up for APC in the state. Former Chief of Staff to Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, Kola Ademujimi, while noting that the PDP is more formidable under the current state leadership, enjoined all aspirants to join hands together to build the party. He further disclosed that the crisis rocking the ruling party in the state now is an indication that God is behind the PDP to deliver the people of the state from the ravaging poverty the current administration bestowed on the people.

PDP’s Director of Publicity, Zadok Akintoye, who accused Governor Akeredolu of deliberately sowing seeds of discord and promoting interethnic disharmony within the state ahead of the 2020 governorship election for allegedly saying it is not the turn of Akure to produce the governor of the state, called on the ruling APC to be prepared to vacate the Government House in 2020. Akintoye said in the statement “our attention has been drawn to a statement made by the governor of Ondo state, Arakunrin Rotimi Akeredolu where he purportedly claimed that the Akure sub-ethnic unit in Ondo State is unqualified at the moment to seek the mandate of the people to lead the state.

“Our party believes it is within the right of every indigene of Ondo State to aspire and, if the people so decide, become a governor. It is not the duty of any self-imposed anti-democratic leader to undermine the right of the people. As a party, the PDP will provide a level playing field for its members across the three senatorial districts who may wish to succeed the failing and poorly performing government of APC in the state. We find it a putrid and highly condemnable comment by the governor and an attempt to pitch the people against each other for electoral gain.”

State Chairman, Faboyode, while buttressing claims by PDP chieftains ahead of the 2020 polls, said “our party parades an array of vibrant aspirants, totalling 17 in number as at now, and they are ready to contest the elections. And the worst of our aspirants is better than the best of the APC in terms of capacity and ability to deliver on governance. This is not Sherrif or Markafi period again. Our governorship primary would be transparent to promote internal democracy.”

A truck has reportedly killed an eight-year old boy identified as Kalid at Owena in Ondo State.

The truck was said to have knocked down Kalid who was hawking Pap (‘Eko,’) killing him on the spot.

Sources said the truck, which developed a break failure, hit a vehicle being towed.

The vehicle in the process lost direction and hit the boy.

It took the effort of sympathisers to remove his body under the truck.

The intervention of the men of the Nigeria Police and the Army who mobilised to the scene, saved the truck driver from being lynched by irate youths.

Men of the Nigeria Police from Idanre Division were said to have taken away the body of the deceased.

  • Ondo APC, PDP: Gazing at 2020

Ahead of next year’s governorship election in Ondo State, the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have returned to the drawing board. Correspondent DAMISI OJO examines the permutations by the ruling and opposition parties.

The governorship election will hold in Ondo State next year.

Although  the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has not released the time table, the political parties are warming up for the poll.

Already, gladiators are preparing  for the contest. No fewer than 20 parties are expected to participate in the exercise, the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are the parties to watch.

While the PDP is banking on its victoryduring the last presidential and National Assembly elections, which was due to the disunity in the APC, the ruling party is working hard to retain the Alagbaka House.

Indeed, there is still a stumbling block on the way for the APC, judging  by the disharmony in the party. APC leaders are still at loggerheads.

Since 2016 election, the heat has been on. The progressives party has been divided since that disputed primary. During the election, the party split.  The different groups worked at  cross-purpose. They did not support Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu.

The aggrieved members were fighting the ‘Team Aketi’, which worked for Akeredolu to become the helmsman in 2016. Now, the group is working to ensure that the Owo-born lawyer gets the second term ticket and retains the seat till 2024.

Akeredolu, who was initially relunctant to unite the factional groups, shortly after emerging as the governor, is seeking reconciliation ahead of next year polls. But, he still has many hurdles to surmount to achieve the goal.

Recently, the APC Southwest Caucus, led by Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, was in Akure, the Ondo State capital, seeking for unity and to guard against destroying the party.

At the meeting, it was learnt that   next year’s election and second term ticket werenot  on the agenda. The meeting was basically for reconciliation to fortify the ruling party.

Besides, sources hinted that there was an agreement to dissolve the APC’s State Executive, led by Ade Adetimehin, to be replaced with a Care-taker Committee. Its membership is expected to be all-encompassing.

However, after almost three-months, the same exco is still running the party, to the displeasure of the aggrieved parties .

The concerned groups ,led by former Deputy Governor Alli Olanusi, who is also a member of theAPC Board of Trusteees (BOT), have  reminded Abuja forces to support the resolution.

They are feeling uncomfortable with  loyalists of ‘Team Aketi,’ who are running the party. They are frowning at the inability of the NWC to dissolve the state exco as agreed upon during the July 10 peace meeting.

For now, the estranged members have not been accomodated by Akeredolu to strengten the party to become a winning platform ahead of next year’s poll.

The crack is bold on the wall. However, some aspirants are warming up.  They are not intimidated by the power of incumbency weilded by the governor. Therefore, Akeredolu may not be the only aspirant at the primary.

The contenders include the Executive Director, Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC),  Ife Oyedele, former governorship candidate of the Alliance for Democracy (AD) the Pioneer Chairman of APC Isaac Kekemeke and former Information Commissioner Banji Ayiloge.

Observers are of the view that the senator representing Ondo North District, Prof Ajayi Boroffice, may be interested in the coveted seat. But,  feelers from his camp have not been definite.

Three aspirants-Oyedele, Oke and Kekemeke-are from the South District, which is agitating for power shift.

They said the Central had produced  Dr Olusegun Mimiko and the North has produced Akeredolu, adding that   the South has not tasted it in post- Olusegun Agagagu period. To the South, the state has an unwritten zoning arrangement.

The PDP is also thirsty for power,  having been booted out of office on February 24, 2016 by the ruling APC.

PDP lost power to the APC due to  internal wrangling and litigations.

The crisis led to the failure of its candidate, Eyitayo Jegede (SAN), to succeeed Mimiko.

Observers believe the party, which must have learnt its lesson, is ready to correct its past mistakes.

The party’s success March general elections gave it a ray of hope.  The party produced two senators, Nicholas Tofowomo (South) and Ayo Akinyelure  (Central).

Already, the party in readiness to send Akeredolu and his party, APC packing in Alagbaka House, is parading no fewer than 16 aspirants.

Majority of them are from the North where governor Akeredolu hails from. Some are from the South and few from the Central.

PDP aspirants are Eddy Olafeso (P.hD), who is the National Vice Chairman (Southwest ) and former Commissioner for Information, Orientation and Mobilisation under Agagu.

Jegede, a former Commissioner for Justice under Mimiko, was the 2016 PDP governorship candidate.

He came second after losing to  Akeredolu.

Already, Jegede has begun consultations without minding some side talks that Ondo Central should rest for now after the exit of Mimiko.

He said he had consulted God Almighty on whether he  should go forward on the project and the answer was in affirmative.

Also on the list is Ebiseni, a lawyer and a three- time commissioner, and  the former Chairman of Ilaje Local Government and immediate past Publicity Secretary of the party, Banji Okunomo, and Otunba Bamidele Akingboye.

In PDP, there will be no zoning. The congress will elect the strongest candidate.

Stakeholders in the two parties are posting that their parties will win.

  • Killing of python caused cows’ death on sacred hill, say indigenes

MORE facts emerged on Tuesday concerning the mysterious death of 36 cows on Okeowa hill in Ijare, Ifedore Local Government Area of Ondo State.

It was learnt from indigenes of the town that the herders killed a big python on the Okeowa hill.

The killing of the snake, according to them, is a taboo and against the tradition of the community.

Thirty-Six cows owned by some herders died mysteriously in the community after they were said to have been struck by lightning on Saturday.

The traditional ruler and people of the community confirmed that the cows died after they desecrated the Okeowa hill, where sacrifice is made every year by their monarch.

But a source in the town said the cows died because the people abandoned the annual ritual at Okeowa hills.

“When you get to the palace, ask them when last they worshipped on Okeowa,” he said.

The Miyetti Attah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria in the state described the death of the 36 cows as an act of God.

Its Chairman, Bello Garba, said members of the association had visited the area to ascertain what was responsible for the death of the cows.

He noted that their findings showed that the cows were not poisoned, as being insinuated in some quarters.

Garba said his members would always live in peace with the host communities.

He added that the association would continue to sensitise its members on the need to avoid sacred areas when grazing animals, to prevent a recurrence.

  • Police probe ‘stabbing’ at Akure nightclub

ONDO State Commissioner of Police, Undie Adie has ordered full scale investigation into the alleged stabbing of nine persons by a policeman Taiwo Orisadare at a nightclub in Akure, the state capital.

A statement by the command’s spokesman, Femi Joseph, a Superintendent of Police(SP), said the investigation became imperative because of the distortion of facts

The command urged members of the public to disregard social media reports on the matter, saying the story is concocted to deceive the  public.

The statement reads, “The attention of the Ondo State Police Command has been drawn to a story trending on the social media, captioned “Police sergeant stabs self, eight others with broken bottle in Ondo”.

“ To set the record straight, there was a social gathering organised by a friend to one of our policemen, Sergeant Taiwo Orishalade at a popular eatery in Akure to celebrate the birthday of his girlfriend.

“The police officer who was not on official duty and also not in uniform sat with some other invited guests at the party. At a point, some boys who apparently identified the police officer even though he was in mufti, approached him to buy drinks for them.

“The policeman humbly told them that he was just invited by a friend to the party and besides, he did not have enough money on him to accede to their request.

“The boys who were apparently drunk and appeared like miscreants, insisted that the officer must buy them drinks or leave the scene, or in the alternative be ready to be killed just like they did to his colleague inspector sometime ago.

“The officer pleaded with them to take things calmly, but in a twinkle of an eye, one of the boys slapped him why the other one took a bottle, smashed it and stabbed the Sergeant with it. Naturally, he had to fight back which resulted into injuries to the three of them.”

  • ‘NYSC didn’t post Corps members to religious organisations’

THE Ondo State secretariat of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has denied posting its members to religious organisations, especially churches.

Its spokesman Bankole Simeone made the clarification on Sunday in Akure, the state capital.

He said the NYSC secretariat in the state was responding to the trending “fake story” on the social media to clear its name.

The spokesman stressed that the secretariat would not go against the established policy of the scheme.

Simeone said: “The NYSC in Ondo State has observed with dismay the fake news trending on the social media about a purported allegation that the secretariat has posted some corps members to religious organisations, especially churches.

“Ordinarily, one would have ignored the report as a figment of the writer’s imagination. But as a responsible corporate citizen, we do not treat any matter regarding or relating to our esteemed and patriotic corps members with levity.

“The story is not only untrue but mischievous, misleading and contains fallacies capable of tarnishing the good image the secretariat is enjoying in the public eye.

“Ondo State cannot work at crossroads with the directives or policies of the National Youth Service Corps scheme where it is clearly stated that no corps member should be posted to religious organisations.

“We have never done so and we do not intend to compromise on this very sensitive posting policy.

“I wish to state categorically that apart from the four key areas, which the policy is clear and unambiguous about, other areas we serve because of their voluntary nature of assignment are non-governmental and cultural organisations.”

Simeone added that any posting done in error or contrary to the established policy would be reversed immediately it is brought to the notice of the management.

He advised the public to disregard the purported allegations in the social media report.
