Osun: Aregbesola floors Omisore at tribunal

OTUnba Iyiola Omisore, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate in the August 9, 2014 governorship election  in Osun State yesterday lost the plot to unseat the winner of that election, Governor Rauf Aregbesola.

The  State Election Petition Tribunal  struck out Omisore’s petition by  which he sought to have himself declared winner.

The tribunal said the evidence presented before it by the petitioner was, at best, a hearsay.

The tribunal chairman, Justice Elizabeth Ikpejime, in her eight-hour judgment affirmed Aregbesola’s victory  and declared that the petitioner and his party, the PDP, failed to prove their case convincingly that the election was characterized by fraud, irregularities, harassment and intimidation of voters on the day of election.

The petitioners, she pointed out, even showed no  proof of how voters were chased away from voting centres as they had alleged, and  their allegation of multiple voting  was unsubstantiated.

She said they could not cite a single case of multiple voting  during the cross examination of their witnesses.

On the petitioners’ allegation  of the use  of under aged persons  by the APC to perpetrate electoral fraud, Justice Ikpejime said  no one  was mentioned as an under aged person before the tribunal.

The tribunal  referred to  the results of the election in  17 local government areas of the state – Ayedaade, Atakumosa East, Atakumosa West, Boripe, Ede North, Ede South, Ejigbo, Ifelodun, Ilesa East, Ilesa West, Irepodun, Irewole, Iwo, Obokun, Olaoluwa, Olorunda, Oriade and Osogbo – which the petitioners wanted to be voided.

It said although the petitioners brought 43 witnesses to push their case the tribunal,  after  a thorough scrutiny  petitioners’ prayers  found their evidence lacking  merit.

Similarly  dismissed as untrue was the claim by the petitioners that duplicate copies of Forms EC8A, EC8B, EC8C and EC8D used during the election  were not signed and stamped.

Justice Ikpejime  then struck out the petition and upheld the declaration of Aregbesola by the INEC as winner of the poll with 394,688 votes against Omisore’s 292,747 votes.

The court room was filled to the brim by  chieftains of  the PDP and APC while security in and around the premises was tight.

The  proceeding  commenced at 9. 00 am and ended at about 5.00 pm.

As news of the judgment spread,  residents of Osogbo, the state capital, trooped out in their thousands  in jubilation.

Not even the downpour  that followed could stop them.

Major streets, including  Oke-fia, Olaiya Junction, Gbongan Road, Oja-Oba, Ayetoro and other parts of the town, were jampacked by  people jubilating over the court’s  verdict.

They were soon joined by Governor Aregbesola  and other chieftains of the party in a victory parade round the town.

  • The matter of Osun Poly registrar

SIR: It has become very necessary for me to lend my voice to the current unwarranted controversy trailing the appointment of the Registrar of Osun State Polytechnic, Iree.

As an alumnus, I watched, with keen interest, the process of the appointment of the registrar and I have taken time off to weigh the contending issues.

I realised that the Governing Council of the Polytechnic stands on the side of the truth and integrity on the matter. The Council acted in the best interest of maintaining the positive image of the Polytechnic by appointing a man of integrity, knowledge and experience to the post.

Therefore, there is need to put an end to this needless controversy. From my independent findings, I realised that the process of the appointment followed the due process and that there is no dispute over the certificate of the officer who is a product of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife.

The new registrar possesses a Second Class Upper Degree in English Language in 1989 from OAU, Ile-Ife. He is also a member of many professional bodies such as Nigerian Institute of Management and

Chartered Institute of Arbitrators of Nigeria.

It is embarrassing to read in the newspapers the man was not qualified to hold the position.

It is pertinent to note that Osun State is lucky to have a meticulous governor, Rauf Aregbesola who is always painstaking in handling issues. The governor, who is a catalyst of change and an apostle of integrity would not open his eyes and allow corruption under his watch. I congratulate the Council, once again, for the courage to toe the path of honour despite intimidations by some cabals.

I appeal to those faceless individuals sponsoring unjustified write-ups in the newspapers against the registrar to desist and allow peace to reign at OSPOLY so that those of us carrying the certificates of the polytechnic would not be subjected to further ridicule in our places of work.

  • Political delinquency in Osun

SIR: A dangerous trend is taking shape in the politics being played by the Peoples Democratic Party in Osun State. Or, how else does one describe a situation, where a political party, seeking to be an alternative in the quest for power in a state takes hooliganism to the next level?

As a party in power from 2003 to 2010, the PDP demonstrated the worst form of violence on the then hapless people of Osun. Even when as at that time, there was no serious opposition to its lacklustre rule, violence was its second name as any mass gathering of the party always ended in violence, with death and broken limbs in trail.

This was why the people felt the need for change, culminating into their voting overwhelmingly for Ogbeni Rauf Adesoji Aregbesola of then Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN. This was unfortunately, an election that was marred with lurid violence and not allowed to count, which led to a very prolonged legal battle before his victory was restored at the courts.

Why must winning an election in a democratic dispensation be a do-or-die affair even when it’s obvious that you are not wanted, based on your sordid records of criminality and ineptitude? As if the above aren’t bad enough, you now go on to accuse the other party or person of doing or planning to do what you are known for, and that which you are even intending to do.

A typical and most recent example of this kind of behaviour is the unfortunate incident at the High Court sitting of the Election Petitions Tribunal in Osogbo, on Friday January 23. The camp of the candidate of the PDP in the August 9, 2014 governorship election, Senator Iyiola Omisore, had raised an alarm that the state government was planning to make use of the State Boys to disrupt the tribunal’s proceedings of the next day. The government denounced the allegation as baseless.

Again, it was ridiculous, but not surprising that on the day the tribunal was meant to take final statements of both petitioners and respondents, known thugs of the PDP stormed the venue to foment trouble and to even celebrate what they regarded as victory, even when there was no judgment!

The poser on the lips of well-meaning Nigerians is: when would the camp of Omisore learn to behave honourably and desist from political shenanigans? Somebody ought to tell them the home truth that incumbent governor Rauf Aregbesola is, today, by popular will of the people of Osun and through the wish of the Almighty, a statesman, who will never engage in indecent acts.

The personality lecture organised by the National Association of Osun State Students (NAOSS) brought high profile dignitaries to the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) last week.

The lecture with the theme: Intellectualism, moralism and humanism: Focus on Prof Rasaq Deremi Abubakre was attended by the Secretary to the Osun State Government, Alhaji Moshood Adeoti, who represented Governor Rauf Aregebsola, Grand Qadi, Kwara State Shariah Court Appeal, Justice S.O. The guest lecturer, Dr Abdulraheem Hamzah, said meeting the honoree at Markaz, an Arabic institution founded by the popular Islamic preacher, Sheikh Adam Abdullah Al-Ilory, was a blessing to him. He said although Abubakre experienced a delay in education but the setback turned out to be blessing for him.

Hamza described Abubakre as a man of impeccable character, moral integrity and decent manager of men, money and material.  He said the honoree’s integrity could not be questioned, saying Abubakre remained one of the incorruptible Nigerians alive.

Justice Mohammed, who described the honoree as his teacher, said: “I have learnt from my teacher to be honest, humble and hardworking and tolerate no nonsense. The only thing that makes me hate my teacher is that, he does not give his students bonus mark.” This remark attracted laughter from the audience.

Prof Ijaya said the event was recognition of the honoree’s integrity and contribution to the development of the nation.

The event also featured the launch of the association’s magazine and presentation of award to the honoree for his scholarly works and contribution to development of Iwo town in Osun State.

  • Aregbesola: APC won’t leave any seat for PDP in Osun

Aregbesola: APC won’t leave any seat for PDP in Osun

•Governor leads APC candidates to communities

Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola has said the All Progressives Congress (APC) will not concede any seat to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in this month’s State and National Assembly elections, as it did in 2011.

The governor spoke at the weekend in Iwo Federal Constituency at the beginning of his campaigns for APC candidates.

The campaign tour took Aregbesola to Iwo, Ola Oluwa and Ayedire local governments areas.

He told the huge crowds at Iwo Ogbagba, Telemu Ile Ogbo and Oluponna that the Yoruba never had anything in common with anti-progressive parties.

Aregbesola said the Yoruba had always pitched their tents with the progressives since the First Republic.

The governor noted that 16 years under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Nigeria had not led to national progress but retrogression.

He urged the electorate in the local government areas and other parts of the state to vote for APC candidates.

Aregbesola also urged the residents of Osun West l Senatorial District to vote for Isiaka Adeleke (Senate) and Abdulgahafar Amere (House of Representatives).

The governor canvassed votes for House of Assembly candidates – Akinloye Ajibola, for Ola Oluwa; Leke Ogunshola, for Aiyedire and Abdulahi Gbadebo, for Iwo  – for effective representation and good governance.

He stressed that APC’s victory in last August 9 governorship election in the state would be boosted when the party wins all the seats in the National Assembly’s poll.

Aregbesola urged the people to vote massively for APC presidential candidate, General Muhammadu Buhari, on February 14.

The governor noted that the change Nigerians were clamouring for could only be achieved when a progressives’ party is in power.

He said: “I want to use this opportunity to thank you for standing behind us during the last August 9 governorship election.

“We have again come back to solicit your support in ensuring that we maintain a clean slate in the presidential and legislative elections.

“We are confident that with all we have done in the last four years, which to us is just a tip of the iceberg, contrary to insinuations that work has stopped, the state will begin to witness the completion of ongoing projects and the introduction of new ones, where necessary.

“The state and the party will achieve more, if we have quality representations in our House of Assembly and the Houses of Representatives and the Senate.

“…We implore you, who have not collected your Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) to do so.”

On the campaign tour with Aregbesola were: Adeleke, Amere; the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Alhaji Moshood Adeoti; former Commissioner for Women Affairs, Mrs. Mofolake Adegboyega and the Director, Bureau of Communication and Strategy, Mr. Semiu Okanlawon.

  • Osun’ ll Be Aggressive On IGR – COS

Government of the State of Osun has said it has  no other option than to ensure that the issues of Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) is aggressively driven by all revenue generating agencies of government to cater for the dwindling federal allocation to the state.

Chief of Staff to Governor Rauf Aregbesola, Mr Gboyega Oyetola, stated this while appearing before the House of Assembly Committee on Finance and Appropriation to defend the 2015 budget estimate for the Governor’s Office.

He said the Office of the Governor has proposed to raise N3,025,000,000 as revenue through tender fees, registration of contractors, capital receipts and from other sources within the year.

Oyetola presented a budget of N18,645,514,610 as expenditure for the year with N6,925,000,000 as recurrent expenditure and N11,720,514,610 as proposed capital expenditure.

He said N1,159,000,000 is expected to be expended on salaries, allowances and other remunerations of career officers and political office holders in the Office of the Governor.

“The budget size for the year represents a 36.13 percent reduction in the size of the budget for year 2014,” he explained.

Commending the state parliament for its understanding over the financial position of the state and its effects on the funding of all arms of government, he said the state and the entire country have never had it so bad.

He then noted that the need to scale down the size of the budget to “a realistic level” had been dictated by the reality of the current financial situation of the state.

According to him, the situation at which the country is, requires all true lover of democracy to join hands in ensuring the emergence of the much-desired era of development and growth of the country after years of stagnation in all facets of life.

He however urged the Assembly to give usual accelerated consideration and passage to the budget to lay the required foundation for the accomplishment of all the plans and programmes of the present administration in the state.

The Chairman, House Committee on Finance and Appropriation, Honourable Kamil Oyedele, promised that the House would give the budget critical and accelerated consideration and passage.

  • Nigerians, Osun Civil Societies Rejects N10 Fuel Pump Price Reduction

Reactions have continued to trail the reduction of the pump price of petroleum by the Federal Government from N97 to N87.

Many Nigerians saw the N10 reduction as political, as it was meant to canvass support for the re-election of President Goodluck Jonathan, saying that it was not done with genuine intensions.

Nigerians argued that if the reduction was done with the aim of objectively reducing petroleum pump price in line with the crash of crude oil prices in the international markets, the Federal Government would have put the price at N45.

They added that President Jonathan would not wait till election period before reducing the petrol pump price.

Similarly, a coalition of civil society groups in the State of Osun has rejected the N10 reduction in the petroleum pump price, describing it as ridiculous and meagre.

The Osun Civil Societies Coalition (OCSC) stated that the N10 reduction does not reflect the fallen price of crude oil in the global market, adding the new N87 pump price was still arbitrary and fraudulent.

According to the OCSC, the President Jonathan-led Federal Government was being insensitive to Nigerians’ plight and taking the people for granted if it could “ridiculously” take away just N10 from the pump price of petrol.

Chairman of the OCSC, Comrade Biodun Agboola, in a press statement made available to the medium on Sunday in Osogbo, said N10 reduction was politically-motivated, as it is not commensurate with the fallen crude oil prices in the global market.

Agboola said; “When crude oil was $119 per barrel, the Federal Government increased the petroleum pump price to N110. However, it was reduced to N97 following massive protest against the unjust and arbitrary hike in the pump price of petrol in 2012.

“Now that crude oil is $49 per barrel in the international market, the expected pump price reduction should have been between N35 to N40.

“We however, wondered why the Federal Government delayed the reduction in the petroleum pump price till the election period, when the crude oil price had crashed for almost five months in the global market.”

Agboola maintained that the Federal Government was still defrauding Nigerians with the N87 fuel pump price, adding that the new price further pronounced the brazen corruption and bad governance in the country.

  • INEC Distributes 993, 459 PVCs In Osun

The headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in the Staten of Osun has said it has distributed 993,459 (70.65 per cent)  out of 1,406,147 permanent voters cards in the state.

The State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Dr Adekunle Ogunmola, who was just deployed to the state, spoke on Friday at his maiden press briefing, saying, 412,688 (29.35 per cent) of the cards were yet to be distributed.

He added that the distribution of the PVC would stop at the end of January, noting that the commission has extended the distribution of the cards to ward level to ensure that more people get it.

Ogunmola also stressed that Saturdays have now been included in the days for the distribution of PVCs, while the closing times have been extended.

The INEC boss also said the state office of the commission has so far received 2,133 Voter Card Readers, while the rest are yet to be deployed, saying, the commission would use the available ones to start training of officials that would work with them.

He said, 3,960 Plastic Ballot Boxes have so far been deployed to the state and were in the store of the commission.

Ogunmola added that the commission has started voters’ enlightment, while workshop would also be organised for all categories of people.

On allegation of bias against his predecessor, Ambassador Rufus Akeju, the REC described his predecessor as a man of integrity, but a victim of bad politics on the side of those castigating him.

Wondering why politicians would go extra mile to blame “such thorough bred diplomat” when they could not achieve their aims, he said, “it is unfortunate that the kind of politics we play in this country is quite dirty.

“He is a man of integrity, but he was misunderstood,” he said.

  • Committee to probe Osun violence coming

Committee to probe Osun violence coming

Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola has set up a committee to investigate the violence between Ipetumodu and Ashipa communities in Ife-North Local Government Area.

The communities engaged in a communal clash over a disputed land and  their market days. Four people were injured in the fracas.

Aregbesola spoke when he visited the communities.

He frowned at the  destruction of property in the towns.

The governor berated the communities for falling short of the ethos of ‘omoluabi’ that the state is promoting.

“We have all seen what crises and communal clash can bring, what we can gain is nothing but loss, agony, pain and the gnashing of teeth. We should now see reasons why we should not fight.

“If we are sure that we are not going to gain any development from it, why should we hurt ourselves?

“ I am happy that peace has returned to the two communities.

“I will now go back to set up a committee having seen the extent of damage.

“The committee will be given six weeks to come out with its findings and recommendations.”

The governor assured the communities that the February 14 elections, which the All Progressives Congress (APC) will win, will end unemployment.

He said government can only thrive in an atmosphere of peace, urging them to learn from what is happening in some parts of the North.

  • Parliamentary race hots up in Osun

Parliamentary race hots up in Osun

The political temperature in Osun State is changing. The All progressives Congress (APC) and the People Democratic Party (PDP) have kicked off campaigns for parliamentary elections. ADESOJI ADENIYI examines the contest for the Senate and the House of Representatives in the two major parties.

As next month’s general elections draw near, the two dominant political parties in Osun State – the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) – have put the crises trigged by their primaries behind them. They are gearing up for the general elections.

Even the ruling APC is not taking things for granted because of the changing political equation in the country. It is believed that the election will be different from that of  2011, when the defunct Action Congress (AC) swept all the three slots for the Senate, the nine seats in the House of Representatives and the 26 House of Assembly slots, leaving the PDP in the cold to manage its disgrace.

According to close observers, it was possible for the AC to achieve the feat because of the euphoria of the restoration of Rauf Aregbesola’s mandate at the Appeal Court, Ibadan, Oyo State. The 2010 victory at the Appeal Court was still fresh in the minds of the people.

Against this background, the people of Osun did not want to hear about the PDP. In voting for all the AC candidates for the 2011 general elections, the people said, “we voted for Aregbesola.” It is instructive that Osun was the only state in the Southwest that voted for the presidential candidate of the AC  Mr. Nuhu Ribadu.

Today, the equation has altered slightly.  Aregbesola found himself in a dilemma during the recent APC primaries. He was caught between two options: supporting the serving lawmakers’ bid to return to office or throwing the race open to new aspirants. Some of those aspiring to the positions were not happy when the governor eventually handed the tickets to the  incumbents. Some termed it imposition, while some accepted their fate.

Aregbesola was compelled to support the serving lawmakers, both in the state and the National Assembly, as part of his re-election strategy last year. The governor had worked  with the lawmakers to deliver on his promises to the people. The lawmakers supported the governor in their various constituencies by utilising their constituency allowances to provide democracy dividends to the peiople. It is believed that some of the water, road and other projects in all parts of the state were made possible through the support of the lawmakers. Part of the conditions given by the lawmakers to assist the governor was that they should be given the ticket to return to their seats through next month’s general elections.

Today, in spite of the landmark achievements of Aregbesola, the feeling towards the APC is not what it used to be in 2010. The implication is that  those contesting on the platform of the APC in some parts of the state may not have a smooth sail. Indeed, there is a glimmer of hope for the PDP candidates in the areas that may likely be affected.

The situation has been compounded by the fact that the same set of candidates received a similar treatment in the 2011 elections. For example, all the defunct ACN candidates who contested in their various constituencies alongside Aregbesola in 2007 general elections were allowed by ACN leaders  to recontest the 2011 polls. Curiously, the same set of lawmakers were still favoured at the recent primaries. Those not favoured by the development are threatening to rock the boat at the general elections.

They have vowed to ensure that the APC did not repeat the 2011 feat. While very few  aspirants have submitted themselves to party supremacy and wisdom of party leaders, a  majority of them are yet to come to terms with their inability to get the ticket. For instance, in Osun East Senatorial District, an APC aspirant, Sola Lawal, is dissatisfied with the victory of Senator Babajide Omoworare. This is in spite of the fact that the primary was in favour of Omoworare. The PDP candidate in this district, Chief Francis Fadahunsi, a retired Assistant Comptroller -General of the Nigeria Customs Service, may capitalise on this loophole to get the upper hand against his APC opponent. Interestingly, while Omoworare is from the Ife zone, which has  four council areas, Fadahunsi is from the Ijesha zone, which has six local governments within the district.

But Fadahunsi, from Obokun Local Government, could only sufficiently boast of support from Oriade and Obokun. Being an incumbent Senator, Omoworare has largely touched the lives of people in all the 10 council areas in the senatorial district.

Apart from this, Omoworare is favoured becuase the incumbent governor is from Ijesa zone of the Osun East and the people believe that the senatorial slot should not be given to the zone.

For Osun West, the former Minister of Youth Development, Senator Akinlabi Olasunkanmi, was unanimously adopted as the PDP  candidate. It was used to compensate the former minister because he failed to clinch the governorship ticket, which he contested with Senator Iyiola Omisore, who emerged the  candidate, but was defeated by Aregbesola in the August 9, 2014 election. Olasunkanmi would have to slug it out with the first civilian governor of the state, Senator Isiaka Adeleke of the APC.

Adeleke was defeated in 2011 by Senator Mudasiru Hussein. But, following his defection from the PDP to the APC, after a fight between him and Omisore a day to the PDP governorship primary, Adeleke has become formidable. He supported Aregbesola’s re-election. He delivered his constituency and beyond for the APC. This is in spite of the fact that his kinsman, the former Speaker of the House of Assembly, Hon, Adejare Bello, was the running mate to Omisore. He delivered Ede North, Ede South, Egbedore and Ejigbo for the APC in the governorship.

This was perhaps, the reason why he was favoured for the ticket, instead of Hussein and the former Chief of Staff to Oyinlola, as well as the chairman, Osun State Local Government Service Commission, Mr. Peter Babalola, who had defected long before him from the PDP to the APC. Babalola, who was popularly known as Peter Power, later changed his nickname to Peter Action when he defected to the defunct ACN.

But, he cannot stand up to Adeleke, who refers to himself as a giant. Adeleke’s chances are bright, despite the protest from Hussein, who believed he should not be sacrificed for the party. Adeleke has a large following from his former party, the PDP. He is counting on his generosity and popularity in local governments in the Osun West district.

In the Central District, cerebral Senator Sola Adeyeye, no doubt has paid his dues from the days of the Alliance for Democracy. He is a consistent progressive. As the Chairman of the Aregbesola Re-election Campaign Committee, he played a prominent role in working for the success of the party.

He facilitated the defection of Oyinlola, who was sacked as the PDP National secretary to the APC. Notable politicians in the APC are from his senatorial district, including former interim national chairman of the APC and former governor of the state, Chief Bisi Akande, Oyinlola and Chief Tunji Abolade. He has their support in the contest against a lesser known PDP  candidate, Dr. Daisi Aina. Aina is the Chairman of Regent Group of Companies.

For the House of Representatives, all incumbent APC lawmakers were returned, except for Atakumosa East/Atakumosa West that has its case pending.  Hon. Lasun Yussuf was returned for Osogbo/Olorunda/Irepodun/Orolu federal constituency and Hon. Yinka Ajayi for Ila/Ifedayo/Boluwaduro federal constituency. Hon. Femi Fakeye made Egbedore/Ejigbo/Ede North/Ede South Federal Constituency.

Hon. Gafar Amere was also returned for Iwo/Ola-Oluwa/Ayedire Constituency. For Irewole/Ayedire/Isokan Federal Constituency, Hon. Mrs. Ayo Omidiran got the ticket. Rotimi Makinde got the ticket for Ife Central/Ife East/Ife North/Ife South and Area Office.

For IlesaEast/Ilesa West, it is Hon. Ajibola Famurewa and Obokun/Oriade for Nathaniel Agunbiade.

For the PDP, the issue of consensus was popularised during its primaries, except in some areas like Iwo Ola-Ouwa/Ayediire Federal Constituency where two aspirants contested the position. For instance, in Osogbo/Olorunda/Orolu/Irepodun Federal Constituency and Ede North/EdeSouth/Ejigbo/Egbedore Federal Constituency, delegates unanimously chose their candidates on a consensus platform. The situation was the same in Ifelodun/Boripe/Odo-Otin Federal Constituency, where a consensus candidate also emerged. Wole Oke was endorsed as the flag-bearer of the PDP at the House of Representatives primaries in Obokun/Oriade Federal Constituency. For Odo-Otin/Ifelodun/Boripe Federal Constituency, Kayode Oduoye, got the clearance as the flag bearer.

Ismail Kolawole of Boluwaduro/Ila/Ifedayo Federal Constituency would fly the PDP flag to contest for the House of Representatives seat.

For the Oriade/Obokun Federal Constituency, Hon. Wole Oke, PDP’s candidate will take on the incumbent Hon. Nathaniel Agunbiade. The federal constituency is one of the few, where the PDP, through Wole Oke, had an impressive performance in 2011. Oke, who participated in the PDP governorship primary poll but lost to Omisore, is set again to battle the APC candidate that defeated him in 2011 election.

It is believed that Oke would put all he has into it because he is aiming to to be the Speaker of the House of Representatives  when it inaugurated after the election. Oke is counting on his two term membership of the House, where he was once the chairman, House Committee on Defence.
