  • Ondo students appeal for bursary payment

Students from oil-producing communities in Ondo State have urged the government to pay their outstanding bursary and scholarship. The students, under the aegis of Federation of Ese-Odo Local Government Students (FELGOS) and National Association of Ilaje Students (NAIS), said the timely payment of the bursary would relieve them of pain they are going through.

The students met in Akure, the state capital, at the weekend to discuss their challenges in drawing attention of the government to their plight.

In a communiqué issued at the end of their meeting, signed by Oluwasegun Olowoparija and Anthony Oguntibeju, FELGOS and NAIS presidents, the students urged Governor Rotimi Akeredolu to approve the payment of 2014/2015 Ondo State Oil-Producing Area Development Commission (OSOPADEC) bursary and scholarship which was long overdue.

The communiqué reads: “The outstanding 2014/2015 OSOPADEC bursary and scholarship scheme was approved before the expiration of the last administration. Since the bursary scheme is part of the effort by OSOPADEC to assist undergraduate and postgraduate students from the oil-producing areas across higher institutions in the country, there must be a strong commitment towards its fulfilment.

“Most of the beneficiaries are yet to pay the tuition fees in their respective institutions. We appealfor urgent payment of the bursary in order to ease the pains our members are passing through in the face of the economic hardship in the country.”

In an interview with CAMPUSLIFE, Ibiyemi Kalejaye, a 100-Level student of Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma in Edo State, said she could no longer cope with financial burden.

She said: “Right from time, we have always relied on the OSOPADEC bursary to pay up some of our fees and take care of our needs. But now, it is not being paid on time. We are still being owed the 2014/2015 bursary in 2017.”

Beatrice Ogunbayo, a final year student of Ondo State School of Nursing and Midwifery in Akure, said: “Our parents are owed months of salaries. As a result of this, they don’t have enough to cater for our needs. We appeal to the state governor to urgently direct OSOPADEC to start the payment of our bursary for us to fulfil our financial obligation in school.”

  • Robbery scare in Ondo

    Robbery scare in Ondo

Banks, shops and markets were hurriedly closed in Ikare- Akoko and environs in Ondo State yesterday when news filtered in from Owo that robbers were in the town.
Sources said bank customers were turned back while officials closed shop at 10am.
Five people were killed during a bank raid in Ogbagi-Akoko, two weeks ago, which led to the closure of banks in the area.
An eyewitness said the men of the 32 Artillery Brigade, Akure, prevented the robbers from attacking an old generation bank, which is opposite the palace of the Olowo of Owo.
The eyewitness said the robbers announced their arrival by shooting into the air.
A source said: “Banks in Ikare Akoko, Irun Akoko, Oka Akoko and all other towns in Akoko stopped attending to customers at 10am because they had information that robbers were attacking banks in Owo.”
A bank official in Ikare Akoko, who pleaded for anonymity, confirmed the development.
The Assistant Director of Public Relations of the Artillery Brigade, Capt Ojo Adelegan, said there was no robbery in Owo.
He said: “When our men heard the information, they quickly moved in but on getting to the bank, they were told that a man in a vehicle shot into the air and ran away.

  • Akeredolu: Between expectations and reality

    Akeredolu: Between expectations and reality

When thousands of Ondo State citizens lined up in the sun on November 26, 2016 to vote a new leadership for the state, they wanted something different from what Dr. Olusegun Mimiko was offering them. The people had three major candidates namely – Rotimi Akeredolu, Eyitayo Jegede and Olushola Oke – as options to choose from.

Akeredolu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) eventually won the election.

The ex-president of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) was sworn in at the Akure township stadium before thousands of Ondo State citizens and guests from all walks of life.

Sitting and standing in that stadium were weary faces whose parents hadn’t received salaries for months, young unemployed graduates, old men and women looking forward to policies that will actually move the state towards a NEW direction (as promised during the electioneering process).

The crowd cheered loudly as Aketi as he’s fondly called promised to lead the state to “redemption.”

Two weeks have gone by without any commissioner named, no public statements about government owned parastatals, no clear focus or blueprint unveiled and announcement of any major policy.

Rather, there had been some unnecessary political statements and one begins to wonder if the governor has not forgotten his campaign promises so early.

At the gala dinner organized for the new government, the governor was said to have lambasted a Senator for not supporting him during the election period but went ahead to publish in the newspaper  an advert  congratulating him upon inauguration.

One wonders if the rumoured internal wrangling within the ruling party won’t affect Akeredolu’s performance in office.

The southern part of the state hasn’t had electricity for many years now, also, the Akoko areas in the north haven’t had light in about a year. Equally, Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko needs proper funding to make the institution better than it is presently, this must also be done without putting financial burden on the parents/guardians through increment in fees.

Akeredolu, who expressed appreciation for the rapid transformation going on in the university, pledged to support the trend of development in the institution.

Oladunni rejoiced with Akeredolu on his inauguration as the sixth executive governor in the state, urging the government to intervene in the institution’s financial constraints.

Oladunni who reeled out the various challenges confronting AAUA, appealed passionately to the governor to intervene.

He said: “As you are aware, AAUA is presently a leading state university in Nigeria, and it is not resting on its oars. But there are a number of challenges that are confronting the university.

“Prominent among these is finance; though it is common knowledge that the nation’s economy is in distress, we are appealing passionately to you to kindly intervene in resolving these challenges so that the university can continue to soar”.

The institution’s Vice Chancellor Prof Igbekele Ajibefun, said Akeredolu’s pedigree and credentials speak volumes of what he can do in his new capacity as the chief executive officer of the state.

He added that the university was ready to key into the development programmes of the  Akeredolu-led government.

His words: “We are not unaware of your achievements in the previous leadership capacities that you held in the past.

“We are prepared to key seamlessly into the development programmes and plans of your government. We pray that God will abide with you in your earnest pursuit to take the state to the next level.”
