  • No work today in Ondo

    Governor Rotimi Akeredolu has declared  today, August 30 as work-free day for civil servants in Ondo State.

    This followed a resolution of the State Executive Council, which called for a work-free day to allow public servants participate in the continous voters registration, which is scheduled to close tomorrow.

    In a statement by the Commissioner for Information and Orientation,Yemi Olowolabi, the governor called on the people to take full advantage to the opportunity to register and obtain their permanent voters cards.

    This, he said, would  enable them to cast their votes in the forthcoming general elections.

    The statement said workers are expected back at work tomorrow.

     

  • CVR: Akeredolu declares Thursday work-free in Ondo

    Gov. Oluwarotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State has declared Thursday, August 30, as work-free day to enable public servants participate in the continuous voter registration exercise in the state.

    Akeredolu, according to a statement on Wednesday by Mr Yemi Olowolabi, the State Commissioner for Information, in Akure, made the declaration following a resolution of the State Executive Council.

    The CVR, which was to have been suspended two weeks ago ahead of the 2019 general elections, was extended to enable more people register.

    The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced that it would now be suspended on Friday, Aug. 31, until after the 2019 elections.

    Akeredolu called on the people of the state to take full advantage to the opportunity to register and obtain their Permanent Voters Cards, to be able to vote in the forthcoming general elections.

    He said that the work-free day on Thursday be observed in the state to allow public servants participate in the CVR, ahead of Friday’s suspension of the exercise.

    The workers in state are expected back at work on Friday, August 31, 2018.

  • One dies in Ondo multiple road accidents

    Two separate road accidents reportedly occurred in Akoko area of Ondo state on Wednesday claiming one live.

    The first carnage involved a bus and commercial motorcycle rider (Okada)around 9pm,who sustained head injury.

    Eye witness said the victim was rushed to Ikare-Akoko Specialist Hospital by men of the Federal Road Safety Commission(FRSC) Ikare –Akoko.

    The Medical Director,Dr Wale Oguntuase confirmed that a man was brought to hospital with serious head injury which was quickly referred to Federal Medical Centre(FMC) Owo .

    The Unit Commander, FRSC,Ikare Akoko, Jimoh Basiru confirmed that his men carried him to FMC, Owo where he was confirmed dead.

    The second accident involved an oil tanker which detoured while climbing the ‘deadly’ Okerigbo hill.

    It took FRSC officials prompt intervention to supervise the off loading of the product to another trailer,while using a towing vehicle to remove the tanker from the busy highway.

    Basiru warned motorists against night journey,saying it is too risky.

    A spokesman of the community, Alhaji Ibrahim kilani urged Ondo state government to level up Okerigbo hill, Akungba Akoko like that of Oke-Alabojuto,Ikare Akoko where the government was doing a good job to reduce the dreadful hiIl.

    Kilani also hailed the state government for the completion of flooded areas such as Jubilee,Victory College and Bishop’s Court-Ugbe Akoko road that are now motorable.

  • 2019: Fight for political offices, Youths urged

    Youths in Ondo state have been charged to actively participate in politics and be part of stakeholders in the decision-making to overhaul the future of the country.

    The state chairman of the Social Democratic Party(SDP), Korede Duyile, gave the charge at the official declaration of a youth leader, Tajudeen Adefisoye for the seat of Idanre/Ifedore Federal Constituency in the 2019 election.

    Duyile said the masses were tired of voting the old set of people with the same ideology.

    The chairman said SDP was on ground and most people that had shown interest in various positions were from notable and credible families that were well known to him as an indigene of Idanre himself.

    He said “Our membership is already increasing in Idanre and in the state, more people are seeing our party as a credible platform,especially the youths, to fulfil their dreams”.

    Adefisoye, who is in his mid-thirties, said he decided to run on the platform of SDP, because it had plans to allow youths to seek political positions.

    Adefisoye said he decided to be part of the real change and liberate the people of Idanre and Ifedore by bringing meaningful development to the constituency.

    According to him,” I am already assured of victory,there is no development in this town, we can’t be sending same old men to be representing us always.”

    The Aspirant was later presented with the flag of the party and urged to continue promoting the party within and outside the state.

  • Ondo School of Nursing now degree awarding institution

    Health workers under the umbrella of the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives, (NANNM) in Ondo State are happy with the State government for its decision to upgrade the School of Nursing and Midwifery, Akure to a degree awarding institution in line with global standard.

    The State Executive Council(SEC) led by Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu had this week after its meeting approved the absorption of the Nursing School by the University of Medical Science, Ondo (UNIMED) into a degree awarding institution.

    The State Chairman of the NANNM, Abel Opeyemi-Oloniyo said the decision of the government would boost the working capacity of nurses and midwives in the state.

    Comrade Oloniyo explained that the state government would become first state in Nigeria to carry oiut upgrading of its School of Nursing.

    Besides,he described as timely a proposed law aimed at upgrading the School of Health Technology in Akure to a College of Health Technology in line with global standard.

    Oloniyo said, “the upgrading of our school of Nursing is a welcome development, we were carried along from day one that government plans to ensure higher status for the school. Schools of Nursing across Nigeria have been given few years, to upgrade their status, we are happy Ondo state is taking a lead in this area, we are going to be the first state in the country to do this”.

    On the recent security breach by patients of the state Psychiatric Hospital, Akure, the NANNM Chairman reiterated his call on the state government to improve security of health workers and patients for adequate service delivery.

    Speaking on this year’s theme, “Nurses: a voice to lead health is a human right”, a don, Prof Adenike Olaogun described nurses and midwives as most critical personnel in the health care delivery hence the need to ensure their regular training.

    The state Commissioner for health, Dr. Wahab Adegbenro said the state government was working hard to improve welfare of nurses and other medical workers especially in the areas of capacity building and security at hospitals.

    Head of Service(HoS) in the state,Toyin Akinkuotu charged nurses to be more proactive in implementing various state government’s policies in the health sector particularly the introduction of free health care service for pregnant women and children below five year old.

  • Suspected cultists kill 23 year-old in Ondo

    There was confusion in Otakoba area of Ibaka in the university town of Akungba Akoko on Monday when a 23- year old boy, Felix Olowookere was reportedly killed by suspected cultists on Sunday.

    It was learnt that the deceased father, Olowookere was away for church service to appreciate God for the successful wedding of the deceased’s sister held on Saturday.

    According to the bereaved father who hails from Supare Akoko but built a house in Akungba-Akoko,he was in the church when the incident occurred.

    He said his late son learnt some trades on Information Communication Technology (ICT)while seeking admission,which turned a phone repairer for students and others.

    He said it was one of his customers who owed him N3,500 he demanded that led to his been stabbed with a broken bottle and he died instantly.

    According to the father,the culprits used axes,cutlasses,broken bottles during the sculfle.

    There was youth protest in Akungba-Akoko over the untimely death of Felix by cultists.

    The Police Area Commander for Akoko,Assjstant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Razak Rauf said those involved in the killing were now at large.

    He however said the police were trailing them for arrest.

    Felix’s corpse had been deposited at the Ikare-Akoko Specialist Hospital mortuary.

  • ADC announces congress dates, new exco for Ondo

    The National Working Committee of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has set up an 11-man committee to handle its affairs in Ondo State.

    The party also announced the dates for its congresses.

    A statement by the National Chairman, Chief Ralphs Okey Nwosu, said the conclusion at its July 31 meeting, where it reviewed the progress made so far on mobilisation and membership drive in Ondo State.

    The party, which praised efforts of stakeholders that have contributed to its growth in Ondo, also resolved to accommodate all members’ interests and encourage supporters to register, as only card-carrying members will participate in the congresses.

    According to the statement, the 11-man committee is headed by Prof. Adesegun Ojo, and Arc. Bola Olawolu as Secretary, with one nominee each from Otunba Fasawe, Otunba Demola Ijabiyi, Princess Modupe Ogunyoku, Dr. Iwaloye and groups from PDP, SDP, Labour Party, APGA and APC that have declared for the ADC.

    It reads: “Congress details include – Ward congresses on August 25; Local Government Congresses on August 27 and State Congress on August 28.

    “Continuous registration and accreditation of members will be on till one hour to the particular congress.

    “We appeal to all party faithful to observe substantial compliance with the provisions of the party’s constitution and guidelines for the conduct of congresses at all levels.”

  • ‘Ondo, Ekiti political,cultural ties remain solid’

    The cultural and political affinity between Ondo and Ekiti states will always be fortified. The Ondo State Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC )Ade Adetimehin, made the observation at the weekend when he received a delegation of APC leaders from Ekiti State, who were on a thank-you visit, led by the State Chairman, Chief  Jide Awe.

    According to a statement by the party’s spokesman, Alex Kalejaye , the chairman noted that the support and efforts of Ondo State APC in Ekiti, during the campaigns, were informed by what the state chapter benefited from Ekiti, particularly, the governor-elect, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, in the past. “In 2012,  Fayemi was at the forefront of our governorship campaigns here in Ondo State. Though we lost that election, he was not deterred. Again in 2016, he showed himself a pillar to lean on till we emerged victorious,” Adetimehin said.

    Speaking earlier, Chief Awe thanked leaders and all organs of the party in Ondo State for what he termed as their massive support and encouragement given to Ekiti APC during the electioneering campaigns.  Awe said that though the Ekiti office was still basking in the euphoria of the electoral victory, the leaders considered it expedient to offer timely appreciation.

    “We are full of appreciation to the leaders and every member of APC in Ondo State for their support and encouragement. It is difficult to go to individuals for this, we are therefore using this corporate office as a means of contact to all members. It will be needless counting the number of ways through which you rendered assistance for us to get victory at the just concluded gubernatorial polls in our State,” Awe said.

     

  • Ondo seeks Fed Govt’s help to tackle ocean surge

    The Ondo State government yesterday urged the Federal Government to help it tackle incessant surge from the Atlantic Ocean.

    The occurrence has damaged property in Ayetoro community in Ilaje Local Government Area where over 25 buildings, including the only secondary school in the oil producing community, have been submerged.

    Also, over 200 persons have become homeless.

    Deputy Governor Agboola Ajayi, who represented Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, called for Federal Government’s urgent assistance to tackle the ocean surge after inspecting the damage it caused in the community.

    Ajayi, who was accompanied by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Ifedayo Abegunde; Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Funso Esan and the Chairman of Ondo State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (OSOPADEC), Gbenga Edema, sympathised with the residents, particularly those directly affected by the sea incursion.

    The deputy governor regretted the loss of home and other property to the disaster.

    He urged the Federal Government to increase its protection of the oil producing community.

    Ajayi, a former member of the House of Representatives and Chairman of the House Committee on Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), said only modern technology can end the crisis.

    He said: “I remember when I was at the House of Representatives. I led members of the NDDC to this community. I also travelled to The Netherlands to look at the modern technology we felt would solve the problem.”

    “As I am here now, you should know that Ondo State is here: the SSG is here, the Chairman of Ilaje Local Government Area is also here. We are all here.

    “As a matter of fact, the governor would have been here personally but he is away with Mr. President in The Netherland. He directed us to be here today to express our feelings, to assess the level of damage and look for best way to prevent future occurrence.”

    “Certainly, you can see this has gone beyond the Ondo State government. We will make noise and let the world know that Ayetoro is in danger, Ondo State is in danger. The Federal Government should rescue this oil producing community.

    “Probably what they did in Lagos will solve this problem. Look at Eko Atlantic City. It was able to stop this type of sea incursion and people are able to drive freely; not only this, they are even building houses on top of the sea.

    “Like what the community said, they are about three kilometres away now. A lot of houses have been eroded; children cannot go to school. So, we are worried, but we are assuring our people that we will not relent in our efforts to stop this disaster.”
