Alumni decry fall in teaching quality

Alumni of Anglican Grammar School (Unity), Gbogan/Ode-Omu, Osun State,  are worried over decline in quality of teaching, infrastructure and students’ performance in public schools.

They said the standard of education in public schools had fallen, hence the need to salvage the situation.

Speaking at the 40th reunion of 1985 set of the old students, the Chairman of the Planning Committee, Pastor Wale Adeleke, said the conditions of public schools nationwide needed urgent attention.

Speaking about the reunion, he said it was the culmination of a decade-long effort to bring classmates together, describing the event as joyful and sobering.

The Executive Secretary of Senior Secondary Education Board, Mrs Hannah Kolawole, praised the school’s four decades of contributing to national development.

“This gathering is more than a celebration of time. It is a celebration of legacy, of nurturing minds, shaping character and producing men and women who have made positive contributions to the society.”

Vice Chairman of the Governing Board, Femi Yusuf, an accountant, listed the association’s continuous support for students.

“Our set has consistently paid WAEC and JAMB fees, sponsored tutorials and even placed Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English teachers on our payroll. These actions are our ways of bridging the gaps left by the government.”

  • Vote wisely, aspirant urges Osun voters

Vote wisely, aspirant urges Osun voters

Osun State governorship aspirant on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Group Chairman of Mutual Benefits Assurance Plc, Dr. Akin Ogunbiyi, has urged voters to vote wisely.

Speaking while meeting with stakeholders in Osogbo, he queried those who waste their electoral investment.

He said: “A leader’s credentials should definitely include verifiable, balanced behavioural traits, track record of people-oriented achievements, and unwavering commitment to genuine service delivery. Governance must produce meaningful, value-adding results that effectively meet the needs and aspirations of the people.

“A true leader must be compassionate and courageous. He must genuinely empower citizens and foster personal development, while also consistently achieving success and building on it.”

The APC aspirant queried: “Why would anyone support a leader whose stock-in-trade is playing to the gallery to gain cheap popularity? A leader who fails to uplift disadvantaged rural communities, who ignores deepening poverty and daily struggles of ordinary citizens, and who chooses to focus on trivial, attention-seeking matters rather than addressing the real challenges confronting the people. Such leadership offers no vision, no empathy, and no meaningful progress.”

Ogunbiyi questioned why citizens would not thoroughly scrutinize the trajectory and character of those seeking public offices.

He said, “We should ask ourselves the following questions: Does the candidate genuinely listen to sound ideas and diverse perspectives? Does he demonstrate a commitment to growing his knowledge, deepening his expertise, and sharpening his wisdom? Is he even concerned with meaningful innovation and true creativity?”

Dr. Ogunbiyi said he is consistently driven by the desire for empirical creativity. He explained that he adopts practical and relevant strategies to develop and sustain people-centred initiatives. He also noted that many of his bold interventions are already yielding significant benefits—not only in Nigeria but also in Liberia, the Niger Republic, Europe, and the United States. “My team and I are constantly delivering value, enhancing value, and creating greater value through discipline, determination, and empirical creativity,” he stated.

Speaking about his state of birth, Dr. Ogunbiyi emphasized that, “From the way things stand today, Osun State must urgently and genuinely pursue a rebirth.”

He stressed that governance in the state must put an immediate end to the crippling consequences of Cost of Inaction (COI). He then posed critical questions: “By all standards, is Osun State truly productive and competitive? Is the state self-sustaining? Can it survive without support from Abuja? And why has no government meaningfully ‘exploited’ Osun State’s vast and diverse agricultural as well as industrial potentials?

“Do you know that entrepreneurs like myself, working with minimal support—are already establishing farm resorts as new gateways for economic opportunities? Where do we see a government-backed Adire Exhibition Centre or a dedicated marketplace that promotes indigenous creativity and culture?

“If given the opportunity to govern Osun State, my full attention would be devoted to its transformation, with a focus on providing basic needs for both rural and urban populations through empowerment initiatives.” Dr. Ogunbiyi stated.

On his plans for the state, Ogunbiyi said, “l will pursue a policy of functional education and healthcare. Greater emphasis will be laid on education and health care services, because the two remain the bedrock of sustainable human development.

“We will invest on these two sectors to ensure sound minds, healthy and wealthy citizenry. We will also create jobs for our teeming but now largely idle youths. We will also do this by creating an enabling environment to make Osun State an investment-friendly state. If elected governor, l will also initiate and sustain an agricultural revolution in the state by utilising our vast arable land, not only to attain food security, but to generate huge revenue from the sector. We will make soft loans available for small scale farmers to produce food and crops and by so doing, provide jobs for many Osun youths.”

He continued: “We will unleash our energies and resources to boost industrialisation in the state by maximizing the benefits of our vast mineral resources – gold, kaoline, iron ore, talc, columbite and other mineral resources located in different parts of the state.

“We will intensify the mining of these deposits at a commercial level that will be beneficial to the state. We won’t play politics with such revenue -yielding ventures or enter into deals that will short-change the state.

“We will also assist artisans, women groups and youths through skill acquisition and soft loans to enable them to be self-sustaining and become employers of labour.”

Highlighting his plans to boost the tourism potentials of the state, Ogunbiyi said, “Osun State is one huge tourist site and such centres we have include Osogbo grove, Erin ljesha waterfall and the annual Olojo festival in lle-lfe, among others.

“We will also pursue our tourism sector development by upgrading facilities at such sites and ensuring more private partnership, aimed at boosting revenue.”

He further promised that creating landmark legacies of progress would be central to shaping and defining his core values.

  • When protectors turn aggressors

    When protectors turn aggressors

Residents of Akinlalu community in Ife North council area of Osun State are crying for justice over the killing of at least three of their members and injury of many others by operatives of Amotekun Corps in the state. Amotekun is the local security outfit raised by governments of South-west states to foster security at the grassroots in complement to operations of the Nigeria Police.

Akinlalu residents said an unprovoked attack on their community by Amotekun personnel 30th September resulted in four fatalities, with eight others – mostly women and youths – severely injured. Among those killed were three children of the Aro of Akinlalu, Chief Kamorudeen Oyebamiji – two from his younger wife and one from the elder. “Hooded Amotekun corps killed my three children in a single day,” he was reported lamenting. Community ruler, Alakinlalu of Akinlalu, Oba Oluwabusola Oloyede, demanded justice for the slain and denied claims by Amotekun that persons killed were bandits. According to him, it was innocent residents attacked at the market square. He implored community youths to stay calm and trust in government’s ability to bring erring corpsmen to justice.

The Osun Amotekun had in a statement claimed its operatives acted in self-defence after being ambushed by hoodlums, and that the encounter left three people suspected to be hoodlums dead. “Our men were ambushed while attempting to retrieve two rifles forcibly taken from them during an earlier confrontation with suspected thieves. In the exchange of gunfire that followed, three of the attackers were neutralised,” its statement read in part.

But community members insisted it was wild cat aggression perpetrated by corpsmen suspected to be under the influence of drugs. Akinlalu Youth Leader, Musbau Adeboye, said: “We heard there was theft of farm produce at Abaoba, a village under Akinlalu. Amotekun men went there and arrested suspects. Later, we learnt two rifles were seized from them by the sons of a retired soldier. The next day, they returned heavily armed and started shooting indiscriminately. By the time I arrived, it was a gory sight. The whole community looked like a slaughter slab.”

Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke expressed shock over the violence and said he had ordered full-scale probe. “This matter is being investigated and any infraction will be dealt with within the context of the law,” he said in a statement by his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed.

The police said they would ensure those involved in the mayhem were apprehended and prosecuted. Last week, police personnel stormed Amotekun Corps’ operational bases in Oke-fia, Osogbo, and Ife Central division in Ile-Ife where they arrested a number of corpsmen and sealed off the facilities.

The Akinlalu incident raises the red flag again about allowing secondary security outfits to bear lethal arms without worsening the challenge of misuse.

  • Communal clash looms over expansionist agenda

Communal clash looms over expansionist agenda

Tension is brewing in Bembe town, Ayedade Local Government Area of Osun State, over a move to annex the community to Ikire town in Irewole Council.

A petition by the Traditional Head of Bembe, Abas Omojare, Chief Oderemi Kazeem, Adewuyi Okunlade and Gafaru Alansi, through their counsel, Zakariyau Apo, addressed to the Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG), Zone XI, raised concern over the threat by some individuals from Ikire town to annex their territory to another local government.

The copy of the petition received at the Police zone XI, which was made available to The Nation, said their progenitors were the original landowners of Bembe community, who had controlled the territory from time immemorial in maintaining peace, order and development.

“However, sometime in the past, certain portions of land at Bembe were graciously partitioned and granted to the forefathers of one Maita and others, who hailed originally from Ikire, Osun State, based on tenancy and permissive occupation.

“The said partition was never a grant of ownership, but merely for occupation, farming and residential purposes, and the grantees were expected to respect the over lordship of our clients’ family and community as the customary landowners.”

The petitioners, however, alleged that “in recent times, one Maita, together with his cohorts, has begun to challenge the authority of our clients and the traditional institution at Bembe. They have mobilised and recruited other indigenes of Ikire living in Bembe, with the deliberate intention of undermining peace, security and customary control of our clients and the entire Bembe community.

“They have continued to make inciting and provocative statements, claiming ownership of Bembe land and issuing threats to drive away the lawful and indigenous people of the community.”

They lamented that the clandestine moves were disrupting peace, intimidating ‘Baale’ and traditional council, and causing communal unrest between Ikire indigenes and people of Bembe.

“This reckless behaviour has already sparked tension in the community, and if not urgently checked, it may degenerate into loss of lives and destruction of property in Bembe.

The activities of these people are in defiance of constituted authority, and amount to a deliberate attempt to create chaos, breakdown of law and order and communal violence between indigenous landowners of Bembe and Ikire migrants living therein.”

They warned that “if urgent steps are not taken by your (AIG) good office to call these suspects to order, the situation in Bembe may escalate into a full-blown communal clash.”

Communal clash looms over expansionist agenda of Osun LGA

Tension is rising in Bembe, a community in Ayedade Local Government Area of Osun State, following alleged moves to annex the town to Ikire in neighbouring Irewole Local Government Area.

The traditional head of Bembe, Chief Abas Omojare, alongside community leaders Chief Oderemi Kazeem, Adewuyi Okunlade, and Gafaru Alansi, raised the alarm in a petition through their counsel, Barrister Zakariyau Apo, addressed to the Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG), Zone XI.

The petition, a copy of which was made available to The Nation, accused some individuals from Ikire of making attempts to incorporate Bembe into their town, describing the move as illegal and provocative.

According to the petitioners, their forefathers are the original landowners of Bembe and have peacefully managed the community “from time immemorial.”

They explained that portions of land in Bembe were, in the past, granted to the ancestors of one Maita and other settlers from Ikire for farming and residential purposes on tenancy and permissive occupation terms—not ownership.

“The said partition was never a grant of ownership but merely for occupation, farming, and residential purposes. The grantees were expected to respect the overlordship of our clients’ family and community as the customary landowners,” the petition read.

However, the petitioners alleged that in recent times, Maita and his associates have begun challenging the authority of Bembe’s traditional rulers, recruiting Ikire indigenes living in Bembe to undermine the community’s peace and leadership.

“They have made inciting and provocative statements, claiming ownership of Bembe land and issuing threats to drive away the lawful and indigenous people of the community,” the petition added.

The petitioners lamented that the development has created tension, disrupted peace, and instilled fear among residents.

“This reckless behaviour has already sparked tension in the community, and if not urgently checked, it may degenerate into loss of lives and destruction of property in Bembe,” they warned.

They urged the AIG to intervene swiftly and call the suspects in order to prevent a potential communal clash between indigenes of Bembe and settlers from Ikire.
