    Court remands man for beating woman to coma

    An Ota Magistrates’ Court in Ogun on Wednesday remanded a 30 year-old man, Oladipupo Akeem in prison custody for allegedly assaulting a woman, Tosin Akindele.

    The defendant, who lives at No 17 Adetula St., Iju, Ota, is facing a charge of assault.

    The Prosecutor, Cpl. Abdulkareem Mustapha, told the court that the accused committed the offence on May 24 at about 11:30 a.m at No. 80 Ogooluwa St., Iju Itusi, Ota.

    Abdulkareem alleged that the accused assaulted one Tosin Akindele by beating her to a state of coma.

    “The complainant is still critically unstable in the hospital and no one knows if the victim will survive,” he said.

    He said that the offence contravened Sections 249 and 351 of the Criminal Code Vol.1, Laws of Ogun, 2006.

    The defendant however, pleaded not guilty to the charge and the Chief Magistrate, Mrs A.I. Adelaja, ordered that he should be remanded in prison custody.

    Adelaja adjourned the case till June 16 for consideration of bail.

    Police arraign two for stealing $14m from church

    The Police in Ogun on Monday arraigned two men, Akapo Paul,73, and Johnson Shorinnolu,63, for allegedly stealing $14 million belonging to the West African Christian Mission.

    They appeared before an Ota Magistrates’ Court

    The accused, whose addresses are unknown, are facing two-count charge of stealing and conspiracy.

    The Prosecutor, Abdulkareem Mustapha, told the court that the accused committed the offences sometime in 2015 at about 9:30 pm at West African Christian Mission at No.49 Tarmac Road, Ota.

    Mustapha alleged that the accused conspired, as signatories to the bank account of West African Christian mission, to steal 14 million dollars.

    He said that the offences contravened Sections 390 (8) (b) and 516 of the Criminal Code Vol.1, Laws of Ogun, 2006.

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

     

    The Chief Magistrate, Mrs A.I. Adelaja, admitted them to bail in the sum of N2 million each with two sureties in like sum.

     

    She said the sureties must be residents within the court’s jurisdiction and should be gainfully employed.

     

    Adelaja also directed the sureties to swear to an affidavit of means and show evidence of tax payments to Ogun Government.

     

    The magistrate adjourned the case till May 20 for hearing.

    Police arraign four over alleged theft of N700,000

    The Police in Ogun on Wednesday charged four men: Ogunkoya Adebayo (22), Olufemi Adelaja (24), Onini Brown (20) and Ifeoluwa Olugbenga (27), before an Ota Magistrates’ Court for allegedly breaking into the house of one Sadiku Ogundimi and stealing N700,000 cash.
    The accused persons, whose addresses were unknown, are facing a three-count charge of conspiracy, stealing and burglary.
    The Prosecutor, Sgt. Chudu Gbesi, told the court that the accused, and others still at large, committed the offences on Feb. 10 at 4:00 p.m. at Ijamido Street, Ota.
    Gbesi said that the accused and his accomplices conspired amongst themselves to break into the house of the complainant and stole N700,000 cash.
    He said that the offences contravened Sections 390 (9), 413 and 516 of the Criminal Code, Vol. 1, Laws of Ogun, 2006.
    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
    The Senior Magistrate, Mr S.O. Banwo, granted bail to the accused in the sum of N750,000 with one surety in the like sum.

     

    He said that the surety must be resident within the court’s jurisdiction and should be gainfully employed.

     

    Banwo also directed that the surety should swear to an affidavit of means and produce two-years’ tax clearance from the Ogun Government.

     

    In addition, the surety should submit four recent passport photographs to the court and must possess a reasonable means of identification.

     

    The case was adjourned to April 14, for hearing.
