    Ondo students get parliament

New leaders of the National Association of Ondo Students (NAOSS) have been inaugurated.

The event took place at the NAOSS Secretariat on Ilesa Road, Akure, the state capital.

Speaking at the event, Chairman of the scholarship board Mr Dayo Awude said he was happy to be in the students’ midst.

“I encourage this newly inaugurated Senate to be more pro-active and progressive in its parliamentary resolutions so as to contribute its quota to the development of the state,” he stated.

He reiterated his commitment to students’ welfare, adding that he would always listen to the demands of students.

The Special Assistant to the Governor on Youths, Mr Tayo Adenikinju, praised the leadership of the new Senate for their maturity in tackling challenges, pledging his support to the Senate.

The Senate President, Fagbemigun Israel, from the Obafemi Awolowo University, said the students would play their role in contributing to the development of the state.

“The Senate has not come to witch-hunt any executive, but will not tolerate any iota of administrative negligence or irresponsibility from its executive. All acts capable of tarnishing the name of the association will be duly checked and punishment will be placed where needed.” He added.

Israel expressed his readiness to work with the State Government in the interest of students, saying that the welfare of students would be primary in his agenda.

The second phase of the event took place in the official lodge of Governor Femi Mimiko, where the senate paid a congratulatory visit to the governor on the announcement of the new federal polytechnic to be located at Ile-Oluji. The Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on youth, Evangelist Olumuyiwa Asagunla, received the delegation.

  • Death trap as federal road in Ondo

Death trap as federal road in Ondo

One of the federal roads in Ondo State linking the Southwest to Abuja, the federal capital, is more of a death trap than a good passage for motorists. DAMISI OJO reports.

Travelling to Abuja from Lagos through Ondo State is now more of a danger to motorists as the Ipele – Idoani – Isua – Kabba – Abuja highway, one of the two major link roads to the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), from the southwest is in a terrible shape.

The road, one of the federal roads in the state begging for attention is not only in a deplorable state but is also littered with trailers and other heavy duty trucks trapped on the bad portions of the highway, thereby adding to the danger faced by other motorists who manage to navigate the potholes and other failed portions of the road.

Any traveler particularly between Idoani in Ose local government and  Isua, Akoko Southeast local government area of Ondo State would witness how chains of trailers are trapped for days and weeks on this road.

Unfortunately, these heavy duty trucks prefer this road because it is devoid of steeply hills, dangerous slopes and sharp bends.

This is unlike the deadly Akungba – Oka route with dangerous points, specifically Oke – Oka hill, Okia-Oka deadly slope and the deadly sharp bends at the end of the slope, where hundreds of people had met their untimely death.

A visit to the area by “The Nation” revealed that most heavy duty trucks ascending the Oka hill usually roll back as a result of their inability to climb the hill causing serious accident resulting in damage to life and properties.

Likewise, trailers, descending the Oka-Okia long slope with a sharp bend at the end  usually lose control due to brake failure killing dozens of other road users.

Records at Oka and Iwaro police stations confirm thousands of lives that had been lost on that road.

The deplorable condition of the Ipele route which is presently cut-off and out of use at Ifira – Sosan – Isua Akoko has forced trucks to divert to the dangerous Akungba – Oka route, causing serious havoc to cars and buses.

A road user and public analyst, Mr Olasehinde Idowu blamed the federal and Ondo state governments for abandoning this important road which is a gate way from the southwest to the  East and Abuja, the seat of the federal government.

According to him, both Ondo State and Federal governments should note that the cost of abandoning Ipele – Kabba – Abuja Road project is the precious lives and properties that are being lost on Akungba -Oka route on a daily basis.

He lamented that the refusal of the Federal Government to repair the road in the last 20 years  has portrayed the insensitivity of the government to the pains of the people.

Idowu noted that some trailers also divert through Idoani – Idogun – Ipesi – Ifira to Isua to avoid the bad spots on Ipele road thereby causing serious damage to this trunk B road belonging to Ondo State government.

One of the political office holders in Ose local government who spoke in confidence said the number of lives that had been lost to road accident on Oka – Okia hill and slope outnumber those lost to the Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDs) that we spend billions of naira to control.

He queried the rationale behind the failure of both federal and state government to repair the Ipele Road to prevent further killings on the popular Akungba – Oka route, stressing that Ipele route is more suitable for heavy trucks.

Officials of the Federal Ministry of works and Federal Roads Maintenance Agency(FERMA) said the road is not on the priority list, but added that efforts were on to ensure that federal government pays attention to it as a good alternative to Akungba-Oka Akoko-Isua-Abuja route.

A top government official at the State Ministry of Works who also spoke in confidence said the road in question belongs to the federal government.

He however said the dwindling state allocation has not assisted in focusing on such gigantic project, noting that this would have been worthwhile especially for the mere fact that it is the citizenry of Ondo State that are making use of the road mostly.

This is coming two months after lawyers started boycotting courts over the circular.

The circular insisted on production of tax clearance as a compulsory pre-condition for bail of accused persons standing trial.

The decision was reached at the end of the meeting called by the CJ at Judges’ Recreation Centre, Alagbaka, Akure with leaders of the NBA in the state.

Members of the Bar also agreed to suspend the two months old boycott of Courts.

  • ‘Merger of Ondo oil communities justifiable’

Controversies over a suspected planned merger of communities in the oil producing Ilaje local government area of Ondo state have continued to linger on.

The youths of the area have consequently charged the state government and security agencies to guard against breakdown of law and order in the communities.

Apart from this, the people have also urged the state government not to succumb to the alleged threats and blackmail of some people in the area over the merger processes, saying the move should be pursued to a logical conclusion.

The Chairman,Mahin-Aheri-Etikan (Ilaje) Youth Congress,Nelson Ololajulo and the Secretary, Babalola Solomon, condemned the recent protest embarked upon by some section of Ugbo Youths.

According to them, the protests and the comments by some Ugbo youths over the merger plan was regrettable and uncalled for as what Chevron Nigeria Limited had demanded for was for administrative convenience of the area.

The Ilaje youths however noted that the sponsors of the protests were people that had fraudulently benefited from exploration activities in the area to the detriment of the larger society.

The group argued that those behind the protest were a local cabal that wanted to prevent accountability for the funds that had been remitted by the oil company for the development of the oil producing areas of the state.

They said, “Conscious of our place and position as a people accounting for the larger population and territory of Ilaje without whose territory there is no access to Ugbo land and whose land is used for reclamation and sand filing for the infrastructural development of the whole of Ugbo kingdom.

“We shall in the interest of Ilaje common kindred spirit, treat the empty sound and fury of threats as the usual tale. In the interest of security and peaceful co-existence of all our people and smooth business operations in Ilaje land, we only wish to enjoin all our leaders across Ilaje land,

the Ondo state government, security agencies to warn those behind these

careless utterances and behaviours to desist.”

The group said as oil producing people, they are keenly watching Chevron, the Ondo State Government and its agencies in their treatment of all parties and strongly advised them against succumbing to the empty threats and blackmail by any group of Ilaje, adding that they should be fair to all.

In specific terms, the youths insisted that all payments due to Ilaje from the offshore operations be paid into an escrow account, while all forms of empowerment benefits and contracts be evenly distributed across the entire coastline of Ilaje adding that the merger process be concluded without further delay.

  • ‘Call for merger of Ondo oil communities selfish’

‘Call for merger of Ondo oil communities selfish’

The desperation of some politicians to either become chairman of Ondo State Oil Producing Area Development Commission (OSOPADEC) or Commissioner representing the State on the board of Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has been identified as the driving force behind the recent agitation by Mahin, Aheri and Etikan Communities to be merged with Ugbo land.

According to Ugbo communities through the Chairman, Ilaje Ugbo Think Tank Group, Mr Henry Agbude, it was the act that established the OSOPADEC and NDDC that gave the people of Ugbo Kingdom the preference above other kingdoms in Ilaje Local Government to occupy the positions being the only oil producing kingdom in the state as at now.

He said it was this law that has over the time stirred up envy among desperate politicians from Mahin, Aheri and Etikan axis who have been eyeing the plumb positions for many years.

According to him, the same agitation came up during the tenures of late Chief Adebayo Adefarati and Dr. Olusegun Agagu as Governors of Ondo State but collapsed because it was laced with self interest, greed and inordinate ambition.

He noted that Governor Olusegun Mimiko has also seen the truth that non oil producing communities cannot be merged with oil producing communities saying that is why the merger related crisis has been lingering for almost two years now.

Agbube said it was Ilaje Ugbo Communities that signed the General Memorandum of Understanding (GMOU) with the Chevron Nigeria (CNL), advising that the people of Mahin, Etikan and  Aheri should enter into their own discussion with the company first before knowing the next step to take.

According to him “the Communities in Mahin, Aheri and Etikan axis have no GMOU with CNL.

What Ugbo People are saying is that Mahin, Aheri and Etikan should first enter into GMOU with CNL in order to confirm their oil producing status”,

The group also urged the merger agitators to approach relevant government agencies that give recognition to communities as oil producing ones and prove their eligibility for recognition.

It said the idea of gaining recognition from the back door through merger of the communities would not work.

“If Mahin, Aheri and Etikan should hinge the basis of their offshore recognition on the fact that they share the same coastline with Ugbo Kingdom,  they should be informed as well that the same coastline extend to Ogun and Lagos states, therefore the reason for the agitation is not

    enough” The statement stressed..

The chairman accused some government functionaries of being the brain behind the merger agitation.

He therefore called on CNL to continue its relationship with Ilaje Ugbo Coastal Communities Development (IUCCDC). The chairman also called on the Ondo State Government of Ondo State to also see the insistence of Mahin  Aheri, and Etikan’s call for Pan merger as an action that is capable of causing crisis.

  • Ondo lawmaker, contractor trade words over attack

Ondo lawmaker, contractor trade words over attack

Confusion reigned at the Ondo State House of Assembly complex, Igbatoro Road, Akure, the Ondo State capital, at the weekend when a contractor handling projects at the complex, Mr Obayoriju Abass, was assaulted by some youths suspected to be political thugs loyal to one of the lawmakers.

The youths were said to have stormed an office in the complex during a meeting summoned by the Assembly Tenders Committee chaired by the lawmaker representing Owo Constituency 1, Ayo Arowele.

Sources said the contractor’s offence was that he argued with members of the committee during the meeting.

Arowele’s clothes were torn to shreds after he was pushed out of the meeting.

It was gathered that Obayoriju’s attack may not be unconnected with his interest in contesting in 2015 the position Arowele is occupying.

Obayoriju, who spoke with reporters, alleged that he was assaulted by Arowele at the meeting.

He said|: “I went to a meeting summoned by the tender’s committee but I was surprised that despite the fact that I answered the questions the committee asked me correctly, I was asked to shut up by Arowele and in the process of trying to defend myself, he slapped me.

“He later instructed his thugs to walk me out of the meeting. One of his thugs tore my clothes and slapped me repeatedly.

“I think what Arowele and his boys did to me is something that should not be allowed to go without reporting to the appropriate quarters. Such attack is barbaric and uncalled for.”

Obayoriju, who has reported the matter to the police, threatened to sue the lawmaker, saying: “I will not hesitate to drag Arowele to court because what he did to me is primitive.”

He also called on the police to investigate the matter.

Arowele denied the allegation, describing it as a cooked-up story designed to dent his image. He added that there was no truth in the allegation levelled against him.

He said: “We asked him some questions pertaining to the jobs he had handled in the Assembly and instead of addressing the issue, he insulted committee members at the meeting. I never assaulted him in any form.”

Ondo riverine residents to benefit from NDDC health scheme

About 5,000 people in the riverine area of Ondo State are to benefit from the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) free health programme.

The state’s representative on the Governing Board of NDDC, Mr Amuwa Benson, spoke with  reporters in Akure, the state capital, at the weekend.

He said the programme would kick-off before the end of this month. Amuwa said Igbekebo and Zion-Pepe have been chosen as centres for the programme.  He said the exercise was part of the commission’s responsibility to the oil-producing communities.

Amuwa said: “It is responsibility of the commission to bring qualitative health services to the doorstep of the people in the mandate area and that is why the commission has chosen Igbekebo and Zion-Pepe as meeting points for the programme. Our target covers those with minor and severe ailments because health is wealth”.

  • Nembe slam Ondo match officials

GLO Premier League side, Nembe City have labeled Thursday’s Federation Cup match officials from Ondo State as killed joy.

The City Boys lost to the Cup defending champions, Enyimba Int’l 1-2 inside the Akure Township stadium as they bowed out of this year competition in the Round of 16.

The set of match officials appointed by the Ondo State FA were woeful as they handed victory to the Aba side.

Awofeari S.O was appointed the center referee, Awosaki I.O and Raji K.T were assistant referees while FIFA Badge referee, Henry Ogunyamodi was the reserve referee.

“At Nembe City its not our style to complain about officiating after a game, but the devilish act from the Ondo State referees was annoying, media officer of the City Boys, Gbenga Adeleye told Naijasportscentre.com.

“They were killed joy, even disappointed their profession. Football should be a fair game but so sad the referees are not helping our game to grow.

“After the game one of our players told me the referee said he is not aware they are playing a big team? What does that speak about our referees,” Adeleye queried.

  • We’ll shut Chevron operation in Ilaje, Ondo communities threaten

We’ll shut Chevron operation in Ilaje, Ondo communities threaten

SECURITY operatives in Ondo State have been placed on alert over the ultimatum given by the host oil communities to Chevron Nigeria Limited.

The communities had written separate letters to the oil giant and the state governor, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, through Ilaje Ugbo coastal Communities Development Committee (IUCCDC) dated June 30 and July 7.

They gave the company an 11-day ultimatum to pay their outstanding benefits or vacate the land.

In the letters signed by the Chairman of Council of Baales, Ugbo land, Chief Oyetomi Andrew; the secretary, Chief Asunmaga Abayomi; youth leader, Nana Adedeji and Chairman, Ilaje Patriots, Comrade Aganyebi Kosieda, they threatened to shut down the operation of the company in the region at the expiration of the ultimatum if their demands are not met.

The communities called on Mimiko to intervene in the matter in order to prevent crisis.

They decried what they described as the “unholy alliance” of some officials of the state government with Chevron, which they noted was detrimental to their agitation.

IUCCDC urged Chevron to commence the immediate payment of three years scholarship for their indigenes as stipulated in their Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and relate appropriately with authorised association that represents the interest of the oil communities in the state.

Ondo indigenes in Osun urged to vote for Aregbesola

The indigenes of Ondo State resident in Osun State have been charged to come out enmasse and vote  for  Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola in his re-election bid as  governor in the August 9  governorship poll.

Hon. Ifedayo Sunday Abegunde, representing the Akure North and South Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, gave the charge after a tour of 30 local governments by the Oranmiyan Sunshine Movement to rally support of all Ondo indigenes residing in the state for Aregbesola’s re-election.

Abegunde said he could foresee Aregbesola winning the election because he had done alot for the state.

He said: “Aregbesola has given a sence of belonging to  every Ondo indigene within the state through his innovative policies and programmes.

He reminded them of their numerical strenght, therefore, saying their votes are very important in the coming election.

Also, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress in Ondo State and co-ordinator, Oranmiyan Sunshine Movement, Hon. Saka Yussuf Ogunleye, said Aregbesola’s popularity confirmed that he performed creditably.

Ogunleye, who noted that despite the low Internal Generated Revenue (IGR) of the state compared to Ondo State where he comes from, Aregbesola has achieved more than Governor Olusegun Mimiko.
