  • UPDATED: Seven killed in Ondo bank robbery

Armed bandits on Mondays killed seven persons in Ido-Ani, Ose local government area of Ondo state during a siege on the only commercial bank at Isewa quarters in the ancient community.

The robbery operation was said to have started around 2.00 pm and lasted for about one hour without any resistance.

At the end of the attack, five bank officials, a Vice Principal who was a customer and a police man reportedly fell to the bullets of the hoodlums who carted away undisclosed huge amount of money.

The robbers, it was learnt, drove a Sports Utility Vehicle to the

bank and went straight to the banking hall after using dynamites to blew off the security doors.

Sources said attempts were made to alert soldiers at Isua Akoko Military check point and police men from the vicinity but the robbers carried out their operation successfully before their arrival.

Also, it was learnt that a victim allegedly shot on the stomach was rushed to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Owo.

Others said to be on danger list were on admission at Ido-Ani General Hospital.

Sources hinted that one of bandits was however unlucky as he was caught by a vigilant soldier and thrown into police custody.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) Femi Joseph, a Superintendent of Police (SP), who confirmed the incident, said he could not give details of the incident as at press time.

Balogun of Ido-Ani, Chief Olatunji Oshati(Maxima) described the incident as too shocking.

He symphatised with the families of the deceased, urging appropriate authorities to beef up security in Ido-Ani and his environs.

Former Supervisor in Ose local government council, Hon. Isaac Obiniran, lamented he alerted security agents immediately the hoodlums invaded the town but the response was not timely.

  • Two new mini-grids for Ondo

THE electricity intervention scheme of Governor Oluwarotimi Akereduolu’s administration has received a boost with the completion and inauguration of the pilot of a scalable 45kw cabin-type mini-grid power project in Gbagira town in Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State.

Special Adviser to the Governor on Public Utilities Tunji Light Ariyomo, in a statement, hailed Foundation for Partnership Initiatives in the Niger-Delta (PIND) and A4 & T Power Solutions for the success of the Gbagira project.

Ariyomo also said another development partner, Community Energy Social Enterprise, has completed about 85kw solar plant in Akure North for the use of Small and medium-sized enterprises  (SMEs) cluster and that the new plant would be inauguration by the governor soon.

He said the Gbagira power plant now brings to five the number of successfully completed community power interventions by the Akeredolu-led government in the past two years.

The governor’s aide explained that “the Ondo State government just last year provided off-grid solar intervention in Ebute-Ipare, Aboto and Igbobini towns through another private firm, Messrs R. R. Reynolds”.

“Today, we are delighted that PIND and A4 and T Solutions have continued this serious business of providing quality 24 /7 electricity for  our people using alternative technology,” the governor’s aide said.

According to Ariyomo, there are other ongoing power projects in other parts of the state, including the state capital city, Akure.

He, however, implored the beneficiaries of the power projects to ensure prompt and regular payment of their bills.

The Olugbo of Ugbo, Oba Fredrick Akinruntan, hailed Akeredolu on the giant stride, saying the various projects being executed in the Southern senatorial district are laudable.

  • Who is next minister for Ondo?

President Muhammadu Buhari will be sworn in for a second term on May 29. There is intense lobbying for ministerial position for Ondo State.

The President will likely retain some of his high performing ministers while the cabinet will be injected with fresh faces to help him to consolidate on the administration’s achievements.

Ondo State Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu (SAN) is from the Ondo North Senatorial zone. The general view is that the ministerial nominee should come from either the Central Senatorial Zone or the South Senatorial Zone of the state.

This is anchored on the principles of fair and equitable distribution of major offices across the state.

Unlike 2015 when the President delayed in the appointment of his ministers, feelers indicate that he is likely to want to unveil his team, shortly after inauguration.

Besides, there are expectations that, the President will like to bring in highly cerebral and proven technocrats who have the capacity to add value to the administration’s efforts at fulfilling its second term mandate.

To this effect, prominent names have begun to feature as likely nominees from Ondo State, amid intense lobbying.

One of them is Prince Soji Ehinlanwo from Ilaje local government in Ondo South District. A close associate of President Buhari, the Ilaje-born technocrat and politician is perceived as a very trusted and reliable ally of the President, who has been a strong and rabid supporter of the President when he was the leader of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) and the defunct Congress for Progressives Change (CPC) days.

He is regarded as one of the earliest torchbearers of the clamour for a Buhari Presidency in the Southwest, helping to establish strong roots for advancing the Buhari candidature in the Southwest, the Communication Minister Shittu – even before and during the defunct CPC merger with the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) that crystalised into the All Progressives Congress (APC).

He was the governorship candidate of the fefunct CPC in the 2012 governorship election and was believed to have made the singular sacrifice of quitting his prestigious job at the European Commission (EC) to contest on the platform of the defunct CPC.

Ehinlanwo is described by those who know him as an incredible bridge builder who has very good relationship with many of the leaders within the APC.

He has worked for well known global organisations such as the UK National Health service (NHS), Electronic Data Systems (EDS) – now part of Hewlett Packard (HP) – UK, Cap Gemini UK, Atos origin Belgium , Carillion Energy Services Limited – UK, The European Commission -Luxembourg, UK Department of Work and Pensions and Tesco PLC, providing expertise and leadership in diverse areas and  currently Business Analyst/Data Lead for Tesco PLC – the biggest UK Retail Outlet.

Another prominent name on the lobbying list although his not a member of the ruling APC is former Governor Olusegun Mimiko from  Ondo West local government in Ondo Central Senatorial District.

While Mimiko is yet to formally declare for the APC, prior to the House of Assembly elections, he was believed to have been approached by some chieftains of the APC to use the machinery of his ZLP to help boost the chances of APC candidates in the said elections.

A source confirmed that the said arrangement was implemented during the recent House of Assembly elections where APC clinched 23 seats out of 26 seats after its not-too-impressive performance at the Presidential election.

The appearance of his name has elicited reactions and jitters amongst some of those who are angling for the nomination as they fear he has powerful backers.

It is believed that those who are lobbying for Mimiko are pushing the argument that he will be a good material for the Health Ministry.

An APC stalwart, Chief Olusola Oke, SAN also from Ilaje, Ondo South is also a big name on the ministerial list.

Oke is a big name in Ondo and national politics. He is politician of considerable experience. He worked very closely with the late Dr Olusegun Agagu.

He was the Ondo state representative for the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) while Dr Olusegun Agagu was the state governor, he was National Legal Adviser of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) during Dr. Goodluck Jonathan’s administration.

He contested for governorship election twice; first in 2012 as PDP Candidate and in 2016 as Alliance for Democracy (AD) Candidate.

Prior to the 2019 general elections, he was appointed Southwest Zonal Co-ordinator of the Buhari/Osinbajo Campaign Organisation, a move many regarded as an acknowledgement of his political sagacity and experience. He is believed to have a very good relationship with the National leader of the APC – Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.

If political experience is a strong yardstick for the choice of the nominee, it is believed the Ilaje born legal icon and astute politician could be the likely nominee.

Also from Ondo South is another eminent politician and legal practitioner, Morayo Lebi.

He was the senatorial candidate of the APC in the 2015 elections. A loyal and committed party man, many people rated him high for contributing immensely to building the party in Ondo South, especially at the time when the Labour Party (LP) and the PDP were the dominant political parties in the South District of Ondo State.

Many think he should have been given the party ticket in 2019. Although he did not get the ticket, he worked assiduously for APC and President Buhari’s re-election.

Many people believe he should be compensated with the ministerial slot.

Also, another likely nominee is Isaacs Kekemeke, an Ijaw-Arogbo born politician from Ese-Odo, in Ondo South District.

He was a close associate of the former Governor, Olusegun Agagu. A lawyer, he was at various times Attorney General/Commissioner for Justice and later, Commissioner for Works under the PDP’s Government headed by Agagu between 2003 and 2009.

At a time, he was the Secretary to the Ondo State Government (SSG).

Kekemeke was also former Chairman of the APC in Ondo state. He was edged out of office over allegations said to have been plotted and orchestrated by his political foes within the ruling party he built.

His supporters point to the fact that he was State Chairman when Ondo State delivered victory for the President in 2015.

However, a big challenge that has been identified as a potential threat to his quest for ministerial nomination is the fact that the current Deputy Governor, Agboola Ajayi hails from the same Ese-odo Local Government with him.

For now, as the jostle and speculations persist, it is clear that President Buhari is keeping the cards to his chest and ultimately, he is in position to determine who will be picked for this important National service, as anxiety mounts. Another likely contender is Ife Oyedele, an engineer and associate of President Buhari. He currently holds a federal board position.

  • ‘How Buhari lost in Ondo’

Stalwarts of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo state regarded as ‘estranged’ member on Wednesday met in Akure, the Ondo state capital under the leadership of the former deputy governor of the state, Alhaji Ali Olanusi.

At a well-attended meeting, the runner-up of the APC 2016 primary election, Segun Abraham was in attendance with other stakeholders including the lawmaker representing Akure North/South federal constituency, Afe Olowookere, pioneer APC chairman, Isaac Kekemeke, Chiefs Felix Ayegbusi, M.A Akeju, Adewale Omojuwa and Gboyega Adedipe.

Others were Pius Omolola, Mrs Yetunde Ogundipe, Mrs Kehinde Adeniran, Kunle Eko-Davies, Omo’ba Abayomi Adesanya, Gani Muhammed and other party elders from across the state.

Olanusi, who is a member, APC Board of Trustees (BOT) of mandated each representative from the 18 local government areas to appraise the last Presidential/National Assembly in their respective areas,in which their major complaints were anti-party activities and lack of funds to mobilise voters.

The former deputy governor decried the level of anti-party activities of some members of the party in the state which according to him caused the failure of President Muhammadu Buhari in the state with some Senatorial and House of Representatives candidates in the state.

Olanusi said prior to the election, the group had adequately alerted the national leadership of the party on the alleged compromise of the party leadership in the state.

He alleged that the APC leadership worked against the party because their anointed candidates failed to clinch the party tickets for the National Assembly elections.

Olanusi alleged that leadership of the party in the state directed many APC supporters especially top government officials to mobilise for the candidates of the opposition Action Alliance (AA).

He however enthused that If Buhari had won the presidential election in Ondo state, the ‘anti-APC forces’ would have claimed the credit despite working against the party in the state.

The BoT member said” We had envisaged this problem in Ondo state, and that is why we cried to the National leadership of the party on the anti-party activities of some leaders of the party before the election.

“But they failed to listen to us, and didn’t recognise our voice then, for me, I am for the growth and unity of the party. We shall progress, we will not allow those enemies of the party who have no fear of God and respect for elders to come back and rule us again.

The APC former chairman, Isaac Kekemeke, noted that funds disbursed to Ondo state by National leadership of the party for 2019 general elections were diverted.

Kekemeke, insisted that APC leadership in the state financed the AA in the state, urging its national leadership to intervene on the affairs of the party in the state ahead of next year governorship election.

The 2016 runner-up, Abraham who came to the state for the first time after the controversial primary election said his ‘stolen mandate’ was retrievable.

According to him,” I am not desperate to become governor, but my interest is to salvage the state from inept governance and move it to the desired level for future sake”.

Abraham said since his case was still pending in court, he would not comment, but however appreciated the leaders of concerned APC group in the state and their numerous supporters for their steadfastness and love for him.

He predicted victory at the end of the day, urging them to remain resolute and resilient for the development of the sunshine state.

  • Group sues for unity in Ondo APC

Leaders of Buhari/Osinbajo Re-election Group (BOREG) within the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo state met in Akure, the Ondo state capital on Saturday to appraise the just-concluded 2019 polls.

The meeting was aimed at  putting  the results of the elections in proper perspective for future endeavours.

The leader of the group and Nigerian Ambassador to Togo ,Sola Iji hailed members for working assiduosly for the re-election of President Muhammadu Buhari and Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo.

He charged supporters of the ruling party to align and work towards the next year governorship election to guarantee victory for the party.

Iji also appreciated leaders and members of BOREG across the State for their untiring effort towards the success of the project despite ‘visible’ challenges.

The envoy admonished them to remain steadfast and doubled their commitments to the party as a platform for progressives governance in the country.

He assured the people that their support for the re-election project would not go unrewarded.

Also, the Coordinator of the group, Basorun Wale Oyewole echoed the message of BOSEG leader, Iji in appreciating all members of the group for their loyalty and support for all the candidates of the party during the last general elections.

He used the opportunity to commend all winners on APC’s platform.

Leaders of the group in sequence commended the enviable roles the group played during the elections.
They enjoined its leadership to keep the house intact for future engagements.

BOSEG stakeholders resolved that both leaders and members of the group should remain committed and alive to their responsibilities in their respective local government areas.

It would be recalled that the group’s leader, Iji ahead of the Presidential/National Assembly polls in the state donated 20 branded vehicles, Giant Bill Boards and Office accommodation in support of Buhari’s re-election.

At the parley were former Speaker, Ondo State Assembly, Kenneth Olawale,Dr Segun Ayodele, former commissioner, Mrs Yinka Alabi, and Wale Akintimehin.

Others are O.Omoogun, Samson Ojetayo,Eben Ogunrinde, Bolu Adeboye,Bisi Ayeni, Chief S.A Idris,Olakunle Eko, Mrs Kehinde Adeniran(KK) and Rotimi Agbede who are all APC stalwarts.

  • Saga of Ondo communities where residents, visitors frequently perish in auto crashes

I lost my wife, Ngozi, in one of the fatal accidents that occurred here at Oke Alabojuto Road. We were together here in the market until it was time for her to go and bring the kids from school. She was standing by the roadside waiting to cross to the other side when a vehicle lost control trying to ascend the hilly road and crushed everybody and everything on its path.

“My wife was one of the victims. She didn’t die immediately. We rushed her to a private hospital from where we were referred to a general hospital. After a short time at the general hospital, we were referred to FMC Owo. It was there she died. The accident was just one of the countless fatal accidents that plunged many homes into mourning till date.”

Above were the tearful recall of  Pascal Ndukwuegbulam, a trader at Oke Alabojuto area of Ikare in Ondo State.

For several decades, the Oke Alabujoto road in the heart of Ikare area of Ondo State passed off as a graveyard, following the innumerable accidents that claimed the lives of countless residents and visitors who visited the community from other parts of the country for commercial activities.

Aside from regularly claiming human lives, the fatal accidents were said to have also been responsible for the loss of other valuables, including houses, public utilities, shops and wares of the traders.

Another consequence of the challenge, according to a resident is that  “commercial activities which were the hallmark of the town nosedived because traders within and outside the state avoided the area like a plague to avoid being killed in the incessant auto crashes.”

The traditional ruler of the town, Olukare of Ikare, Oba Kadiri Saliu Momoh, told The Nation that occurrence of fatal accidents in the area predated his coronation in 1984 and that it had always made him unhappy.

His words: “Oke Alabojuto road, which is a major road in this town and state by extention was a very, very rough and dangerous road that discouraged many people from travelling and doing business in the neighbourhood.

“Accidents often occurred on the road and had consequently claimed the lives of innumerable members of the community and traders who came to do business here. Many houses and other valuables had all along been destroyed.”

As the monarch of the town, Oba Momoh said he was always uncomfortable each time information got to him that an accident had occurred in the area.

“I wasn’t feeling happy. Nobody would be happy to see such calamities happening to his people, nobody. The people always cried to me every time accidents occurred and it was always saddening to me.

“We cried to the previous governments. They promised to do something about the state of the road but at the end of the day, they didn’t.

The amiable king said succour came the way of the people last year when the state governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, made good his electioneering promise to fix the road and put an end to the killing of innocent people in avoidable auto crashes.

“His Excellency, Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, came here during his electioneering campaign and promised to do something about the road. Last year, we cried to him and he responded by coming to fix the road. No case of auto crash has been recorded since he fixed the road.

“Aside from fixing the road, the governor has also helped to fix some bridges that were previously not good for vehicles to move on. Some of the roads and bridges he has fixed are federal roads, but he has taken it upon himself to attend to them.  I took some chiefs to his office recently to express our deep and sincere appreciation to him for coming to our rescue. The safety of our people and visitors plying the road and those doing business in the area is now guaranteed and we are happy for it.”

He further said: “Aside from putting an end to avoidable auto crashes that brought sorrow to our people,  fixing the road by the Governor Akeredolu-led government has brought a lot of other benefits to our community.

“First, it has enhanced commercial activities and improved the standard of living of our people because traders from within the state and places like Kogi,   Benin, Lokoja and adjoining states now  have the confidence to come and do business here. Everywhere here in Ikare is  market. The boom in business activities has also had a ripple effect on other commercial activities like transportation. It  has been a win-win situation for us since the road was constructed.”

Beaming with smiles all over his face, the slim built and dark-complexioned monarch said: “I can confidently tell you that the quality of work on the road is excellent.  We always hold our meeting every nine days and I can tell you that we always spend half of our meeting days to pray for the governor.”

A survivor of one of the fatal accidents, Kehinde Ganiyat, said fatal accidents were almost permanent features of the road until the present administration fixed the road.

Reliving her narrow escape from death, the trader said: “A trailer carrying bags of rice was trying to ascend the hilly road. In the course of doing that, the driver lost control and the trailer speedily rolled backward, hitting an electric pole and killing many people; traders, commercial motorcyclists and passers-by in the process.

“I was around the place where many people died but I can’t explain how I managed to survive. A woman who came to buy items for the daughter’s wedding was killed in one of the terrible accidents.

“There was hardly a week that an accident would not occur two times or more  and each time it did, many lives were lost.” The woman, a market leader in the town, Iyalaje, Alhaja Risikatu Mohammed, recounted how pregnant women and their babies perished in some of the accidents. “I am a bonafide daughter of this town, so I know everything happening here. Accidents were occurring on a regular basis here until now. At times, as many as 20 people could die in an accident.  We have lost so many people, houses and other valuables that one cannot give an exact number of victims.

“So many pregnant women have died with their babies in some of the accidents.  There was a particular accident where a pregnant woman had an iron pierce her stomach. The baby came out of her body and both of them died. Some women had an iron pierce into their private parts and died.

“On another occasion,  an okada rider was electrocuted after a pole was pulled down by a vehicle that had break failure. He was trying to take his motorcycle away from the scene of the accident when he suddenly got electrocuted.”

The spate of accidents, she further said, “Instilled fears in everybody that we couldn’t come out to do business again. We are glad that those days of horror are over.  Our special appreciation goes to Governor Akeredolu and his team because if they had not come to our aid, we would have continued to be mourning.

“The story has changed completely today. Our businesses are doing well and we can afford to support our families .  We are supposed to be having a remembrance ceremony for all the people that died on this road because it was in the course of searching for what their children and entire family members would eat that they died.”

Another trader, who simply identified himself as Bunmi, said the construction of the road ended the fruitless practice of offering sacrifices on different parts of the road to prevent accidents. “If sacrifices were all that were needed to stop accidents, we would have long stopped recording accidents on this road because we offered more than enough sacrifices to appease the gods but they never worked.

“What the sacrifices failed to achieve over the years, the construction of the road has done. This means that it wasn’t any deity that was causing accidents but the failure of previous administration to pay attention to the pains of the citizens.”

Pascal, the trader who lost his wife in one of the accidents while going to take the children from school, was also elated that the road has been fixed. Comparing the previous state of the road with what is on the ground now, Pascal said: “I have not heard of any road accident since the road was fixed.  Life for everyone here is a lot better than what obtained in the past. We are grateful to the present administration in the state for this giant stride. If this kind of intervention had been done earlier, maybe my wife wouldn’t have died.”

Reliving how he received the news of his wife’s sad incident, the widower said: “It was a day that broad daylight turned to darkness for me.  It was like the end of the world had come that day. It is not an experience I would like to continue to talk about.”

Interestingly, not many believed the Oke Alabojuto road had a solution. In search of a solution to the countless number of deaths on the road, the locals have made several supplications to the gods without any success. Spiritual interventions were also not left out. But, with the last round of rocks brought down by the contractor’s tractors, the people of Ikare and indeed the entire Akoko people are singing a new song of victory over a hilly road that has claimed many lives in the past.

Also,  Oke Oka along Iwaro Oka /Abuja Road, is another road in the state where the lives of many road users had been wasted in accidents for many years. For many residents of the area, the road before now could be best described as a graveyard as it had, had innumerable innocent travellers perish on the hilly road, after their vehicles plunged into a massive ditch by the side of the road.

A resident of the community, who gave her name as Busayo Adebayo, said oftentimes, they would not be aware that an accident had occurred until the victims’ bodies begin to decompose in the ditch.

“We christened this road a graveyard because it had swallowed many human bodies. It was when the present administration fixed the road that many people had given up on, that accidents stopped occurring here. if it was in the past, you would not be able to stand here because stench from decomposing bodies would not allow you to stand here. The fixing of the road has made travelling very easy for people going to Abuja and other northern states to move with ease.

“We thank God for giving us a governor who is always quick to address issues that affect the lives and welfare of the people. In the whole of Ondo, accidents are fast disappearing from our roads. Hunger, domestic violence and other vices that used to occur because of non-payment of salaries have all ended. Not only is he paying salaries as and when due but he has also cleared six out of the seven-month salary arrears. This has brought a big boost to economic activities in the state.”

Another resident, who identified himself simply as Ogunyemi, recounted how a final year student in private university had her entire family members killed on the road.

“The family members had attended her graduation programme and were going home. She was to go back with them but she stayed back because she needed to collect some documents. When her family members were returning home, their vehicle was involved in a fatal accident and ended up in the ditch. They all perished. We have been saved from the odious stench that oozes from the ditch after people die there and start decomposing. If every government had been responding to challenges like this all these years, we would have saved many children from becoming orphans, motherless, and fatherless. We would have prevented many women from becoming widows and many men from becoming widowers.”

After several years of woes, residents of Idanre, a popular town in the state, said they have also begun to experience a new lease of life as following the construction of  new road that connects the community to Akure.

“ We had always had vehicles involved in accidents along the road because there was a huge ditch on the way. At times, long vehicles would line up the road for a day or more immediately one of them is stuck in the bad road. All that has ended with the construction of this new road.

“Before now,  we only had a single entry and exit road but with the new road, we now have a better and shorter road to the heart of the state. When the governor came and made promises to us about it during his electioneering campaign, we thought it was the usual deceit of politicians. We are indeed shocked but happy that he made good his promise,” said a resident who gave her name simply as Labake.

Songs of redemption have also been reverberating from the mouths of residents of Emure Ile with the construction of dual carriageway by the government. For the residents, the gesture is unimaginable to have come from  a government that has spent just two years in office.

Emmanuel, a commercial motorcyclist, said: “We sincerely thank God for using Governor Rotimi Akeredolu to fix this road. As a transporter, fixing the road would help put a stop to constant damage to my motorcycle.

“ What previous governments couldn’t do in four to eight years, he has done within two years. We are shocked to see the massive work that this government is doing in the area of road construction, not only here in Emure Ile but across the state. Kudos to him and his team.”

The state Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Yemi Olowolabi, said Governor Akeredolu met dilapidated infrastructure, especially roads, on ground when he assumed power.

Olowolabi said because of the governor’s decision to change Ondo State from the civil service state to an industrial state, the governor considered it necessary to first of all build infrastructure that would fast-track the realisation of his administration’s agenda.

He said all the roads that are being constructed and all those ones already constructed were meant to address many issues in Ondo State.

“One, no fewer than five companies have already taken off in Ondo State. This will, to a reasonable degree, contribute to efforts aimed at getting our teaming youths employed.

“More companies have also shown interest to partner with Ondo State just because of the current government’s serious effort to industrialised the state.

“We must also not forget that kidnapping and other criminal activities on some of our roads have been drastically reduced because of the governor’s major intervention in road construction.”

Also speaking, the Chief Press Secretary to the state government, Mr Segun Ajiboye, described the Governor Akeredolu administration’s achievement as unprecedented.

In a chat with our correspondent, Ajiboye said: “In less than two years in office, the Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu administration in Ondo State has had an unprecedented success in road constructions and repairs. Like no other administration before it, Akeredolu has kept to his promise to make both the people’s welfare and infrastructural development of the state a priority of his administration. From the mysterious Oke Alabojuto in Ikare Akoko, to Idanre, Akure, Owo and Sabome in the southern senatorial zone, the governor has displayed a determination that cannot be faulted as far as road construction is concerned.

“In the rural areas, the chairmen of the local government areas have been mandated to construct at least one-kilometre of road in their areas. This is also in addition to grading farm roads to ensure easy access to and from the farms.

“Even federal roads have not been spared. The Owo-Ikare and Akure-Ado-Ekiti roads have received attention from the state government.”

  • Ondo shuts hospital for training ‘quack’ nurses

Ondo State Government on Thursday sealed off a private hospital in Okitipupa reportedly owned by Dr. Odusola Aribo for training auxiliary nurses against the established law.

The Acting Permanent Secretary Ministry of Health, Dr. Dipo Durojaye, after being briefed by the Ministry’s Monitoring team, who monitored hospitals in Okitipupa, said Aribo also started a hospital without following laid down regulations.

Durojaye added Aribo did not register the hospital with the State Ministry of Health, which makes it illegal.

He said it would not be business as usual in the State health sector as government will descend heavily on quacks and those opening hospitals indiscriminately.

The Acting PS vowed that any private health institution indulging in the training of health personnel would be sanctioned stressing government will not allow the life of the people to be endangered.

He also warned Patient Medicine Stores operating as hospitals and treating patients to desist from such acts, which according to him, posed great threat to the well-being of the society.

The Director Hospital Services, Dr Richard Adesoji, said quacks are dangerous to the health sector as they were not properly trained and could not make correct diagnosis.

He disclosed hospitals that cannot employ qualified Nurses can make use of Community Health Extension Workers (CHEWS) as agreed at the National Council on Health.

The Director Nursing Services, Mrs. Alice Ogundele, who led the monitoring team to Okitipupa, said it was alarming that some hospital in that locality had more than 50 quacks in training when even some accredited Schools of Nursing and Midwifery were only allowed to admit 50 or less.

Mrs. Ogundele said this trend was dangerous to the nursing profession as it will not allow qualified nurses getting jobs as these quacks are source of cheap labour.

Some other hospitals visited in Okitipupa are St. Peter’s Hospital, Akingbola Hospital and Oresanya Hospital where student trainees took to their heels on sighting the monitoring team.

The three hospitals were served letters of warning to desist from acts that are capable of endangering the health of the people or face seriously sanctions and eventual.

  • Updated: Court sentences killer of ex-Ondo deputy gov’s daughter to death

An Ondo state High Court sitting in Akure on Wednesday sentenced Seidu Adeyemi to death by hanging for killing Miss Khadijat Oluboyo, the first daughter of a former deputy governor of Ondo State,Lasisi Oluboyo, an indigene of Ikare-Akoko, headquarters of Akoko Northeast local government.

Adeyemi was charged for killing his girlfriend, Khadijat Oluboyo, on July 2, 2018.

He consequently buried her inside his room at Aratusi, Oke-Aro area of Akure.

Khadijat, was a final year student of Adekunle Ajasin University in Akungba Akoko (AAUA) until her death.

In his judgement, Justice Samuel Bola said the prosecutor and the state government’s counsel had proved beyond reasonable doubt that Adeyemi actually committed the offence he was charged for.

Adeyemi, a graduate of Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA), was arrested by the Ondo State Police Command in July, last year for killing the former deputy governor’s daughter for a money ritual purpose at his house in Akure and allegedly buried the deceased inside his room for six days.

Justice Bola held that by criminal law, the convict had committed a capital offence and he should die by hanging.

After the verdict, leader of the prosecution team and State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Kola Olawoye, expressed delight over the judgement.

He, however, described the circumstances leading to the death of the deceased as unfortunate.

Olawoye noted that the state government was interested in the case because of the circumstances leading to the death of Khadijat Oluboyo and the judgement would serve as a deterrent for other criminals.

According to him, “The state decided to take up the case in order to know what led to the death of the deceased, and we want the defendant to explain to the whole world the part he took in the killing of the lady if any, thank God the court had done justice to the case today”

The father of the deceased, Oluboyo had earlier told reporters when the incident happened that he would not be interested in pursuing litigation on the matter before the state government took up the issue and charged Adeyemi to court.
