Nigeria @64: Onjeh seeks patriotism, unity

Chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Comrade Daniel Onjeh has offered hope and encouragement on the 64th Independence celebration of Nigeria.

Onjeh reminded Nigerians despite the current economic challenges facing the country, history has shown that patriotism is the key that enables nations in difficult situations to rise, overcome, and achieve economic prosperity.

Applauding the historic sacrifices and contribution of Nigeria’s past nationalist leaders, many of whom paid the ultimate price for the freedom we are enjoying today, the 2023 APC Benue South senatorial candidate stated that their efforts should inspire us to remain steadfast in our quest to build a prosperous nation.

He reminded Nigerians that they have no other country to call their own, stating it is incumbent upon every citizen to contribute their quota to national development.

“Our country’s independence was not handed to us on a silver platter. Many of our past leaders and freedom fighters sacrificed their lives for the liberty and sovereignty we celebrate today. Leaders like Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, Sir Ahmadu Bello (the Sardauna of Sokoto), Chief Anthony Enahoro, Sir Herbert Macaulay, and countless others fought tirelessly for the independence of Nigeria.

“It is their sacrifice and struggle that laid the foundation for our nation, and we must honour their memory by upholding the legacies they left behind – legacies of patriotism, selflessness, and national unity,” Onjeh stated.

While addressing the current economic hardship in the country, Onjeh commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his bold economic reforms and  taking decisive steps to tackle the nation’s most pressing issues.

“I commend President Tinubu for his courage in implementing necessary economic reforms, such as the removal of the fuel subsidy and the unification of the exchange rate. These are not easy decisions, but they are vital for the long-term stability and growth of Nigeria. The President has demonstrated true leadership by prioritizing the nation’s future, even in the face of adversity,” Onjeh noted.

The former Chairman, Governing Board of the Projects Development Institute (PRODA) Enugu argued although Nigeria is confronted with severe economic constraints due to inflation, fuel subsidy removal and the unification of exchange rates, we are not at war with any other nation.

“We are only faced with an internal struggle – one that can be overcome if we unite as one people, just as we did during the struggle for independence,” he stated.

Drawing from historical precedents, Onjeh noted that countries that have faced even worse crises, including war, were able to emerge stronger due to the patriotism and resilience of their citizens.

“There are countless examples in history where countries, despite facing war and destruction, rebuilt themselves to become global powers, driven by the unwavering spirit and patriotism of their citizens.

“Nigeria is not at war today; we are only dealing with economic challenges, and if we come together and face these challenges with unity and patriotism, we too shall emerge stronger,” Onjeh added.

Onjeh, a former president of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), encouraged Nigerians not to be discouraged by the prevailing economic realities but remain strong and hopeful for a brighter future.

“No nation has ever achieved greatness without challenges, and we are no exception. The economic hardship we are facing today is a storm that we can, and will weather. But this can only be achieved if we all play our part, remain hopeful, and contribute positively to national development,” he said.

Onjeh further highlighted the concerted efforts by the Federal Government in tackling terrorism, banditry and other forms of insecurity, while noting that these issues, although critical, should not deter Nigerians from focusing on economic recovery and growth.

“We must acknowledge the efforts of our security forces in the ongoing battle against terrorism, banditry and other security threats to the nation, but we must also focus on rebuilding our economy. Just as we are overcoming security challenges, we can also overcome economic hardship through collective action,” he stated.

He urged all Nigerians to take heart in the lessons of history, reminding them “Nigeria’s Independence Day is not just a celebration of our freedom, but a reminder of our responsibility to continue the work started by our founding fathers. Let us recommit ourselves to their vision, and let our patriotism guide us toward a better, stronger, and more prosperous Nigeria.”

  • Alia leader of Benue APC, Onjeh tells suspended chairman, others

Alia leader of Benue APC, Onjeh tells suspended chairman, others

Former candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for Benue South, Comrade Daniel Onjeh, has reiterated Benue Governor Hyacinth Alia is the undisputed leader of the APC in the State.

He was reacting to attempts by the party’s suspended chairman, Mr. Augustine Agada, to convene a State Executive Committee (SEC) meeting without the Governor’s knowledge or approval.

Onjeh emphasised that Governor Alia’s position as the Chief Security Officer and APC leader in the state cannot be undermined by any individual, group or insidious vested interest.

He urged the Benue State Government to meet any attempt to do so with stern resistance and dire consequences.

“The governor has made it clear that he will not tolerate any unauthorised or illegal gathering that could disrupt the peace of the state,” Onjeh stated.

“As the leader of the APC in Benue State, Governor Alia’s approval is required for any meeting or gathering. Anything less should never be accepted and should be dealt with accordingly,” he said.

Onjeh, a former Chairman of the Governing Board of PRODA Enugu, advised the organisers of the meeting, whom the approaching LGA elections have reawakened from their political comatose, to come to terms with reality and work with the progressives in the State to deliver good governance and dividends of democracy to the people of Benue.

He warned that if they failed to do so, the Alia administration would be justified to take any measure under the ambit of the law to stop them, including arrest and prosecution for trespass, breach of peace, and attempt to plunge the state into crisis.

He further stated that Governors are the leaders of their parties in their states and this is the practice in every state in the federation. Benue State should not be an exception.

“Governor Alia should use the full arm of the law and the might of the security agencies to foil any attempt to foment trouble and plunge the state into crisis,” Onjeh emphasised.

“No one (no matter his or her status) is above the law, and anyone who tries to undermine the governor’s authority should be dealt with accordingly,” he argued.

Onjeh called on the suspended chairman and his backers to desist from their actions and work towards the progress and development of the state. He reiterated that  Governor Alia is the leader of the APC in Benue State and should not be undermined by any individual or group.

Onjeh commended Governor Alia for turning Benue State around within the short time he has been at the helm of its affairs.

He encouraged him to remain focused. “Actions such as this attempted illegal gathering,” he stated, “are mere ploys to distract him from the excellent work he is doing for the people of Benue State.”

Onjeh also urged all APC stakeholders in the state to shun the illegal meeting the suspended chairman of the party is attempting to convene.

“By so doing,” he said, “you will not have a hand in plunging our dear state into crisis.”

He implored all citizens of Benue State to be steadfast in their support of the Alia administration as the Governor has only their best interest at heart.

Onjeh commends Alia’s appointment of new BSIEC chairman

Former candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for Benue South senatorial district, Comrade Daniel Onjeh, has commended Governor Hyacinth Alia for the recent appointment of Mr Richard Tombuwua as the new chairman of the Benue State Independent Electoral Commission (BSIEC).

The Governor, on August 2, removed Dr John Chem from the helm of BSIEC, citing the Benue Assembly accusation the former chairman of lacking good judgment and taking actions that did not meet the public interest.

In a statement on Saturday, Comrade Onjeh asserted the appointment was a bold step towards revitalising the electoral body and positioning it to conduct free, fair, and credible forthcoming local government elections.

According to him: “The new leadership of BSIEC will undoubtedly bring a fresh perspective and expertise to the commission, ensuring that the electoral process is transparent, inclusive, and reflects the will of the Benue people.”

He stated that Governor Alia’s commitment to democratic principles and determination to ensure that the forthcoming local government elections are conducted in a manner that is beyond reproach is commendable.

“This appointment,” he stated, “is a testament to Governor Alia’s dedication to good governance and the rule of law.”

Onjeh, a former Chairman of the Governing Board of PRODA Enugu, urged the new chairman of BSIEC to build on this momentum and work tirelessly to ensure that the commission discharges its duties with integrity, professionalism, and impartiality.

“I also call on all stakeholders in Benue State to support the commission in its efforts to conduct a successful and credible election,” he added.

He reiterated his commendation of Governor Alia for the appointment and wished Mr Richard Tombuwua success in this critical role.

  • Onjeh hails Supreme Court’s verdict on LG autonomy

Onjeh hails Supreme Court’s verdict on LG autonomy

Former senatorial candidate of the All Progressives Congress(APC) for Benue South, Comrade Daniel Onjeh, has commended Supreme Court  for the courage in delivering a landmark judgement that affirms the full autonomy of local governments in Nigeria.

The seven-man panel of the apex Court led by Justice Emmanuel Agim on Thursday granted local governments full financia autonomy.

The Supreme Court declared that it was unconstitutional for Governors to hold onto funds meant for local government (LG) administrations.

The court also directed that local government allocations from the Federation Account should be paid directly to them henceforth and not to State Governments’ coffers.

This judgment grants financial autonomy to the 774 local government councils in the country, allowing them to manage their funds themselves.

The court also barred Governors from dissolving democratically elected local government councils, stating that doing so would breach the 1999 Constitution.

This landmark judgment comes after months of calls for local government autonomy supported by President Bola Tinubu and the Federal Government, which sued the 36 Governors over alleged misconduct of local government funds.

In a statement on Thursday, Onjeh, a foremost advocate of local government autonomy, considers LG autonomy and State Police as the two items that would, to a large extent, resolve most of Nigeria’s developmental challenges.

The former Chairman of the Governing Board of PRODA, Enugu, said: “Anyone who opposes this ruling is an enemy of Nigeria.” He asserted that the ruling would cement local government autonomy, release much-needed funds to them to tackle insecurity and cater to their social responsibilities.

“The funds released to local governments will allow them to sufficiently handle security logistics at the local level and involve chiefs and other community leaders in securing communities across the country.”

This, Onjeh noted, would reduce insecurity, especially in rural areas, thereby providing an environment in which business and other economic activities such as farming will flourish and lead to the reduction of poverty nationwide and the growth of the nation’s economy.

He further noted that hitherto, most of the federal allocations meant for local governments ended up being siphoned, leaving little for developmental projects.

“But with full control of their finances,” he noted “local governments can now apply these resources to better the lot of the people at the grassroots.”

Onjeh urged the leaders who would be at the helm of affairs of local governments going forward, to judiciously use the resources that would be allocated to their councils, investing them in projects that would improve lives such as functional primarily healthcare centres, schools, scholarships to indigent students, provision of agricultural inputs, loans to small businesses, clean water supply, rural electrification etc.

“With this landmark judgement, the panel of Supreme Court judges Led by His Lordship Justice Agim have imprinted their feets on the sand of time. Nigerians look forward to the Supreme Court delivering more pro-people judgements that will address the niggling problems of the society,” Onjeh stated.

He commended President Tinubu for taking the bull by the horns and doggedly fighting to grant autonomy to local governments. He urged local governments to vindicate the President’s belief that if they have control over their funds, more Nigerians will feel the impact of democracy and reap its bountiful dividends.

Onjeh canvasses patriotism on Democracy Day

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Comrade Daniel Onjeh has expressed felicitations with Nigerians on 2024 Democracy Day.

In a statement on Wednesday, Onjeh enjoined all citizens, especially the political class, to observe a sober reflection on our journey thus far to nationhood and democracy with the view to renewing commitment to the entrenchment of democracy and good governance in Nigeria.

Affirming that democracy remains the best system of government for a pluralistic society like Nigeria,

The former Chairman, Governing Board of the Projects Development Institute (PRODA) Enugu,  applauded the efforts of the founding fathers of democracy and other key players in the political space.

Onjeh particularly commended the sterling efforts and sacrifices of those he termed, “the heroes of modern democracy in Nigeria”, by which he referred to those who played active positive roles in the political polity since the start of the fourth republic in 1999.

“Only recently, Nigeria celebrated 25 years of uninterrupted democracy, the longest in the chequered history of the nation. For this feat, we must always remember and commend the strident efforts of the heroes of modern democracy in Nigeria, whose unflinching commitment to nationhood reinforced the foundation and bolstered the pillars of our nation’s democracy, signposting the end of political instability in Nigeria characterized by military incursions.

“From the long list of heroes, I take the honour of mentioning Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, Sir Alex Ekwueme, Alh. Abubakar Rimi, Chief Solomon Lar, Chief Gani Fawehinmi of blessed memory, Prof. Woke Soyinka, late Chief Bola Ige, Col. Abubakar  Dangiwa Umar (rtd), Alh. Dr. Balarabe Musa, Comrade Shehu Sani, Chief Frank Kokori, and of course not forgetting our current President and Commander-in-Chief, His Excellency Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“There’s no denying that Nigeria is yet to attain its full potential. Amid our abundant human and natural resources, we are still bedeviled with enormous economic, political and social challenges.

“But in spite of our numerous challenges, we have remained a united, strong and vibrant nation, poised for a much greater future. We are not yet where we hoped to be, but we must celebrate the journey so far; even as we brace up for the long, arduous road ahead. Nation building is not a specific task with fixed timelines and a terminal point; rather, it is a complex lifelong obligation requiring the absolute loyalty, patriotism and commitment of all citizens,” Onjeh stated.

Onjeh, who was the APC senatorial candidate for Benue South, further commended President Tinubu for re-introducing the old national anthem, noting that its letters and spirit captures the true essence of our coexistence as a nation.

Onjeh added that if all Nigerians took the time to critically listen to the salient message of the re-introduced national anthem, they will better appreciate the fact that it was well envisioned to be a binding force for Nigeria and Nigerians.

Although admitting the reintroduced national anthem is not an immediate solution to the myriad socio-economic and political woes bedeviling Nigeria, Onjeh expressed the view that reciting the national anthem was capable of giving all Nigerians a sense of reassurance, while equally strengthening our confidence as a people that we will surmount all our challenges someday and arrive at the promised land. He added that all the nations of the world advance only through the patriotic disposition of their citizens.

“Those who captured Nigeria’s old national anthem took into cognizance that any multi-religious, multi-tribal and multi-ethnic entity like ours is prone to various civil upheavals which may threaten the unity of the nation and claim several human lives. But because they cherished our heterogeneity, they made an honest and patriotic prayer for the future of the country bearing in mind that our tribes and tongues actually do differ.

“The second stanza of the re-introduced national anthem makes a bold statement to the world that our national flag shall be a symbol that truth and justice reigns, in order to hand unto our children a banner without stain.  Unfortunately, as it stands, the banner that we are handing over to the future generations of Nigerians is highly tainted with the tears and blood of the many victims of societal injustice,” stated Onjeh.

The former fiery student activist and past President of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) and the West Africa Students’ Union (WASU), stated that as someone who had long been in the forefront of the vanguard against oppression and victimization in the country, he is particularly touched by the wordings of the third stanza of the re-introduced national anthem, which offered a solemn prayer to God to help us build a nation where no man is oppressed. Onjeh opined that on the contrary, the majority of Nigerians, especially the teeming masses, are today being perpetually oppressed, suppressed and enslaved by the ruling class.

While urging all Nigerians to enthusiastically play their roles in nation building; Onjeh highlighted patriotism, hard work, honesty, diligence and sacrifice for a good cause as some of the few ways in which citizens can contribute their quotas to nation building.

“I further wish to use this medium to urge all Nigerians to continue to keep faith with the nation’s political process. We must not be hoodwinked by the antics of all the individuals and organizations that constituted themselves into clogs in the wheels of our democratic process but unfortunately turned out to reap the most benefit from the same system; especially those that participated actively in the annulment of the June 12, 1993 Presidential Election, popularly adjudged to be the freest and fairest election in the history of Nigeria, and undeniably won by the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Abiola, arguably the greatest martyr of the struggle for democracy in Nigeria. It’s against this backdrop that we must acknowledge former President Muhammadu Buhari, for recognizing June 12 as our national democracy day.

“Nigerians must not lose sight of these individuals and organizations, as we must continue to shut them and their cronies out of our political system until the system is strictly dominated by progressives. We know that there are still vestiges of these inglorious antidemocratic cabals littering our political space, and they are still the ones posing major setbacks to the healthy growth and development of our democracy, as well as our national progress,” he said.

Onjeh commends FG’s renewed drive for council autonomy

Chieftain of the All Progressives Congress(APC) Comrade Daniel Onjeh has expressed firm support for the renewed drive of the Federal Government under  President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for full financial and administrative autonomy for the 774 local governments.

Onjeh, who has long been an advocate of local government autonomy, stated that it was the surest way for development to permeate to the grassroots.

The former Benue South senatorial candidate made this known in a statement on Monday in reaction to the lawsuit instituted last week by the Federal Government  against the 36 Governors at the Supreme Court.

The former Chairman Governing Board of PRODA, Enugu, further stated local government autonomy has been on the front burner of national discourse for quite some time, stating any government that achieves it will endear itself permanently to the people.

He argued LG autonomy will enable the citizens at the grassroots to take full ownership of the governance of their respective communities.

While commending the Ninth Senate for its assiduous efforts in passing the LG Autonomy Bill, Onjeh stated that the bill was scuttled by Governors in the last administration by their deliberate refusal to mobilise at least two-thirds of the Houses of Assembly to ascent to the bill in line with the requirements of the constitution.

The former President of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) urged Nigerians to rise up this time around and take the advocacy for LG autonomy to a new pedestal.

“At this stage, we must tell ourselves the truth, regardless of political party affiliation. The challenge of Nigeria’s development lies hugely in the dysfunctional and inefficient local government administration. If we can achieve full local government autonomy, then we are fully on course to resolving all Nigeria’s development quagmires,” stated Onjeh.

Describing the Joint State/LG Accounts as a complete aberration and alien to Nigeria’s constitution, Onjeh noted that the challenge of wanton corruption, diversion and misappropriation of local government funds by some state governors will be squarely addressed through the grant of full autonomy to the local governments.

“The constitution of Nigeria recognizes the Federal, State and Local Government as the three tiers of government, which should individually draw funds for their operations directly from the Federation Account. The establishment of Joint State/Local Government Accounts is unconstitutional and must be promptly confined to the trash bin of history, if the local government must access the requisite funding to carryout any meaningful development.

“The creation of Joint State/Local Government Accounts has become a huge conduit pipe for many corrupt and selfish state governors to pauperize the local governments under them, and turn the local government Chairpersons to errand boys and girls who must dance to every tune of the governor in order to access meager funds for grassroots development,” he argued.

Onjeh congratulates reinstated Kano Emir Sanusi

Former Chairman, Governing Board of the Projects Development Institute (PRODA), Enugu, Comrade Daniel Onjeh, has felicitated with His Royal Highness Sanusi Lamido Sanusi CFR, on his reinstatement today as the Emir of Kano Emirate Council by Governor Abba Yusuf.

In a statement, Onjeh argued although royal fathers are expected to eschew partisanship in their stewardship and approach to issues generally,  whenever the occasion demands, they must rise up and speak on behalf of the people they represent.

Onjeh further stated that any attempt to gag or straitjacket any traditional leader will be totally undemocratic because as citizens, they also enjoy fundamental rights as guaranteed by relevant sections of the Constitution.

The senatorial candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for Benue South in the 2023 general elections, stated that in recent times, our traditional leaders, including the emirs and chiefs, are mostly very educated people, with some of them being notable professionals with impressive track records in their respective fields of endeavour before coming to serve their people in the traditional council.

He added that some traditional leaders have also served their societies for very long, therefore they are experienced enough to contribute to the development of the society.

“How can we expect someone of His Royal Highness Sanusi Lamido Sanusi’s education, training, experience and exposure, a consummate economist and former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, not to lend his voice to topical issues like the economy of Nigeria? In fact, he owes the country the patriotic responsibility of speaking up whenever things are going awry, or when anything threatens the peace, unity and development of the nation,” stated Onjeh.

While urging other emirs and traditional rulers to always feel free to contribute their decent quotas to topical national issues rather than dwelling exclusively on local issues within their traditional councils, Onjeh noted that the world is now a global village, hence the scope of work of members of the traditional institutions should transcend settling communal disputes, to anything that will contribute to the safety, welfare and wellbeing of their wards and communities at large.

According to Onjeh, the control which the various state governments have over traditional rulers is for supervisory purposes, and not for vindictiveness.

“Indeed, the control of state governments over their tradition institutions is also to provide checks and balances, so that erring traditional rulers can be called to order or be disciplined accordingly. So when traditional rulers have done something wrong, it will be clear to the members of the society that they have done something wrong and deserve to be reprimanded. Such control must not include when a traditional ruler is expressing his honest opinion on what Nigeria ought to be, or what his society needs to be like,” stated Onjeh.

Onjeh, who is a former fiery student activist and one-time President of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), further stated that the case of Emir Sanusi’s sack and subsequent reinstatement is clear proof that no matter how long justice is suppressed, it will certainly prevail in the end.

He added that it is a good lesson to all authorities who make arbitrary laws that they intend to wield as the big stick against dissenting voices.

“What has just happened in the case of Emir Sanusi is very good for our democracy, because it has further established that any anti-people law enacted by a previous parliament, can be upturned by a succeeding one,” he stated.

  • Leave Alia out of my ultimatum to Ganduje, APC NWC – Onjeh

Leave Alia out of my ultimatum to Ganduje, APC NWC – Onjeh

2003 All Progressives Congress(APC) Benue South senatorial candidate, Comrade Daniel Onjeh, has told suspended Benue APC Chairman Augustine Agadato stop trying to link Governor Hyacinth Alia, with the seven-day ultimatum he recently gave to the APC National Chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, and the party’s National Working Committee, to eattend to his petition on anti-party activities against Agada or resign.

Onjeh said he stands firmly by his ultimatum to Gandujue and the APC NWC, claiming his decision resonates with all the progressives within the Benue APC.

He said the articles and audiovisuals circulated online with the title: “Alia, Onjeh move against Ganduje, call for APC Chairman, NWC immediate resignation” was another propaganda taken too far.

Speaking through Prince Maxwell Ogiri, the Director of Media for the Onjeh Campaign Organisation (OCO), Comrade Onjeh, further alleged the publication bares the imprints of a member of the House of Representatives.

“We have ample evidence at our disposal to support my claim of the source of the publication. I therefore humbly call on the general public to completely discountenance and disregard the fictitious story and its promoters.

“The informed members of the public can attest to the fact that no mainstream news media; whether print, electronic or online, established on a foundation of ethical journalism, published or broadcasted the story because they know that it was fake,” Ogiri stated.

Onjeh stated that the ultimate aim of the crafters was to divert public attention from the core issues unsettling the APC in Benue State and sow the seed of discord and disaffection between Governor Alia and Ganduje with other members of the party’s NWC.

He charged Agada to leave Alia out of the issue, and answer the pertinent questions he raised in his petition before the APC National Working Committee.

The former Chairman, Governing Board of PRODA, Enugu, further stated that at no time did the Governor summon any meeting with him, Chief Barnabas Gemade, Hon. Emmanuel Jime to discuss or scheme the resignation or sack of Ganduje or any of the APC NWC members.

“I further wish to state that Onjeh was bold enough to express his grouses against Agada in his petition before the APC NWC. His recent seven-days ultimatum to the APC National Chairman and NWC was to the effect that they should either treat his petition before them against Mr. Augustine Agada, in line with Sections 13 and 21 of the APC Constitution, 2022 (as amended), or resign their offices. It was not with any malice aforethought, ” he stressed.

Onjeh clarified Alia holds Ganduje in very high esteem and his issue with was nothing personal but had to do with the circumvention of the APC Constitution.

Onjeh receives Benue APC acting chairman, seeks support for Alia

Former All Progressives Congress (APC) senatorial candidate for Benue South, Comrade Daniel Onjeh, has received the acting chairman of the party in Benue Hon. Benjamin Omakolo.

Omakolo, a former councillor, leader of the Benue State Councillors Forum, council secretary and exco member of the Benue APC, was at Onjeh’s residence as part of ongoing drive to unite the party and reposition it.

He declared that as the party chairman, he would ensure that justice reigns so that those who laboured and sacrificed their time, effort, resources and intellect are rewarded to serve as an incentive for others.

He expressed sympathy with Onjeh over what he described as the injustice the former party chairman meted out to him during the last general elections.

“The party,” he declared, “shall not tolerate anti-party activities on my watch. A candidate’s rights must be guaranteed.”

He pledged that he would never do anything to undermine party members, their political interests and aspirations.

After welcoming his guest, Onjeh emphasised the importance of party unity and full support for Governor Hyacinth Alia’s administration.

Onjeh commended the emergence of Omakolo, stating that “due process was followed” and his appointment “follows democratic principles.”

He stressed that the chairmanship position belongs to Benue South, Apa/Agatu in particular, and any attempt by stakeholders from other zones to impose leadership on the party would be “undemocratic.”

Onjeh urged Omakolo to prioritise “healing party members’ grievances, soothing their inflamed passions” and “bringing back party faithful together.”

He highlighted the need for “accommodation” and reaching out to party members from all sides of the current party divide, fostering unity and paving the way for future statewide resounding electoral success.

He acknowledged the challenges Governor Alia has faced due to “vested interests and internal party wranglings” but praised his achievements in areas like prompt salary payments, education, and revitalisation of the economy.

He commended the Governor’s commitment to tackling corruption and empowering Benue residents.

“Governor Alia,” he asserted, had, within less than a year, surpassed the performance of all governors before him since the advent of the Fourth Republic in 1999.”

Onjeh offered support to Omakolo and expressed confidence in his ability to unite the party.

He called upon all party members to stand together for the “ultimate benefit of Benue people” and Governor Alia’s success in office.

  • Onjeh: House invitation of Gov. Alia’s aides over LG matters unlawful, a witch-hunt

Onjeh: House invitation of Gov. Alia’s aides over LG matters unlawful, a witch-hunt

Former senatorial candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the Benue South in 2023 elections, Comrade Daniel Onjeh, has condemned the invitation extended to some aides of Benue Governor Hyacinth Alia by the House of Representatives’ Committee on Public Petitions over the alleged misappropriation of N20 billion Benue local government funds.

He dismissed the invitation as a mere extension of their scheme to discredit Governor Alia.

In a statement on Tuesday, Onjeh accused members of the Benue National Assembly Caucus of orchestrating the invitation as part of a larger plot to disparage and distract Alia.

He said the Benue NASS Caucus was only amplifying the ululations of disgruntled stakeholders in the State, who he said are finding it difficult to accept and adjust to the new order of governance in Benue State.

Alia, he said, has introduced judicious utilisation of the state’s statutory allocations and revenues as against the old order of sharing monthly allocations amongst the elites and stakeholders.

“Fr. Alia has introduced a total departure from the old order of sharing monthly allocations amongst stakeholders. We know exactly what they are feeling, but they just have to accept and endure it because Fr. Alia is adopting the bottom-top approach to governance.

“The elites and stakeholders have had their fair share in the past; Fr. Alia is now determined to offer a new lease of life to the long-neglected Benue masses. That’s why he can now pay salaries, pensions and gratuities regularly in the State.

“Meanwhile, the projects that the governor’s detractors are making so much fuss over all have time lags. It’s not like when a government policy or project is pronounced and commissioned, it must be fully implemented on the same day, even though it might have officially commenced.

Why are they in such a hurry, after all, Fr. Alia has actually just started the re-engineering of Benue,” Onjeh stated.

“The Benue APC National Assembly Caucus,” Onjeh stated, “had not concealed its plot to discredit Governor Alia for whatever they hoped to achieve. For months now, they have embarked on a coordinated relentless attack on the Governor.

“They used his appointment of caretaker committee chairmen and councillors for the 23 local government areas in Benue State as an excuse to launch their smear and slander campaign against the Governor.”

He accused Senator Abba Moro of sponsoring a motion, which he described as partisan and self-serving motives in the Senate titled: “Urgent need to halt the erosion of democracy: The dissolution of elected councils in Benue State,” stating “Nobody has heard of the Motion again because senators eventually came to terms with the reality surrounding it.”

In countering Moro’s Motion, Onjeh stressed that in the first place, Governor Alia did not dissolve any democratically elected LG Executive but it was the Benue House of Assembly that acted within the purview of its powers by recommending the suspension of the elected local government executives found complicit in financial impropriety and mismanagement.

The Governor, he said, only complied by implementing the recommendation.

Onjeh stressed Moro’s call for the withholding of Benue LG funds was based on the flawed premise that the State Government wrongfully dissolved elected LG Executives.
