    Oshoala’s Barca thrash Real Madrid for 12th straight Clasico win

    Barcelona women extended their winning streak over Real Madrid to 12 victories when they dispatched their rivals in a 5-0 thrashing at the Olympic Stadium yesterday.

    Barcelona have never lost to Real in a ‘Clasico’ and the victory stretched their lead at the top of the league standings to six points.

    Barca were missing the injured Alexia Putellas but it made no difference as they won their ninth consecutive game this season to stay perfect in the league while Real are second with two defeats.

    Ballon d’Or winning midfielder and women’s World Cup hero Aitana Bonmati opened the scoring for Barcelona in the 17th  minute while Caroline Graham Hansen and Mariona Caldentey added a goal each as the home side went 3-0 up before the break.

    Real managed to stem the flow of goals after the break for the next 45 minutes, but Barca hit back with two stoppage-time goals from Claudia Pina and Vicky Lopez, who at 17 became the youngest goal scorer in the Clasico.

    The victory was also Barca’s 67th  straight home win in the league, a stunning run that stretches back to February 2019.

    The Confederation of African Football (CAF) and Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) have congratulated Super Eagles’ top striker Victor Osimhen and Super Falcons’ forward Asisat Oshoala on their nominations for this year’s Ballon d’Or honours.

    Osimhen, who scored 26 goals in the Italian Serie A last season to steer Napoli FC to their first Italian league title in 33 years, also scored five goals in the UEFA Champions League in which Napoli made it to the semi-finals.

    He is also the leading scorer in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign with seven goals.

    “We are indeed very proud of the nominations of our players Victor Osimhen and Asisat Oshoala for the Ballon d’Or. It is the first time that players from the same country are nominated for both male and female categories, and this makes us proud. It also underscores the stellar careers that both players have at the moment, and we pray that God will continue to take them from glory to glory.

    “These nominations will also, no doubt, encourage other Nigerian players everywhere to be pivotal for their Clubs and also for the National Team anytime they are on the international road,” NFF General Secretary, Mohammed Sanusi, said.

    CAF have congratulated Osimhen following his nomination for the 2023 Ballon d’Or award.

    CAF congratulated Osimhen as well as Andrey Onana, Yassine Bounou, Mohammed Salah. “Africa has 4 nominees between the best players in the world in 2023,” the Tweet reads.

  • CAF Awards: Ordega, Kgatlana challenge Oshoala for 2018 women’s best player

    Super Falcons’ forward, Francisca Ordega and South African Chrestinah Thembi Kgatlana are the two front-runners to challenge reigning queen, Asisat Oshoala from clinching her 4th crown after CAF announced them for the African Women’s Player of the Year, AOIFootball.com reports.

    The three made the cut after a performance-filled year which saw them make headlines at both club and national levels, with Ordega and Oshoala helping Nigeria retain the African Women Cup of Nations in Ghana last year.

    Oshoala, winner for the past two years and with three titles overall (2014, 2016, 2017) has her sight on a fourth title to equal the feat of compatriot Perpetua Nkwocha who won it 2004, 2005, 2010 and 2011.

    The 24-year-old helped Nigeria to successively defend her title during the Total Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (AWCON) in Ghana last December and was also instrumental for her club side as they claimed their second successive league title.

    Ordega on her part earned herself cult status following her exploits at the AWCON and in the USA, where she plies her trade with Washington Spirits.

    The 25-year old wowed fans with her pacey runs from the wings as Nigeria cruised to the title. South African forward Kgatlana, 22, was the star of the last AWCON, scooping the Most Valuable Player and Top scorer accolades as Banyana Banyana reached the final.

    This is her second nomination at this level as she hopes to become the second South African after Noko Matlou won it in 2008.

  • CAF AWARDS: Iwobi, Oshoala, Ndidi lead Nigeria’s charge

    Super Eagles’ forward, Alex Iwobi is Nigeria’s only hope of winning the 2018 African Footballer of the Year Award as he made it to the final 10 nominees for the award after the duo of Odion Ighalo and Ahmed Musa were dropped from the initial 34 earlier released by CAF.

    Iwobi will have to contend with reigning champion Mohammed Salah, Gunners teammate Aubemeyang and of course, Senegal’s Saido Mane who are all favourites for the award.

    In the young player category, Super Eagles’ and Leicester City midfielder, Wilfred Ndidi remains on course to claim his first CAF award after the Nigerian made the final three nominations alongside Morocco’s Achraf Hakimi and Franck Kessie of Ivory Coast.

    It was, however, all good for Nigeria in the women’s category with three-time African Footballer of the Year, Asisiat Oshoala making the cut with Francisca Ordega and defender Onome Ebi. Desire Oparanozie was dropped from the initial list.

    2018 AWCON MVP and highest goal score Christina Thembi Kgatlana will definitely be the favourite to dislodge Oshoala after the South African forward impressed at the recently concluded championship in Ghana.

    Similarly, Nigeria female national team, the Super Falcons have also been shortlisted for the team of the year, while head coach Thomas Dennerby also makes the cut for the coach of the year award.

    The shortlisted nominees were decided by votes from the members of the CAF Technical & Development Committee.

    The final phase will involve votes from CAF media experts, legends, coaches of the quarter-finalists of the CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup, and coaches and captains of the 54 member associations.

    The Awards Gala will be held on January 8, 2019 in Dakar, Senegal.

    Super Eagles trio Ahmed Musa, Alex Iwobi and Odion Ighalo have been named among the list of 34 players in the running for the CAF 2018 African player of the year award.

    Other big-name nominees announced by the Confederation of African Football on Friday include Egypt international Mohamed Salah and Liverpool’s team-mate Sadio Mane of Senegal.

    Also on the list are Mehdi Benatia of Morocco, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang of Gabon and Riyad Mahrez of Algeria.

    The list will be cut to three finalists and the winner will be announced on January 8 in Dakar, Senegal.

    Nigerian midfielder Wilfred Ndidi is also among the nominees for the 2018 CAF Youth Player of the Year award, while reigning African Player of the year, Asisat Oshoala will compete again for the crown against with her international teammates Desire Oparanozie, Francisca Ordega and Onome Ebi.

    Super Falcons Coach, Thomas Dennerby is among the five nominees for the Women’s Coach of the Year, while Super Eagles manager, Gernot Rohr is on the list of Men’s Coach of the Year award.

    The winners for the African Player of the Year and Women’s Player of the Year will be decided by CAF Technical & Development Committee, media experts, legends, coaches of the quarter-finalists of the Caf Champions League and Caf Confederation Cup, Coaches plus captains of the national teams of the 54 member associations.

    For other categories namely Youth Player of the Year, Men’s Coach of the Year, Women’s Coach of the Year, Men’s National Team of the Year and Women’s National Team of the Year, they will be elected by Caf  Technical & Development Committee, media experts, legends, coaches of the quarter-finalists of the Caf Champions League and Caf Confederation Cup.

    Glo CAF Awards: Arsenal hail Iwobi, Oshoala

    English Premier League side Arsenal have congratulated their talented Nigerian duo Alex Iwobi and Asisat Oshoala for winning CAF awards during the annual ceremony on Thursday night.

    Iwobi scooped the Youth Player of the Year award and Oshoala went home with the Women’s Player of the Year award, which she first won in 2014.

    “@CAF_Online Youth Player of the Year Congratulations, @alexiwobi #BIG17, ” Arsenal tweeted.

    Arsenal Ladies also commended Oshoala, tweeting : “Big congratulations to @AsisatOshoala! ???????? ”.

    While this is the first time Iwobi has been recognized by CAF, the other Nigerian winners Iheanacho and Oshoala previously won individual awards, before adding to their collection.

    African girls deserve more from football federations -Oshoala

    Super Falcons and Arsenal Club’s forward Asisat Oshoala has called on football federations in Africa to give female players in the continent the respect and recognitions they deserve in the game as compared with their men folks.

    Speaking at the press conference after winning the Women’s Africa Footballer of the Year  she tried to defend the Falcons as regards the bonus row that followed their triumph as African Champion at the last Women’s Africa Cup of Nation held in Cameroun last year. Oshoala who emerged as the highest goal scorer of the tournament clamoured for understanding, respect and recognitions as regards the women footballer in Africa.

    “I was actually expecting this question to be asked, this award like I said is not for me. I actually received it on behalf of all the female footballers in Africa to speak for us; we deserve more in my opinion.

    “A lot of things are going around in the world now and we know it happens everywhere. What we go through in Africa right now is nothing to write home about, same thing goes with Ghana and Nigeria as well. I think we deserve to do more, the (Football) the federations have to do more in every country regarding female football as their own.

    “I believe we can actually do better. The men have been doing it for years and they have seen a lot of improvement in the game. I think if the girls can get half of that it will definitely bring joy to a lot of girls, a lot of kids out there that feel they are hopeless right now”, she sermonized.

    Oshoala also expressed happiness being declared the Africa Best Female Footballer for the Year 2016 and promptly dedicated the awards to all the female players in Africa.

    Nigerian young football stars Kelechi Iheanaco,of Manchester City, Alex Iwobi of Arsenal and the Super Falcons team made Nigerians proud at the Silver Jubilee Confederation oo African Football (CAF) Awards held at the International Conference Center, Abuja yesterday.

    The most promising Player Award was fought between Mechak of Congo, Nabi Keita of Senegal and Nigeria’s Kelechi Iheanacho of Nigeria with Iheanacho emerged Africa’s Most Promising Player.

    Between Eric Ayah, Owusu Ansa of Ghana and Alex Iwobi, the winner was Alex Iwobi of Nigeria who won the 2016 Youth Player of the Year.

    For the Africa’s Women’s Footballer of the Year, Asisat Oshoala contested the award with  Elizabeth Ado of Ghana and Camerounian Gabriel Onguene, but Asisat Oshoala who scored six goals at the last Women’s AFCON emerged winner.

    For the Women’s National Team of the Year Award, the Super Falcons of Nigeria beat the Indomitable Lioness of Cameroun and the Bayana Bayana of South Africa to the Award. So Nigeria emerged the best Women National Team of the 2016 to cap their impressive performance that made the country to win the 2016 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations  held in Cameroun last year.

    Other notable winners of the Glo Silver Jubilee CAF Awards 2016 included the National team of the year 2016 Awards which was keenly contested between three giants of African football namely DR Congo, the Terenga Lions of Senegal and the Crane of Ugand but the Crane of Uganda emerged the national team won the the award. For the Club of the Year Award;Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa also won the best Club in the continent in the Year 2016 after emerging CAF

    Champions League Champion. Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa beat  TB Mazembe of DR Congo, , Zesco United Club of Zambia to win the award.

    The National Coach of the Year Award: was contested between Florence Omagbemei of Super Falcons,, Flotrent Ibenge of DR Congo and Pitso Mosimane of Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa.but the Mamelodi Sundowns Coach emerged winner.

    Chelsea loanee Kenneth Omeruo is reportedly involved in a relationship with the golden girl of Nigerian football, Asisat Oshoala, but it appears there are no strings attached.
    Like most female footballers, Oshoala does not earn a crazy amount at her English club, and is profiting financially from her association with the Super Eagles star.
    “Oshoala feels she is a star, and wants to identify with fellow stars. Omeruo is spending his money on her, ” a top source told allnigeriasoccer.com.
    “They are “helping themselves romantically, they are more like friends with benefits.”
    Omeruo donated N2 million to the Super Falcons during their face-off with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) after the African Women Cup of Nations.

    Arsenal Ladies and Super Falcons’ striker, Assisat Oshoala made a special presentation of her London club jerseys to Rivers Angels and Bayelsa Queens in the Federation Cup Women’s final decided yesterday at the Teslim Balogun Stadium,Surulere,Lagos.

    The jerseys were presented on behalf of Oshoala before the kick off of the women’s final by General Manager, Marketing of HS Media Group, Adelola Chu-Osakwe to the captains of both teams, Charity John for Rivers Angels and Esther Udegbe for Bayelsa Queens. The London-based star, who is the official Face of the 2016 Women’s Federation Cup final reiterated that the motive of the presentation is to encourage female football in Nigeria and ginger the female players to reach for greater heights.

    “I’m delighted and honoured to be the Face of the 2016 Women’s Federation Cup final in Nigeria. This presentation of my Arsenal club jerseys to the two teams in the final is a way of giving back to the system that produced me,” Oshaola said.
