Napoli condemn sale of Osimhen’s doll

Serie A Champions Napoli have condemned the sale and manufacturing of a Victor Osimhen doll, detaching themselves from the item.

Images of an Osimhen doll went viral on social media recently and the doll, which has the trademark hair and mask of the Nigerian striker, has been made out of the template of one of the most prominent dolls in Italy. It is, in fact, a new design of the Cicciobello Bomber, which is made by Giochi Preziosi.

It was reported in the media that the doll has been authorised by Napoli and Aurelio de Laurentiis and that it will be sold soon later this month.

But Napoli have released a statement, confirming that the Partenopei never authorised the sale and they condemned the reports which state otherwise. They have stated that the product is ‘unofficial’ and the club never authorised it from their end. The club have now taken actions to protect its interests.

    UCL: ‘How we caged Osimhen’

Despite acknowledging the quality of Victor Osimhen before the UEFA Champions League match, Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti has said that caging the Nigerian was all they needed to win 3-2 against Napoli on Wednesday.

Ancelotti, who described Osimhen as a dangerous striker, said deploying Antonio Riduger to man-mark Osimhen was a good decision.

“We wanted to be two against one with him (Osimhen), the central defenders did very well and didn’t give him any space behind them. Against Osimhen it’s difficult not to suffer, especially on aerial balls, but we did well,” Ancelotti said in a post-match press conference.

He admitted that it was a difficult match for his lads against his former team in Naples. “It was a difficult match, fought from start to finish. We could have avoided the first goal but afterwards we started playing well. Then at the best moment we conceded a very dubious penalty, but in the end we won.”

He however, queried the referee for awarding a penalty to Napoli, which he said was absurd. “I told him it’s not a penalty, it’s true that his hand was a little covered but he was slipping and generally these penalties aren’t called,” he added.

He showered praises on Jude Bellingham, who was named the MVP of the match.

He said: “What’s surprising about Bellingham is that he’s 20 years old, he shows extraordinary qualities but he’s only 20. He’s showing all the talent he has,

    what’s surprising is his personality.”

Victor Osimhen was on the losing side after Napoli were beaten 2-3 by visiting Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League (UCL) tie in Naples.

Napoli took the lead in the ninth minute through Leo Ostigard but the goal became their undoing as Real Madrid took charge of the match for Vinicius Junior leveled up for the visitors in the 27th minute while Real Madrid increased the lead through Jude Bellingham in the 34th minute to take the lead into second.

Napoli came out smoking in the second half and they were rewarded for their efforts through a penalty by Piotr Zielinski in the 54th minute to put the tie at 2-2.

Victor Osimhen has broken his silence on the TikTok videos and controversy, assuring coming to Napoli was ‘a wonderful decision’ and he will not ‘allow anyone to come between us.’

He decided to step up after the Ambassador for Nigeria suggested a meeting with his Italian counterpart and there were some accusations that the jokey videos were not just insulting, but even racist.

“Coming to the City of Naples in 2020 was a wonderful decision for me. The People of Naples have shown me so much love and kindness, and I will not allow anyone to come between us.

“The passion of the People of Naples fuels my fire to always play with my heart and soul, and the love for the badge is unwavering as I wear it with pride.

“The accusations against the People of Naples are untrue. I have a lot of friends that are Napolitans and have become part of my family and everyday life.

“I appreciate Nigerians and everyone for lending their voices to support and reach out to me. Thanks so much, I’m forever grateful.

“Let’s continue to spread unity, respect and understanding.

The striker had taken down all the images of himself in a Napoli jersey from his social media pages and celebrated scoring goals in muted terms over the last week.

It was all sparked by the official Napoli account posting a couple of videos on TikTok, above all one mocking his penalty miss against Bologna.

His agent Roberto Calenda released a statement insisting it was “unacceptable” and he would be prepared to take legal action against the club.

A statement from Napoli stopped short of an apology, only assuring any offence was not intentional, while the social media manager stepped down yesterday, only for it to be confirmed this decision was made weeks ago and was not in any way related to the Osimhen situation.

Osimhen: Napoli sack social media executive over TikTok videos

Napoli’s social media executive has stepped down from his role amid the ongoing saga over the club’s highly-critiqued antics on TikTok.

The Serie A side sparked controversy this week when they posted videos on their TikTok account mocking striker Victor Osimhen, leading to his agent threatening to take legal action.

The first video posted showed the 24-year-old appealing for a penalty, with sped-up audio captioned ‘Gimme penalty please’ before showing him blazing the spot-kick wide of the post.

A second video from the club’s account, which has been circulated online and since deleted, compared Osimhen to a ‘coconut’ – widely viewed as a racial slur.

And now, in the wake of the saga, the club’s social media executive has left the club and confirmed the news via a post on his personal Instagram account.

Alessio Fortino wrote: ‘Today, after 805 days, my professional adventure with SSC Naples ends.

“For many this job would be comparable to a dream, for me it was simple daily reality: a reality built on commitment and fueled by the constant desire to learn and play.

“I cannot help but express my deepest gratitude to all the colleagues, collaborators, partners and supporters I’ve met along this long journey for making this experience so special.

“Leaving the company with a baggage of great memories and an excitement for the new adventures that lie ahead.

“Thanks again for everything and see you soon! Alessio’.

In response to the incident, Napoli insisted they ‘never wanted to mock’ Osimhen but stopped short of publicly apologizing for the incident.

Osimhen received a private apology from Napoli directors on Wednesday for the club’s behaviour on social media, but he is upset that they did not also make a public apology, according to Il Corriere dello Sport.

Osimhen started the match at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium and scored the second goal in a 4-1 win, although he refused to celebrate.

He then played again in their 4-0 away win against Lecce, where he scored their second goal of the day.

The Nigerian forward rose highest to head home a deep cross from winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia in the first-half.

Osimhen scores again to fire warning to Real Madrid

Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen scored the second goal for Napoli in their 4-0 destruction of Lecce at Stadio Via del Mare, Soccernet reports.

Osimhen has been caught up in a controversy with Napoli after the club posted a video to mock him for missing a penalty in their goalless draw at Bologna last week.

However, he played in the next game against Udinese and scored in their 4-1 victory.

The Serie A champions returned to action in a tie at Lecce. This time, Osimhen started from the bench while Giovanni Simeone was on the pitch.

The Partenopeans dominated the early exchanges, and they eventually got the lead via a header from Leo Ostigard in the 16th minute.

Napoli saw out the lead until the break. And then, Osimhen was introduced at half-time. The 24-year-old Nigerian striker did not need much time to make his presence felt. Napoli went on a quick attack, with Khvicha Kvaratskhelia running the show. Then, he sent a cross into the box where Osimhen was lurking. The big hitman made no mistake from close range, as he jumped higher than his market and sent a header into the net to make it 2-0.

Osimhen doubled Napoli’s lead at Napoli just six minutes after coming off the bench. He is now the joint-top scorer in Serie A this season with five goals.

Gianluca Gaetano scored the third for Napoli in the 88th minute, while Matteo Politano scored the fourth from the spot in stoppage time.

Will Osimhen quit Napoli for  Al-Hilal amid  TikTok row?

Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal are thought to be the front-runners for Victor Osimhen’s signature should the striker decide to leave Napoli in the wake a controversial social media post that appeared to mock the player, according to reports in Italy.

The Serie A side courted controversy when they posted two videos to their TikTok account that appeared to make fun of the 24-year-old, with one showing Osimhen missing a penalty, and the second – which has been circulated online and since deleted – compared the player to a ‘coconut’, widely viewed as a racial slur.

Osimhen’s agent Roberto Calenda threatened the club with legal action as the videos gained traction on social media, but amidst the storm of controversy, Osimhen started for the Scudetto winners against Udinese on Wednesday evening and scored in the 4-1 win.

But, as Mail Sport reported on Thursday, the striker is thought to have been already unhappy at the club before the social media firestorm, and could look to move on from Stadio Diego Armando Maradona just six months after playing an instrumental role in ending the club’s 33-year title drought.

Should he wish to transfer away from Napoli, the strongest interest could come from one of Saudi Arabia’s biggest clubs.

As per Gazzetta dello Sport, Al-Hilal promised Osimhen an astronomical five-deal that would see the player make up to £38million-per-year over the summer, and were set to pay his steep release clause at an estimated £173m.

Napoli’s owner Aurelio De Laurentiis was adamant however that the player who had been crucial to the club’s success last season would remain in Campania.

He is thought to have told the Gulf state club that they couldn’t even ‘buy a foot’ with the deal offered.

The Saudi Pro League side opted instead to buy a raft of international attacking talent – including Neymar Jnr, Ruben Neves, and Aleksandar Mitrovic before the window closed in September.

Bayern Munich and Newcastle are also thought to have made advances to the player during the summer’s transfer window, but Napoli’s intention to cling onto Osimhen kept him in Rudi Garcia’s set-up.

Less than four months later, the scene is entirely different. Osimhen is believed to have fallen out with Garcia due to playing a diminished role in his side and was furious when substituted over the weekend during the club’s tie against Bologna.

Following the release of the disturbing TikTok, Osimhen went as far as to delete all evidence of his playing for Napoli from his Instagram.

An earlier issue between the two parties involved an issue over Napoli denying Osimhen permission to film a charity video for causes in Africa, which is thought to have deepened a growing rift.

Osimhen is also thought to be disappointed that the club did not initially make a public apology following the TikToks’ publication.

The club’s hierarchy spoke to their player in private on Wednesday, but waited another 24 hours before releasing the statement which spoke of how significantly Osimhen was valued by the club.

“Calcio Napoli, wishing to avoid any exploitation of the issue, point out that we never wanted to offend or mock Victor Osimhen, who is a treasure of this club,’ the statement read.

“As proof of that, during the summer training retreat, the Club firmly rebuffed every offer that was received for the striker’s transfer abroad.

“Social media, in particular TikTok, has always used an expressive form of language with a light heart and creativity, without wanting to, as in the case with Osimhen as protagonist, have any intention of insult or derision.

“In any case, if Victor perceived any offence towards him, this was not what the club intended.”

The Nigeria international is yet to respond to the missive offered by the club, which does not contain an explicit apology.

Should Osimhen look to move on in January, Chelsea are believed to be another party interested in securing the services of the prolific striker as they seek to find a solution to their goalscoring issues.

The west London side scored just one goal in September to seal Carabao Cup victory against Brighton, ending a run of three matches without making the scoresheet.

Sports Minister rallies support for Osimhen

Minister of Sports Development Senator John Enoh has rallied support for Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen over the face-off between the Nigerian and his Italian club Napoli in the past few days.

The Serie A club posted a bizarre video to TikTok seemingly mocking their own player earlier this week, despite the prominent role the Nigeria international played in securing the Scudetto title last season.

In a statement issued by the minister yesterday, Enoh said they are making frantic efforts to encourage and support Osimhen at this time.

“Over the past weekend, the developments that came out of Napoli as it pertains to Super Eagles forward Victor Osimhen saddened me greatly. The travails of Tobi Amusan have been no less so. This necessitated why last week, I made efforts to reach her directly.

“More so, my office is making efforts to reach Victor Osimhen directly as well, so as to understand first-hand what the issues are. We are committed to establishing the facts of the matter.

“I am also in touch with the Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs, H.E. Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, as well as the Nigerian Ambassador to the Republic of Italy, Ambassador Mfawa Abam. Together, we are employing diplomatic avenues with Italy for a more decorous approach in looking into the matter as it is,” the minister said.

He said that the President Bola Tinubu administration is committed to ensuring Nigerian sports men and women are accorded the respect they deserve.

“Under the present administration of His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, we are committed to ensuring our sports men and women are accorded the respect they deserve and are not exposed to injustice, discrimination and unfair trolling that could be detrimental to their career trajectory.

He added: “Upon assumption of office, I made it abundantly clear, in words and deeds, that the welfare of our athletes, be they home-based or foreign-based, would be our topmost priority, as we create the environment that enables and ensures their continued success.

Napoli pleads with Osimhen after TikTok video row

Napoli have issued an explanation for their video that mocked striker Victor Osimhen after a statement on behalf of the player claimed he ‘reserves the right to take legal action’

Italian champions Napoli have clarified they “did not intend to cause offence” to their striker Victor Osimhen after he was mocked on their TikTok account.

Osimhen will ‘reserve the right to take legal action’ after a bizarre video was posted on Tuesday that appeared to make fun of the Nigerian international, following his penalty miss in the weekend Serie A draw against Bologna.

“Napoli, in order to avoid any exploitation on the topic, specifies that it never intended to offend or make fun of Victor Osimhen, the club’s technical asset,” a statement released from the club read.

“To demonstrate this, during the summer training camp, the club firmly rejected every offer received for the striker’s transfer abroad. It is a common experience that on social media, in particular on TikTok, expressive language has always been created with lightness and creativity, without having had, in the case involving Osimhen, any intention of mockery or derision.

“However, if Victor had perceived any offense towards him, that is not what the club intended.”

Osimhen helped fire Napoli to a first league title in over 30 years last time out with a standout campaign in which he netted 31 goals across all competitions. However, he was the target of a bizarre video posted from the club’s own social media profile on Tuesday.

The video centred on an incident in the club’s scoreless draw against Bologna on Sunday, in which Osimhen spurned the opportunity to win the game from the penalty spot. That proved to be the game’s defining moment and was a rare miss from the Nigerian – who had bagged three goals in his first five matches this season.

Yet Napoli’s peculiar video focused on Osimhen appealing for the penalty, using a strange and rather unsettling sped-up voice – which appeared to have no context, other than to mock the striker for his attempts to persuade the decision to be given. He started and scored for Napoli in Wednesday’s 4-1 win over Udinese, but did not take his side’s penalty during the match.

Osimhen’s agent threatens Napoli with legal action over TikTok post

Victor Osimhen’s agent has threatened legal action against Napoli after a video was published on the club’s official social media mocking the Nigeria striker for missing a penalty in the weekend’s goalless draw at Bologna.

The TikTok post, which was subsequently deleted, showed Osimhen failing to score his spot-kick in the Serie A match with a high-pitched voice saying “gimme penalty please”, sparking a furious reaction from Roberto Calenda.

“What happened today on Napoli’s official profile on the TikTok platform is not acceptable. A video mocking Victor was first made public and then, but now belatedly, deleted,” Calenda said on Twitter, now called X, late on Tuesday evening.

”(It is) A serious fact that causes very serious damage to the player and adds to the treatment that the boy is suffering in the last period between media trials and fake news.

“We reserve the right to take legal action and any useful initiative to protect Victor.”

Osimhen has struggled in the opening weeks of the season for misfiring Italian champions Napoli but has stilled netted three times in six appearances.

The 24-year-old has become an icon in Naples after scoring 31 times in all competitions last season as Napoli won their first league title since 1990.

Osimhen, who was a target for Chelsea and Manchester United in the summer, is in the process of negotiating a contract extension with Napoli, with his current deal expiring in June 2025.

He was signed by Napoli from Lille for an initial 70 million euros just over three years ago, a transfer which is being investigated by Italian authorities.

On Tuesday Italian media reported that Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis is among those being investigated by prosecutors in Rome for allegedly falsely inflating the value of the transfer with four players sold to Lille as part of the deal.

Napoli are seventh in Serie A, seven points behind league leaders Inter Milan after winning just two of their opening five domestic matches.
