  • Zone Deputy Senate President to South-East, Kalu tells APC

A former Abia governor, Dr Orji Uzo Kalu, has indicated interest to contest for the position of the Deputy Senate President in the soon to be constituted 9th National Assembly.

Kalu also wants the All Progressives Congress (APC) to zone the position to the South-East in the interest of equity and justice.

The Abia North Senator-elect made the disclosure while speaking with newsmen on Wednesday at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos.

He noted he was aware that the APC, which had the majority in the Senate, had zoned the senate president position to the North-East and the Deputy Senate President to the North-West.

Kalu said: “I am a very loyal party man. The party has zoned the senate presidency position to the North-East and I want to respect the party’s will but the second position is what we are not going to allow to leave the South-East.

“So, as far as I am concerned, in the South-East, I am going to run openly on the floor of the House for the position of Deputy Senate President.

“I am not going to listen to the party neither will I listen to anybody. Nobody that wants to be the Deputy Senate President is more loyal than I am to the party.

“I have suffered for the party and have been called by Nigerians to come out.

“I want the party to respect the will of every other person and I am committed to democracy and contesting on the floor of the House.”

According to him, Article 50 of the Constitution and Article One of the constitution make it clear that the members of the National Assembly in-House can elect their principal officers.

He said it was only fair the position was retained in the South-East, stressin President Muhammadu Buhari and APC Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole, were well aware of this.

“So, if justice must prevail, you have to bring the Senate President from the North-East and you bring the Deputy Senate President to the South-East.

“The chairman of the party is from South-South. The President is from North-West. The Vice-President is from South-West and also the Senate President will come from North-East.

“Whether it is Senators Ahmed Lawal or Alli Ndume, this will be decided on the floor of the House.

“So, for me, the tripod in Nigeria is Ibo, Yoruba and Hausa and we are going to get the deputy senate president and I will fight on the floor of the House like no other person has fought.

“That is not challenging the party but this is about looking for justice.

“Buhari said recently after the elections that he will be addressing issues of injustice and this is part of the issue,” Kalu said.

He further maintained he was qualified for the position having being a former member of the Federal House of Representatives from 1991 to 1993 and also a two-time governor.

Kalu said: “I know the nook and crannies of how legislators operate.

“I have dealt with them and I am not a new comer. So, it is going to be impossible to edge me out or edge a whole zone out by claiming we are new comers.

“What I am fighting for is justice, fair play and for Nigeria to continue to be one. I have suffered in fighting for the unity of the country. They cannot use National Assembly or petty House officers to divide the country.

“I have sweated. All my investments are in the North, in the West and the South and we must protect these things and leave in peace.”

He, however, warned that he would be forced to contest for the position of the Senate President if the APC failed to do the needful.

“I have the capacity for lobbying. I am well known in East, West and North.

“If the party continues this way, I will run for the Senate President if justice is not done to say South-East brings the Deputy Senate President.

“I can assure you that there are over 56 Senators in my kitty now for either the Senate President or the Deputy Senate President that have already signed to what I believe in.

“It is only just to unveil it on the floor of the House,” Kalu added. (NAN)

  • Orji Kalu congratulates Buhari on his re-election

Dr Orji Kalu, the senator-elect, Abia North Senatorial District, said President Muhammadu Buhari deserved his re-election as he has taken Nigeria to enviable heights since he assumed office on May 29, 2015.

In a statement made available to the News Agency of Nigeria, Kalu commended the achievements of the Federal Government under Buhari, describing them as unbeatable and remarkable.

While acknowledging the goodwill of the president, the former governor of Abia, called on politicians to emulate his worthy qualities.

Orji further urged Nigerian leaders to join hands with Buhari in rebuilding Nigeria.

“President Buhari has in the past four years taken Nigeria to enviable heights.

“Nigeria has taken her rightful place in the comity of nations since President Buhari assumed office.

“The All Progressives Congress-led Federal Government has the welfare of the masses as a priority.

“With the victory of President Buhari in the poll, it is obvious that Nigerians are happy with the President,’’ Kalu said.
While commending the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and other stakeholders for ensuring free and fair elections, Kalu urged Nigerians to sustain their support for Buhari and the APC.

  • Orji Kalu defeats Ohuabunwa in Abia

    •Incumbent senator kicks

A former Abia State Governor, Orji-Uzor Kalu, has delivered the Bende Local Government for President Muhammadu Buhari in Saturday’s presidential and National Assembly election in the area.

Also, the senator representing the Abia North, Mao Ohuabunwa of PDP, lost in his reelection’s bid to Kalu of All Progressives Congress (APC).

Buhari polled 9,233 to defeat the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, who polled 6,649.

The returning officer for the presidential election in the area, Prof. Nnennaya Ibiam, announced the result yesterday at the INEC headquarters in  Umuahia, the state capital.

Also, member representing Isikwuuato/ Umunneochi Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, won election for the fourth term.

She was declared winner after polling 14,712 votes to defeat her closest rival, Mr. Ude Achara of PDP, who polled 10,064 votes.

In Bende Federal Constituency, Benjamin Kalu of APC also polled 9,138 to defeat Chimanyaso of PDP, who polled 5,591.

The returning officer for the constituency, Mr. Martin Okoro, declared him winner after announcing the result.

The returning officer for senatorial election, Dr. Charles Anumodu, declared Kalu winner, having polled 31,203 votes to defeat Ohuabunwa, who polled 20,801 votes and the candidate of the All Progressive Grand Alliance, Chief David Ogba, who scored 11,410 votes.

Ohuabunwa, however, rejected the result in a statement issued by his campaign organisation.

The senator, in the statement signed by Mr. Ukpai Ukairo, stated that there has not been a return on the Abia North election, stressing that the true position was that results were still being collated.

The statement reads: “It has come to our knowledge that INEC operatives in their haste to arrive at a pre-determined conclusion manipulated the electoral process to the shock of all well-meaning patriots, who believe in democracy.

“In this respect, it is tragic that INEC could conduct an election without the issuance of form EC40G, a form used to capture cancelled votes and places where there was no voting.

”In the circumstances of the above, we demand that the Resident Electoral Commissioner in  Abia State should direct the Returning Officer of the Abia North Senatorial Election to make the requisite declaration in accordance with the dictates of Rule 17E(e) of the guidelines for the conduct of elections issued by INEC by cancelling the elections completely.”

  • Kalu mourns late Ogunjobi

Former Governor of Abia, Dr Orji Kalu, has described the death of the former Secretary General of Nigeria Football Federation ( NFF ), Chief Taiwo Ogunjobi, as a huge loss to the country.

In a statement issued on Wednesday by his Special Adviser, Mr Kunle Oyewumi, and made available to the News Agency of Nigeria ( NAN ), Orji said that Ogunjobi would be remembered for serving the country diligently in the sports sector.

According to Kalu, the late footballer popularly known as “Skippo” served the nation diligently in different positions in the sports industry.

While lamenting the passage of the ex-international footballer, Kalu pointed out that late Ogunjobi left behind good legacies for the football family to uphold.

“I join other Nigerians in mourning the passing on to eternal glory of the former NFF scribe.

“He was a talented footballer, soccer administrator and above all, a man of impeccable qualities.

“The late Ogunjobi will be remembered for his laudable contributions to sports development beyond the shores of Nigeria.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the Ogunjobi family at this sorrowful period,’’ Kalu said.

Kalu also commiserated with the government and people of Osun over the loss.

Born on Aug. 17, 1953, Ogunjobi passed on at the age of 65.

The football administrator died on Monday; until his death, Ogunjobi was the Chairman of Osun State Football Association.

  • How Buhari will win presidential poll, by Kalu

All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain and former governor of Abia State Dr Orji Kalu on Tuesday gave insights into how the winner of the February 16. 2019 election will emerge.

He said majority from Northern Nigeria would determine the winner.

According to Kalu, experience has shown that whoever clinches majority of the votes from that region always emerges President.

Speaking on departure to Abuja at a private hangar at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, Kalu said with over 14.9 million votes already in his basket, it would be easier for Buhari to coast home to victory.

He affirmed with the infrastructural revolution embarked upon in the South Eastern region, the President will also shore up his electoral changes better than in 2015.

He said people of the region have come to realize that President Buhari , who was painted in different light, has shown more love for the Igbos through the many projected executed in the region.

He cited the payment of pension to Biafrian Soldiers and Police; payment of severance benefits to former workers of Nigeria Airways Limited; Nigerian Railway Corporation and massive road construction across the South East.

Kalu said Buhari will do well electorally in Anambra state with a projected 50 per cent of the votes cast; while he will pull over 35 per cent of votes cast in Enugu and 50 per cent in Ebonyi.

In Imo State, he predicted Buhari will pull 52 per cent and garner between 51 and 65 per cent in Abia State.

He cautioned the Igbo socio cultural organisation Ohaneze Ndi Igbo against turning the group into a political party because it does not have the mandate to tell Igbo people, which party or candidate to cast their votes for.

He said because Ohaneze comprises people of different political parties, it will be wrong for them to endorse Alhaji Abubakar Atiku of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as its preferred candidate.

Kalu warned international community especially the European Union, United States and United Kingdom against interference in the presidential election.

He said as global stakeholders they should advise on how to achieve peace and transparent elections and allow Nigerian voters to determine their leaders through the polls .

  • Ohanaeze goofs by endorsing Atiku, says Kalu

Former Abia governor, Chief Orji Kalu, has berated the apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, for endorsing the Presidential Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), former Vice President Abubakar Atiku.

Kalu expressed his disappointment with the group on Sunday in an interview with newsmen in his Camp Neya country home in Igbere, Bende Local Government Area of the state.

He said that the John Nwodo-led executive of the organisation betrayed the people’s trust and exposed the body as being partisan.

“Ohanaeze is a socio-cultural organisation and so should not be seen to be partisan. What the leadership did by endorsing Atiku was not in the interest of the Igbo nation.

“The endorsement also did not enjoy the support of the majority of members but may be a committee’s decision,” he said.

Kalu described the endorsement as wrong and capable of decimating the organisation into two factions, if not rescinded.

He said: “I was very surprised that Nwodo, whom I have a lot of respect for, could do such a thing because that is not the right thing to do.

“What they just did implies that we have two Ohanaezes, or we are going to have another organisation in a different name.

“I will be in consultation with Gov. Willie Obiano of Anambra and other people of goodwill to decide what we will do next, we are not going to accept it.

“These are card-carrying members of PDP, they cannot use Ohanaeze platform to endorse any candidate, it’s not acceptable to us.

“We want a level playing ground. I expected Ohaneze to be neutral, whoever wins, they should support.

“I’m not even expecting them to endorse Buhari, we want them to be neutral because neutrality is the hallmark of every independent cultural association,” Kalu said.

The former governor dismissed the fear that the endorsement would sway the voting pattern in the South-East against President Muhammadu Buhari.

He said that South-East APC had begun intensive campaign in churches and communities to showcase the president’s performance in the zone in just barely four years of his administration.

He further dispelled the speculation that the president hated Ndigbo, saying that Buhari had done for the area what PDP government could not do in their 16 years.

He cited the ongoing rehabilitation of the Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway, Enugu-Onitsha Expressway and the construction of the second Niger Bridge as some of Buhari’s major projects in the area, to buttress his point.

He said: “I don’t know why people always say that Buhari hates the Igbos because I know Buhari very well. He is a friend to Ndigbo. Am I not a friend to President Buhari?

“I know that on February 16, Abia will give him more than 85 per cent of their votes.”

Kalu, who is the APC candidate in Abia North Senatorial District, expressed great confidence that the party would have landslide victory in all the elections.

“The party has the antidote against rigging,” he said, adding that the party also had what it would take to win the polls at all levels in 2019.

“We will never allow anybody to rig us out in Abia again. We shall match them force by force and money for money,” he said.

He gave assurance that he would pursue the enactment of bills that would help to transform the nation’s economy, create jobs and ensure agricultural revolution in all the states of the federation if elected.

  • Orji Kalu and the revocation of bail: Matters arising

Hon. Justice Mohammed Idris of the Federal High (and a Court of Appeal Justice-designate, having been elevated to the higher Bench), was obviously in a hurry to dispense with the case and move on.

Section 396(7) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act(ACJA) of 2015 has given judges the leeway to conclude criminal matters even after the elevation of such a judge.

396(7): “Notwithstanding the provision  of any other law to the contrary, a judge of the High Court who has been elevated to the Court of Appeal shall have dispensation to continue to sit as a High court Judge, only for the purpose of concluding any part-heard criminal matter, pending before him at the time of his elevation and shall conclude within  reasonable time, provided  that this section shall not prevent him from assuming duty as a Justice of the Court of Appeal”.

This provision obviously was meant correct certain anomalies in criminal trials, whereby hitherto, when such elevation of judges occurred, it usually resulted in the cases being heard de novo (afresh from the beginning). This has caused lots of delays in criminal trials.

On Monday, Justice Idris had revoked the bail of a former Governor of Abia State, Chief Orji Kalu, who is standing trial of alleged N3.2 billion fraud.

Perhaps, it is necessary at this stage to give a brief background to the debacle.

This case has dragged on for 11 years. That was before the enactment of the ACJA  in 2015, which to all intents and purposes, was meant to fast track criminal justice system and eliminate interlocutory appeals that hitherto were impediments to quick administration of Justice.

Kalu is facing an amended 39- count charge, along with his former Commissioner  for Finance, Jones Udeogu and a company, Slok Nigeria Limited.

On May 11, 2018, the EFCC prosecutor, Rotimi Jacobs, SAN had closed the case of the prosecution after the conclusion of evidences by prosecution witnesses.

Counsel to the defendants, Awa Kalu, SAN, on May  28, 2018 filed a no-case submission which was subsequently argued and dismissed by the judge, asking Kalu to open his defence.

However, before the defendants could open their defence, their counsel, Goddy Uche, SAN had informed the court that the lead defence counsel, Awa Kalu, SAN, had written the court to the effect that the first defendant, Orji Kalu had a medical appointment in Germany, where he was to undergo a major surgery.

He subsequently pleaded with the court to adjourn the matter to September 10, by which time the defendant would be in a position to open his defence.

Justice Idris then adjourned the case to September 10 to enable the defendants open their defence. But that was not to be, as Kalu wasn’t back from his medical trip.

The matter was further put off till November 5  when Kalu was still recuperating at a German hospital. His  counsel, Awa Kalu, SAN informed the court that his client was still recuperating in Germany, adding that the EFCC prosecutor, Rotimi Jacobs, SAN was aware of the development.

However, Jacobs expressed surprise that Kalu was absent, wondering whether Kalu obtained the court’s permission to travel.

He accused Kalu for allegedly jumping bail.

While the judge agreed with Awa Kalu that the case was adjourned sine die on September 27 but that hearing notice was served on Kalu on November 2,  a time Kalu was in a German hospital. The judge then adjourned the matter for the last time, giving Kalu a one week grace to be in court.

This was not to be as Kalu was still in the German hospital. But the judge wasn’t impressed, leading him to revoke Kalu’s bail and adjourned the matter to January 23, 2019 to enable Kalu enough time to recuperate and be in court.

That is the crux of the matter. The judge seemed to have contradicted himself. Having adjourned the matter to January 23 to enable the first defendant enough time to recuperate, with profound respect to the honourable judge, he ought not to have revoked the bail. Rather, he should have said that in view of the medical challenges of the first defendant, that he was adjourning the matter for the last time and that if Kalu refused to show up on January 23, he would revoke the bail. That should have been a more fairer decision than revoking his bail, even when there is enough evidence that the first defendant was in a German hospital.

This is also particularly against the background of the fact that his counsel formally informed the EFCC of his planned medical trip.

This case has dragged on for 11 years and it is instructive to note that throughout this period, the first defendant had never absented himself from trial. To me, the Hon. Judge ought to have adverted his mind to this.

Perhaps, if the defendant had had a history of absenting himself in court in the course of the trial, that many have worked negatively against him but that was not the case.

As a matter of fact, after the Supreme court dismissed his interlocutory appeal on March 19, 2016, Kalu had stated that it was welcome decision that his trial was about to start, stating that it provided him an opportunity to prove his innocence.

My concern now is that as the trial is winding down, the judge may have inadvertently put a spanner in the works with this order of bail revocation because l foresee a possible application that the judge should recuse himself.

That may invariably prolong a matter that should have ended in the first quarter of next year.

It needs be noted that only the living can stand trial. A former Governor of Kogi state, Abubakar Audu who died three years ago was facing a 186 count charge of alleged corruption. The 186 count charge died along with him and the society is the loser.

A little tarry by the judge till January 23 would have been more appropriate. But revoking his bail, while at the same time urging him to take his time to get fit till January 23, to me, sounds contradictory. It’s like taking with left hand, what you have with right hand. It’s unhelpful in the circumstance. If a defendant had made himself available for trial for11 years without jumping bail, the circumstances of the revocation of the bail seem high-handed.

As the maxim goes, justice must not only be done but must be seen to have been done.

While the judge may be eager to  be done with the case and go and take his seat at the Court of Appeal, I’m afraid the judge may have unwittingly played into the hands of the defendants where a possible application of recusing himself may be in the offing. Meanwhile, we keep our fingers crossed and watch as developments unfold.

  • 2019 general elections will be violence-free – Kalu

Chief Orji Kalu, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and former governor of Abia has predicted that the 2019 general elections would be violence-free across the country.

Kalu made the prediction on Friday in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Umuahia, the Abia Capital.

He said: “There was no violence in 2015 in spite the general fear and predictions before the polls, so there will be no violence in 2019.

“The elections will be peaceful here in Abia and across the whole Federation.”

He said that the ruling-APC government of President Muhammadu Buhari would stop at nothing to ensure hitch-free election.

“The elections will not be marred by violence. APC-led government will leave no stone unturned to protect the nation democracy.’’

He said that the pressure of electioneering usually heated up the polity and described the development as natural and often precedent to general elections anywhere in the world.

According to the ex-governor, such heat being experienced should not be mistaken as a sign of imminent violence.

“Even in the U.S., the polity is presently heating up ahead of the midterm elections coming up on Nov. 6,’’ he said.

Kalu, who is a senatorial aspirant for Abia North, took exception to the recent destruction of billboards and posters belonging to political office seekers in the area.

He blamed the act on desperate politicians and their thugs, saying that people should not make politics a do-or-die affair.

“People should see politics as a game, if you win, you rejoice but if you lose you take it in the spirit of sportsmanship. It should not be a do-or-die affair.’’

On the recent defections across different party lines by some prominent politicians in the country, Kalu said that the actions were intended to satisfy personal interest and “not in the interest of the people.’’

“Those politicians that are defecting are doing so for their selfish interest because they felt that they would not get the ticket from their former parties.’’

He attributed the trend to the lack of ideology among the nation’s political class, saying that politicians should learn to play politics of ideology.

“You saw that when I left the Peoples Democratic Party I did not return rather, I joined APC because it meets my expectations and that is where all Nigerians of note are sitting.’’

Kalu said that he was determined to bring the Southeast geo-political zone into the mainstream of the nation’s politics.

“I am currently working hard day and night to ensure that APC wins the governorship and National Assembly positions in all the states in the zone.

“My ambition is to make sure that I bring the South-east to sit where other Nigerians are sitting and we must achieve it in 2019.’’

Kalu reiterated his earlier position that APC would have a landslide victory in the zone in 2019.

He said APC would score at least, 75 per cent votes in Abia and 51 per cent in the other states in the zone.

  • I’m standing by Buhari—Orji Kalu

Following the defection of some members of the All Progressives Congress to other political parties recently, former governor of Abia State, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu, has said that nothing will make him abandon the party or change his position on  supporting President Muhammadu Buhari.

It will be recalled that reports earlier in the week alleged that Kalu was planning to defect to the PDP after the Senate President Bukola Saraki and other legislators left the APC.

But  Kalu at a meeting with stakeholders and executive members of the party from wards to state levels including major stakeholders of the party in the state held at his Camp Neya in Igbere, Bende Local Government Area said that he was going nowhere but to stay in APC and ensure that Buhari is reelected come 2019.

According to him, APC under President Buhari in three years has been able to do what then PDP led government could not do within the 16 years they were in power.

The former governor who recalled how impassible the Enugu-Awka-Onitsha and Enugu-Umuahia-Aba-Port Harcourt were under the PDP and how he tried all his best to draw the attention of the PDP led government to the ugly state of the road which serves as major expressways connecting the southeast states and other parts of the country said that “the story is no longer the same under the Buhari APC led government.” He vowed that the APC in the state would appreciate  Buhari for his numerous works in the southeast which the state has benefitted from, by  ensuring  that he (Buhari) gets 75percent vote cast in the state come 2019 presidential election.

Kalu while using the opportunity to disclose that the state government is taking glory over some of the federal government instituted projects in the state assured Abians that “the party would soon come out with the list of federal government sponsored projects including the ongoing school feeding of pupils in primary schools, rehabilitation and reconstruction of roads among other federal government completed and ongoing projects across the state.”

The APC chieftain assured Abians and party members that the era of PDP rigging in Abia State was gone, adding that while they (APC) would not rig to win election in 2019, “we  won’t allow the PDP or any other party in the state to rig APC out.

”We will soon draw a list of some of the completed and ongoing projects in Aba and Umuahia and every other part of the state being executed by the federal government through the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) and other arms of government which the Abia State government is taking glory for.

”President Buhari has done more than PDP did in 16years. For the first time after 16years of PDP rulership, the Enugu-Awka-Onitsha and Enugu-Umuahia-Aba-Port Harcourt roads  are receiving attention of the federal government. The Niger Bridge is about 60percent completed. Are we talking about the federal government school feeding and the numerous works that NDDC is doing in the state which the state government is taking glory for  doing?

”We will soon list the projects that the federal government is doing in the state so that the people will be better informed and be in a better position to make proper decision in 2019. How can a government that has not been able to pay workers’ salaries and pensioners their gratuity and other entitlements be taking glory of what they didn’t do?

”The era of intimidation of the opposition or rigging in the state is gone. APC is ready to march PDP in any way and in whatever form.

  • NEYA IYERE expectant

NEYA Iyere, nee Orji Kalu, the daughter of the former Governor of Abia State, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu, and her husband, Lawrence, are expecting their first child. The couple got married at a grand wedding ceremony last December.

Neya, who is the heiress to the Orji Uzor Kalu dynasty, we gathered, is already counting days awaiting the arrival of the tiny patter of feet. To say the CEO of Jus Human Beauty Spa, Abuja, is the apple of her father’s eyes is stating the obvious. Little wonder, the former governor named his country home in the sleepy town of Igbere, Abia State, as Camp Neya.
