‘Akinterinwa, a man propelled to champion public good’

The Convener of the Ondo State Chapter of the South West Youths for Good Governance, Yomi Alarape, has described a former Commissioner of Finance in the state, Wale Akinterinwa, a man propelled by a burning desire to champion public good.

Alarape, who said this while briefing reporters in Abuja on Monday, backed the former finance commissioner for the guber race in the state.

He said, “Like the legendary writer George Orwell noted in his famous classic, ‘Animal Farm,’ leadership is not a pleasure but a deep and heavy responsibility. Those motivated to serve are not driven by the quest for fame but by the desire to make life suitable for others.

“Wale Akinterinwa, former Commissioner of Finance in Ondo State is a man propelled by a burning desire to champion public good.

“Events of the past few months culminating in the death of the immediate past Governor Rotimi Akeredolu call for sober reflection.

“In Akeredolu, Ondo lost not just a leader but a man whose entire life was devoted to service and the progress of not just the State and the South-West but the nation at large.

“As a people united in purpose for the good of all, it is imperative to prepare for the task ahead with a firm resolve to walk the path of peace, diligence and greatness.

“Akinterinwa, the quintessential financial wizard, chartered accountant and a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) is offering himself to service Nigerians of Ondo State extraction.

“And ahead of the April 2024 primary election of the APC, it is only imperative that a man who has given his all for the party is backed by all and sundry to serve the State at the highest level.

“The Governorship election is scheduled by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for September 2024. No doubt, prominent Ondo indigenes are already indicating interest in the exalted but challenging office.

“Akinterinwa, a tax expert, hails from Oke-Igbo/lle Oluji Local Government Area of the State.

“In a demonstration of sheer human empathy, Akinterinwa kept faith in Akeredolu throughout the period of his medical challenges. He sought the face of God and urged others to do same in a bid to have the ex- Governor return to his seat, hale and hearty.

“The same cannot be said of others who unable to hide their true inclinations, started plotting their scheme even though Akeredolu was still alive. Ondo people have a choice to make.

“As for the APC, the choice is theirs to make too. The party knows the importance of loyalty and integrity. Both are symbolized by Akinterinwa in more ways than one.

“As a stakeholder in Ondo State, I call on the party and the people to rally round the man who means well for all of us,” he said.

Ill-health stalls trial of Ondo monarch over alleged impersonation

An Ondo State High Court sitting in Okitipupa has adjourned the hearing of the case of impersonation brought against Prince Ademola Olowoyibiri who was, last year, installed as the Olufon of Irele kingdom.

The presiding judge, Justice T.M Adedipe, declined after further hearing of the case due to the absence of Prince Olowoyibiri.

Prince Olowoyibiri was arraigned last year for illegally parading himself as a traditional ruler.

He was alleged to have unlawfully assumed the chieftaincy title of Olofun of Irele contrary to and punishable under section 516 of the Criminal Code Laws of Ondo state.

Oloworiyibi reportedly permitted himself to be installed as well as parading themselves in royal regalia without the approval of the Ondo State Executive Council and in contravention of section 15(1) and (2) of the Chiefs Law of Ondo State.

Six chiefs who were alleged to be responsible for Oloworiyibi’s ascension as Olofun of Irele were also docked.

They are Ebielemi Akintola, Orukotan Fadayomi, Akiyesi Owoloye, Adebayo Olowoboye, Olosusi Mesagan and Igbekele Olajide.

They were charged on two counts charge of conspiracy and illegal installation of a monarch without government approval.

At the resumed hearing of the case Thursday, the prosecuting counsel, H.M. Falowo urged the court to go on with the proceeding since all parties were present.

Counsel to the defendant, Adewale Mosadomi supported Falowo and urged the court to take their pleadings despite the absence of Olowoyibiri due to ill health.

Justice Adedipe said he could not take their pleadings due to the absence of the defendant.

He ordered Olowoyibiri to present his medical report as proof of ill health at the next hearing.

The Judge warned Olowoyibiri’s followers to maintain peace in their domain and adjourned the sitting to February 22nd, 2024.

Personal Assistant to Olowoyibiri Ode Adewale, had last year said the Irele customs do not require writing any letter to the government before picking a king.

He said: “We do not need to follow any process than to consult the oracle and anybody Ifa oracle picks, is who will be installed as the king. We have never done anything contrary to our customs.

“There are some petitions written to the government which have been causing problems. Three people who indicated interest wrote petitions to security agencies.

“We did not write any letter. We do it our way. The whole town will consult the Oracle, anybody picked will be crowned. We have done that. There was no obstruction to the process. We have done it and it is done.”

Youths beg ex-commissioner to join Ondo race

Youth groups across Ondo State have begged former Commissioner for Finance, Mr. Wale  Akinterinwa, to declare intention to contest the governorship election scheduled for November.

They urged Akinterinwa to declare his intention after the burial of ex-Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu.

The youth spoke at a solidarity rally/march held in Akure.

The rally moved through major streets of Akure.

Youths’ leader Prince Dapo Adepoju said the rally was to tell Akinterinwa that his track record was enough for him to lead Ondo State to the next level.

He said youths had made their choice by picking Akinterinwa.

Said he: “We are getting closer to the electioneering period in Ondo State and we as members of the All Progressives Congress (APC), particularly the youth wing, we believe that youths are the pillars in any state. We have consulted across the 18 local governments of the state within the progressives and we look at it that Mr. Wale Akinterinwa is the best man for the job.

“Akinterinwa served as the Commissioner for Finance during the administration of Dr. Olusegun Mimiko and honourably, he resigned his appointment.

“When President Bola Ahmed Tinubu came on board, he chose Akinterinwa from one of the few individuals across the 774 local governments that make up this country as one of the people that would rejig the economy as a member of the National Tax Reform Committee. These are the things we know and we believe he has the pedigree to lead this state.

“We feel he is the best person. We are appealing that he accepts our offer. We are appealing to our party leaders in the Southwest to help us appeal to Akinterinwa to accept our offer.”

Ondo 2024: Youths will get N5bn loan annually under my stewardship – Akintelure

A governorship aspirant of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo state, Paul Akintelure, has said youths in the state would get N5bn annually as a loan under his planned Graduate Entrepreneurship Scheme.

Akintelure, who declared his intention to run for governor at a media parley in Akure, said N5m each would be given annually to 1000 youths registered under the scheme.

Akintelure said 12,000 jobs would be created annually from the scheme.

He said the state would collaborate with the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) to ensure graduates from the state are posted to practical organizations in terms of skill acquisition.

Akintelure said his administration would pay additional allowance to youths from the state mobilised for the NYSC scheme.

He said: “My dream is to double the GDP of Ondo in my one year of administration. I am not a magician but I’m going to utilize the resources we have. I’m going to pay attention to agriculture in its full meaning. We are going to pay attention to what is called value addition in agriculture.

“We are also going to involve the youth. I’m going to involve youths in what I will call the Graduate Entrepreneurship Scheme. It won’t be limited to agriculture alone but it’s about whatever you want to do, whatever skill you prefer because we will take it to the National Youth Service Corps.

“We are also going to pay them money in addition to what NYSC will pay them. At the end of the year, we will invite them to defend the project and at the end of the day, we are going to earmark N5 million each for the N1,000 graduates and they are going to repay in 10 years. The loan will be interest-free. In other words, they’re going to refund 45,000 monthly.

“There is no government that can run without private sector involvement. So, we are going to ensure that civil servants benefit a lot from our government. We are going to introduce the Pensioners’ Retirement Self Employment Scheme. It will encourage people from level 14 and above, who are 55 years and above or 30 years in service to apply for voluntary retirement after completing training for six months.”

Akintelure said his knowledge of the plans, policies and programmes of President Bola Tinubu would enable a perfect synergy between the state and the federal government.

He said: “It will work in a way of transforming our natural resources. We have the best port sand in this country and that is why we need the glass industry. We are aware that most of these mineral resources are federal government owned but it is my synergy, relationship with the president that will see me through.”

  • Edo, Ondo polls signpost troubling future

Edo, Ondo polls signpost troubling future

Kogi State governor Usman Ododo has so far spoken and acted like someone undeserving of the office his predecessor and kinsman Yahaya Bello single-handedly gifted him. Everything about the new governor betrays his mindset: his wistful look, his unspeakable subservience to the former governor, his first set of appointments, his deferential statements. He will not be the first man to be imposed on a people, nor will he be the last. Those who claim to be his betters, such as ex-president Olusegun Obasanjo, had done much worse in imposing misfits and ruining whole destinies. There is indeed hardly any former governor not susceptible to the itch to aggregate to himself the interest of the state’s electorate. In nearly all the impositions, Nigeria has been worse for it. Now, a different kind of farcical electoral shenanigan is playing out in the governorship polls of Edo and Ondo States, for obviously no lessons have been learnt. The field is crowded in Edo State, which will be the first to have a go at imposition in September, and for the November Ondo poll, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, probably the most remorseless of governors, given the way he handled the illness of his predecessor, has a head start in an uninspiring field of aspirants.

Edo first, then. Governor Godwin Obaseki has no conception of loyalty or finesse. Nor does he care anything about ideology or fairness. He is a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) over which, in the Edo chapter, he has a tenuous hold as leader. He will first need to get his protégé elected in the primary poll slated for later this month, but will almost certainly head into the September poll with a fairly divided house, an unruly field of political and governorship hopefuls, and a hardly disguised preference for Asue Ighodalo, a corporate lawyer and investment banker. But then there is also Omoregie Ogbeide-Ihama from the Dan Orbih/Nyesom Wike PDP faction, and the cantankerous and sometimes disagreeable deputy governor, Philip Shaibu, who is determined to be a pain in the neck of Mr Obaseki. The governor won his second term exemplifying the state’s suspicion of the godfather phenomenon, an electoral tool deployed with devastating impact against ex-governor Adams Oshiomhole who denounced his leadership and backed Osagie Ize-Iyamu, a pastor. The governorship primaries in the PDP and APC are therefore expected to be keenly contested, but the victors are unlikely to underscore the beauty and independence of democratic practice in Nigeria.

The dynamics of the Ondo governorship APC primary is unusually different. With a less congested field, which appears more worrisome than Edo’s in terms of leadership capacity, the state may head for an anticlimax. Sen Jimoh Ibrahim is a powerful and wealthy aspirant, but he will have to move mountains to best the incumbent. In his reactions to the late governor Rotimi Akeredolu’s health crisis and eventual death last December, Mr Aiyedatiwa hardly put one foot right. He needed to be patient, circumspect, calculating, and even dissembling if the situation demanded. Instead, he spoke brusquely, displayed abrasive and grating manners, and came across as unfeeling and dismissive. Since assuming the governorship, his tactlessness has left many people squirming and bewildered. But, for a governor, patronage is a powerful tool, and the Ondo governor has won many officials and ordinary people to his side. It is nevertheless too early to determine whether he would win, for his opponents will match him in every department of the game. But incumbency, regardless of how long a governor has been in office, can be stifling and unnerving to any opponent.

Edo and Ondo, however, reinforce and exemplify Nigeria’s deeply flawed succession politics that keeps churning out misfits as local government, state, and federal administrators. The administrators may have flattering academic qualifications, but leadership is far more than academics, far more than loyalty, and far more than looks, eloquence and to some extent even charisma. Decades of focusing on wrong leadership yardsticks have worsened Nigeria’s existential challenges. There will always be global economic pressures triggering or exacerbating domestic economic crisis. And there will always be internal conflicts sometimes consequent upon warped constitutional arrangements and safeguards incapable of mediating ethnic, religious or regional suspicions and pressures. No part of the world is immune to such disharmonies and pressures. What makes the difference is the capacity of their leaders and perhaps too their imagination and boldness. There is nothing in the coming elections in Edo and Ondo that encourages the belief that prospective governors will be judged using the right yardsticks. In Ondo, a flawed Mr Aiyedatiwa schemes his relevance by positioning himself, against all scruples, and even before his benefactor is buried, to take advantage of the state’s desperate situation. And in Edo, the controversial and overhyped Mr Obaseki, who spoke glibly about democracy and denounced godfather politics when he campaigned for a second term, is now desperate to reproduce his kind, with scant attention paid to democratic practices. He believes his preferred candidate’s impressive CV should clinch the argument.

The succession battle raging in Rivers State between Mr Fubara and ex-governor Wike should serve as signal lesson to political leaders eager to impose successors. Nothing is ever guaranteed. Most states where succession was midwifed by meddlesome political leaders have ended in a cul de sac. But no one takes history lessons to heart, and as Ondo may yet prove, perhaps even those who will vote at the party primary as well as at the governorship election seem absolutely incapable of learning anything. The choices facing Edo may be less complicated than Ondo’s; but simple or complicated, the chances of producing first-rate leaders, when the outgoing leader is himself third-rate, is one in a million.

    Atiku, Makinde and Ibadan blast

A farcical drama played out in Ibadan last week when Governor Seyi Makinde, still smarting from the January 16 explosion in Ibadan, openly jousted with former vice president Atiku Abubakar over the latter’s lack of empathy for the people of Oyo state. Labour Party’s Peter Obi, a former presidential candidate, had visited the state to condole with Mr Makinde and Oyo people over the loss of lives and destruction of properties. The PDP’s former presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku, said the governor plaintively, had not deemed it fit to visit and commiserate.

The former vice president’s media aide, Paul Ibe, however, refuted the governor’s claims. Mr Makinde, a notable member of the famous G-5 was too busy minding other things, he said, to read the letter of sympathy published in the media and issued less than 24 hours after the blast. How the spokesman missed the inanity of his response is hard to say. Of course Alhaji Atiku’s statement was published in the media, but for a former vice president conversant with bureaucracy and officialdom, it is passing strange that he considered such impersonal methods adequate, let alone one a spokesman would openly boast about. Does vindictiveness not have a limit for Alhaji Atiku?

  • Ondo may postpone poll

    Ondo may postpone poll

There are indications that elections into the 18 local governments and 33 local council development areas may be postponed.

Ondo State Independent Electoral Commission (ODIEC) had fixed February 17, 2024 as the date to conduct the poll.

Sources said the local elections might be postponed due to the death of former Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu.

The sources said burial programme of Akeredolu would begin on February 15 and end on February 23 when the ex-governor would be buried.

Besides the burial of Akeredolu, another source said incumbent Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa might also push for the postponement to enable his loyalists emerge as candidates.

Primaries of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the local government election were conducted before the death of Akeredolu.

According to the sources, “the party primary is for April this year and the fear in Aiyedatiwa’s camp is that those candidates will not be loyal to him if they become local government chairmen.

“We are aware of plans to postpone the local government elections or a possibility of cancelling the entire process.”

ODIEC Chairman, Dr. Joseph Aremo, did not confirm whether the election would be postponed.

He said the commission was working out something and that he would soon brief stakeholders in the state on the outcome.

Spokesman for Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ondo State, Kennedy Peretei, said the February 17 date was no longer feasible for the conduct of the election.
