Former Super Eagles star, Osaze Odemwingie has sustained a calf injury in the warm-up

before Rotherham United faced off against Oxford United in the FA Cup on Saturday.

The Super Eagles star was initially named in the starting eleven but had to make way for

    Blackstock due to the injury.

Odemwingie will have to undergo further tests in order to determine the number of days he

will have to spend in the treatment room.

It was noted on allnigeriasoccer.com that the 2014 World Cup star has been offered a contract extension that will keep him at the Millers until the end of the 2016-2017 season, but nothing has been signed yet.
He has made seven appearances for Rotherham United, and has bagged an assist.

    Odemwingie undergoes successful surgery

Super Eagles striker, Osaze Odemwingie, has undergone a successful surgery on his injured knee, africanFootball.com reports.

The former Lokomotiv Moscow and Cardiff City forward disclosed this on his Twitter handle Tuesday.

“Heard we won and @ Muniesa92 scored twice! What a day and win!! More good news for us potters as MY SURGERY TODAY ALSO WENT WELL!” he tweeted.

Odemwingie injured his knee while in action for Stoke City in a 1-0 win over Manchester City on August 30.

The striker played for only 15 minutes in that game.

He is expected to miss most of the English Premier League season on account of this injury setback.

    ‘Odemwingie out for eight months’

Nigeria international Osaze Odemwingie could be out for the rest of season amid fears he has seriously damaged his cruciate knee ligament, according to a media report.

The news on Odemwingie is a crushing blow for a player that played a pivotal role in Stoke’s last season performance, africanFootball.com reports.

The Super Eagles forward collapsed with nobody around him at Manchester City on Saturday and was taken off the pitch.

Stoke boss Mark Hughes said after the 1-0 win that the injury was nothing serious.

But that is no longer the case with medical report saying he has ruptured his knee ligament.

Stoke City is now looking at the possibility of acquiring Oussama Assaidi on loan as his replacement, the Stoke Sentinel said.

Stoke tried to buy the Liverpool winger earlier this summer following his successful loan stint at Stoke last season.

His high personal demands stalled the deal, however, and it eventually fell through when Stoke took Victor Moses on loan from Chelsea instead.

But now Assaidi’s name is back on a hastily-assembled hit list on transfer deadline day.

Tottenham’s Aaron Lennon is another possibility, but his former Spurs boss Harry Redknapp reportedly wants him at Queens Park Rangers.

    • Queries no penalty call

An angry Peter Osaze Odemwingie has queried the officiating of American referee, Mark Geiger, in Monday night’s 1-2 defeat of Nigeria by France at Brazil 2014.

Odemwingie described the officiating as not only appalling but said it was against what the General Coordinator for the game between Nigeria and France, Walter Sieber of Canada came to preach to the Super Eagles in Campinas, the Nigerian team base camp.

“I recall that when the Canadian came to us he showed us a film of a defender holding down a striker in the vital area in the course of a game and he was very clear that it should be a penalty. I was then shocked that when I was held by the waist by a French defender, so much so that I could not move with the referee watching at close range, the man waived play on instead of a penalty and a possible expulsion for the player. “FIFA should not make the world believe that they use double standards at the World Cup, I am shocked that even the media is keeping quiet over the blatant officiating.

He also lambasted the cancellation of Nigeria’s opening goal and the brutish hacking of teammate Ogenyi Onazi. “It was obvious that some forces wanted France to defeat us at all cost but one day Africa will get at par with the rest of the World in football”, he lamented.

  • Moses, Osaze can wreck Bosnia

    Moses, Osaze can wreck Bosnia

The President of Zambia’s Football Association Kalusha Bwalya believes that Nigeria’s Victor Moses and Osaze Odemwingie should be on the field at the same time to run at defenders and create the magic.

This was his assessment of Nigeria’s opening game and Bwalya also singled out Nigeria’s next match with Bosnia-Herzegovina as a six pointer and a crucial moment for Africa’s World Cup.

Nigeria’s Super Eagles struggled to break down an organised Iran side in their opening FIFA World Cup match on Monday night. The game ended 0-0 and became the first draw in what has been a thrilling tournament thus far.

“I think Nigeria are a good team with a very strong squad. Now people must remember that Iran qualified well and coach Carlos Queiroz has brought good organisation, the best you will see for Iran over the years,” Bwalya tells African Football.

The 1988 African Footballer of the Year believes that Nigeria could do with a bit of creativity in their starting team though.

“I think Victor Moses and Osaze Odemwingie need to both be in the starting line-up against Iran because they create something. You need guys to run at defenders, to create things,” Bwalya says.

“I think Ahmed Musa was not at his best, so when coach (Stephen) Keshi gets it right with the formation, things will come right for Nigeria.

“Bosnia are a strong team and given that less is known about them than Argentina, this will be the big test for Nigeria. Keshi will know what to expect from Argentina, but now they need to win against Bosnia.

“You want to be going into the match with Argentina on four points. So it is a big six point match against Bosnia.

“On the positive side, Bosnia will need to throw everything at Nigeria after their loss to Argentina and this could open the game up. They don’t just defend, they do also play football and I think Bosnia will make a good game out of this.”

    • Eagles star didn’t play to instruction
    • Big Boss blames anxiety, impatience for Iran’s draw
    • Says Bosnia are beatable

Super Eagles chief coach Stephen Keshi shocked his audience in Curitiba, Brazil on Monday night when he lampooned second half substitute Osaze Odemwingie for not playing to instructions in the game against Iran which ended on a barren note.

Keshi stressed further that the players were disappointing in the Iran game just as they failed to abide by his half time suggestions that they should adopt a calmer approach to the game.

According to Keshi: ”I disagree with those suggesting that the Eagles that played against Iran had not improved since we lifted the African Cup of Nations trophy in South Africa on February 10.

”Instead, I would say that anxiety and impatience ruined us. the boys wanted to finish off the game in the first 25 minutes, which was worth it given our talent. but once this didn’t happen, frustration set in, culminating in the jittery first half showing. this was the main reason why we didn’t score any goal in the game.

Asked if he thought the goal disallowed in the first half ought to have stood, Keshi said: I wont comment on the disallowed goal. I respect the referee’s decision. My boys decided to kill off the game in the first 20 minutes. I told them from the sidelines and at half time that they needed to be calm. Why they opted for the pattern that Iran planned for us, still baffles me. But that is football for you.

”My boys played well except that they didn’t score goals. You are saying that Osaze did well when he came in. But I must tell you that Osaze didn’t play the role I asked him to do. The Iran game is gone and like Mikel said earlier, we would return to the drawing board to correct the mistakes made against Iran.”

Asked if he thought the game against Bosnia would be a piece of cake, Keshi said: ” I’m convinced that Bonsians are beatable. Or is anyone here saying that the Bosnians are not beatable? We can come on Saturday and beat them. you never can tell with football. I’m not sure we played badly against Iran. I knew the way the Iranians would play and I told my players what to do. I don’t play defensive football. I won’t play the way the Iranians did when we meet Bosnia. I must also say that the Iranians were too physical against my boys,” Keshi said.

  • YOBO, OSAZE END IN DRAW

    YOBO, OSAZE END IN DRAW

RETURNING Nigerian duo of Joseph Yobo and Osaze Odemwingie ended yesterday’s clash at Carrow Road in a 1-1 draw after Jonathan Walters scored a penalty before being sent off for Potters’.

Osaze’s Stoke looked lively in the early stages, with both Peter Crouch and Walters forcing John Ruddy to make saves to keep the scores level.

Norwich improved as the first half progressed and the dangerous Wes Hoolahan managed to create an opportunity with a chipped pass to Robert Snodgrass, who was denied from 10 yards by Asmir Begovic.

Record signing Ricky van Wolfswinkel had a great chance to break the deadlock just before the break but he failed to hit the target with a glancing header on the stroke of half time.

A frustrated Carrow Road was left delighted in the 56th minute as Norwich took the lead when Bradley Johnson lost his marker to head home a free kick from Snodgrass.

Yobo’s Norwich grew in confidence after opening the scoring but their progress was halted in the 73rd minute when John Guidetti won a penalty after being bundled over by Sebastien Bassong.

Walters stepped up from 12 yards and he found the bottom corner to level the scores as the game entered its closing stages.

Stoke were forced into a difficult position late on when Walters turned from hero to zero as he was shown a red card for a poor tackle on Alexander Tettey but the Potters managed to hold on to secure a point.

Interestingly, While Yobo played all 90 minutes, Osaze lasted for 63 minutes before he was replaced by John Guidetti in the pustulating encounter.

Osaze celebrates: Man Utd win great start

Osaze Odemwingie has said Saturday’s win over Manchester United was a perfect way to mark his home debut for Stoke City.

The 32-year-old made his debut against Sunderland in midweek and marked his first home appearance by helping Stoke to a first Premier League win over United following a 2-1 success at the Britannia Stadium.

“It is the first time I have heard of Stoke City beating Manchester United so it makes this victory even more special and we just need to build on this,” a delighted Osaze celebrated.

“We know that in the table everyone is so close to each other. Every point can take you up or send you down so what makes this victory very special is that maybe people didn’t expect us to win. It felt great, I’ve played here a couple of times before but today’s support was fantastic. I felt welcome from the first day I came here and to start with a victory here on my home debut feels really good.

“The manager’s speech (before the game) was very inspiring. If we keep going like this we are going to achieve everything we want this season.”

Mark Hughes deployed Odemwingie in an unfamiliar wide role, but the forward said his team-mates had made the transition easier for him.

“I’m happy to play anywhere up front in the line,” he said.

“There were a lot of overloads from the left side today(Saturday) and I had to do a little bit more of a defensive job which is possibly not something that I am best at. But I had to do it for the team and I am grateful to my team-mates for encouraging me to do that. They were always there for me and I hope things will continue in the same way.”
