Osimhen surpasses Odegbami as second-highest goal scorer for Super Eagles

Nigeria forward, Victor Osimhen, is now officially the second-highest goal scorer for the Super Eagles following his first-half brace against Rwanda, Soccernet.ng reports.

The Super Eagles attacker opened the scoreline for Eric Chelle’s troops during their 2026 World Cup qualifying clash against the Wasps at the Amavubi Stadium.

A cross from Ademola Lookman from the set piece was well met by the in-form Galatasaray forward, who slotted the goal past Ntwari Fiacre. At this point, he was at 24 goals, which surpassed Segun Odegbami’s long-standing 23-goal record.

The Super Eagles talisman, just a few minutes to the end of the first half, notched his 25th goal for the Nigeria national team when he received a ball from the midfield, drove it to the heart of Rwanda’s defence, and flicked it past the goalkeeper to extend Nigeria’s lead.

This officially makes Osimhen the second-highest goal scorer and brings him closer to Rashidi Yekini, who is leading the chart with 37 goals.

  • RUTHLESS FINISHER: Makelele urges Chelsea to sign red-hot Osimhen

RUTHLESS FINISHER: Makelele urges Chelsea to sign red-hot Osimhen

Former Chelsea star Claude Makelele has put forward the name of a striker he’d love to see playing at Stamford Bridge.

There has been a constant discussion about Chelsea and the centre-forward position for many years now. In reality, the Blues have never really replaced Diego Costa, who led the line with so much quality and aggression.

The expectation is that Chelsea will go big on a new striker when the summer transfer window comes around.

Nicolas Jackson, 23, has done a steady job as the Blues’ main striker in the past two seasons, scoring 26 goals in 68 appearances. It’s blatantly obvious that he needs more cover and competition at the top end of the pitch, though.

But  Makelele, who played for Chelsea between 2003 and 2008, has suggested that his former club should try to sign Victor Osimhen in the summer.

“He (Osimhen) is a finisher. I think for the way Chelsea play, they need this kind of striker to have a presence in the box… I think he will be the best option for Chelsea,” Makelele  reportedly told talkSPORT.

During a loan spell in Turkey with Galatasaray this season, he’s already scored 26 goals in 30 games across all competitions.

According to John Obi Mikel, Osimhen still wants to join Chelsea and the deal should be pretty straightforward to sort in the upcoming summer transfer window.

Chelsea contacted Osimhen’s representatives earlier in the season to insist they still have a desire to bring him  to West London.

If the Blues have the chance to pull this transfer move off, they should do everything to make it happen. We agree that he’s the type of clinical goal scorer in the penalty area that the current Chelsea side is desperately missing.

Didier Drogba went on to become a club icon after joining Chelsea at the age of 26 back in 2004. We’d love to see Osimhen follow in his footsteps two decades later.

“Although our focus is on the title race, we haven’t had direct talks with Victor yet. There’s no point in discussing it now,” Kavukcu continued. “Galatasaray is a top club. If that weren’t the case, Victor wouldn’t have come here. Keeping him isn’t impossible.”

  • Roma legend links Osimhen to Juventus

Roma legend links Osimhen to Juventus

Nigeria  ace striker, Victor Osimhen, has yet been  confirmed as a summer transfer item for Italian Old Lady, Juventus.

Amid recent reports that the 26-year-old  would be heading  to the English Premier League giants Manchester United, a  Roma legend,  Roberto Pruzzo  has reportedly claimed ‘ from a reliable source’ that  the Napoli loanee  to Galatasaray  will join Juventus in the summer.

Osimhen is under contract with Napoli but has been playing for Galatasaray on loan this season after failing to reach agreements for permanent moves to PSG, Chelsea and Al-Ahli over the summer.

The Nigerian striker had agreed to a €130m clause when he signed a contract extension with Napoli in 2023, but it will drop to €75m at the end of the season.

Several sources in Italy said Osimhen is among the Juventus targets for the summer but according to Pruzzo, the Nigerian will move to Turin during the next transfer window.

“I know that Juventus’ next striker will be Osimhen,” the former striker told Radio Radio via Sport Mediaset.“A reliable source close to the Nigerian’s entourage revealed it to me in Florence. They are certain they will be going to Turin next year.”

Pruzzo, 69, spent most of his career at Roma, where he played for 10 years, winning a Scudetto in 1982-83.He had started his career at Genoa and retired in 1989, playing for Fiorentina in his last season.

Pruzzo scored 133 goals in 331 Serie A games.

Elsewhere, Man United star, Rasmus Hojlund , has receives Ruben Amorim backing  in spite of the fact that the t Red Devils continue to be linked with Osimhen.

Amorim   reportedly said that Hojlund  is  ‘trying really hard’, as the centre-forward desperately attempts to find his form in the final months of the 2024-25 campaign.

Hojlund had an encouraging first season at Old Trafford after arriving from Atalanta BC in 2023, scoring 16 times in all competitions, including 10 goals in the Premier League, but it has been a struggle this term as Red Devils continue to be linked with Victor Osimhen.

The 22-year-old has only managed seven goals in 36 appearances for the Red Devils during the current campaign, and he has not found the back of the net in the Premier League since the start of December.

“He’s trying really hard. He gave everything. He makes the runs,” Amorim told reporters. “We know that he also has [to play against] a high line and he uses this space to win, to fight.

“The other things are going to appear in the right moment. He has to continue to play, not be anxious in that position. He did a great run to win the position. Sometimes the ball comes, sometimes it doesn’t. So he needs to think in the best way, in this case, in the next game.”

Yet  Osimhen, who is currently on loan at Galatasaray, is being heavily linked with a switch to Old Trafford, with the Nigeria international believed to be a genuine target for the Red Devils this summer.

  • Osimhen tips Galatasaray for Turkish Super Lig title

Osimhen tips Galatasaray for Turkish Super Lig title

Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen has stressed that Galatasaray have what it takes to win the Turkish Super Lig this season despite Sunday’s 3-3 draw against Kasimpasa.

Osimhen, who recorded his 22nd goal of the season across 28 games in all competitions with a brace against Kasimpasa, pointed out that the drawn match was disappointing even as he praised his teammates for their efforts.

“I would say disappointment,” Osimhen said  about the match. “That’s the best way to put it.”

    He added:

“We fought against an effective opponent. I’m proud of my teammates for their efforts. Football is like that sometimes. This is a really tough league. You have to fight well from the first minute to the last minute. You can be punished very quickly.”

Galatasaray remains at the top of the league with 65 points with just four points ahead of second-placed Fenerbahce and Osimhen remains confident in his side’s ability to reclaim their winning form.

“We continue in the championship race. We have all the quality needed to win,” he added.

Osimhen, who joined Galatasaray during the winter transfer window, also emphasized his strong bond with his teammates and their shared determination to fight for success.

“I love this team very much. I love my teammates very much, too. I want to do everything for success. I want to support them. I think my friends have the same mentality, it doesn’t matter if they are in the first 11 or on the bench, it is very important for everyone to fight together,” he said.

The  25-year-old is  now eager to help Galatasaray bounce back as they prepare to face Alanyaspor on Sunday, with the aim of securing all three points.

“We will go into every match to get three  points and we are the biggest candidate for the championship,” Osimhen affirmed.

Meanwhile, Former Besiktas and Antalyaspor manager Sergen Yalçın has blamed Galatasaray wingers Baris Yılmaz and Roland Sallai for offering little support to Victor Osimhen this season, calling for their replacement.

Despite Yılmaz scoring 10 league goals, he has managed just one assist in 24 league appearances, while Sallai has contributed only one goal and no assists in 19 games. As Galatasaray’s starting wingers, both are expected to provide Osimhen with quality service, but that has been lacking.

Speaking after the game, former Galatasaray player and ex-Besiktas coach Sergen Yalçın did not hold back in his criticism, blaming the duo for failing to support Osimhen, who has been in outstanding form and capable of leading the team to the title.

“The right-wing, the left wing—where are they?” Yalçın questioned. “It was said that these are very talented players, but where are they? No, no! You asked what Galatasaray should do at half-time, and I said they need a proper winger.”

The 52-year-old particularly called out their inefficiency in the crucial match against Kasimpasa, emphasizing that Galatasaray must reinforce their wings to maximize Osimhen’s potential.

  • Osimhen unsure of  future with  Galatasaray

Osimhen unsure of  future with  Galatasaray

Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen has failed to acknowledge where his future lies after he was quizzed by the Turkish press in the aftermath of Galatasaray’s goalless home draw with Fenerbahce on Monday night.

Turkish journalists were eager to know if Osimhen would make himself available to the club beyond the end of the season but the Nigerian was evasive choosing to dwell on the moment and not what would happen to him at the end of the season.

The highly anticipated match, which saw a massive police presence of reportedly 32,000 officers and foreign referees to ensure a fair game, ended without a goal. Despite the lack of goals, the match was an exciting display of skill and determination from both teams.

Osimhen, who has been a key player for Galatasaray this season, posed a significant threat to Fenerbahce’s defence despite being man-marked throughout the match as he won three fouls, the most in the game.

After the match, Osimhen spoke to the media emphasizing his focus on the present when quizzed if the game was his last against Fenerbahce as a Galatasaray player: “To be honest, I don’t know…

“Last few months, nobody ever thought I would come here to a big club like Galatasaray. For me, I live for the moment. What’s going to happen in the summer, I don’t really know.”

Osimhen reiterated his affection for the Turkish side, expressing his love for everyone associated with the club: “I want everyone to understand something – that I really love this club so much, I love these fans, I love everyone associated with this club. From the president, to the coach, to the staff, everyone associated with this club. So for me, it’s a privilege, and I’m really enjoying my time here.”

With a loss avoided, Galatasaray will now focus on securing the title with 12 matches remaining in the season.

Winning the Super Lig would mark their third consecutive title, replicating the team’s historic success in the late 1990s.

During that period, Galatasaray won four consecutive league titles from the 1996/1997 season to the 1999/2000 season and Osimhen as well as his teammates will be determined to make history by winning the title again this season.
