Man to die by hanging for killing roommate in Ondo

The Akure Division of the Ondo State High Court has sentenced a middle-aged man, Sunday Omoniyi, to death by hanging for killing his roommate, Michael Oyebanji.

Justice Williams Rotimi Olamide delivered the judgment after finding Omoniyi guilty of stabbing Oyebanji in the chest during a dispute over shutting a door.

The incident occurred on July 23, 2022, at No. 4, Canaanland, Ijoka Road, in Akure South Local Government Area.

A witness, Ismaila Adefaka, who is also a landlord to both men, told the court that he heard unusual noises from Omoniyi’s room and found Oyebanji lying in a pool of blood.

The victim was later confirmed dead at the hospital.

Two co-tenants, Gift Adedeji and Opeyemi Adedugbe, testified that the men had argued over shutting the door earlier that morning but appeared to have settled the matter before the stabbing occurred.

They said they returned to the room after hearing Oyebanji’s voice and saw Omoniyi holding a blood-stained knife.

Police prosecutor Fisayo Oladepo informed the court that Omoniyi confessed to the killing in a statement after his arrest.

Oladepo said the offence was contrary to section 316 and punishable under section 319 of the Criminal Code, Cap 37, Vol. 1, Laws of Ondo State of Nigeria 2006.

Justice Olamide held that the prosecution had proved its case beyond reasonable doubt and sentenced Omoniyi to death by hanging.

Tension in Ondo community as herdsmen allegedly destroy crops worth over N20m

…govt appeals for calm, vows to take action

Tension has enveloped the Ipogun community in Ifedore Local Government Area of Ondo State following allegations that herdsmen invaded farmlands and allowed their cattle to destroy crops valued at more than ₦20 million.

The incident, which reportedly occurred on July 5 and 6, 2025, led to the destruction of large commercial plantations of maize, cassava, plantain, vegetables, and yams.

One of the affected farmers, Tunde Fawoyi, described the loss as “devastating,” citing the huge financial, time, and human resources invested in the farms. He said a protest letter had been sent to Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, urging urgent intervention to prevent further destruction and possible conflict.

Another farmer, Adefila Solomon, whose yam and cassava farms were destroyed, appealed to the governor to compensate the victims for what he termed “heinous acts” by the herders.

In a letter dated July 10, 2025, addressed to security agencies in the state, the farmers demanded compensation and called on the Amotekun Corps to act swiftly to prevent herdsmen-farmer clashes in Oke Ose, Ipogun. They said no arrests had been made since the incident.

“We are writing to report an incident of destruction of crops on our Farm located at Oke Ose Ipogun in Ifedore Local Government on Saturday and Sunday (5th and 6th July, 2025). Our farm was visited by herdsmen who allowed their livestock to graze on our crops, resulting in significant damage.

“The crops destroyed include maize, cassava, plantain, vegetables, yams, e.t.c. This destruction has resulted in substantial financial losses for our farm and has affected our livelihood.

“We urge you to investigate this incident and take necessary actions to prevent such recurrence and ensure perpetrators are arrested and made to pay compensation.

“We also request your assistance in ensuring that our farm is protected from further destruction. The pictures are attached to this letter for evidence. We would appreciate any support or guidance you can provide in this matter,” it read in part.

In a swift reaction when contacted, the state Commissioner for Agriculture and Forestry, Olaleye Akinola, condemned the destruction of the farmlands, vowing to investigate the case.

He explained that the state government is taking necessary action to prevent any reprisal from the locals.

“Let me first sympathise with all the farmers who have suffered losses due to the destruction of their farms. I understand the impact of such an incident on your livelihoods and our collective food security efforts in the state.

”I urge you all to remain calm and continue to work towards ensuring food security and economic development in the state, as we are working closely with security agencies, including the Amotekun Corps, to investigate this ugly incident and bring the perpetrators to justice.

“Our government will not tolerate any form of destruction or harassment of our farmers. I also charge all farmers to be security-conscious around their farms and to report any suspicious movements or activities that could lead to the destruction of their farms to the relevant authorities,” the commissioner said.

While appealing to all stakeholders to cooperate with the administration of Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa in tackling insecurity affecting farmers, he added that the government would continue to provide necessary assistance, including adequate security, to farmers across the state.

JUST IN: Former LP deputy gov candidate Awude dumps Peter Obi, leads scores to join APC in Ondo

A former deputy governorship candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the November 16, 2023, gubernatorial election in Ondo State, Hon Dayo Awude, has defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state.

Awude, a great supporter of opposition leader, Peter Obi of the LP, with scores of his supporters and members of the Sunshine grassroots Network (SGN) across the 18 local government areas of the state, were warmly received into the fold of the APC by Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa in Akure on Monday.

A former stalwart of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) before joining the LP, Awude defected to the APC alongside the former chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in the state, Dele Ogunbamerun.

Speaking at the defection ground held at the Akure Town Hall, Awude disclosed that his decision to join the APC with his supporters was informed by the development strides of Governor Aiyedatiwa and the progressive achievements of President Bola Tinubu.

He noted that he and his group of supporters, especially in the Akure axis, have come over to the governing party to add value and ensure that President Tinubu gets an overwhelming victory in 2027.

“The current President [Tinubu] is our son in the Southwest. Should we now open our eyes to allow some people to chase him away in the 2027 general election? No. We must come under this party to ensure he is victorious.

“Yoruba land must be great. We must join hands for its progress. We have come to add value to the APC. I can assure Mr Governor [Aiyedatiwa] that our coming to the party will increase support, especially for President Bola Tinubu.

“So, I’m asking our people to go back to their units and wards to get integrated. We are here for progress and to support our son [Tinubu] and to also support the government of Lucky Aiyedatiwa,” he said.

On his part, the former SDP chairman, Dele Ogunbamerun, said their coming to the APC was an opportunity to serve and support President Tinubu’s re-election bid across the length of the state.

“I see our coming as an opportunity to work. I have gone through a lot in other political parties, but I thank God I am now back home. I appreciate Dayo Awude, who leads us into the fold of the APC.”

Welcoming the defectors, the Chairman of the APC in the State, Ade Adetimehin, saluted the courage of Awude for finally pitching his tent with the ruling party.

He also described the former SDP deputy governorship candidate as a man of capacity, whose weight in the politics of Akure is highly respected at his unit and ward levels.

Presenting Awude and his supporters to Governor Aiyedatiwa, the APC chairman further solicited more support for the party ahead of the 2027 general election.

He assured the defectors of a level playing ground in the APC, urging them to begin canvassing for the party from their various units and extend it to the ward level.

“So, I welcome you all to this party, and we are happy to also receive you, but don’t forget that any politician who cannot deliver his unit and ward is not a politician. I urge all our new members to work towards strengthening the party at the grassroots,” Adetimehin said.

Receiving the Awude and his supporters, both from the LP, PDP, and SDP, Governor Aiyedatiwa said the defectors have made the right choice to join the fold of the APC in the state.

The governor urged the decampees to begin grassroots mobilisation in earnest for the party ahead of the general elections, saying the APC must retain power at the federal and state levels.

“You have made the right decision. This is the right place to be because the utmost interest for any political party is to be in power. For us in APC, we want to retain power, and we must do everything that is needed to retain the power.

“We acknowledge that you have decided to join us. Your coming will be rewarded. As you can see, the dividends of good governance are showing themselves under the leadership of President Tinubu and me as your governor in the state,” he said.

“You all can see that our house is APC. Once again, I want to congratulate you for this very wide decision you have made because there’s no alternative to the APC as of today. Our declaration for Asiwaju is that Ondo State is for Tinubu in 2027.”

He added, “The whole of Ondo state for Tinubu come 2027, and to realise that, you have decided to join us. We know winning Ondo state is not an issue, but to have overwhelming votes, and you are the evidence of those votes.

“I salute the Sunshine grassroots Network. (SGN) who are members of different political parties before joining us. So, the remaining votes that we did not get in the last governorship election will now come for President Tinubu. We have enough room to accommodate all of us.”

Fear and shock have gripped the agrarian town of Odigbo in Odigbo Local Government Area of Ondo State following the gruesome killing of a 15-year-old boy, Emmanuel, allegedly by his elder brother, Daniel.

The horrifying incident occurred on Monday near the isolated Origbara River, a well-known landmark in the area.

According to eyewitnesses, 26-year-old Daniel reportedly lured his younger brother to the riverbank and beheaded him in an act that has left residents terrified.

Witnesses told The Nation that the brothers, both sons of a respected police officer in the community, were seen earlier walking toward the river in a seemingly playful manner.

A resident, Roland Akinkunmi, said the crime came to light when a passerby attempting to cross the river spotted Daniel trying to conceal the severed head in a bag and raised the alarm.

The motive behind the gruesome act remains unclear as investigations continue.

“I was around the palace when people started shouting from the Origbara area. When I got there, I saw Daniel with a human head in a bag. I was shocked to later discover it was his younger brother’s head. This is beyond our understanding.

“They had a minor quarrel earlier, but no one expected anything like this. We are all in shock. How could someone do this to his own blood? They are not from this community. We are still in shock at what could have come over him to have the thought of killing and beheading his own young brother,” he said.

Mr Akinkunmi added that close relatives had stated that the two of them had earlier engaged in the usual siblings quarrel.

According to him, the residents suspect deeper motives, possibly involving ritual activity.

“But we believe there will be more to it. In this town, if anyone sheds human blood for the purpose of a money ritual or under any circumstances, the person will be exposed instantly,” he said.

“In this town, if anyone sheds human blood for ritual purposes or any reason, they will be exposed. Everyone is still in shock.”

Meanwhile, angry residents of the town descended on Daniel following in the sad incident and was beaten to coma before he was rushed to the hospital where he was confirmed dead.

The incident has since sparked fear and confusion in the community, with many struggling to comprehend the motive behind the brutal fratricide.

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Olayinka Ayanlade, confirmed the incident and assured that justice would be served.

“The Commissioner of Police, CP Adebowale Lawal, has ordered a thorough investigation,” Mr Ayanlade, a deputy superintendent of police, said.

He, however, added that the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further discreet inquiry.

“The command is assuring the public that no stone will be left unturned in this matter,” the police spokesman said.
