  • The demands of office have robbed me of leisure…Osun Tourism and Culture Commissioner Sikiru Ayedun

The demands of office have robbed me of leisure…Osun Tourism and Culture Commissioner Sikiru Ayedun

Time was 7am on a Tuesday morning, and Sikiru Ayedun, the Commissioner for Tourism and Culture in Osun State, was already busy attending to visitors who started arriving at his house early in the day. Though he was already dressed and ready to leave for office, as a leader, he had to attend to them and try as much as possible to meet some of their demands. That done with, he dashed off to his office at state secretariat in Abere area of Osogbo, the state capital.

The scene at the office was not too different from the early morning scene at home, as other visitors were waiting for him. But Ayedun is unperturbed. He believes it is a call to duty. Raised in a blue-blood setting, Ayedun was saddled with administrative responsibilities early in life.

He said: “I am from the Giesi ruling house in Ile-Ife. You know, for some of us who grew up in a royal house, there were certain trainings you must have; things that would be bestowed on you not just for your immediate development, but for your future. Because it is believed that one way or the other, you may attain the position of leadership someday. You receive training on relationship, how to settle matters, how to deal with issues generally and also seeing yourself as a man of exemplary character.”

Armed with the training, it was not a surprise that Ayedun made tremendous success of his marine and transport business. In the same vein, the acumen he brought to bear on the office when he was eventually appointed the commissioner for tourism and culture in Osun State has begun to yield noticeable result in the sector.

He said: “We have brought a lot of changes, and I will tell you today that we have changed the face of festivals in the state. In all the nooks and crannies of the state, festivals are now more of carnival than just a parlour party that they used to be. We are also giving more exposure to our culture and traditions by making them more attractive to people all over the world.

“Aside that, all our tourists’ sites are being turned around to make them attractive for increased patronage. I can tell you that this is already yielding result.

“If you get to Olumerin now, the minimum number of visitors you can see there is between 50 and 100. Various clubs and associations now come to Osun to hold their programmes because of the new things that we have put in place. These are the kind of things we are trying to promote. We believe that whosoever comes to Osun would have to spend some money. By doing that, such person is contributing to the economy of the state.

“When we talk about foreign tourists, what we expect from you is a minimum of a thousand dollars. Imagine if we have between 40 and 50 thousand tourists who spend a thousand dollars every month, then a huge sum of money would have been injected into our economy,” Ayedun noted.

While he loves every bit of what he is doing with tourism and culture in Osun State, he is somehow unhappy that he has virtually lost his privacy. “People now pry into what you do every day. It also restricts some aspects of your social life. For example, if it were in my private office, whatever money I spend, nobody pries into it. But now, for you to have the money to spend is an issue because everybody believes that you are wasting whatever public fund that you spend,

“Also, this responsibility is real service that takes you away from your family most of the time. Even relating socially is an issue. Things are no longer the same as when you were not a public office holder. In those days, you could do anything and get away with it because nobody cares. But anything you do or say now becomes instant news. So, you have to be very careful about what you do.”

However, in his private capacity, the success in public office has come at a cost, denying him of his time and relaxation.

He said: “Well, relaxation is quite different. You might say because I’ve not gone to the office, I am relaxing. But it is not so. Leisure hours are the hours that will take you out of the official responsibility. It is supposed to take you to a place where you can cool your nerves.

“But while you are in office, even when you wish to relax, you cannot do it because your attention is always needed in one way or the other. For instance, I am a lover of football. I am a man who wants a good environment to relax. But the schedule and responsibility of office will not permit me.”

To cope with the demands of his office, the marine expert has abandoned his suit and tie for traditional dresses. “I’m a cultural man, and inasmuch as I’m promoting Yoruba tradition, religion and culture, it will be odd for me to put on suit. I wear traditional attires 24/7 now. It was when I was in my private business that I last wore a suit. I have had to drop it for traditional outfits since I assumed this office. All my suits are now wasting away in my wardrobe.”

  • Group sponsors holiday classes in Osun

As part of its contribution to Governor Rauf Aregbesola’s efforts to boost education in Osun State, a socio-political group – Itesiwaju Movement, has organised free holiday coaching classes for students of Irepodun and Orolu Local Government areas of the state.

The programme, tagged Itesiwaju Summer School (ISS), which started on Monday, August 5, has been described as unprecedented in the area.

Sponsored by an alumnus of Ilobu Secondary Commercial Grammar school, Ilobu, headquarters of Irepodun Local Government, Dr Oluwole Alabi, who is now a Consultant Gynaecologist, the summer school has engaged more than 1000 pupils in the councils.

It is not only the pupils that are enjoying the event. Chairman of the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT), Irepodun Local Government chapter, Mr. Taofeek Musa, who is also the Chairman of the Organising Committee, said even teachers and traders are happy about the additional earnings they are getting.

“The allowances to be earned by the 26 of us will also contribute significantly to the economy of this environment. There are also food vendors who have since been coming to trade at the centre as part of its multiplied effects,” he said.

The Principal of Ansar-ud-Deen Grammar School, venue of the coaching, Mr. Yekeen Ibraheem, said the turnout of the students at the centre was surprisingly massive.

“I was transferred here from Muslim Grammar School in Osogbo and so I cannot say this initiative is new, but the way it has been endorsed by both students and teachers is highly unprecedented.

“I doubted the students’ participation when we were informed but right from the first day the classes started I was marveled at the turnout,” Mr. Ibraheem stated.

Addressing the pupils when he visited, Dr. Alabi said the summer school was inspired by Aregbesola’s efforts to restore the glory of education in the state. He urged them to be focused.

“If you are focused we can have world leaders among you here. All of us that you see here never attended a private school; we were trained in public schools and our parents made huge contributions by guiding our steps. If you listen to instructions and you read very well the sky is the beginning of your limit,” he advised.

  • Offa rerun: we’re disappointed, says Osun APC

Offa rerun: we’re disappointed, says Osun APC

The Osun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has expressed disappointment that the results of the last Saturday’s rerun in Offa Local Government of Kwara State by the State Independent Electoral Commission (KWSIEC).

In a statement by its Directorate of Communication and Strategy, the party urged Offa residents to reject the results in which the Peoples Democratic Party candidate was declared the winner.

The APC described KWSIEC’s action as “ominous of the kind of criminal complicity in electoral brigandage which the PDP plans to deploy throughout the country to stay in power against the will of the people”.

It added: “We, in the APC, are worried that such daylight robbery is still possible, despite the assurances that the electoral body would act with fairness and credibility in the coming elections. But from what happened in Offa, it would appear that the electoral body is least prepared to resist the PDP chicanery and blatant disregard for democratic process to perpetuate itself in power.

“If KWSIEC allows itself, at this stage, to become compromised, then the series of future elections in some states would be as good as given to the PDP at the local and state levels, where they are in control.

“At least, that is the message from Offa by the PDP, in collaboration with KWSIEC. We should warn at this stage that this kind of brigandage would be a diabolical receipt for anarchy, the type that could have the consequences of which the world has been predicting for Nigeria.”

The party urged good-spirited Nigerians to prevail on the PDP and KWSIEC not to set Kwara State ablaze through senseless electoral fraud.

  • Osun Osogbo: Goldberg thrills visitors

    Osun Osogbo: Goldberg thrills visitors

This year’s edition of the Osun Osogbo Festival may have come and gone, but the “golden” moments would remain indelible in the minds of visitors for years to come.

The sign that visitors’ experiences in this year’s edition of the Osun Osogbo festival would be “golden” was imminent the moment Goldberg signed the dotted line as one of the event’s major sponsors.

Libation is an age-long tradition in which drink is poured on the ground to appease certain deities. In obeisance to the extant culture, Goldberg “libated”, as its sponsorship of the event connoted dropping jots of its liquid gold in the Osun River. The ricochet effect was resplendent as Goldberg ensured that the 2013 Osun Osogbo Festival ambience turned “golden”, while the event lasted.

It may not be out of place if Gbogan Road is renamed Goldberg Road, albeit temporarily, for that is where the Goldberg Beer Village is. For 21 days, culture and tradition enthusiasts, tourists, revellers and visitors trooped to the Goldberg Beer Village to relish bottles of Goldberg Beer.

What the visitors to the beer village got in return was the best of fun and excitement in an atmosphere of conviviality. Many comic and musical acts thrilled the crowd and ensured that there was no dull moment.

Speaking on Goldberg’s sponsorship of the 2013 Osun Osogbo Festival, Mr. Mfon Bassey, Brand Manager – Goldberg, Nigerian Breweries Plc. said: “The Osun Osogbo Festival is one of the most prominent cultural festivals in Nigeria. As a premium lager beer, Goldberg is proud to be associated with a festival of iconic status. Our association with the festival reflects our commitment to upholding the tenets of a prominent Nigerian tradition and ensuring that it does not go into extinction. That’s why Goldberg came on board as a major sponsor.”

On why the brand set up the Goldberg Beer Village, Mr. Bassey said: “The Goldberg Beer Village served various purposes. As you well know, the Osun Osogbo festival attracted tourists from Nigeria and outside the country. The Goldberg Beer Village served as a relaxation point for them. We also used the Goldberg Beer Village as an avenue for local acts to showcase their various talents. We had musical acts and deft dancers thrilling the crowd. So the consumers got more value for their money. Just for buying bottles of Goldberg, they were treated to lively music and various forms of entertainment.”

Goldberg’s sponsorship of the 2013 edition of the Osun Osogbo Festival also coincided with the first visit of the Executive Governor of Osun State to the grand finale procession, since he was sworn in in 2010.

In his speech at the festival, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola said: “We gather again to savour the inexhaustible economic, spiritual and sociological benefits that the festival of this period of the year make possible. Ladies and gentlemen, in celebrating this prominent festival, we must not forget what it connotes. We must continue to imbibe and deepen the non-material values of this socio-cultural engagement. Courage, sacrifice, selflessness, brotherliness, hope and faithfulness remain some of the major values undergirding the celebration of the Osun Osogbo Festival.”

The Osun Osogbo Festival ended on Friday, August 23. Goldberg, a major sponsor of the festival, is a premium lager beer manufactured by Nigerian Breweries.

  • OAUTHC, Osun negotiate unpaid taxes

The management of the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital Complex (OAUTHC), Ile-Ife, has started negotiating with the Osun State Internal Revenue Service on how to settle the hospital’s N3.1 billion tax arrears.

As a result of this, the administrative block of the hospital, which was earlier seal by the revenue service, has been re-opened.

It was gathered that the Chief Medical Director (CMD) of the institution, Prof. Sanya Adejuyigbe, yesterday led the hospital’s negotiation team.

It was learnt that at a meeting, which lasted for several hours, the hospital asked for 14 days to verify the claim that it owes N3.1 billion taxes.

Adejuyigbe was said to have pledged to pay the arrears before leaving office in November.

The Osun State government has threatened to publish the names of tax defaulters.

  • Osun seals OAUTHC over unpaid taxes

Osun seals OAUTHC over unpaid taxes

The Osun State Internal Revenue Service has sealed the Administrative Complex of the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital Complex (OAUTHC), Ile-Ife, over unpaid Pay-As-You-Earn (PAYE) taxes running into over N3.1 billion.

The government was granted an order to seal the complex by an Osogbo High Court after the expiration of a seven-day ultimatum given to the hospital’s management to pay up.

It was learnt that OAUTHC has not remitted taxes deducted from its staff to the state in six years, from 2006 to 2011.

The Chief Medical Director (CMD), Prof. Sanya Adejuyigbe, and other management staff could not access their offices yesterday when The Nation visited the hospital.

Workers, including the CMD, were seen in groups discussing the matter.

Prof. Adejuyigbe said: “Since the new tax regime was introduced in 2005, the management is yet to implement it. We are using the old tax rate for our workers. Many of the staff affected by the development have retired from service. The new contributory pension scheme makes the unpaid tax to be bogus.

“We urge the government to give us more time to reconcile the old tax rate with the new deduction. We cannot afford to pay the outstanding once. We should be allowed to spread the payment over eight years. All what we generate cannot settle the outstanding amount. The money is not available. We are hoping to put in place a tax committee to open up dialogue with the government and resolve the matter.”
