  • Day America stood still for Owo Kingdom

Hundreds of Owo indigenes in Ondo State recently gathered in St Louis -Missouri, USA, to celebrate their common heritage and pull resources towards health development of their home-land. Taiwo Abiodun, who was at the event, reports.

IT was clearly a joyful affair, as they all exchanged banters, putting aside age, status and political differences to unite to liberate their home land, Owo, in Ondo State, Nigeria from poor health situation. Men   and women were all dressed in resplendent white Yoruba traditional attires, with the men adorning caps and traditional mufflers to match. The women too wore their native buba and iro, with headgears to match. In the background, giant hifi speakers blared Owo traditional music.

The occasion was the national convention and medical fund raiser, organised for the ancient town of Owo. The programme titled “Bringing Hope and Health to Owo Kingdom,” by the World Council of Owo Associations, (WOCOA) USA, had sons and daughters of the ancient kingdom across the length and breadth of the United States of America in attendance.

Venue was Hotel Inn, 3400 Rider Trail South , Earth City, St Louis in Missouri, and the deliberation bothered on how to move the ancient tow of Owo forward in terms of providing health facilities and assisting people with medical needs back home.

Presidents of the different chapters that attended include, Femi Obajolu the president of Egbe Omo Owo, Maryland / Washington, Gani Olabode president of Owo Made International Club, Dallas, Olusola Kasali, president Of Owo Association in Houston,  Akin Ogunbodede president of Owo Made Progressive Association in New York, Emmanunel Olaleye, president from Atlanta Georgia, and Cecilia Ademisoye head California,  Shola Olanitori of Owo Heritage Club in Alabama, Gani Obanigba, president Owo Progressive Association, Missouri.

Prince Wilson Ojomo, who was master of ceremony, said the convention is held every two years and rotated among the cities. The reason for the convention, he said, is “to give back to our society too by assisting them in the health sector. Two years ago we organised African Women Cancer Awareness and brought some medical doctors and nurses from America here to Owo, Ondo State for seven days to treat them, while many surgeries were performed like breast cancer, goiter, hernia, cataract among others. In fact, we rescued many who could have died due to lack of money.”

Continuing, Ojomo said,  “We in America try to remember where we came from and we know there are many medical facilities here in America than at home, so we have to give back to our .”

President of Owo Association (St.Louis Chapter), Chief Otunba Gani Obanigba, described the convention as hope, and gave reason for   the fund raising. He said, “We know that self-help is the best; we also know that if you do not ask for help, you stand less of a chance of getting it .That is why the fund raising is very important to our members. This 2018 National Convention is meant for Fund raising and bringing Hope and Health to Owo Kingdom”, he said.

The Ondo State governor, Arákùnrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu (SAN), himself a native of Owo, was special guest of honour. Represented by his Chief of Staff, Mr. Gbenga Ale, the governor, in his speech, applauded the initiative. Ale was in company of other government officials like Banji Alabi,  Boye Oyewumi and Raimi Olayiwola.

Akeredolu said, “The residents of the kingdom are looking forward to the life-saving mission and it is our prayer that nothing untoward will disrupt your plan. Your overall aims and objectives show that your temporary separation from home has not in any way taken away from you the time-tested, time-hallowed cultural values, ideals and the virtues of a typical Owo person. My idea of an Owo man is that of an individual who is culture-bound and attached to the norms and mores of the land. An Owo man is honest and forthright, open minded and truthful. He is not proud but can be tenacious in expounding the validity and constancy of universal truths…”

The governor added, “The fact that you are raising funds in support of Medicare in Owo this year is in all fours with a cardinal aspect of our programmers in Ondo State, which is Promotion of Accessible and Qualitative Healthcare and Social Service Delivery .The state is committed to making healthcare delivery very fast, affordable and of high standard.”

The Olowo of Owo, Oba (Dr.) D.V Folagbade Olateru- Olagbegi III (CFR) was represented by the Atunluse of Owo Kingdom, – Chief Rotimi Ibidapo. In his message, the Olowo said, “I am most delighted seeing Owo indigenes abroad coming together in love and unity, pooling resources together and ready to assist people at home, not minding their hard-earned money. I pray May God continue to enrich your purse and bless you abundantly. You have been making Owo  proud, and I am glad. I wish others emulate you. I am glad.”

The Olunaun of Unaun, Oba Olanrewaju Abegunde described the occasion as great. He said, “The news of the programme spread all over Owo and America, thus bringing our children abroad together once again. The programme was adjudged one of the best thing that has ever happened to Owo indigenes in Diaspora.”

Dr. Bode Ogunleye, who was the chief launcher, delivered a lecture on cancer. He said many factors are responsible for cancer. “Last year in Owo, during a medical check-up on our natives, out of 7,000 medical tests carried out on the natives, about 26 people were diagnosed with cancer. The common one is breast cancer among women, though the males also have breast cancer but not as rampant and pronounced as the women.”

Ogunleye therefore counselled that the people “need cancer education; we need to educate the masses, for there is value in detecting it early. That is why we need screening programme.”

The national president of the association, Idris Adeniseun in his address, said “all the sons and daughters of Owo met in LaGrange, Georgia to address the issues and map out lasting peace in the ancient city of Owo. Consequently, all the sons and daughters of Owo in the various associations, clubs and organisations, in our respective local chapters under this umbrella residing in America now extending to Canada, do hereby solemnly resolve and form an organisation known to promote unity, peace and progression in Owo, World Council of Associations, USA. Inc. We believe that collectively, we can contribute more to the goal of developing Owo at a stronger and faster pace than by our individual effort alone. Therefore we affirm to promote the general welfare of our people at home and abroad all over the world.”

Mrs. Kemi Olabode described the occasion as unique and long hoped for. She said, “It is not enough for us to put on our white caps and headgears in the United States of America but we should assist the people at home. I am appealing to other natives here in America to join WOCOA. We don’t gain anything from it but love. Many don’t have parents anymore at home but still contribute to the town because of love. “Modesola Ojomo and Samson Adekunle – Obanigba described the occasion as highly successful. They chorused: “It is a big opportunity to assist the needy. We must rise to the occasion and do all we can to salvage Owo”.

The Atunluse of Owo Kingdom, High Chief Rotimi Ibidapo and his wife, Chief Remilekun Ibidapo donated money to the programme. According to Ibidapo, the occasion is highly expected: “I believe we have to contribute our own quota to our source.

Helen Famuwagun, who is WOCOA Social Secretary said, “We need to assist humanity. We need to contribute to the development of Owo our hometown especially in health.”

In his goodwill message, the Olunaun of Unaun, Prince Lanre Abegunde described the occasion as great, he said “though I could not make it to the United States, I pray for the success of the programme.”

Samson Adekunle, who said he has lived in the USA 30 years, said “whether we like it or not we will still go back home, so why not contribute to the health facilities at home because it is not everybody that has access to medical facilities abroad.”

In support of Adekunle, Gboyega Aruwajoye said “We need not only be assisting people at home financially but also we should build up the health facilities and support them. We cannot leave it for government alone.”

The National Coordinator of ‘Owo is One Movement,’ Chief Akin Aruwajoye said, “We believe that the development of our land and our people requires our collective effort. There is a huge infrastructural deficit to meet modern day living in our area. Government alone will not be able to provide it all. The contribution of all of us is important.”

To complete the homely atmosphere, Owo cultural dance and songs was on display, with Owo children abroad dancing excitedly and members spraying dollars in appreciation.

Among those present at the occasion are American medical doctors, Dr and Mrs Calvin Williams, Mr and Mrs Jimi Adetula who donated generously among others. Others are Mrs. Cathe Abitogun, Mrs. Taiwo Olagbegi-Olora, Prince Modesola Ojomo, Dr.  Olayiwola Olagbegi, Bayo Ogunmolawa, Femi Obajolu, Gani Olabode, Emmanuel Olabanji Ogunleye, Kofoworola Osun ( of African Palace ), Chief Gboyega Aruwajoye, Pastor Niyi Aruwajoye,  Kehinde Olagbegi-Osikoya, Bayo Ogunmolawa, Femi Obajolu, Mrs. Olayemi Ogunrayeiwa, Pastor Femi Omiye, Ifedayo Kayode, Lobo Agaun, and host of others.

  • Students tackle SARS over colleague’s death

The  Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) is in the eye of the storm again. Students of Rufus Giwa Polytechnic in Owo (RUGIPO) in Ondo State are calling for the disbandment of the outfit, following the death of their final year Accounting colleague, Seun Ogunmola, in a road crash.

The late Seun and his classmate, Deborah Iyanuoluwa, allegedly had the accident while being pursued by SARS operatives in Owo town. They sustained multiple injuries after the Toyota Matrix saloon car they were driving crashed near Owo Technical College. They were said to have been mistaken for Internet fraudsters by the SARS operatives.

Seun died on Sunday at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Owo, 11 days after the accident. CAMPUSLIFE gathered that the student gave up the ghost few hours after his leg was operated upon.

According to eyewitnesses, the students lost control of the car. After the accident, the officers reportedly abandoned them and fled the scene. The victims were rushed to the FMC by passersby.

It was learnt that the car belonged to the president of the off-campus hostel where the late Seun stayed.

CAMPUSLIFE could not confirm Deborah’s  condition as at press time. A close friend, who did not want her name in print, said she had been transferred to a private hospital in her Okitipupa hometown in Ondo State on her parents’ instructions after being confirmed to have been pregnant.

She is said to be the late Seun’s girlfriend. According to the late Seun’s friend, Dada Samuel, his condition worsened when the injury on his left leg affected the right one, warranting a surgery.

His friends and family members, CAMPUSLIFE learnt, sought help from the public to pay the N300,000 demanded by the hospital for the surgery.

Dada said the late Seun underwent the surgery last Friday to prevent the amputation of his legs. His classmates, he said, were already contributing money for another surgery when he died.

The news of Seun’s death sparked a protest. Students trooped to the highway to demand the SARS’ disbandment.

The protesters described SARS as “official killer squad”, while chanting anti-police songs.

They demonstrated in front of the school’s main gate, with placards bearing inscriptions, such as “END SARS”, “Human rights abuses thrive in Nigeria”, “Police must fish out the killer-SARS”, “Nigeria now has official killer squad in the Police Force”, “Justice for the late Seun Ogunmola and Deborah Iyanuoluwa”, and “IGP must stop SARS before they kill all of us”, among others.

The protesters barricaded the highway leading to the institution for hours.

The students condemned a statement credited to the Area Commander in Owo, Friday Eboka, an Assistant Commission of Police (ACP), alleging that there was no proof that those who chased the victims were SARS operatives.

Eboka, in a meeting with students’ representatives on Sunday, asked them to provide “authentic evidence” to show SARS operatives’ involvement in the incident. The police chief  promised to investigate the matter and implored students to set up a committee that would serve as intermediary between them and the police during the probe.

The protesters alleged that the police were yet to visit the victims’ families, describing the police action as irresponsible.

It was gathered that an officer of the Students’ Affairs Department, Mr Nelson Oloko, stopped the protesters from taking the demonstration to the police division in the town to prevent it from being hijacked by hoodlums.

Oloko praised the students for their peaceful conduct, urging them to exercise restraint while demanding justice for their late colleague. The students insisted they wanted an end to SARS operation in the town.

The protesters, in response to Oloko’s address, said they did not want SARS operatives to visit the campus and their hostels around the school. They said there could be a clash between them  if any SARS officer was found around their hostels.

The students said the protest was to express their grievances against SARS because of the circumstance of Seun’s death.

CAMPUSLIFE gathered that the school paid the N110,000 balance of the N300,000 charged for the late Seun’s surgery. His friends and family members contributed N190,000. It could not be ascertained if the school contributed to Deborah’s treatment.

A protester, Peter Ademulegun, said: “The actions of SARS operatives are abnormal. They usually come to our hostels to harass us and call us criminals. They were mandated to go after armed robbers, but they come to students’ hostels to arrest us on the excuse that they are looking for Yahoo Yahoo boys (Internet fraudsters).”

The victims’ class representative, Femi Odipe, said the late Seun had multiple fractures on his leg while Deborah sustained bruises on her head and arm.

He said: “It is tragic to hear that Seun, my bosom friend and a course mate, is dead. I was expecting he would recuperate faster after the successful surgery on Friday. The doctor asked us to make a payment of N300,000 only for his surgery, which we tried to gather from every source and we were able to make the payment last week.

“After the surgery, I visited him and I personally spoke to him. He showed signs of recovery, until Sunday afternoon when I got a call that Seun could not breathe properly and was placed on oxygen cylinder. He gave up the ghost this afternoon and the body has been taken to the mortuary.”

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr Femi Joseph, could not be reached for comment.

CAMPUSLIFE gathered that the late Seun will be buried in his Igbara-Odo hometown in Ekiti State. There will also be a candlelight procession on the campus in his honour.

He said: “Today, we have proven that we are responsible and reliable leaders. We have also demonstrated uncommon diligence in leadership and prudence in management of the students’ resources for greater and efficient impact on them.

“We have consolidated the tradition of using the resources of students for the benefit of greatest number of them with the strong hope that the succeeding generation of leaders would radically deliver on the same objectives we have set in motion.”

The union president, who described himself as “an unrepentant apostle of 21st Century purpose-driven leadership”, said he kept faith in those who would come after him to demonstrate greater capacity to facilitate projects that will give students unforgettable experience in the school.

The centre was naamed after a member of the polytechnic’s Governing Council, Jide Ipinshagba.

Explaining why the centre was named after Ipinshagba, the union leader said his “warm acceptance” and “generous donation” by the honoree necessitated the union to name the edifice after the council member.

The union supplied snooker, furniture and games to ensure the centre attracts students. Temitayo also hailed the rector, Mr Idowu Ologunagba, and council members for supporting the project, adding that the school would continue to enjoy students’ goodwill.

While inuagurating the project, Governing Council chairman, Mr Banji Alabi, and Ologunagba praised the gesture of the union and its Welfare Director, Ayodele Ogunbodede, an HND II Science and Laboratory Technology student, who solely donated a water tank to the institution.

Ayodele said he embarked on the project in fulfillment of his campaign promise to help occupants of Blocks F and G in the school hostel facing challenges in getting water.

Alabi said the donors’ actions were in line with the council’s spirit to take the institution to the highest level. The council chairman urged students to emulate donors gesture, stressing that man‘s essence is to serve humanity.

Ologunagba said: “I am elated by the projects. This is coming on board at the time we are coming out of crisis; it is signaling that a new dawn has arrived.”

He assured that donor that the water tank would be officially appreciated by the school, adding: “If others emulate this gesture, the institution would go a long way in improving welfare of students and make it first among its equals.”

  • Ondo flags off ‘School on the Ridges’ scheme.

Ondo State Governor, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu on Wednesday flagged of ‘ School on the Ridges programme’ tagged ‘Agricbusiness’ for secondary schools in Ondo State.

At the event, thousands of cashew and oil palm seedlings were distributed to secondary school students.

Flagging off the programme tagged: ‘Schools at Oyemekun Grammar School, Akure, Akeredolu, who was represented by the state Commissioner for Agriculture, Otunba Adegboyega Adefarati, said the programme became necessary to redirect the psyche of the students aimed at making agriculture a money-making venture.

He urged students from the nine schools selected from the three senatorial districts in the state for the flagg-off to key into the programme with seriousness.

The Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to the governor on Agriculture and Agribusiness, Akin Olotu noted that agribusiness was introduced to discourage the belief that poor people go into agriculture.

He said one hectare was set aside by each of the overall 90 schools selected for the programme

Olotu informed the students of the importance of agriculture and the new dimension to the business which is currently at low ebb in the country.

The agric expert revealed that post-primary school students are being encouraged to see agric as another veritable and lucrative means of generating revenue.

According to him, the programme was designed to prepare the students towards doing business outside the classroom.

He urged teachers to desist from using agriculture as punitive measure in instilling discipline in students, noting that this always undermined the psyche of students in seeing agriculture as a good venture.

Olotu disclosed that the flag-off is the Phase I of the programme which has been segmented into three phases.

He added that schools would use the programme as a means of generating revenue in addition to subventions being received from government.

Oyemekun Grammar School, Stephen Ojo said what the schools needed was encouragement and support by the government in entrenching modern agriculture in secondary schools in the state.

He charged the state government to make the programme a mechanized one, saying most students don’t have the strength to practice the old cutlass and hoe system of farming.

Olotu however assured that the Ondo State Agribusiness and Development Centre would appoint monitoring officers to supervise the projects in each of the participating schools to ensure survival of the seedlings.

Stakeholders at the even were led to the already cleared farmland by where they planted the Brazilian species of cashew seedlings brought by the state Ministry of Agriculture for distribution.

  • Ekiti made right choice in Fayemi, says Rep

A member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Stephen Olemija, has said the people of Ekiti State made the right choice in electing Dr. Kayode Fayemi as the governor-elect.

Olemija, who is a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Campaign Council for the Ekiti governorship election, said the Fountain of Knowledge will witness unprecedented development under Fayemi’s watch.

The lawmaker representing Akoko Northeast/Akoko Northwest Federal Constituency of Ondo State in a congratulatory message to Fayemi made available to The Nation on Wednesday said Ekiti will the governor-elect’s track record and experience in governance.

Olemija called on Fayemi to run an all-inclusive administration to fast-track real development in Ekiti for the people of the state to enjoy dividends of democracy which he claimed eluded them under Fayose.

He commended the people of Ekiti for their support for Fayemi and steadfastness in enthroning good governance in order to link the state with the league of progressives in the Southwest in particular and Nigeria in general.

Olemija said Fayemi’s victory will further strengthen relationship between two sister states of Ekiti and Ondo which he said share many things in common.

“Ekiti and Ondo States share many things in common, therefore, the coming together of the two states under the same political banner of the All Progressives Congress (APC) will no doubt speed up intra-infrastructural development and promote their economic prosperity,” he said.

Olemija said further: “Dr Fayemi remains an astute administrator and a politician of note, who knows where the shoe pinches an average common man of Ekiti State, the reason why Ekiti people came out en masse during the July 14 election to vote for him as their preferred candidate.

“It is to say the least that, Ekiti people have made the right decision in electing Dr. Fayemi and APC over Mr. Fayose, his stooge, Prof. Olusola and PDP, the camp that has put Ekiti into penury and hardship in almost four years of its reign.

“There is no doubt that, Ekiti State is in a dire need of urgent attention to redefine its image among the comity of states in Nigeria due to the way the current and outgoing governor, Mr. Fayose, had bastardize its image and turned the state into a laughing stock in the country.

“Core values, integrity, decorum and political tolerance have been replaced with lies, unreasonable propaganda, publicity stunt, fraud, cosmetic and self-serving projects and unnecessary vituperation to gain cheap attention from the public.

“Ekiti people, like other states in the Southwest, are known for truthfulness, sincerity, respect and forthrightness, hence the need for Dr. Fayemi to urgently redefine the status of the state again to continue to earn more respect and accolade in and outside the country.”
