Osimhen begins intensive recovery next week

Victor Osimhen has not returned to Italy yet and Napoli expect him to start the intensive phase of his recovery work next week, with his contract situation continuing to loom in the background.

The 24-year-old striker has been sidelined since October 13 after suffering a hamstring muscle injury in Nigeria’s 2-2 draw with Saudi Arabia in a friendly. He has missed the club’s last three consecutive games.

Osimhen has remained in Nigeria since suffering the injury, leaving Napoli waiting for his return. In the meantime, much has been written about his contract negotiations with the club, shrouding his future in doubt.

Yesterday, the Gazzetta dello Sport detailed how Osimhen still hasn’t returned to Italy yet and Napoli want him to enter the intensive phase of his recovery work next week, allowing them to start planning for his return.

A year ago, the Nigerian striker suffered the same muscle injury on September 7 and was back on the pitch by October 12.

Napoli hope he’ll be fit to face Atalanta on November 25, a match that could prove key in the race for the top spots in Serie A.

Regarding his contract, Aurelio De Laurentiis is confident that he can reopen talks with Osimhen’s agent Roberto Calenda to try and finally reach an agreement. This may prove impossible, however, making a sale next summer possible.

    • Rohr hails Nigerian ace

Federal Capital Territory Football Association (FCTFA) chairman, Adam Mouktar Mohammed , said the choice for the 2023 Men’s African Football of the Year would be too close to call despite Victor Osimhen remarkable 8th place finish at Monday’s Ballon d’Or awards in Paris.

The 24-year-old Nigeria international striker finished as one of the Top Ten best players in the prestigious awards after his 26 Serie goals helped Napoli to clinch the Italian title for the first time in 33 years. He personally scooped the season’s goal scorer award with his 31 total tally in the season under review as well as being the continental top scorer with 11 goals in the qualifying tournament for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) due next year in Cote d’Ivoire.

But Mohammed who was recently bestowed with an Excellence Award at the maiden Nigeria-France Awards in Paris, told NationSport that Osimhen would face stiff opposition for the 2023 Africa’s Best Player.

“ Frankly, Osimhen has done enough to be crowned the next African Footballer of the Year and he deserves it since he came 8th on the Ballon ‘d’ Or list,” Mohammed told NationSport yesterday from Paris.“ He won the Scudetto with Napoli; he became the first African to be the goal king in Italy as he even did better than (George) Weah and (Samuel) Eto’o and he was also the top scorer in the AFCON qualifiers.”

Yet Mohammed reckoned that Nigeria’s non-qualification for Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup where Morocco posted Africa’s best performance with semi-final finish, would significantly weigh against Osimhen among other factors.

“Though performance at the World Cup tournament is seen as the biggest platform, what Osimhen has done with Napoli since Maradona days should count for something,” he further explained.“ With these awards emotions are involved so you never know and with the Africa’s Best Player awards, there had been big surprises in the past so we will see.”

He added: “His challenge will come from Hakimi who won French Ligue 1 title with PSG and went to the World Cup semi-final that is massive.”

“ Then , Algerian striker, Riyad Mahrez, won the treble with Manchester City and you have to consider the sharp regional divide between Anglophone and Francophone which is a another political angle as far as the poll is concerned .

“But all in all, what Osimhen has achieved is incredible and he deserves to win it,” he noted.

In a related development, former Super Eagles coach, Gernot Rohr said he was impressed with Osimhen’s placement in the top ten list of the 2023 Ballon d’Or awards.

“It’s already great for this boy(Osimhen) to be in the list of the best players; the future will bring better results,” the former Bayern Munich defender said.

  • Ballon d’Or  top finish brightens Osimhen’s  future, says Amuneke

Ballon d’Or  top finish brightens Osimhen’s  future, says Amuneke

African football legend Emmanuel Amuneke said Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen must be proud of his top finish at the 2023 Ballon d’Or, adding finishing   8th  amongst the very best players in the world is a justification that the Napoli forward has a brighter future.

Amuneke, who gave Osimhen his break at the international level with Nigeria’s FIFA U-17 World Cup-winning team of 2015, said he was excited with the progress of his protégé for obvious reasons.

“Osimhen finishing eight is a very good news to me personally as well as all Nigerians for having one of our players  being nominated first among the best footballers in the world; and for also finishing in the top list of the 2023 Ballon d’Or  is a very good development,” Amuneke, 1994 African Footballer of the Year, told NationSports.“ Yes, finishing eighth on the list means that the future is even brighter for him because there’s possibility of Osimhen finishing at the very top of the ladder if he continues the same way he’d been doing Napoli.”

Last season, Osimhen broke almost  available scoring records in the Serie A as his 26 tally helped Napoli to win the Scudetto for the first time in 33 years. He scored five other goals in other competitions including the UEFA Champions League to become the top scorer in Italy for the 2022/2023 season; even as he emerged top scorer in the qualifying tournament for the delayed 2023 Africa Cup of Nations(AFCON) with an impressive 11 goals.

“ Of course, he can win the Ballon d’Or one day if he continues with what he’d done this past season,” Amuneke who scored the brace  as Nigeria beat  Zambia 2-1  to win the 1994 AFCON in Tunisia, further said. “He has to keep working hard because today’s football demand a lot of intensity with many top players on parade and finishing 8th this time means he’s very close to the door.”

He added: “We need to celebrate him and all of us that love him, need to encourage him to do more and let him realize that he still has a long way to go despite all that he has achieved so far.

“ I believe the best can be achieved by Osimhen and congratulations to him again  for being among the current top 10 best players in the world, he should just continue to give his best because the sky can only be his limit.”

Monday’s historic event means he became the first Nigerian to finish in the top 10 of the Ballon D’or. Last season, he became the first African to emerge top scorer in the Italian Serie A, as he fired Napoli to the Scudetto.

Meanwhile,  Enoh has pledged his unwavering support to  Osimhen and all Nigerian athletes, emphasizing the importance of investing in sports development at all levels, assuring that his ministry will continue to work tirelessly to create an enabling environment for Nigerian sportsmen and sportswomen to flourish on the international stage.

He  further expressed  optimism for Osimhen’s future: “Victor’s journey in football is far from over, and I believe he has the potential to achieve even greater heights in the coming years. 2023 Ballon d’Or: Osimhen, Oshoala, Messi  other know fate today

Nigeria International strikers  Victor Osimhen  as well as  Asisat Oshoala would yet know how far  they  have progressed in the scheme of things as the identities of the 2023  Ballon d’Or  award  winners  are revealed today in Paris.

The 24-old-year  Osimhen  last season helped  Napoli  to win the Italian Scudetto  for  the first since the Diego Maradona era  when he contributed  some 26 Serie A  goals plus another five goals in other  competition  to be  crowned  the season’s top scorer.

Oshoala on her part  was in the scoring mix as  FC Barcelona Femeni  claimed  the  women’s Liga F  title and the UEFA Women’s Champions League trophy.

The award ceremony will feature four main categories including three for male players and one of female football excellence, with the reformatted voting criteria focused on the previous season (2022/23) as opposed to the calendar year.

That tweak to the structure has placed Messi as the firm favourite to clinch an incredible eighth Ballon d’Or after leading Argentina to the FIFA World Cup title at the end of 2022.

Osimhen  at the weekend  hinted he would be on Cloud nine should he win the Ballon d’Or one day.

    Injured Osimhen back in Nigeria

Injured Nigeria’s Super Eagles forward Victor Osimhen has returned to Nigeria to continue his recovery, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The energetic attacker sustained the injury while representing the country in an international friendly game against Saudi Arabia in Portugal.

According to the Italian football news outlet Corriere dello Sport, Osimhen travelled with the team to Germany for the UEFA Champions League but didn’t stay with the team instead he moved to Nigeria for personal reasons.

“Victor Osimhen was traveling to Frankfurt but not to stay in Germany and obviously not to follow the team to Berlin as some had suspected after the images among the fans in Capodichino.

The striker had flown to Frankfurt on Tuesday but to make a stop in Nigeria for personal reasons.

“The attacker had already spoken about it with De Laurentiis. The trip was therefore planned,” the publication said.

  • My plans for the future, by Osimhen

My plans for the future, by Osimhen

Victor Osimhen reveals he still ‘gets goosebumps’ when scoring for Napoli, why he keeps wearing that protective mask, Ballon d’Or dreams and choosing between MLS and Saudi Arabia.

The Nigeria international spoke to Mario Balotelli’s Twitch Channel, Vox to Box on TV Play.

He is currently out of action for at least a month after sustaining an injury on international duty with Nigeria.

Osimhen refused to comment when asked who deserves the Ballon d’Or between Lionel Messi and Erling Braut Haaland, but was asked if he had this trophy as an ambition.

“If one day I could get closer to win it, that would be more than a dream comes true for me. Just playing at this level is already amazing for me. If it comes, it comes,” replied the striker.

When Osimhen first arrived at Napoli, he asked for advice from Kalidou Koulibaly.

“When I first came, I was chatting with Koulibaly, he told me about the city, the people and the stadiums. In my previous clubs, they don’t announce the names of the scorers, so it’s a whole different feeling to have 60,000 people screaming your name.

“When I scored my first goal, it was against Atalanta and during COVID, so not many fans there, but I still got goosebumps. I get the same feeling now, it goes through my veins, as it is really special.”

The protective mask was made for him after he sustained multiple facial fractures in an accidental collision when Napoli played Inter.

Despite no longer technically needing it, this has now become his trademark.

“I am so used to wearing it now that I think I always will. I risked a lot that time, now it has become a sort of trademark for me.”

Osimhen is now in his third Serie A season, having been crowned Capocannoniere last term, so who does he admire?

“Ciro Immobile is really strong, I really like the way he plays and he is a leader of his team. I respect him a great deal, he has this deadly instinct in front of goal. I just started, he is a legend.”

Osimhen’s main competition for the Capocannoniere title this time around would seem to be Inter captain Lautaro Martinez.

“When I was up against Rafael Leao, he really impressed me, there are few with talent like him. It is great for Serie A to have players like this. Lautaro Martinez is a reference point for Inter, challenging him at a distance pushes me to keep doing better.

“When I was young, I tried to model myself on Didier Drogba. I watched many of his videos and tried to learn as much as possible.”

Luciano Spalletti took Napoli to the Scudetto, but then left to take over the job of Italy coach.

“He transformed my way of playing, he is a genius. He asks a lot of his players, but he gives it back too. Italy are on the right track with him.”

There were reports that the Saudi Pro League were prepared to make an eye-watering offer to sign Osimhen this summer, but he was not interested and it seems that will continue to be the case. He was asked where he would choose between MLS and Saudi Arabia.

“I wouldn’t know now, but if they were the same conditions, I would go in America.”

  • Osimhen’s future undecided

    Osimhen’s future undecided

Napoli striker Victor Osimhen is yet to decide his future at Napoli or elsewhere, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Over the weekend the Nigerian forward was linked with a move to Liverpool as speculation continues to swirl over his future with the Serie A champions.

However, Romano has claimed that reports linking Osimhen with a future switch to Anfield are wide of the mark and in fact, claimed that the Napoli forward is yet to decide on where his future lies.

“Some media is reporting that Victor Osimhen already agreed contract terms with Liverpool,” said Romano. “Guys from what I’m told, Victor Osimhen hasn’t agreed anything with any club – not even with Napoli.

“There’s no agreement on the contract extension. Napoli made a really important proposal to Osimhen, in terms of contract, very important salary, the biggest in Napoli history is on the table for Osimhen. But he has not decided and he has not agreed anything with any club.

“So Osimhen will take his time. Reports of an agreement with Liverpool are not true. For sure, Liverpool and many other clubs are keeping an eye on the situation of many strikers.

“But at the moment for Osimhen, nothing is agreed and nothing is decided.

While Osimhen’s future is still up in the air, one player who is unlikely to be moving to Anfield or elsewhere in the near future is Torino defender Perr Schuurs.

UCL: Union  Berlin  confront Napoli without Osimhen

Union Berlin manager Urs Fischer was confident on Monday his struggling side would get “back on track” against Napoli in  today’s Champions League clash.

Champions League debutants Union host the Serie A winners in the German capital  tonight on a horror run of eight straight losses – by far the longest streak since the side’s first-ever promotion in 2019.

“We’re making another attempt at getting back on track” the Swiss manager said, telling reporters in Berlin his side would approach the clash “with confidence and positive energy.”

Union are still chasing their first point in the competition, having suffered injury-time defeats away at Real Madrid and at home to Braga, the latter after taking a 2-0 lead.

Fischer said he felt supported by the club despite the dry run and backed his team to return to form.

“We’ve achieved our goals and celebrated successes together in the past few years.

     “Now it’s a little stormy.

“I’m not worried about what might happen in two, three weeks – I’m concentrating on the here and now. Our task is Napoli.”

Midfielder Rani Khedira, who made his first start of the season on Saturday after returning from injury, said the scale of the encounter meant his team were up for the task.

“It’s a Champions League game against a very interesting opponent, so the mood has to be good automatically, even if things are a little complicated for us right now.”

While star Napoli striker Victor Osimhen will miss the clash with a hamstring injury, Fischer warned of forward Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, who scored a double in the Italian side’s 3-1 win over Hellas Verona on Saturday.

Fischer would not be drawn on whether nine-time Serie A champion Leonardo Bonucci would start the game, the Italian captain having spent Saturday’s 3-0 loss to Stuttgart on the bench.

The coach did however reveal that Germany defender Robin Gosens was “under treatment” for an injury ahead of the game.

Gosens has been a rare bright light for Union this season, impressing since his move from Inter Milan in the summer.

“But I’m really positive things will work out with Robin tomorrow.”
