  • Ondo first lady launches 2018 Summer Tennis Clinic for children

    The Wife of Ondo State Gov., Mrs. Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu, on Friday launched the 2018 State Summer Tennis Clinic for children between four and 13 years old.

    Speaking at the ceremony, which took place at the Township Stadium in Akure, Akeredolu expressed joy that the dream of initiating the tennis clinic was gradually being realised.

    She said that she was impressed that the children who participated in last year’s edition attended other competitions and won laurels.

    “This clinic is essentially to identify and develop talents in our children.

    “It is important to encourage sports development among youths in the state, particularly at the grassroots level.”

    She said that the essence was to discover and develop the latent potential and skills of young ones who were capable of becoming champions.

    “The benefits of catching our youth’s young, especially in sports, are enormous.

    “Let us look at champions like Venus and Serena Williams. They all started as young children.

    “Today, they have become world champions winning numerous awards. We have Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, and Billie Jean King, just to mention a few.

    The governor’s wife said that the programme “is not a government thing”.

    “You can give into it. Let nobody wait for the governor to bring money here,” she said.

    Mr Saka Yusuf-Ogunleye, the state Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, commended the governor’s wife for the initiative.

    Yusuf-Ogunleye said that the programme would go a long way in building future tennis players for the state and Nigeria.

    A participant, Aanuoluwapo Efunsile, said the participants would use the opportunity provided by Akeredolu to develop themselves and become great tennis players.

    300 students are participating in the programme holding from August. 23 to Septemper.1, 2018.

    It is organised by the Office of Wife of Ondo Governor in collaboration with the Ondo State Sports Council. 

  • 2019: Group backs ex-Ondo council boss for Senatorial race

    Scores of Youths in the Southern district of Ondo State have adopted an engineer, Raphael Ademulegun as their candidate for the 2019 senatorial election in the state.

    At a news briefing in Akure, the state capital, the youths mainly from Ikale axis of Okitipupa local government lamented the alleged retrogression in the area due to poor representation particularly at the National Assembly.

    The chairman, Ikale Youth Organization (IYO) Ademola Akinrinlola who spoke with reporters said Ademulegun, the chairman of Odigbo local government in Ondo state is their sole candidate for the Ondo South Senatorial seat.

    He said they hinged their decision on the fact that the former council chief going by his antecedents and youthful disposition would elevate the district.

    The youth leader said irrespective of the political platform Ademulegun was to run for the election, they would support him for victory.

    IYO lamented that the Ondo South senatorial district had suffered a major setback due to bad leadership and errors in appointment.

    It said “Due to poor representation and appointment error by the executive, Ondo South has suffered a major setback in terms of development and infrastructure.”

    “We are in darkness for the past four years now and we have a senator, a minister and other elected and appointed representatives as if we have none. It is irritating that many of them are making move to return for the second term despite their present failures.

    “Just imagine our current Senator in Ondo south is also seeking re-election despite his obvious failures in governance. He has been in the Senate since over three years as if the Ondo South senatorial seat is vacant”.

    The aggrieved youths maintained that they would go out to all the local governments and wards in the district to mobilize support for Ademulegun.

  • Sallah: 14 passengers cheat death in Ondo

    Fourteen persons in transit on Tuesday reportedly escaped death when an articulated vehicle laden with gas fell on a commercial bus on Ore-Lagos highway in Ondo State.

    According to the Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps State (FRSC), Rotimi Adeleye, the gas laden truck lost control and fell on a 14-seater bus parked at a restaurant on Ore-Lagos expressway in Odigbo Local Government Area of the state.

    The FRSC official said “A tanker laden with gas lost control and hit the side of the bridge, it thereafter a fell on a 14-seater passenger bus parked in a restaurant at Ore.

    “However, no life was lost; all the passengers in the bus were outside the vehicle when the crash occurred”.

    He said passengers had already disembarked from the bus to eat in the eatery when the incident occurred.

    Adeleye noted that explosion and gas leakages would have happened if the truck driver had failed to install stock valve in his vehicle

    He warned truck drivers to always install relevant road safety gadgets in their vehicles in order to guard against explosion or gas leakage during crashes.

     

  • Ondo APC mourns Ex-ACN Chair

    The All Progressives Congress ( APC ) in Ondo State has mourned the exit of one of its leaders, Chief Noah Adesoji.

    The late political and community leader passed on last weekend at the age of 83. He was the Ondo State Chairman of the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN).

    The State Chairman of the APC, Ade Adetimehin, described the death of the octogenarian as a deep blow to the State chapter, “especially at this time when he should be reaping from his years of political toiling”.

    Adetimehin, who led members of the State Working Committee (SWC) to commiserate with the bereaved family in Ile-Oluji, said the departed leader lived a rewarding life,saying he was like a father to many of them.

    He said: “Pa Adesoji was a reliable and trustworthy leader; he was a party man to the core, and a progressive till his last day on earth.

    Adetimehin prayed that God would console the bereaved family.

    He informed them that Governor, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu had assured that the State government would be deeply involved in the burial of the former progressives leader.

    Responding on behalf of the family, one of the deceased children, Kehinde Adesoji, thanked the State Government and the APC for standing by the family over the loss of their father.

    The young Adesoji said although his later father was above 80, but noted that “we never wished he should leave at this time because he remained a pillar of the family”.

  • Eid-El-Kabir: NSCDC deploys 1,500 personnel in Ondo state

    The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), says it has deployed 1,500 personnel in Ondo state to protect lives and property during the Eid-el Kabir festival.

    Mr Pedro Awili, NSCDC State Commandant, disclosed this in an interview with our reporters on Saturday in Akure.

    Awili said that the deployment was in line with the directive and operational order from the NSCDC Commander-General, Abdulahi Gana to roll out for proper monitoring and protection of people of the state.

    According to him, the security agency will be on the street to further protect lives and property; and our men will be on standby day and night during and after the Muslim festival.

    “So, for this year Eid-el Kabir, 1,500 of our men have been deployed in order to ensure that no criminal element is allowed to operate across all the 18 Local Government Areas of the state.

    “As usual, we are doing this in collaboration with other security agencies. This is part of social responsibility of the command to protect people of the state.

    “Meanwhile, we have all agreed that there no stone will be left unturned and we are going to ensure that whoever commits crime will be arrested and prosecuted accordingly,” he said.

    The commandant warned that whoever intends to commit crime should relocate to other state, saying his command would not tolerate any criminality in the state.

    “For those who intend to commit crime. We want to remind them that Ondo State is now a safe haven for everybody and there is no hiding place for criminals,” he said.

    Awili, who urged the Muslims faithful to be security conscious during their celebration, advised them to show love to adherents of other faiths

    “Let me appeal to our Muslim brothers and sisters that they should not take laws into their hands because this is time to show love and extend their love to Christians, while Christians should also extend their love to the Muslims” he said.

    Ondo State governor, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu has joined other Nigerians across the globe to felicitate with Oba Otudeko, an industrialist and patriotic Nigerian per excellence, as he celebrates his 75th birthday.

    Akeredolu in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary (CPS) heartily wished Otudeko more fruitful years of continued service to humanity.

    According to the governor, “in the life of mortals, commemoration of of the day of first contact with the earthly plane comes in a yearly calendar”

  • ‘Emulate Tinubu’s political Virtues’

    A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo state, Adeniyi Ayodeji on Saturday urged progressive politicians to emulate the virtues of the former Lagos state governor, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.

    He pointed out that he left the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) because he valued the selfless way the APC leader played politics of inclusion.

    Besides, Ayodeji said he was fascinated by the political ideology of the ruling APC, which gingered him to move from the PDP to APC to work with other progressives elements in the country.

    Ayodeji, a United States (US) based Geologist and House of Representatives Aspirant for Idanre/Ifedore federal constituency spoke with reporters in Akure, the Ondo state capital.

    The aspirant who is the former Vice- Chairman,Idanre local government under late Dr Olusegun Agagu’s PDP’s administration, said” I admire the political structure massively built by Tinubu and his investment in human capacity through which many people rose to higher level.

    “Since I left Nigeria over a decade ago, I have been watching with keen interest the progressive traits of the APC stalwart (Tinubu) in area of improving the lives of the masses”.

    The National Assembly Aspirant lamented that Idanre/Ifedore federal constituency presently occupied by Bamidele Baderinwa (White)have been denied good representation at the lower chamber in Abuja due to alleged low performance.

    He assured his constituents that if elected, he would liberate his constituents through various empowerment programmes that would transform their lives.

    Ayodeji noted that the gale of defections from APC to PDP would not affect the victory of the ruling party in 2019, stressing that those who moved out of the party were formerly in the PDP and nothing has changed.

    He encouraged politicians against spending huge amount of money to aspire for political positions, stressing that the development was aiding low performance of political office holders.

    The Idanre-born politician pointed out that the lawmakers that returned to their former party (PDP) had ulterior motive which was based on selfish interest rather than that of the masses they were to represent.

  • I will support youths for leadership role – Akeredolu

    Ondo State Governor, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu has pledged to support the youths to take up leadership positions in the society.

    The Governor, who described the youths as the future of the country, stressed the need to listen to innovative ideas from the youths in order to drive the society forward with regards to the present day realities.

    Governor Akeredolu spoke at the occasion of the 2018 Youth Day Celebration, held at the state Cultural Center, Adegbemile, Akure,the state capital.

    He explained that the youths are more informed and enlightened in conformity with modern realities.

    The governor charged the Youths to contest for political positions in the country, adding that they must come up with new initiatives to challenge the status quo.

    He said “I will support you to take up leadership positions. I will encourage you with all my might if you want to make desirable change that will make our nation better

    Akeredolu, who restated his support for the  #NotTooYoungToRun Bill, however advised the Youths to wait until President Buhari is through with his second term in Year 2023 before they contest for his office, so that they can inherit the solid foundation the President is Presently laying.

    At the occasion, the governor was decorated as the grand patron of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) in Ondo state by the state Chairman, Comrade Esther Owoeye.

     

  • 102 Women die at childbirth daily – Akeredolu

    Wife of the Ondo State Governor, Mrs Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu on Monday said no fewer than 102 women die daily during childbirth.

    Besides, she noted that 2,123 children could not be alive to celebrate their 5th birthday because of premature death.

    Mrs Akeredolu hinged the challenges on low literacy level of most Women,stressing that half of Nigeria’s women population were illiterates.

    She noted that the major cause of low literacy level among Nigerian women was lack of opportunity to be properly schooled due to gender stereotypes prevailing in the country.

    Mrs Akeredolu spoke at the 2nd edition of ‘BEMORE’ summer boot camp ceremony at PSTI, Ilara-Mokin where another set of 400 girls were empowered in the field of Information and Communication Techology (ICY) as well as Solar technology.

    According to her, government at all levels needed  to pay more attention to girl-child in Nigeria, saying no nation can achieve sustainable development until special attention was paid to girl-child in  terms of education and protection.

    She maintained that Nigeria female illiteracy population remains higher till date, adding that more than half of Nigerian women were still without a formal education which must receive urgent attention.

    Mrs Akeredolu said, “Our greatest error as a nation is not the acts that prompted the 1967 civil war. Our greatest error has been and continue to be, denying the girl child equal access to quality education by upholding cultural norms, traditions and religious beliefs that discriminate against them.

    “I have dedicated my life to empowering the women folk simply because I understand that a prosperous woman equals a prosperous family and in turn a prosperous community and this ideology drives me and I believe it should drive every individual seeking a better world today.

    “An investment in the girl-child is not only an investment that secures our nation’s future but one that also transforms our present state. Young girls are vibrant and smart, they have potentials yearning for expression locked inside them. We will be astonished at what they can do if we support them in unlocking these potentials.

    The founder, Breast Cancer Association of Nigeria(BRECAN) was optimistic that the beneficiaries would transform Nigeria to a digital country and bring an end to one of the greatest issues bedevilling the country especially unstable electricity.

     

  • ‘Support Buhari’s administration’

    Nigerians have been urged to rally support for the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari in its bid to tackle the menace of corruption pervading the country.

    A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC),Olukayode Ehinlanwo made the appeal on Wednesday while declaring his intention to represent Ilaje/Ese-Odo federal constituency for the 2019 election held at Igbekebo,headquarters of Ese-Odo local government of Ondo state.

    According to him, the present change mantra has various dimensions of infrastructural and organisational benefits through which federal and state governments have made giant strides.

    He said” a lot of ground can be regained if we re-strategise our focus, more so with the various opportunities abound for the benefits of our people”.

    Ehinlanwo said the urge to the tap from these multi-farious opportunities the primary objective while he declared his intention to serve his people.

    The aspirant said APC is the only platform that could cater for the collective well-being of the masses.

    He noted that the fight against corruption and insurgency were on course, stressing that economic revival, prudent and transparent management of our nation ‘economy and  compassion  for the social welfare of the people would transform the country.

    He said “there is a need to compliment all these efforts and we can only do this by electing people with genuine understanding of what an effective and robust representation is.

    “A representation hinged on diligence, transparency and accountability. These efforts can also gather immeasurable momentum if  we give full support to President Buhari’s re-election in 2019”.

    Ehinlanwo assured that even though ‘looters’ are staging come back, but vowed that they will fail with the determination of progressive Nigerians.
