Your attacks on Alia all about 2027, Onjeh blasts Benue NASS caucus

All Progressives Congress(APC) chieftain Comrade Daniel Onjeh has cautioned the Venue National Assembly caucus led by Senate Minority Leader Abba Moro to stop playing politics with lives of Benue people.

He was reacting to the briefing by the Benue NASS Caucus last Wednesday where they denounced the dissolution of elected councils in Benin State and appointment of caretaker committees by the State Government.

The Federal lawmakers contended the caretaker committees lacked the legitimacy and political will to tackle the prevalent insecurity at the grassroots level.

Governor Hyacinth Alia had alleged some Benue indigenes invited killer herdsmen from Niger Republic to graze in the State.

The former Chairman of the PRODA Governing Board maintained that the recent statements of the NASS Caucus were merely an extension of their coordinated attacks on Alia to discredit him in the eyes of the public.

He advised them to face their jobs as federal lawmakers, adding that it was unbecoming of the federal parliamentarians to be playing politics with human lives.

“All through the last administration of Mr. Samuel Ortom in Benue State, there were reported cases of serial herdsmen attacks on villages in Benue State. Even though at some point, we had ‘democratically-elected’ local government executives in Benue State, the former governor, Mr. Ortom, was still not releasing funds to the local governments.

“But Sen. Moro didn’t see anything wrong with the wanton killing by herdsmen across Benue State at the time. It did not occur to him then that it was the non-funding of the local governments by the Ortom administration that was responsible for the dastardly attacks on Benue communities by killer herders. He found no reason to condemn the Ortom administration because they were both of the same party, the PDP. But suddenly, he now found his voice under the APC administration of Rev. Fr. Alia,” Onjeh said.

He pointed out security forces were operating in Benue, providing reliable information on insecurity in the state.

He wondered if the Benue NASS Caucus derived their information from the statutory security forces or they were only speaking from the figments of their imagination.

He  urged the federal legislators to reveal any information they may be concealing regarding the root cause of the escalating insecurity in the state.

“The reliable information that Rev. Fr. Alia has received from the security forces as the cause of the spike in insecurity across the state is different from what the federal lawmakers are alleging.

“So, could it be that there is something the NASS Caucus knows, which we the Benue people do not know, as the true cause of the deteriorating insecurity in the state? If Sen. Moro and his co-travellers in the Benue NASS Caucus are holding back some secrets, now is the time for them to kindly reveal it,” Onjeh stated.

Onjeh, who was the APC senatorial candidate for Benue South in the 2023 General Elections, further stated that no administration in Benue State since 1999 had suffered the level of distraction like Alia administration where members of his party and the opposition have teamed up against him practically from the moment of his being sworn into office.

Onjeh alleged that the NASS Benue Caucus plans to disparage, discredit and distract Alia’s administration to stop him from delivering on his campaign promises to the Benue people.

“Yet, Fr. Alia has achieved much more than any of the past governors of the state since the start of the Fourth Republic. What most of them presented to Benue people as rocket science, Rev. Fr. Alia has been able to achieve seamlessly from the inception of his administration.

“Now, they will want to say that payment of salaries and pensions is nothing, but hitherto, they made Benue people believe it was an insurmountable challenge.

“Rev. Fr. Alia was able to fix that lingering problem in no time. Therefore, it is a very huge achievement. Indeed, civil servants are the life and soul of the public service, and if you don’t pay them their salaries and wages, you diminish their spirit and reduce their capacity and efficiency, thereby affecting the delivery of government policies and programs,” Onjeh stressed.

Onjeh urged the Benue NASS caucus to note that the Benue people were only concerned about who would deliver the dividends of democracy to them, to bring them out of the woods, which is what Alia is doing.

Onjeh advocates LG, judicial autonomy, state police to tackle insecurity

Former All Progressives Congress (APC) Benue South senatorial candidate Comrade Daniel Onjeh has commended President Bola Tinubu and members of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum for agreeing to initiate the creation of state police while urging them to adopt a multi-pronged approach.

In a statement on Saturday , Onjeh advocated a holistic strategy that goes beyond the singular implementation of state police, arguing that a multi-faceted crisis demands a multi-pronged response.

The former Chairman of  the Governing Board of PRODA, Enugu, painted a stark picture of current security landscape riddled with kidnapping, terrorism and other violent conflicts.

He emphasised the ineffectiveness of piecemeal solutions, highlighting the need for a comprehensive strategy that tackles the root causes of these issues.

According to him: “When local government area councils invest the resources that will accrue to them from their autonomy on projects in their communities, they will provide jobs to the teeming unemployed youths in the country and reduce hardship and hopelessness that makes them susceptible to the lure of criminal gangs, bandits, and terrorist groups. Mass employment will reduce insecurity across the land,.”

He stated that local government autonomy will deepen democracy, especially at the grassroots, as it will strengthen citizens’ faith in the democratic process, thereby increasing their participation in the process.

He pointed out the Federal Government is overstretched, while the performance of most Governors leave much to be desired.

But he argued by their very nature, the local governments are better equipped to detect and contain many security challenges before they escalate.

The decline in the autonomy of local governments in Nigeria, Onjeh noted, is consequent upon the Supreme Court ruling of 2002, and the nation has witnessed an upsurge in insecurity ever since.

He underscored the importance of an independent and efficient judiciary in upholding the rule of law and deterring criminal activity.

He argued that judicial autonomy, free from undue political influence and executive interference, will ensure swift and fair administration of justice, fostering a sense of security and accountability in the citizenry.

Onjeh further stated that the proposed reform of the judiciary should jettison the absolute immunity governors currently enjoy.

He proposed that the reform should allow the suing of Governors for offenses bordering on human rights abuse.

“While Governors may be exempted from prosecution on corruption charges during their tenures in office, they should not escape prosecution for human rights abuses; and when they are convicted, they should serve their sentences immediately after the expiration of their tenure,” Onjeh argued.

These measures, Onjeh believes, will allay citizens’ fears of governors using their state’s police force to suppress opposition and silence dissenting voices.

While acknowledging the potential benefits of state police in addressing local security concerns, Comrade Onjeh cautions against viewing it as a standalone solution. He emphasized the need for robust safeguards and proper implementation mechanisms to prevent potential abuse of power (particularly by governors) and ensure effective collaboration with federal security agencies.

The former President of  National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) stressed that local government and judiciary autonomy must complement the establishment of state police.

He envisioned a system where empowered local governments will collaborate with state police forces, all operating under the oversight of an independent judiciary, creating a robust security architecture responsive to the needs of the people.

This three-pronged reform, Onjeh asserted, should be instituted at the same time, as they would pass through the same legislative process.

That, he maintained, will save millions of naira of taxpayers’ money that will otherwise be spent if the reforms were put through the works separately.

“But if our youths are empowered, they can further assist the security forces in resisting the infiltrating criminal elements. There is an adage in Hausa Language that says, ‘da dan gari akkanchi gari,’ meaning, the mission of an intruder cannot be accomplished without the active support of an insider,” Onjeh stated.

The APC chieftain was however strongly of the view that tackling insecurity still required addressing its root causes, such as poverty, unemployment and lack of opportunities.

Onjeh urged the Federal Government to invest in programmes that empower communities (particularly those in rural areas), create jobs, and promote social justice, thereby reducing the vulnerabilities that make individuals susceptible to criminal activities.

He advocated open communication, community engagement, respect for human rights and fostering a sense of shared responsibility and ownership in combating insecurity.

Onjeh accuses APC NWC of bias over allegations against embattled Agada

Benue South senatorial candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Comrade Daniel Onjeh has accused the National Working Committee (NWC) of the ruling party of bias in the handling of the allegations against embattled Benue APC chair Augustine Agada.

In a six-page reminder to the NWC through the party’s National Chairman dated February 6, Onjeh expressed concerns that 11 days after he filed a petition on alleged Agada’s anti-party activities during the last general elections, he was yet to receive any official response.

“I humbly wish to draw your attention to Article 21 (DISCIPLINE OF PARTY MEMBERS), Section 21.3, (Disciplinary Procedure), Subsections i-v of the APC Constitution (as amended 2022), which stipulates that the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party has seven (7) days after receipt of a petition against a member, to constitute a fact-finding Committee to investigate the matter and report back to the NWC, before subsequently stepping down the matter to a Disciplinary Committee within 14 days, to hear and determine the allegation.

”However, it has been 11 clear days after I filed the petition referred to above; yet, no official from the National Secretariat of the party has formally reached out to me, and no circular has been issued to the effect of my petition as well,” Onjeh began.

He said he considered it a huge aberration the only reaction so far on the matter from the national leadership came off the pages of newspapers, stating that the National Secretariat also set aside the suspension of Agada by ward officials at his Ehaje 1 Ward in Owukpa, Ogbadibo Local Government Area.

Onjeh was of the view that if the APC NWC had authorised the statement setting aside the suspension of Agada, then it had over-stepped the boundaries of its constitutional powers because the APC constitution recognises the relevant adjudicatory organs of the party vested with responsibilities at every stage.

“You are probably aware that I copied the Ward Executives of Ehaje 1 in Owukpa, in the petition which I sent to your esteemed office, and they acted expeditiously on it because they were already very conversant with the issues I raised therein.

”They were living witnesses to the anti-party activities of the suspended state chairman, Mr. Agada, against my candidature, which led to our party losing in all the presidential, senatorial, and House of Representatives elections conducted in his polling unit on February 25, 2023,” Onjeh alleged.

The former Chairman of the Projects Development Institute (PRODA), Enugu, Governing Board further stated if Agada feels strongly that the APC Ward Executives of Ehaje 1, Owukpa, acted wrongly or unfairly in suspending him on allegations of anti-party, he should have appealed to the Local Government Executive Committee.

According to him: “Our constitution provides that it is only when any party in a case is not satisfied with the decision taken by the State Executive Committee, that the matter may be escalated to the National Working Committee.

”The APC constitution equally states that even when the NWC receives a complaint, it shall not deliberate on it before sending it to a Fact-Finding Committee for investigation, before stepping down the findings to a Disciplinary Committee.

”It is only at that stage that the NWC may take a final decision on the matter, to either uphold or set aside the decision of the Ward Executives. That is what our laws say,” Onjeh argued.

The former President of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) stated considering the endorsement of an acting chairman for the APC Benue Chapter at a SEC meeting convened at the instance of Governor Alia, the party at the national level should endorse the SEC’s choice and make an official pronouncement to that effect.

Time for full-scale governance, Onjeh tells Alia after Supreme Court ruling

The All Progressives Congress(APC) senatorial candidate for Benue South Comrade Daniel Onjeh, has congratulated Benue Governor Hyacinth Alia; his Deputy, Dr. Sam Ode (mni) and the entire good people of the State, over the Supreme Court judgement that upheld their victory in the March 13 gubernatorial elections in the State.

In a statement, Onjeh described the Supreme Court ruling as victory for democracy in Benue State as it upheld the divine mandate initially given to the current leadership in Benue State by voters.

Onjeh added that now that all issues regarding the last gubernatorial election in Benue State have been finally laid to rest, it was time for Alia to focus on the full-scale governance of Benue State.

“Although I know that Fr. Alia had not really been distracted by the court proceedings, as his commitment to the governance of Benue State under his administration has never wavered or assumed the back seat. In fact, governance in Benue State has undeniably assumed a new unprecedented pedestal under the current leadership of Fr. Alia.

“Salaries, pensions and other entitlements of government workers which had hitherto been a mirage in Benue State, are now being paid  regularly. The state is equally witnessing robust investments in road, water, electricity and rural infrastructure, while formidable partnerships are being brokered consistently with both local and foreign investors towards fast-tracking the socio-economic development of the state.

“The leadership of Fr. Alia has brought much relief to the Benue State people in the last seven months. But with the favourable judgement of the Supreme Court yesterday, the governor can now settle down to consolidate his efforts towards facilitating the full recovery of the state’s economy, to pave the way for his ongoing reforms to gain sufficient traction before the end of his first term in office.

“Furthermore, with yesterday’s ruling, it is expected of all sincere political actors in the state to close ranks and work in synergy and harmony, towards supporting Fr. Alia’s Strategic Development Plan for a Greater Benue,” Onjeh stated.

The former Board Chairman of PRODA, Enugu  enjoined all political and apolitical actors alike in the state, to rally round Gov. Alia, as the time for politics in the current dispensation was over, and it’s now strictly time to advance the people-centred governance which Fr. Alia has commenced in the state.

“On behalf of my family, friends and political associates, I once again congratulate the people’s Governor of Benue State, the Very Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Alia, his Deputy, Dr. Sam Ode, and all the good people of Benue State, over their collective victory yesterday at the Supreme Court.

“I humbly appeal to all Benue people to continue to lift the State Governor and his Deputy in prayers before the Almighty for divine wisdom, protection and wellbeing. I also urge all Benue citizens to commit themselves to supporting the laudable initiatives of the current administration in the state, and to gladly contribute their meaningful quotas in any capacity, towards the state’s development,” Onjeh said.

Orphans, widows pray for Tinubu, Alia as Onjeh distributes palliatives

In continuation of his supervision of the distribution of palliatives in Benue South by the Benue State Government, the All Progressives Congress (APC) senatorial candidate for Benue South in 2023, Comrade Daniel Onjeh has visited and delivered palliatives to widows and two orphanages in Otukpo, the administrative capital of Benue South.

Onjeh met with the widows under the auspices of their various widows’ associations and visited orphans at the Children of Mary Orphanage and Motherless Babies Home at the GRA, and the Restorer Of Paths Care Foundation Orphanage/Rehabilitation Home located at Otada.

Speaking during the visits, Onjeh informed that he was merely a messenger as the gesture was an initiative of the President Bola Tinubu-led Federal Government to support the needy, less privileged and the poorest of the poor in the society in coping with the prevailing harsh economy, which is compounded by the short-term effects of the  policy on fuel subsidy removal.

The APC chieftain also stated Benue Governor, Dr. Hyacinth Alia, has honestly and diligently implemented the policy  to the latter in Benue State by fairly and equitably distributing all the palliatives he received from the Federal Government across the three senatorial districts of the state, to the benefit of the teeming masses.

Onjeh further stated that he opted to lead the visit to the widows and orphans to ensure that all the relief materials earmarked for them actually get to them, as they constitute a very special and dear category of the needy in any society.

The former Chairman of the Governing Board of PRODA, Enugu offered words of encouragement to the beneficiaries, stating that the current economic situation in the country will improve sooner than expected, having a firm belief that the policy direction of the current administration of President Tinubu holds great promise which will soon be delivered to Nigerians.

Onjeh argued the policy on fuel subsidy removal will favour all Nigerians in the mid and long terms, as hitherto under the subsidy regime, only a few individuals and cabals in the oil industry were benefitting stupendously at the expense of the generality of Nigerians.

Speaking to journalists during the visits,  he appealed to all State actors, well-to-do individuals and corporate organisations to extend some support to the needy, vulnerable and less privileged in the society, to enable them cope with the current economic hardship in the country occasioned by the declining global economy and exacerbated by the hike in fuel price due to the immediate effects of the policy on withdrawal of fuel subsidy.

The palliatives delivered by Onjeh to the widows and orphans were several 50kg bags of rice and corn, along with cash tokens.

Receiving the relief materials on behalf of one of the widows’ associations, the Founder of Daughters of Zion Widows Organization, Mrs. Janet Ada Onoja, expressed deep gratitude to President Tinubu and Governor Alia, for reaching out to them with the much desired relief at these critical times. She also prayed for the success of the APC Administrations at both the Federal and the Benue State levels.

Speaking on behalf of the orphans, the Founder of Restorer of Paths Care Foundation Orphanage/Rehabilitation Home, Mrs. Enuwa Efada Soo, said the palliatives delivered to them will go a long way in supporting the health, nutrition and general wellbeing of the children, while thanking Com. Daniel Onjeh for availing himself to render the selfless service to his people.

One of the children at her orphanage, Master Emmanuel from Agatu, offered copious prayers for long life and divine blessings upon both President Tinubu and Governor Alia. While he prayed for more palliatives to come from the Federal Government, he equally asked God to grant President Tinubu the wisdom to change Nigeria for good, and that a new Nigeria should be birthed under President Tinubu.

Onjeh has been supervising the distribution of FG’s palliatives in Benue South since January 1 on the directive of Alia.

The central distribution took place on New Year’s day at the Ahmadu Bello Way, Otukpo. Onjeh said he’s personally going round the orphanages and widows’ associations in Otukpo, to ensure that he delivers all the palliatives earmarked for them.

Onjeh hails ‘exemplary, servant leader’ SGF Akume at 70

The All Progressives Congress (APC) 2023 senatorial candidate for Benue South and former Chairman, Governing Board of the Projects Development Institute (PRODA), Enugu, Comrade Daniel Onjeh, has showered accolades on the Secretary to the Government of the Federation Dr George Akume at 70.

In a statement, Onjeh described Sen. Akume as an exceptional leader, astute statesman, quintessential public servant and consummate Nigerian politician.

“A perfect gentleman, core grassroots politician and undoubtedly the most capped politician today from the old Middle Belt Region of Nigeria, Sen. Akume served as the Governor of Benue State from 1999 to 2007. He made history as the first Governor of the state to successfully complete two consecutive tenures in office,” he began.

Onjeh further reeled out Sen. Akume’s sterling career in the public service to include representing  Benue North-West Senatorial District from 2007 to 2019 and serving as Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs and Special Duties under the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari.

“Today, Sen. Akume occupies the hallowed office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, where he serves as the chief bureaucrat of the Federal Republic, and frontline adviser to the Presidency. His office drives policy formulation, harmonization, implementation and monitoring of the various Federal Ministries, Department and Agencies. These are in addition to scores of sensitive federal parastatals domiciled in the Office of the SGF, making it the rallying point of the federal government,” Onjeh stated.

Onjeh further stated that he was privileged and honoured to meet Akume for the first time in 2002 shortly after his inauguration as the 20th President of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS).

“He was then the governor of my state, Benue, and the first state Governor (perhaps the only one) that hosted me and my set of NANS National Executives. He offered me further support in the course of my stewardship as NANS President and subsequently as President of the West Africa Students’ Union (WASU),” he recalled.

He said ever since, Akume has remained a father, leader, role model and mentor.

The APC chieftain further stated that when he ventured into partisan politics in 2010, Akume was there to offer him wise counsel and support and has been instrumental to all he has accomplished thus far in the field of politics.

“He always welcomes me with open arms to his home, and I’m honoured to maintain a cordial relationship with the other members of his immediate family,” Onjeh added.

Describing Akume as a man passionate about nurturing leaders, Onjeh stated that there were thousands of other young men and women out there who like himself, have benefitted immensely from Sen. Akume’s political mentorship, and risen to positions of prominence either as elected or as appointed public officials.

“He has brought his unequalled wealth of experience in governance, administration and public service to bear in contributing positively to the development of the country. Sen. Akume Akume is imbued with much wisdom, sound judgment and imitable patience.

“A visionary adherent of inclusive leadership, he unremittingly exudes positive energy, grace and charm wherever he goes; and is an unmistakable embodiment of humility and piety,” he added.

Com. Onjeh further described Akume as a bridge-builder par excellence, who relates effortlessly with people of all gender, ages, classes, tribes, religions and political divides.

Noting Akume does not believe in the accumulation of mundane wealth, Onjeh stated that the elder statesman’s generosity and love for his fellow humans are evident in the lives of countless citizens of Benue State today, adding that he is firmly and constantly in touch with the grassroots, and ever accessible to his people.

“I have repeatedly stated that no politician from the North Central region has made as much sacrifice as Sen. Akume, towards building the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the region. His exceptional leadership, clear vision and steadfastness helped to sustain the structures of the APC for several years as an opposition party in Benue State, before he eventually led the party to clinch the state governorship in the last general elections.”

Onjeh stated Akume first took up a humble appointment as a Land Officer with the Benue State Civil Service, and  moved up steadily through the ranks until 1998, when he voluntarily retired as the Permanent Secretary (Establishments and Management Services) at the Federal Ministry of Education, Lagos State.

Onjeh noted that in the course of Akume’s exemplary public service career, he served as Principal Secretary; Under Secretary and Director of Personnel Management at the Benue State Governor’s Office. He was also a Sole Administrator of Idah Local Government Council (currently in Kogi State); Sole Administrator of Gboko Local Government Council in 1991 and later appointed Director of Protocol, Government House, Makurdi, in 1992.

Onjeh further stated that at 70, Akume is still very strong, active and passionate about serving his country and humanity in general.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for the Benue South senatorial district in the 2023  elections and former Chairman of the Governing Board of PRODA, Enugu, Comrade Daniel Onjeh, has greeted his constituents and Nigerians for Christmas.

“Christmas is a time for reflection, celebration, and the renewal of hope. It is a reminder of the universal message of love, peace, and goodwill that transcends ethnicity, religion, and political affiliations,” Onjeh stated.

He acknowledged the challenges faced by the district, including security concerns and economic hardship.

Nevertheless, he encouraged optimism and emphasised the resilient spirit of Nigerians and Benue South people in particular.

“Though we may face difficulties, the true essence of Christmas lies in our unwavering faith and our strength in unity. Let us not allow the shadows of hardship to dim the light of hope within us. This Christmas, let us draw inspiration from the spirit of Christ and commit to fostering peace, compassion, and a renewed sense of purpose within our communities,” he expressed.

Onjeh wished everyone a blessed Christmas filled with joy, love and the unwavering spirit of peace.

“From the bottom of my heart, I wish you all a merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year. May the blessings of this season fill your homes and hearts with warmth, happiness, and renewed hope,” he declared.

Contribute to national development, Onjeh urges youths at 50th birthday dinner

The week-long 50th birthday celebration of former PRODA Board Chairman, Com. Daniel Onjeh, ended in pomp and pageantry last Sunday with a grand dinner at the Abuja Continental Hotel, (formerly Sheraton Hotel and Towers, Abuja).

The event attracted Benue Deputy Governor Sam Ode; who represented Governor Fr. Hyacinth Alia, as the Special Guest of Honour.

Nigeria’s former Ambassador to Russia, Prof. Steve Ugbah was the Chairman with other dignitaries including the House of Representatives member for Ado/Okpokwu/Ogbadibo Federal Constituency, Hon. Philip Agbese; the former Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Dame Pauline Tallen; former National Vice Chairman (North West) of the APC, Dr. Salihu Moh Lukman; the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Students’ Affairs, Com. Sunday Asefon and Deputy Benue Speaker Hon. Lami Danladi.

Also at the occasion were the National Commandant, Peace Corps of Nigeria, Prof. Dickson Akoh; Benue Commissioner for Finance, Chief Michael Oglegba; Benue Commissioner for Water Resources and Environment, Hon. Odoh Ugwu; the former House of Reps Member for Ado/Okpokwu/Ogbadibo Federal Constituency, Hon. Otta Francis; former MD/CEO of Nigeria Export Promotion Zones Authorities (NEPZA) Engr. Nongov, amongst several others.

The mood in the auditorium was generally cheery and upbeat; as it afforded old friends, comrades and political associates an ample opportunity to reunite after very long intervals.

Guests at the event were thrilled to scintillating musical performances by two of Nigeria’s top gospel musicians, Solomon Lange and Chris Morgan respectively. There were other musical performances, as well as poetry and cultural dance to entertain the large audience.

Onjeh stated that he’d held brief for youths for a very long time.

He added that judging by the official age that defines youth – either by the Nigerian National Youth Policy or the United Nations Charter, he had since crossed the youth bracket.

He said the peculiar socio-political and economic indicators of Nigeria and the need to constantly engage the political actors, were the reasons he still held up for the youths long after serving as NANS President as well as his stewardship on other youth-related platforms.

Onjeh observed that now that he’s at the fifth floor, it was time for him to finally quit the stage.

In what he termed a valedictory speech to the youths, the former fiery student activist noted he would only watch from the sidelines of activism, and guide the younger generation, as his physical activity at the barricades would henceforth be at the barest minimum.

He charged youths to rise to their responsibility and contribute their decent quotas to the development of the nation.

Onjeh also seized the occasion to admonish the youths, stating that economic hardship was not an excuse for anyone to indulge in crime or to accept failure in life, otherwise so many people who are celebrated today, may not have attained the positions that God has elevated them to in life.

“I recall that as a little boy, my siblings and I hawked bread, Ovaltine, Ogbono and crayfish etc. on the major streets of Kaduna, just in order to support our mother – who was a stark illiterate then – at a time when my dad travelled abroad for further studies,” stated Onjeh.

The celebrant further stated that he gives thanks and glory to God for preserving his life.

Delivering his address, the Chairman of the occasion, Prof. Ugbah, showered copious plaudits on Com. Onjeh, describing him as a man of honour and integrity.

“Here is a man that I’ve known for about twenty years now. Here is a man who has values – for some of us – dreams of possessing. Here is a courageous man, who has been resilient in his pursuit of whatever it is he has set his eyes on,” stated Prof. Ugbah.

INational Commandant, Peace Corps of Nigeria, Prof. Dickson Akoh, observed that the occasion of Onjeh’s 50th birthday offered ample opportunity for genuine reconciliation in the Benue State Chapter of the APC, as it afforded politicians from different sides of the political divides during the last general elections, a congenial atmosphere to interact and broker lasting reconciliation.

Benue Deputy Governor, Dr. Sam Ode, described Onjeh as a very passionate young man who’s imbued with high integrity, and therefore has bright prospects to excel in politics.

He assured Onjeh that his ambition to represent Benue South in the Senate would certainly be actualised in God’s appointment time and prayed that the 2027 general elections will be God’s appointment time for Onjeh to clinch the Benue South Senatorial seat.

    Onjeh’s 50th birthday celebration kick-started on December 13 with a sober reflection.

He subsequently visited the Mother Theresa Children’s Home at Gwarinpa, Abuja as well as the Gwarinpa General Hospital at Life Camp, where he interacted with, and shared gifts with the children and patients respectively.

The other activities including a health awareness walk; a symposium with the theme: “The imperative of deepening democracy and good governance in Nigeria”; the launching of the Funmilayo Fasona and O.J. Dennis Memorial Lectures and the conferment of Awards of Appreciation were all shifted to February 2024 for convenience.

Onjeh decries NASS Benue APC stance on Gov Alia, sues for peace

The All Progressives Congress (APC) 2023 senatorial candidate for Benue South and former Chairman, Governing Board of the Projects Development Institute (PRODA), Enugu, Comrade Daniel Onjeh, has expressed disappointment with the stance of the Benue APC National Assembly Caucus on Governor Hyacinth Alia.

The caucus presented its resolutions at a briefing recently.

But in a statement, Onjeh described the resolution as hasty and vindictive and the allegations against Governor Alia baseless.

Onjeh reminded the NASS APC caucus Alia had barely spent six months in office and had been running the state on his predecessor’s budget.

He also pointed out the Governor, whom economic and financial expedience and propriety had compelled to drive Ortom’s policies to conclusion, has just presented his first budget to the Benue Assembly, which holds great promise for the development of the State.

“As representatives of the people, it would be honourable on the part of the NASS caucus to question the previous administration’s plunder of the state’s resources without commensurate development, rather than throwing vitriolic remarks at the current administration,” Onjeh stated.

Onjeh added that one of the allegations leveled against Governor Alia in the caucus’s press conference rested on the Governor not picking the national legislators’ calls, a matter which he believes, resides in the realm of personal grievance.

He added that instead of sulking over inane issues, the legislators should commend Alia for delivering good governance and democracy dividends to the Benue people thus far.

He drew the attention of the caucus to the fact that in economics, there exists a time lag between policy formulation and implementation.

Onjeh stressed on the need to allow Governor Alia concentrate his laudable programmes.

He urged the NASS caucus to focus on the issues that matter such as the backlog of unpaid salaries and pension arrears left by the previous administration of Samuel Ortom, which Governor Alia is now forced to resolve and is currently doing so commendably.

He added that it was too early in the day to judge the Governor’s performance and it would be more productive to give him time to deliver on his promises.

Alia, Onjeh argued did not unlawfully dissolve LGA councils and sack their elected officials as the caucus alleged.

Rather, he said the LGA officials were suspended on the strength of the allegations of financial impropriety, misappropriation and mismanagement leveled against them.

This, according to him, was done after the due process of passing the allegations through the Benue Assembly and obtaining the House’s full ascent.

Onjeh urged the public to be wary of the information that the governor’s political traducers broadcast, in order not to be misinformed on important matters regarding the state.

“We cannot all be satisfied at all times in the political space. If you sought any favour from the governor and he was unable to attend to you, perhaps subsequent opportunities would arise in which you will be accommodated. Besides, the governor is also learning on the political side,” Onjeh stated.

Onjeh further opined that the allegations the caucus leveled against Governor Alia were orchestrated, and part of a grand conspiracy to discredit his fledgling administration.

He added: “It is unthinkable and unheard of, that members of our party will join an opposition party to attack and discredit the governor, who is an APC member.”

According to Onjeh, despite, the unwholesome attacks on Governor Alia by the federal legislators, the Governor’s Approval Rating continues to soar.

“Fr. Alia has lived up to his campaign promises and has so far paid Benue State’s workers their dues and entitlements. Retirees in the state are receiving their pension, and the state’s teeming civil servants are receiving their salaries up to date, as and at when due,” Onjeh stated.

He urged the citizens and residents of Benue State to work together to ensure that Governor Alia’s administration (and by implication, the state) succeeds.

“No government would like to be berated over nonpayment of workers salaries and pensions. If it is that easy to pay salaries and pensions to Benue State workers and retirees, previous administrations would have done that to gain commendation from the people, but they all failed,” Onjeh stated.

Onjeh called on the NASS Benue APC caucus to desist from its unwholesome villainisation of their Governor and  concentrate on their jobs of legislation, oversight, and appropriation at the national level.

Regarding the call by the caucus on President Tinubu to intervene in the matter, Onjeh described it as highly unnecessary.

He advised the caucus to repose confidence in the leadership of the SGF, Sen. Dr. George Akume, who had piloted the affairs of the APC in Benue State from its inception to resolve the issue amicably and expeditiously.

Onjeh sued for peace and urged the Benue APC National Assembly Caucus to sheath its sword and come to the table for a truce, so that the party in Benue State can forge ahead as one big happy family.
