According to him, every Nigerian has a role to play, if the recession must end quickly.

Each day, there will be different celebrations depicting us as a people.”

It would be recalled that the Ooni of Ife formally declared the ancient city a Tourism Zone last  February.  The formal opening of Motherland Beckons  Nigerians in Diaspora (NIDO) office at the Enuwa Palace was performed by the Ooni who is also the grand patron of Motherland Beckons, an organisation founded by Otunba Wanle Akinboboye which is dedicated to the promotion of Africa and enhancing linkage between the Diaspora and Africa.

Support the poor, says Ooni at Rotary induction

He stood tall and calm. He also seemed undaunted by the huge task ahead as he mounted the rostrum of the Shell Hall at MUSON Centre, Onikan Lagos to be decorated with the age-long emblem as the District Governor for the next Rotary Year of District 9110, which oversees Lagos and Ogun states.

It was Patrick Ikheloa’s day. It is the wish of every Rotarian to get the number one seat in Rotary. To him, it was a realised dream as the fair-complexioned man from Edo State was all smiles during the installation.

But the event was not just a Rotary affair; it was a gathering of men and women of reputation who are passionate about philanthropy. Among them was the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi.

There was fun in the hall adorned with yellow and blue decorations. What made the occasion significant was that even club members were treated to a red carpet reception before making for their tables.

In a report, the outgoing District Governor, Otunba Bola Onabadejo, outlined his achievements during the past year, even as he solicited support for his successor. He urged Rotary members and the public to extend the same hand of fellowship to Ikheloa.

Expectedly, Oba Ogunwusi entered with a retinue of courtiers who played trumpets, flutes and drums. His shinny cap stood out among them all.

He spoke on the need to love one another, urging all to extend the same hand of fellowship to the downtrodden and other less-privileged persons.

The monarch was inducted as a special ambassador.

A raffle draw was held, where Economy and Business Class tickets to Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates, courtesy of Etihad were won.

    Ooni honours Nkrumah in Ghana

The Ooni of Ife,  Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi (Ojaja II), at the weekend planted a tree of honour in remembrance of Ghana’s first President Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, who he described as a hero of African unity and emancipation.

It was part of activities marking his four-day royal visit to the West African country on the invitation of President John Mahama.

The tree planting  was performed by the Ooni in company of his queen, Wuraola and some notable traditional rulers at the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park (KNMP)  downtown Accra.

The monarch urged the leaders and Africans to always remember the former President not just as a politician but also as a great Pan-Africanist, who dedicated his life to the liberation of Ghana and total emancipation of Africans.

“Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah should always be remembered by all of us in Africa not just because he was a politician or president but more importantly because of his outstanding campaign to liberate this country then called Gold Coast from the colonial rule in 1957.

“This great man was also a Pan-Africanist, who dedicated his whole life to the total emancipation of the entire Africa and that’s why my being here today is so much important to me and my delegation of peace and unity,” Ooni Ogunwusi said.

Nkrumah was overthrown by the military in 1966, nine years after he led his country to freedom in 1957.

He was subsequently exiled in Guinea Conakry, where he lived till his death in 1972, while receiving medical treatment at a hospital in Bucharest, Romania.

  • Community urges Ooni to ensure unity

Community urges Ooni to ensure unity

The Alahun of Ahun in Efon, Ekiti State, Oba Jacob Adelowo, has urged the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi to ensure the continued socio-political and cultural well-being of the Yoruba.

He made the call during a courtesy visit to the Ife monarch recently. He added that the development of Yoruba land should be embraced by well-meaning Nigerians from the Southwest geo-political zone.

Oba Adelowo explained that Yoruba land looks forward to the Ife traditional institution to ensure peace and progress for the people. He said Yoruba people are among the sophisticated ethnic groups in the world.

Oba Adelowo said the people of Ahun who came from Ife centuries ago, hold tenaciously to the strong belief that Ife is the cradle of civilisation, stressing that Ahun and other Yoruba people will continue to seek the blessings of Ife for better life.

He said when Alahun Moka-Moye took members of the Ogbooru Adimula-Ilare Royal House from Ile-Ife to settle at Efon in Ekiti, the historical sojourn led to a well-established cultural tie among the people.

Presenting a book entitled A Brief History of Ahun Efon to the Ooni, Adelowo said: “Alahun gave Efon its present name ‘Efon’ because the people were catching buffalos alive.

“The buffalos usually prevented people from settling on the land and embark on their means of subsistence. Alahun Mokamoya was able to suppress the threat from the rampaging buffalos. In view of this exploit, the place became known as Efon land.”

He added that the socio-cultural and religious links between Ife and Ahun were so enormous that, it will be a disservice to generations yet unborn if the history is not documented for posterity.

“In fact, the Alahun moved from Ife to Ahun with all the monarchical paraphernalia. They are still replete in the Ahun traditional institution in the present circumstance.

“I must say we thank your imperial Majesty for granting this delegation audience. We pray for wisdom, knowledge and understanding for you to play your fatherly role in the Yoruba nation.”

Responding, Ooni Ogunwusi said the visit was timely, adding that he would always respond to whatever would lead to the unity and progress of the entire Yoruba land.

He commended Adelowo, his wife Olori Olayinka who presented the book and other members, noting that the visit was a home-coming visit.

He added that the people should feel free to make their proposals because the unity of the entire Yoruba land could not be superseded by any narrow interest.

  • Ooni of Ife calls for cultural rebirth at UNILAG lecture

Ooni of Ife calls for cultural rebirth at UNILAG lecture

THE Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, has called for cultural rebirth to overcome the country’s multifaceted problems.

He spoke yesterday as the guest lecturer at the University of Lagos School of Postgraduate Studies 2015/2016 Annual Lecture.

The lecture was titled: “Redefining the Role of Traditional Institution for National Development”.

The monarch said the adoption of western culture has led to loss of African values, noting that traditional rulers have been relegated.

He explained that traditional institution, which used to play dominant role before independence, had been incapacitated by the 1999 Constitution.

Ogunwusi said politicians, who ought to defend the institution, refused to fight for it, a situation, he said, led to societal decadence.

“Traditional institution is very important in nation-building because it is closer to the grassroots. The institution was well-recognised in pre-colonial days and during the constitutional development days.

“The various constitutions put forward then recognised the importance of traditional institutions. But unfortunately, the 1999 Constitution whittles the influence of traditional institutions.

“Our political leaders were so afraid to defend the institution, which is closer to the people and where electoral success of any politician in the country is derived.”

The Oba said he would continue to promote the course of traditional institution because it is the bulwark of national growth.

“We will live by example, bring back the values that promote our well-being; the value that enhances peace and progress. It is a place where the people look forward to for solution anytime things went wrong.

“Incidentally, we have everything to make us great but we don’t believe in ourselves; rather you see brother rising against brother, lawlessness in what we do and disobedience to rule and regulation of the country.

“The West cash on our ignorance by adopting those vital things that can make a country great and use them for their own advantage. We are all aware that civilisation started from Africa, but the Blackman sees what they took away from us as fetish.

“There is the urgent need to look inward, particularly those things that our ancestors bestowed on us. They gave us the Ifa, which research has proven that most scientific terms and method use world over were borrowed from it.

“We must support government to attain progress because the government alone cannot do it.  I, therefore, urge leaders to show compassion, love, accommodation toward their people, only then will they not be forgotten,” he said.

The Chairman of the occasion, Mr. Fola Adeola, said the university’s post-graduate studies should be supported in its plans to assist students, who need finance for researches.

He said there were postgraduate students, whose research works have been constrained for lack of fund, adding that it was time special funds be created to help indigent students pursuing scholarship.

Adeola thereafter demonstrated his astuteness as a banker with the way he managed the launch of the N100 million Postgraduate Trust Fund.

Adeola, employing a lot of wit, personally went round the auditorium distributing pledge sheets to visitors and workers of the universities, including principal officers seated on the high table.

This exercise yielded well over N1 million in cheques, pledges and cash from lecturers, which he read out before announcing a N10 million donation on behalf of the Ooni and his friends.
