    Blast kills two children, injures five others in Adamawa

    The Chairman of Hong Local Government in Adamawa, Alhaji Haliru Lala, has confirmed the death of two children in a blast in Fadaman-Rake Village.

    Lala told News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Yola that five others were also injured in the incident which occurred late on Thursday evening.

    He said that some children playing by the road side were given a polythene bag containing explosives, which was later exploded by an unknown person passing by in a car.

    “In all, seven of them were affected; two died on the spot, four are on admission while one sustained minor injury and has been treated.”

    The chairman expressed the concern of the council over the incident suspected to be the work of insurgents.

    He said that the council had therefore, directed the Mobilization Committee to commence mass enlightenment on the need for parents to caution their children against accepting parcels and gifts from strangers.

    In another account, a resident of the village who simply identified himself as Adamu, said that the strangers who gave the bag to the children were riding in a Toyota Starlet car.

    “They gave one of the children the bag and told him that it was sent by his father to take home.

    “While taking it home with his friends, the curious boys, most of them between six and seven years, decided to open the bag before reaching home and it exploded,” Adamu said.

    Meanwhile, the Spokesman of the Police Command in Adamawa, SP Othman Abubakar, has confirmed the incident.

    NAN reports that the incident is the first of its kind in area since its recovery from Boko Haram occupation in 2014.

  • Two missing policemen found dead in Adamawa

    The Police in Adamawa has confirmed that the two Mobile Policemen declared missing on Sunday following an attack on three villages in Demsa local government area of the state have been found dead.

    The Command’s spokesman, Othman Abubakar, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Yola that the men were found drowned in a river.

    “They were found dead; drown in the river,” Othman said.

    Othman, who did not give details, said the police was still hunting for the attackers and so far no arrest had been made.

    NAN recalls that the police had on Sunday declared three Mobile Policemen dead with two missing along with four rifles following an attack by suspected herdsmen on Kwayine, Gidan Dadi and Karlahi villages of Demsa local government area.

    The MOPOL were among those drafted to contain tension in the communities after clashes erupted following the killing of 47 cattle in the area.

    The state Governor, Muhammad Bindow, had condemned the attack, which occurred less than 24-hour after a government delegation on peace building mission visited the area.

    The governor in a statement signed by the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mallam Ahmad Sajoh, directed security agencies to deploy more personnel to the area.

  • Adamawa: Ban on Christmas fireworks still in force – Police

    The Police in Adamawa Police on Wednesday renewed the ban on fireworks during the yuletide period across the state.

    The police issued the warning in a statement issued by the spokesman of the state police command, Othman Abubakar, in Yola.

    Abubakar advised parents and guardians to caution their wards, saying the command would not hesitate to arrest anyone caught selling or using fireworks.

    He listed the ban items to include knockouts, banger and other explosives.

    “The ban on the use of fireworks such as knockouts, banger and other forms of explosives during the Christmas and New Year festive periods is still enforced,” the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) quoted the police spokesman as saying in the statement.

    “This callous attitude may cause not only distractions to the general public but may also constitute a security threat and other environmental hazards.

    “The command therefore, advises parents to warn their children and wards to refrain from such ugly trend as police will not hesitate to clamp down on persons caught selling or using these fireworks.”
