  • Oshoala seeks better protection for Nigerian girl-child

Oshoala seeks better protection for Nigerian girl-child

Super Falcons striker, Asisat Oshoala, has called on the Federal Government to, as a matter of urgency, prioritise investment in protecting the Nigerian girl child.

In a statement, she said her journey to stardom has been a testament to hard work, resilience and a bit of good fortune, add not every girl is that lucky.

In a UNICEF’s report,  she said that six out of every ten children in Nigeria experience some forms of violence and within that, one in four girls has been a victim of sexual violence.

“For us in sports, the statistics are even more alarming, she said as a UNESCO report found that 21% of female athletes have endured some form of sexual abuse as children in sport,” she said

“When I lace up my boots, I carry more than just the weight of my team on my shoulders; I carry the dreams of every little girl who sees a part of herself in me. My journey has been a testament to hard work, resilience, and a bit of good fortune, especially in having the right people guide me.

“But I know, with all my heart, that not every girl is as lucky. The path to becoming a professional athlete, or simply a confident young woman, is full of potential pitfalls—and too often, the very places meant to nurture talent become sites of pain.

“This is why, for me, safeguarding is not just a policy; it’s a sacred promise. It’s the assurance that a girl stepping onto a football pitch or into a classroom feels secure, seen, and protected. It is the belief that her dreams are too precious to be broken by fear,” she stressed.

“At the Asisat Oshoala Academy, thanks to our incredible partners, Nike and Women Win, we have made safeguarding a foundational pillar of our work. Our policy isn’t just a document; it’s a living system of protection, making us one of Nigeria’s foremost, if not the first, female football academies to prioritize this with such a robust approach. We believe our girls’ talent can only truly flourish when their safety is non-negotiable.”

She further  urged the Federal Government to create legislation that makes safeguarding a constitutional requirement for organizations, especially those responsible for shaping children’s (including girls) future, rather than a luxury, embed safeguarding policies into institutions, with clear, actionable procedures for prevention, reporting, and response, invest in training for coaches, teachers, and staff to recognize, prevent, and address abuse in all its forms.

She also called on the economic managers to create confidential, survivor-centred reporting mechanisms that build trust and ensure every voice is heard without fear of reprisal.

“Let’s ensure that every young girl, just like the ones at my academy, knows that the playing field is not just a place for her dreams, but a place where she is fully protected.

“Every girl deserves the right to a safe pitch, a safe classroom, and a safe path to her dreams. Safeguarding is not charity; it is justice. It is the promise we make to the next generation that their potential will not be dimmed by fear or harm. Let us keep that promise,” she added.

Asisat Oshoala has said it is a great start in Saudi Arabia after she scored on her league debut for Al Hilal.

Olympics: Super Falcon’s Oshoala in for crucial tie against Spain

As Nigeria’s Super Falcons file out against world champions Spain Sunday in a Paris Olympics Group C matchday two clash, Asisat Oshoala may be given the nod to start ahead of  Chiwendu Ihezuo.

Spain, who are also the reigning UEFA Women’s Nations League queens, will be the favourite to power to victory in their first-ever clash with Nigeria.

While the Spaniards, making their maiden appearance at the Olympics, carved out a fine 2-1 win over Japan on Thursday, Nigeria stumbled to a tough 1-0 defeat to Brazil.

Mexico-based Ihezuo got Coach Randy Waldrum’s nod to start as the centre forward on matchday one.

However, after an underwhelming performance, she will probably make room for Oshoala, who surprisingly did not make it off the bench at any point last time out.

A former Barcelona star, Oshoala has the confidence, quality, and star name to trouble Spain’s defence and provide that efficiency the Falcons lacked against the Brazilians.

The Super Falcons will be desperate to earn a positive result against La Roja as another loss could all but confirm their elimination from the Olympics.

  • Oshoala, Nkwocha listed among Africa’s 25 best athletes

Oshoala, Nkwocha listed among Africa’s 25 best athletes

Super Falcons attacker, Asisat Oshoala, and former Nigeria international, Perpetual Nkwocha, have been included in Africa’s 25 Best Athletes of the 21st Century list.

The list of Africa’s 25 Best Athletes of the 21st Century was compiled by ESPN.

Apart from Oshoala and Nkwocha, other Nigerians who made the list include Mixed Martial Art (MMA) stars Israel Adesanya, Kamaru Usman and American Football star Osi Umenyiora.

Samuel Eto’o, Yaya Toure, Didier Drogba, Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane made the cut while athletics greats such as Kenenisa Bekele (Ethiopia), Caster Semenya (South Africa), Eliud Kipchoge (Kenya), Tirunesh Dibaba (Ethiopia) among others were listed.

Commenting on Oshoala, ESPN wrote: “Oshoala, who currently plays for Bay FC in the NWSL, has taken African women’s football to new heights. The Nigeria striker has been the African women’s Player of the Year a record six times, thanks in large part to her stellar five seasons with Barcelona.

“Her 92 league goals for Barça came at a rate of roughly one every 65 minutes. There, she won the Spanish Primera Division four times, and the UEFA Women’s Champions League thrice. For Nigeria, she’s been part of the Super Falcons side that won the African title three times, and is set to represent the Super Falcons again at the Paris Olympics.“

In its remarks on Adesanya: “Born in Lagos, although he moved to New Zealand aged 10 after a brief stint living in Ghana, Adesanya dominated the middleweight division of the UFC from 2019-2022, finally losing to Alex Pereira in November 2022 before beating him in a rematch five months later.

“Adesanya lost his belt again to Sean Strickland later that year, but has a chance to win it back against South Africa’s Dricus du Plessis at UFC 305 on August 17 in Perth.

Adesanya will be 35 years old by the time that fight happens but whether or not he dethrones du Plessis (30), he will go down in history as one of the sport’s greatest ever, fulfilling ESPN’s prophecy of him as the “next big thing.”

The global sport media outfit described Nkwocha as prolific in front of goal.

“A prolific goalscoring midfielder who conquered Africa five times with a dominant Nigeria side, former Super Falcons captain Nkwocha has made a name for herself in Sweden both as a player for Sunnanå SK and later as a coach for Clemensnäs IF.

“Nkwocha combined dazzling dribbling skills with ruthless efficiency in front of goal to etch her name into the history books as one of the greatest African women’s footballers ever.“

Writing on Usman’s exploits in MMA, ESPN stated: “Born in Auchi in Edo State, Nigeria, Usman’s run as UFC welterweight champion coincided almost precisely with Adesanya’s as middleweight king.

Both held their belts from 2019-2022, with five successful title defense. In 2021, Usman was ESPN’s Male Fighter of the Year after wins over Gilbert Burns by TKO, Jorge Masvidal by KO (punch) and Colby Covington by unanimous decision.“

Concerning Umenyiora: “Born in London to Nigerian parents, New York Giants legend Umenyiora spent much of his childhood in Nigeria and continues his post-NFL in Lagos as a talent developer.
