Edo North APC leaders endorse Oshiomhole for second term

In a remarkable show of political unity and strategic resolve, the All Progressives Congress (APC) leadership in Edo North Senatorial District has thrown its full weight behind Senator Adams Oshiomhole for a second term in the Senate.

The unanimous endorsement came during a high-level caucus meeting held in Iyamho, Oshiomhole’s hometown, shortly after a critical security summit with Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo.

The dual-purpose gathering underscored both the security priorities of the region and the party’s political direction ahead of the 2027 general election.

According to a statement issued yesterday by the Media Assistant to the Minister of Regional Development, Osigwe Omo-Ikirodah, the endorsement closed the door to internal contention over Edo North Senate ticket within the APC.

The meeting brought together prominent political heavyweights and stakeholders from across Edo North, including the Minister of Regional Development, Abubakar Momoh; former Minister of Budget and National Planning, Clement Agba; APC elder, Chief Francis Alimikhena; South-South political strategist, Dr. Blessing Agbomhere; federal lawmaker, Dekeri Anamero; grassroots mobiliser, Chief Abu Millionaire; political figure, Chief Ohimai and development technocrat, Ernest Afolabi Umakhihe, among others.

Okpebholo, Oshiomhole, Onyema to receive awards at 2025 Etsako Club 81 cultural celebration

Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, alongside former Governor and Senator representing Edo North, Adams Oshiomhole, Minister of Regional Development, Engr. Abubakar Momoh, and Air Peace Chairman, Dr. Allen Onyema, are set to be honored at the 2025 Etsako Club 81 Afenmai Cultural Day Celebration in Lagos.

According to the event’s organizers, the celebration aims to revive the cultural heritage of the Etsako people in Edo North, highlighting their economic potential and attracting global tourism.

Governor Okpebholo will serve as the Special Guest of Honour, while renowned constitutional lawyer, Professor Mike Ozekhome, will chair the event. Oshiomhole and Onyema will be recognized as Distinguished Guests of Honour, with traditional rulers from Afenmai land presiding as Royal Fathers of the day.

President of Etsako Club 81 Worldwide, Sir Greg Otsu, told journalists in Lagos that the event, scheduled for Sunday, February 16, at the Naval Dockyard, Victoria Island, will celebrate outstanding Afenmai sons and daughters as well as friends of the community who have excelled in their respective fields.

Otsu said the theme ‘Reviving Our Afenmai Culture: A Call to Action’ reflects the needs not only for the Etsako people of Nigeria to look inward on how to turn their cultural heritage into money spinning ventures but also a message to other tribes in Nigeria.

He said: “Our cultures are unique to us as different people from various backgrounds and history. We have for long either neglected these cultural values and potentials or allowed others from outside to negatively influence ours. We have seen how people of other tribes are turning their cultural heritage around and attracting tourists from across the globe, the Afenmai people have a lot of those to offer as well hence the need for this renaissance we are embarking upon.”

He urged the people of the senatorial region to inculcate the values and culture of the afenmai land in their children wherever they find themselves around the world.

“Our people deserve our support at this critical time in the history of our country and for us whom God has blessed, we cannot afford to miss this clarion call. I urge my people wherever they are across the world to remember their roots and support its development”, he told journalists.

Retired generals behind illegal mining, says Oshiomhole

    • Senate recommends N539b capital budget for Ministry of Solid Minerals

The Senate, on Friday, accused some unnamed retired military generals as being behind the numerous illegal mining activities taking place across the country.

This is even as it recommended the sum of N539billion as the capital expenditure allocation for the Ministry of Solid Minerals in the 2025 Appropriation Bill.

The Chairman of the Senate Committee on Interior, Senator Adams Oshiomhole (APC – Edo North), made the allegation when the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Solid Minerals Development, Senator Ekong Sampson, submitted his 2025 budget report to the Senate Committee on Appropriation.

Oshiomhole said that the country’s efforts at diversifying its economy would remain a mirage if President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration refuses to address the growing incidence of illegal mining in the country.

On his part, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Solid Minerals Development, Sampson, before submitting his report, said his committee had recommended N539billion as the capital budget for the solid minerals development’s ministry in the 2025 Appropriation Bill.

Sampson noted that the executive had proposed N9billion as the capital vote for the ministry for the 2025 fiscal year, but that his committee believed that the amount was grossly inadequate to tap the enormous potential in the sector.

He said even when the ministry had an insignificant allocation last year; it raked in a total of N37billion as revenue.

Oshiomhole, who is a member of the Appropriation Committee, said no amount of funds appropriated to the Solid Minerals sub-sector would not achieve any meaningful results if the issue of illegal miners were not effectively tackled.

He suggested that the Federal Government should start dealing with illegal miners like the way it was currently attacking those involved in illegal oil bunkering in the Niger Delta region.

He said the country would have increased its current 0.05% GDP to about 50%  GDP if the government had stopped the activities of the illegal miners.

Oshiomhole said, “Whereas the Federal Government is ruthless with people who are doing illegal oil bunkering by deploying the Joint Military Task Force to deal with themthe  when it comes to illegal mining of solid minerals, the Federal Government changes. It’s like using different standards and I am very angry about that.

“If we have to fight this menace, we need to deploy the Army even to kill anyone who is involved in illegal pumping of oil. We should also deploy JTFs, comprising the Army, Police, and Air force, against them.

“The ongoing illegal mining across the country is being carried out by retired generals and we know them.

“Yes, we know them. Nobody in Africa doesn’t know them. I wrote a letter to former President Muhammadu Buhari on the matter when he was in office.

“This is because a team that I sent to go and conduct the primary somewhere, reported back to me the challenge of conducting primary elections in Zamfara because of the illegal miners.

“The team told me that those illegal miners procure arms exactly the same way the military is doing in South Sudan.

“They give them arms. They use choppers to come and cart away the gold and they take them out of this country and make billions of U.S. dollars.

“Unfortunately, the Federal Government is not doing what it should be doing. I took this letter to the former president when I was the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress and I said; call the general to give you more briefing.

“In fact, what is happening or what is supposed to really happen in that part of the country was exactly what the general told me was going to happen.

“These guys have been weaponised by the illegal big men who deployed a secure territory. The weaponry was made to protect the Chinese and other foreigners and that’s why they actually are going to carry out the mining.

“So, the retired military officers, army officers, are involved in it.

“The day we can’t tell the truth, this country cannot flourish. That is what is going on with the mining sub-sector. It is not that we don’t know where it is. We have a whole survey of where we can find them across the length and breadth of Nigeria.

“Even as we are talking now, there are still those illegal miners and those guys are getting richer when they get poorer.

“Who can afford to buy the chopper, land in an illegal mining site, cart away gold, and immediately, are on the way to the airport, to take them out of the country? This is happening.

“My position is that we shouldn’t be lamenting. We should fix the problem. We should tell the executive, you must deploy exactly the same force that you deployed against illegal oil bunkering in the Niger Delta.

“That same force should be deployed to deal with criminals who have money. When I say criminals, it can be a retired general, it can be a retired permanent secretary, it can be a retired trade unionist or a retired labour leader.”

Xmas: Oshiomhole distributes 11,000 bags of rice to constituents

Sen. Adams Oshiomhole (APC-Edo-North) has distributed 11,000 bags of rice to people in his senatorial district to celebrate Christmas.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the rice comprising 10kg, 25kg and 50kg are distributed to the six local government areas of Edo-North Senatorial District.

Speaking during the distribution to various local governments on Wednesday, Oshiomhole said the donation is part of palliative measures to the people of the district.

He admonished Christians and Nigerians to sue for peace and love during the celebration.

“This rice is not for party members alone, mechanic, tailors, vigilante group should also benefit from the kind gesture.

“I will never take your support for granted and I assure you I will continue to provide leadership for a better Afemai land.”

The former governor who acknowledged that things were tough pleaded with Nigerians to exercise patience with the present administration as things would get better.

“I am aware that things are tough and things are tougher at the grassroot. Continue to have faith in the APC led-Federal Government and Nigeria we will be great again.

He, however, wished everyone a merry Christmas and a happy New year in advance.

My son qualified to serve as Edo commissioner – Oshiomhole

Former governor of Edo State and current senator for Edo North, Adams Oshiomhole, has expressed confidence that his son Cyril, is qualified to serve as the state’s commissioner for health.

Oshiomhole made the statement during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Wednesday.

He said: “He doesn’t work under me; maybe Governor Monday is grooming him. When I was in Edo, I stopped him when he wanted to go for the House of Reps. I said no and supported another guy. The second time he wanted to try, I said no. This time the governor decided to pick him. He is qualified.

“I did express my concerns when I heard. I called him and expressed my concerns. I expressed those concerns to the governor that people might say this and that.

“Those were the reasons why I stopped him from contesting elections when I was in office but then I have to accept that in the world that we live in, you can only do so much to control your son but not when he is already of adult age.

“But the point must be made: I invested in my children’s education. I didn’t want them to go through what I went through. So, Dr Cyril is not just a medical doctor from ABU (Ahmadu Bello University), he went to do post-graduate in two universities in the US including Harvard and another university in Louisiana. He does something about public health.

“So, he is not having it because he is Oshiomhole; I will say he is having in spite of being Oshiomhole.”

Cyril, a medical doctor, was nominated for the position of commissioner for health by Governor Monday Okpebholo, a close ally of Oshiomhole.

He was officially sworn in on November 19 at the Government House in Benin City.

  • Oshiomhole opposed son’s appointment as commissioner, says Edo deputy governor

Oshiomhole opposed son’s appointment as commissioner, says Edo deputy governor

Edo State Deputy Governor, Dennis Idahosa, has clarified the rationale behind the appointment of Dr Cyril Oshiomhole, son of former state governor and current senator, Adams Oshiomhole, as the commissioner for Health.

The appointment sparked conversations regarding potential political influence, but Idahosa said competence, not familial ties, was the decisive factor.

In an exclusive interview with Channels TV yesterday, Idahosa addressed concerns that the inclusion of Senator Oshiomhole’s son in the executive council (exco) could be perceived as a case of political nepotism or “state capture”, a term popularised by former President Olusegun Obasanjo.

“This position has nothing to do with Adams (Oshiomhole),” Idahosa asserted.

“In fact, Adams didn’t want it. He opposed it. But the governor, because of the vision he wants for the people of Edo, has made up his mind to have Dr Cyril Adams Oshiomhole to be in our exco, not because of his father.

“So, for us, we have made up our minds, we are going to look at the competence, not because this person is a son of who, or any other person.’’

Cyril Oshiomhole, a seasoned medical doctor, with education and professional experience in Nigeria and the United States, was chosen for his expertise, according to Idahosa.

He said: “This guy, Dr Cyril, has the competence and he has worked in health sectors before,” the deputy governor explained.

“The governor found him worthy to be one of the exco members in Edo. So, I don’t see anything wrong with that. Even if someone else is the governor of Edo, I believe if he finds Dr. Cyril competent, he should be able to bring him on board as the commissioner for Health in Edo State.’’

Idahosa dismissed claims that the appointment was influenced by Senator Oshiomhole’s political stature.

“The father did not have any role or influence in this decision,” Idahosa stressed.

“He has everything it takes to be in the exco. So, because he’s a son of someone doesn’t forbid him from occupying the seat he has the competence to occupy.”

Responding to the remarks made by former President Obasanjo about politicians engaging in state capture, Idahosa said Edo State’s situation was distinct.

“If we talk about former President Obasanjo, whatever he says, that is not the case here in Edo. Whatever he’s going to do, that’s fine. But for us, our peculiarities are different,” he said.

Edo election: Oshiomhole dismisses allegation of vote-buying against APC

Former Governor of Edo, Adams Oshiomole on Saturday dismissed  allegation against the All Progressives Congress (APC) over alleged vote buying in the ongoing governorship election in the state.

Oshiomhole stated this  while speaking with newsmen shortly after casting his vote at Iyamho, Ward 10 Unit 01 in Estako West Local Government Area of Edo.

“It is laughable when I hear this kind of allegation. You all have been monitoring the process, have you seen where they are sharing money?

“People turned out in large number to vote for us because they want good government.

“During our campaign people came out to see me not because I wanted to give them something, but because of what I have done for them while I was in the office as the governor,” he said.

Edo Decides: Oshiomhole votes, says achievements attract electorates

A former Edo Governor, Senator Adams Oshiomhole, has voted at his Ward 10 Unit 01 Estako West Local Government Area.

Senator Oshiomhole voted after waiting in the queue for over one hour.

His nonagenarian mother, Aisha Oshiomhole, voted at the same polling unit.

Speaking to journalists after he voted, the former Edo Governor said his projects endeared the people to him.

He denied the All Progressives Congress (APC) stock-pilled money to buy votes adding that he has not received any report of violence from anywhere across the state.

“It is laughable when I heard this kind of allegation. Have you seen anywhere where they are sharing money? People turned out in large numbers to vote for us because they want good government. “All structures that I have put in place 12, 13 years ago are still there but the ones put up by the present administration, in one year , they are washed off. So our people have seen the difference. Some people do tell me that since I left the government, they haven’t seen the real presence of government in their communities.

“The voters know what they want. I am happy the media are here showing live pictures from a rural village like mine. Other people will watch it and see the election is peaceful. Rural people deserve a greater share of the federal budget than state budget. You can see that the people are peaceful.”

  • Oshiomhole, Mrs Obaseki and Edo poll

Oshiomhole, Mrs Obaseki and Edo poll

Edo will be voting a new governor next Saturday, September 21, 2024. It will be tough, fierce and bad-tempered. While on one side the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) state chairman, Odion Olaye, was threatening that the state would burn if the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate was not declared winner, former governor Adams Oshiomhole and first lady Betsy Obaseki were on the other side busy crossing swords on campaign rostrums with ill-natured language about marriage and family. It is now indisputably clear that the Labour Congress harbours many bad-tempered officials at the state and national levels, men and women who believe Nigeria owes them a living, and that without them and their personal wishes, the country should be erased. The subject of interest today, however, is the churlish exchange between Senator Oshiomhole and Mrs Obaseki, an exchange that has drawn much flak and caused disquiet in many quarters, perhaps in excess of the real significance of the words bandied by the two feisty Edolites.

Mrs Obaseki drew the first blood when she hit hard at the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Monday Okpebholo, whom he derided for not being able to keep a wife. It was a personal shot at the candidate’s family life that in the estimation of many people went beyond politics. According to Mrs Obaseki: “Let us vote for the best candidate in this coming election; and I want to introduce the wife (of the PDP candidate). Incidentally, among all the candidates, only one has a wife, and it’s our own party’s candidate, Asue Ighodalo. Only he has a wife…Edo women know that only one candidate has a wife. Better things come to women when there’s a woman in the Government House…” It was a merciless barb shot at both the APC and Labour Party (LP) candidates. More, there is absolutely no correlation between having a wife at Government House and good things happening to women. But Mrs Obaseki dived into that terrain anyway and hoped to both score a point and get away with her indecorousness.

The LP candidate, Olumide Akpata, simply ignored the first lady’s fulminations, or perhaps was not even aware until much later that anyone impugned the candidates’ marital rectitude. Sen. Oshiomhole was, however, not one to suffer fools gladly. On learning about Mrs Obaseki’s family jibe, he thundered: “I was shocked yesterday to see Mrs Obaseki, the first lady, saying our candidate has no wife. I’m sorry she had to say that because here is a woman who has no child. Between her and Obaseki, they are childless. They are not even ready to adopt. I don’t blame anybody who doesn’t have a child, but people who have love for children go to a motherless home and adopt. They have not adopted. They are both in their sixties. Our candidate not only has children; he has invested in the education of those children. The first one that spoke is a lawyer, the second one is a medical doctor, and they addressed the crowd in Edo South, Edo Central, and Edo North; and their mother was there.” It was a big punch aimed at Mrs Obaseki’s solar plexus. It was vintage Oshiomhole.

Cut to the quick, the now subdued first lady blurted out defensively, aiming to curry the women vote: “My words of comfort to you, like myself, who have conceived and experienced miscarriages, painful stillbirths and evacuations of babies who died in our wombs and, as a result, have no children to show for the pain we have endured, is that you are not barren. I dare to call you fruitful. You and I are potential and proud mothers of children that will come in God’s time. Enjoy the life God has given you. Take your mind off your challenge, and before you know it, children will start coming. Being fruitful is not limited to childbearing. It is about impacting lives and creating positive change in society…” Mrs Obaseki completely forgot that she started the muckraking. Few Nigerians know or care about who has a wife or doesn’t, or who has children or don’t. It was, therefore, pointless making both issues campaign matters. One had children but no wife at home, another had husband but no children. Who cares? What have those things got to do with the qualification or competence of the candidates, as expansively as Mrs Obaseki might want to insinuate them into the race?

Sen. Oshiomhole sometimes talks nineteen to the dozen, and his political career is dogged by many verbal indiscretions; but no one doubts his charisma and elocution, despite the heavy accent, nor his political sagacity which is sometimes vitiated by his characteristic impetuousness. Mrs Obaseki, on the other hand, also has a strong personality that is enervated by her obtrusiveness, a previously hidden nature exposed by the Edo governorship campaigns. She has a habit of making unguarded statements, is willing and even eager to deploy religious sentiments with Machiavellian conviction, and has repeatedly demonstrated just how perfectly she matches her husband, Governor Godwin Obaseki’s capacity for realpolitik. The irony in all this is how alarmingly Sen. Oshiomhole and the Obasekis are overshadowing the candidates in the September 21 poll.

Though in his campaigns Candidate Asue Ighodalo exhibits tendency for dictatorship, perhaps more viciously tyrannical than Mr Obaseki, and Candidate Okpebholo displays the instincts of a steady hand, neither their flaws nor their strengths appear to matter as much in the campaigns as the domineering rhetoric and antics of party bigwigs whose names are not even on the ballot.

Obaseki reveals cause of rift with Oshiomhole

Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, yesterday disclosed that the rift between him and  his benefactor, Senator Adams Oshiomhole, was his (Obaseki’s) declaration of state burial for the late chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Tony Anenih, who died during his (Obaseki’s) first term as governor, on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Obaseki made the disclosure at PDP’s campaign rally at Opujie Primary School, Uromi, in Esan Northeast Local Government Area of Edo, where Anenih hailed from.

He called on Edo state residents to vote for the governorship candidate of the PDP for the September 21 election, Dr. Asue Ighodalo.

Edo governor said: “When Chief Anenih died, I was not in PDP, but I declared a state burial for him, because of his contributions to our dear state and Nigeria. This was one of the things that created issues between me and Oshiomhole, who never wanted it. He considered it an unforgivable sin, which he could not overlook. But I had to do what was good. We are all one. Edo State is one.

“That is why I am here. For Edo to be one and united, I have to support Esan man for governor. And not just an Esan man, but a capable, competent, and intellectually-sound person, with a good track record, in the person of Asue Ighodalo.”

Obaseki also stated that the need to move Edo forward required a candidate like Ighodalo, a lawyer.

The standard bearer of PDP in Edo, while also speaking, gave an assurance to complete all ongoing projects in Esanland.

He said: “I will complete all ongoing projects, and create more. We will complete all ongoing projects in Esan Northeast and across all Esanland. Be it water, roads, hospitals, schools or anything, we will complete them and create new ones.

“Edo will be self-sufficient under my administration and become a state other states will come to. With us, Edo will not suffer poverty

“Let us support the good work to continue. Obaseki has done well and we will build on the foundation.”

The Esan Northeast local government council Chairman, Dr. Inedegbor Kelly, earlier in his welcome address, hailed Edo governor for promising Esan people the governorship and fulfilling it with credible and competent candidates in the persons of Asue Ighodalo and his running mate, Osarodion Ogie, both lawyers.

A former Esan Northeast local government council Chairman, John Yakubu, claimed that PDP would produce more than 75 percent of the votes in the area.
