    Osun Assembly passes bill increasing stipends for political office holders, others

    The Osun State House of Assembly yesterday passed a bill increasing stipends for political office holders and others in the state.

    The Osun State Public /Political Office Holders Revised Remuneration Package Amendment No 2, Bill 2024 scaled through third Reading yesterday.

    Deputy Majority Leader of the House Adekunle Oladimeji moved the motion for the final passage of the Bill, and was seconded by the Chief Whip, Olawale Akerele.

    The Speaker, Adewale Egbedun, said a clean copy of the Bill would be forwarded to Governor Ademola Adeleke for his assent.

    According to the Speaker, the Osun State Public Political Office Holders Revised Renumeration Package Amendment No 2, Bill 2024, is to improve the standard of living of the Public and few political office holders in tandem with the five points agenda of Governor Ademola Adeleke.

    “Public Officers, Part Time Board Members and Chairmen would benefit more from the remuneration while the legislators are exempted from the package.”

    The bill, which was last amended in 2008, was presented to the House April 30 by Majority Leader, Kofoworola Adewunmi (Ede North), as a private member bill.

    Osun Assembly on Monday passed a bill increasing the stipends for political office holders and others in the State.

    The Osun State Public /Political Office Holders Revised Remuneration Package Amendment No 2, Bill 2024 scaled through its third reading on the floor the Assembly.

    At the sitting, the Deputy Majority Leader of the House, Adekunle Oladimeji moved the motion for the final passage of the Bill and was seconded by the Chief Whip Olawale Akerele.

    Speaker Adewale Egbedun said a clean copy of the Bill would be forwarded to the Governor, Ademola Adeleke to sign.

    According to the Speaker, Osun State Public Political Office Holders Revised Renumeration Package Amendment No 2, Bill 2024, is aimed at improving the standard of living of the Public and few political office holders in tandem with the five-point agenda of Governor Ademola Adeleke.

    The bill, last amended in 2008, was presented to the House on 30th April by Majority Leader, Kofoworola Adewunmi, the lawmaker representing Ede North State Constituency.

    Osun Assembly passes bill extending judges’ retirement age to 70

    Osun House of Assembly, on Tuesday, passed a bill extending the retirement age of judges and other judicial officers from 65 to 70 years.

    The bill is entitled: “Osun State High Court and Customary Court of Appeal Registrars, Secretary to the State Judicial Council, State Counsels in the Ministry of Justice, State Magistrates and District Customary Courts’ Presidents Retirement Age Bill, 2023.”

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the bill was passed during the plenary session, held at the assembly complex in Osogbo, after passing the third reading.

    Speaker of the assembly, Mr Adewale Egbedun, said that the final copy of the bill would be produced and forwarded to the Governor, Sen. Ademola Adeleke, for his assent.

    Egbedun expressed appreciation to his colleagues for the conduct of the 2024 budget presentation and defence by various ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs) in the state.

    NAN reports that the budget defence exercise, which lasted for 11 days, saw 90 MDAs appearing before the House Committee on Budget and Appropriation, chaired by Mr Saheed Fatunmise.

    The last set of MDAs that appeared before the committee on Monday included: Osun Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Osun East, Osun West and Osun Central Education District Offices.

    Others were: Osun Ministry of Culture and Tourism, Osun Tourism Board and Osun Council for Arts and Culture.

  • Ex-Osun Assembly speaker resigns PDP membership

    A former Speaker of Osun House of Assembly, Mr Adejare Bello, has resigned his membership of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP).

    Bello, in a letter addressed to the PDP state’s Chairman, Mr Soji Adagunodo, on Monday in Osogbo, said he was resigning his membership of the party because “the party had been hijacked by some certain elements”.

    The former speaker was one of the seven PDP governorship aspirants that stepped down during the party’s primary in July 21, 2018.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Bello contested as the party’s deputy governorship candidate to Otunba Iyiola Omisore in the 2014 governorship election.

    Bello alleged that the party was shifting from the intendments of the founding fathers of the party.

    “The recent events within Osun State chapter of PDP and the National PDP in general, are to my mind inimical and a total shift from the intendments of the founding fathers of the party.

    “This intendment, which was built on justice, fairness and service, had caused me to reconsider my membership of the party, which I hereby resign.

    “It is my sincere belief that some certain elements had hijacked the rudder of the party and changed its cause toward an unknown path, which I am not ready to take,’’ he said.

    Bello, however, thanked the leadership of the party for the opportunities given to him to serve as the speaker of the assembly from 2003 to 2011.

  • Osun Assembly passes Asset Management Agency Establishment Bill

    The Osun State House of Assembly has passed the “State of Osun Asset Management Agency Establishment Bill 2018”.

    A statement by the Chairman of the House Committee on Information and Strategy, Olatunbosun Oyintiloye, said the Executive Bill was read yesterday for the third time at a plenary presided over by Deputy Speaker Akintunde Adegboye.

    The bill was passed after a motion moved by House Leader Timothy Owoeye and seconded by the lawmaker representing Atakumosa East and West, Festus Komolafe.

    After the passage of the Bill, the Assembly directed its Clerk to forward it to Governor Rauf Aregbesola for his assent.

    It also urged the Clerk to work in conjunction with the House Leader to ensure the immediate return of the Bill to the Assembly within the stipulated period in the Constitution.

    Also, the “State of Osun Parks and Gardens Management Agency Bill 2017” was read for the first time by Owoeye and seconded by the member representing Ola Oluwa State Constituency, Ajibola Akinloye.

    The Bill, which seeks to create an agency that will administer, maintain and manage designated parks and gardens in the state, was supported by members who jointly called for its speedy passage.

    The Bill stipulates that the agency will be structured to beautify the state, promote afforestation in all ramifications, mitigate against the effect of climate change, generate income for the state and curb unemployment by engaging the youths.

    It was committed to the House Committees on Environment and Judiciary for second reading.

    The committees are expected report to the House on August 20.

  • Osun Assembly felicitates with Aregbesola

    The Osun Stat House of Assembly under the leadership of Speaker Najeem Salam has facilitated with Governor Rauf Aregbesola on his 61st birthday anniversary.

    In a statement yesterday in Osogbo, the state capital, by the Chairman of the House Committee on Information and Strategy, Olatunbosun Oyintiloye, the Assembly thanked God for the life of the governor which they described as a blessing to the state.

    The Assembly noted that the Aregbesola-led All Progressives Congress (APC) administration had brought unprecedented development to the state in the last seven and half years in all sectors of governance.

    These include: education, infrastructural development, security, economic re-engineering, rural and urban development, agriculture, youths and women empowerment, environment, healthcare delivery system and others.

    It said the unique style of Aregbesola’s leadership was key to why the Assembly honoured him with a life-membership award.

    The Assembly acknowledged that peaceful coexistent between the two separate arms of government was due to the positive approach the governor adopted.

    The House of Assembly wished the governor a long life and prosperity as well as a successful political endeavour as he concludes his two-term tenure later this year.

    It added that the legacy of Aregbesola would yield positive results in the coming months and years as well as improve the economy and governance.

    It described the courage and sagacity of the governor as impressive.

     

  • Killings inhuman, says Osun Assembly

    Osun House of Assembly Speaker Najeem Salam has said the killing of Catholic priests, other innocent Nigerians in Benue State and other troubled areas in the country was inhuman.

    In a statement issued by the Chairman House Committee on Information and Strategy, Olatunbosun Oyintiloye, the House spoke yesterday while receiving protesters from the Catholic Diocese of Osogbo, who stormed the Assembly.

    The Assembly sympathised with the Christians over the killing of two Catholic Priests, Rev. Fr. Joseph Gor and Fr. Felix Tyolaha as well as 17 others at St. Ignatius Catholic Church, Ukpor-Mbalom, Benue State last month by suspected herdsmen.

    It promised that their requests would be adequately looked into.

    The speaker, who received the statement in the presence of other lawmakers, promised the protesters that the House will urgently look into their requests and communicate it to the governor.

     

  • Osun Assembly, Lagos Speaker, Ashafa urge love, peace, tolerance

    Osun State House of Assembly under the leadership of the Speaker, Najeem Salam,  Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker Mudashiru Obasa and Lagos East Gbenga Ashafa have sent warm greetings to Christians over this year’s Easter celebration.

    The Osun State House assembly, in a statement by its Chairman, House Committee on Information and Strategy, Olatunbosun Oyintiloye, said the Assembly acknowledges that Easter season is a sacred one filled with God’s love, blessings and redemptive power.

    It congratulates Christians in the state, urging them to celebrate moderately and never forget the lessons as well as the reasons for the season, which is the sacrificial death and resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ.

    Obasa urged Nigerians to imbibe spirit of love, peace and tolerance as taught and practised by Jesus Christ during his lifetime.

    The Speaker, in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Musbau Rasak, said: “Jesus Christ preached and practised love, peace and tolerance during his lifetime and these are the qualities we should imbibe and practise to move this great country forward.”

    Ashafa, in a statement, said: “I join my Christian brothers and sisters in Lagos East Senatorial District and across Nigeria, as they commemorate the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

     

     

  • Dogara, APC, Osun Assembly greet Tinubu at 66

    HOUSE of Representatives Speaker Yakubu Dogara, the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Osun State House of Assembly yesterday felicitated with APC stalwart Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu on his 66th birthday anniversary.

    It will be marked with a Colloquium today in Lagos to be attended by President Muhammadu Buhari and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo among other dignitaries.

    Today’s will be the 10th anniversary of the Colloquium, which started in 2008

    Dogara, in a congratulatory message, described the former Lagos State governor as a dogged and rare breed politician, who mentors new generation of leaders for future challenges.

    He hailed Tinubu’s relentless commitment and sacrifice for democracy as well as his track records of service, mentoring and outstanding accomplishments.

    Dogara added: “You are indeed an astute politician, patriotic leader and democrat of high repute, who has the track records of mentoring and supporting upcoming leaders to accomplish their dreams.

    “I commend your courage in leadership and abiding faith in the ideals of democracy and the Nigerian project.

  • Osun Assembly promises law to help women farmers

    A bill supporting women farmers in Osun State is receiving the attention of the state House of Assembly. The bill sponsored by Women Advocate Research and Documentation Centre (WARDC) is to make a separate budget for women farmers in the state. The Chairman, House Committee on Agriculture, Hon. Ibrahim Gbadebo, made the disclosure while addressing women delegations, including members of the WARDC, who paid a visit to the legislative chamber.

    According to Gbadebo, it was necessary to support women because of their social and economic roles in the society. Giving the assurance that debate on the bill would soon commence, the lawmaker commended the WARDC, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and Strengthening Advocacy and Civil Engagement (SACE) for their intervention on issues affecting women, whom he described as vulnerable but active.

    The bill being supported by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and Strengthening Advocacy and civil Engagement (SACE) is said to have reached the committee stage and would soon be debated upon by the state lawmakers. In her response, the WARDC Programme Officer, Miss. Lola Fademi, said if the government’s policy on diversification of the economy would succeed, women as a group must not be ignored.
