  • Boko Haram attacks Michika, bombs bank

Boko Haram insurgents have attacked Michika town in Michika Local Government Area of Adamawa State, razing the only commercial bank building in the town.

The Nation gathered Tuesday morning that the insurgents got into the town about 7 pm Monday after overpowering the military formation in the town.

Witnesses said the insurgents seized control of the town for a while, scaring hundreds of residents into surrounding bushes until soldiers arrived from Madagali following a reinforcement call from military authorities.

Michika lies in the northern part of Adamawa State, an immediate neighbour to Madagali Local Government Area which was haunted by Boko Haram in the weeks and days to the February 16 and March 9 general elections.

In the Monday attack on Michika, the insurgents bombed the Union Bank of Nigeria branch, the only banking facility in the town.

Sources said the insurgents also burnt houses in Koppa village as they fled towards Sambisa with soldiers and mobilised local hunters on their trail.

The Adamawa State Police Public Relations Officer, Othman Abubakar who confirmed the attack in a telephone interview with our correspondent Tuesday morning, said his information did not indicate any human casualty and that security agents had brought the situation under control.

The Police in Adamawa State confirmed Sunday evening that a female suicide bomber trying to bomb people in a crowd in Shuwa, Adamawa State succeeded only in killing herself.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Othman Abubakar, who confirmed the development to The Nation correspondent, said a second suicide bomber who similarly attempted to detonate a bomb strapped on her, was stopped from doing so by security agents.

“While the first one killed herself as she sought to kill others, the second one was saved from herself and her targets,” Othman said.

Shuwa is in Madagali Local Government Area (LGA), a place that has in recent weeks and months been haunted frequently by the Boko Haram insurgents.

He added that two people who were wounded had been taken to hospital while the police arrested three people over the fight, namely Shamsudeen Abubakar,  Aliyu Musa and Muhammed Abba.

The incident came against reduced criminal activities across Adamawa State. The state has been relatively crime-free since the election season began about two weeks ago, something which a security personnel recently described as a direct result of the political engagements.

The personnel said, “The cime-minded ones as well as the law abiding ones around the state have been engaged by our politicians. They have no idle time to get to mischief. That’s why the state has been resting from issues of crime.”

  • Boko Haram kills five in Adamawa

Boko Haram insurgents attacked three communities in Madagali Local Government Area of Adamawa State Monday night, dislodging policemen on routine duty and wreaking havoc on the town.

A security officer who spoke on the incident on condition of anonymity Tuesday morning said the insurgents killed three people, destroyed 20 shops and three cars and carted away valuable items.

The anonymous security officer named the communities affected as Shuwa, Kirshingari and Shuari.

This latest attack confirms fears over the security situation in Madagali, the only local government area in Adamawa State where the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had earlier said voting would take place in only three communities, including Shuwa.

Residents said the insurgents who arrived in several vehicles about 7pm Monday, took over Madagali until soldiers from Gulak and Michika intervened to engage the insurgents in a battle that lasted for about two hours.

The Commander of 28 Task Force Battalion in Mubi, Lt Col Haruna, said the insurgents had been repelled.

The Police Public Relations Officer in Adamawa State, DSP Othman Abubakar, assured that a combined team of security personnel had brought the situation under control.

Madagali is one of the seven LGAs in Adamawa State that Boko Haram once seized. The situation remained so bad in the area just before elections in 2015 that the elections did not hold there and the neighbouring Michika LGA.

A mob on Thursday killed a police inspector along the Wuro-Dole-Pariya Road in Girei local government area of Adamawa State.

The Spokesman of Adamawa State Police Command, Othman Abubakar, said the incident occurred following a misunderstanding between some bus passengers and a routine patrol team along the road.

Abubakar, who did not give details of the misunderstanding, said it led to the deceased opening fire which killed one of the passengers.

He said the late inspector was mobbed to death, adding that the police had recovered his corpse and gun with eight rounds of live ammunition.

An eyewitness, who simply identified himself as Sadiq, said the incident followed a disagreement over a N50 bribe.

According to him, the driver of the vehicle in which the late passenger was travelling in offered a N50 bribe to the policemen but they insisted on collecting N100.

He said a passenger challenged them and that led to a hot argument.

“The deceased policeman shot the passenger and injured another person in the bus.

  • Many feared dead in fresh Adamawa attack

Many feared dead in fresh Adamawa attack

Many people were feared dead on Thursday in a fresh attack by Boko Haram Islamists in Ghumbili community in the Madagali Local Government Area of Adamawa.

The attack comes a few days after a similar incident in a neighbouring village in the Local Government, known as Mildu, where seven people were killed by the insurgents.

Confirming the attack, the Chairman of Madagali Local Government Council, Mr Yusuf Muhammed, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the attack lasted from 11 p.m. on Wednesday to 3 a.m. on Thursday.

He said that the jihadists burnt no fewer than 60 houses and looted foodstuff.

“They looted foodstuff, killed livestock and burnt the village completely,” he stated.

Muhammed said that the exact number of dead and injured people had yet to be ascertained and that villagers who escaped the attack were currently taking refuge at Gulak, the headquarters of the council.

But the Spokesman of the Police Command in Adamawa, Mr Othman Abubakar, who also confirmed the attack, said that no life was lost.

He said, however, that houses were destroyed in the attack–the latest in a string of deadly blows on mainly soft targets in Nigeria’s troubled northeast.

Speaking on the development, the Executive Chairman of the Adamawa State Emergency Management Agency, Mr Haruna Furo, said that only one person was killed and that many houses were destroyed.

Boko Haram appears to have raised its onslaught in recent weeks in its eight-year bloody insurgency that has claimed thousands of lives.
