Public school enrolment hits 300,000 in 1 year – Otti

Gov. Alex Otti of Abia says enrolment in public primary and secondary schools in the state has increased by more than 100 per cent, from about 117,000 to over 300,000 within one year.

Otti disclosed this during his monthly media parley with newsmen at the Government House, Umuahia on Thursday night.

He attributed the growth to reforms by his administration that were aimed at making education accessible and affordable.

“We will continue with our push to make education available and affordable to every Nigerian living here.

“The positive results coming out from the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education show that enrolment has moved from about 117,000 people a year ago, to over 300,000 as at the end of last month.

“That is exactly the kind of result we expect. It is good news,” the governor said.

He further said that the government had intensified reconstruction and renovation works in Abia State University (ABSU), Uturu; Abia State College of Education (Technical), Arochukwu; and Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic, Aba, and other state-owned tertiary institutions.

Otti said that hostels, offices and academic facilities were being renovated and rebuilt in the institutions, with construction ongoing at both the temporary and permanent sites of the Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic, Aba and Osisioma, respectively.

According to him, some renovated hostels at ABSU are already in use.

He also said that the ongoing recruitment of 4,000 additional teachers by the government formed part of its efforts to strengthen the education sector.

On infrastructure, Otti said that over 30 road projects were presently undergoing construction or rehabilitation, with many nearing completion.

He said that the legendary Omenuko Bridge and the Abam–Okobo–Amuvi–Arochukwu Road would be inaugurated on Feb. 13.

He said that the Uratta Road and the Old Express Road would soon be commissioned for reconstruction, as part of the government’s efforts to fully restore Aba.

In the housing sector, the governor said the state had moved beyond the planning stage and that the Pocket Layout Housing Scheme for civil servants would soon be launched.

He said that other housing projects in Mbaisii, Mgbarakuma and Ubakala would soon take off.

On tourism and hospitality, he said that the state had entered into partnership with Amena Tourism and Hospitality Ltd., to digitally grade and rate hotels and hospitality facilities across Abia, using GPS and globally accepted standards.

The governor also announced the launch of a pilot biogas project at the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, aimed at converting waste to renewable energy.

He further said that the State Electricity Regulation Authority took over regulatory control of electricity distribution from the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission on Dec. 24.

He described the development as part of government’s efforts to achieve energy sufficiency, particularly through the planned acquisition of the Umuahia Ringed Fence Area.

Otti spoke on government’s health programmes, saying that the Project Ekwueme Phase One, covering 200 Primary Healthcare Centres, had been completed, with many already functional.

He also said that over 600 healthcare professionals had been recruited and were being deployed across the facilities.

The governor said that a new General Hospital was under construction in Ndoki, Ukwa East LGA, following the donation of land by the General Overseer of Omega Power Ministries.

He said that the hospital would be completed before the end of the year.

He said that reconstruction works were ongoing at the Abia State University Teaching Hospital, Aba; Abia Specialist Hospital, Amachara; and the tertiary health facility at Umunneato.

On water supply, he said that the CKC Water Project in Aba was nearing completion, alongside similar projects in Ariaria and parts of Umuahia.

Otti said that the water project at Abia State College of Education (Technical), Arochukwu, had reached over 90 per cent completion and would serve the surrounding communities.

He expressed gratitude to Abia residents and security agencies for ensuring a peaceful festive period in the state.

He said that feedbacks from visitors and residents had been largely positive.

Otti approves employment of 649 new medical health workers in Abia

The Abia state government has employed 649 new medical workers out of the proposed 771 medical personnel for the health sector in the state.

The Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, announced this in Umuahia, the state capital, during an interaction with journalists.

Kanu said that the development is in line with the government’s vision and continuous effort towards repositioning the health sector for better services.

He stated that out of the newly employed workers, 432 are Nurses who have been posted to work in the state’s primary healthcare centres that are being equipped and functionalized across the state.

He said that even after the shortfall of 122 medical personnel is filled up to bring the total number to 771, the Ministry of Health would still be open to employing more medical personnel at the state level.

Prince Kanu noted that among the newly recruited medical personnel is a neurosurgeon who had the opportunity to work in New York City but chose to come back and work in Abia state.

“Among the newly recruited medical personnel are those who have access to work overseas, who have chosen to come and work for the state government,

“Because of the confidence they have in the leadership style of the Governor and the massive reforms being carried out in the state’s health sector.

“Recently, a neurosurgeon was employed amongst this new set of medical personnel, someone who is an expert in this field and has a very rare speciality in medical practice,” Prince Kanu stated.

Prince Kanu revealed that Governor Alex Otti has been voted as the best performing Governor of the southeast zone by the Forum of Academic Doctors, following the massive transformation of the state across all sectors.

“Of course, we are aware that His Excellency does not accept awards, but it is important to note that Nigerians and the entire world are taking notice of what is going on here in the state.

“I want to inform you also that the state does not in any way participate in all these awards that come the way of the Governor.

“But because Nigerians are interested in what is happening, various groups are looking up to Abia for leadership,” Prince Kanu noted.

  • LP will end Kalu’s re-election to Senate, Otti vows

LP will end Kalu’s re-election to Senate, Otti vows

Abia State Governor Alex Otti has said the Labour Party (LP) will end the ambition of Abia North Senator Orji Uzor Kalu to win a re-election to the Red Chamber in 2027.

Otti was reacting to a statement credited to Kalu during his vivit to Ebonyi State, where he promised to ensure that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC) record a landslide victory in the 2027 general election.

In a statement by his Special Adviser on Media, Mr. Ferdinand Ekeoma, the governor said he did not need Kalu’s support to be re-elected in 2027.

The statement said: “Ordinarily, we wouldn’t have bothered to respond to Senator Kalu over whom he chooses to work with or for, since it’s within his constitutional and democratic rights, but because he drew the name of Governor Alex Otti into it once again, we thought it appropriate to respond and put the records straight.

“First, Governor Otti has never gone to Senator Kalu to appeal to him to support his re-election bid; neither has he ever made any attempt to convince him to work against his party, the APC, or their would-be governorship candidate in 2027.”

“Senator Kalu’s penchant for consistent emphasis on not supporting Otti against his party and would-be candidate, has, to say the least, become pedestrian and ludicrous.

“If Senator Kalu’s repeated statements are geared towards issuing subtle threats to Governor Otti, then he is committing a calamitous blunder of costly consequences, because threats toughen rather than frighten or weaken Governor Otti.

“Again, those who genuinely want to support their party and candidates do not make unnecessary noise about it, rather they show it through hard work and sincere dedication.

“At this point, we challenge Senator Kalu to produce his unit and ward results in the last governorship and presidential elections.

“The results from INEC show clearly that the APC lost woefully both in the governorship and presidential elections at the polling units and wards of all the APC candidates in the 2023 election in Bende Local Government Area where Senator Kalu hails from.

“The question is: if he truly worked for the President and his party, why did the President lose in his constituency while he won in the election conducted on the same day?

“Again, if Governor Otti could convince the people to so unanimously vote for him and the LP in the last election when they supported him merely on the strength of his character, capacity to serve, excellent antecedents and sound campaign manifesto, which were just promises and which saw him emerge the only LP governor in the country, how does Senator Kalu think that the people would not support and vote massively for Governor Otti and any other candidate or party he directs them to vote for, having seen the enduring transformation he has brought to the state in less than three years as governor?

“It would be strange if Senator Kalu has yet to realise that Abia people see Governor Otti as their best political party, and his re-election as a divine project that must be executed with courage, passion and precision.

“Finally, we congratulate Senator Kalu for drafting his younger brother into the 2027 governorship race. We need to remind him that this same brother of his was in the race for the 2023 governorship election as the flag bearer of APP where he placed last at the end of polls.

“It must also be noted that at the moment, four capable and formidable senatorial aspirants have indicated their intention to run for the Abia North seat under the Labour Party and whoever amongst them wins the primaries will receive massive support from the governor to win the elections come 2027.”

Otti moves to immortalise First House Speaker Jaja Wachuku

Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has announced plans to immortalize Nigeria’s first Speaker of the House of Representatives, the late Dr. Jaja Wachuku, warning that societies that fail to honor their heroes risk losing their sense of purpose and identity.

The Governor spoke at Anglican Grammar School, Mbawsi, Isiala Ngwa North Local Government Area, during events marking the 108th posthumous birthday of the former Speaker, diplomat, and statesman, amid growing calls for the Abia State Government to name the state airport after him.

“Any society that does not recognise and celebrate its heroes will soon disappear. We are celebrating him because of the sacrifices he made,” Otti said.

He explained that the decision to honour Wachuku followed a deeper study of his life and achievements, which revealed that despite his immense national contributions as Speaker of the Federal House of Representatives, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Minister of Aviation, he had not received commensurate recognition.

“I had always known about him, but sometime in 2023, I decided to read more about his life. By the time I finished, I felt that we had not done well enough. That was why I insisted that a documentary on his lifetime achievements must be produced,” the Governor stated.

Otti said the celebration was deliberately fixed on Wachuku’s birthday rather than the date of his death, describing him as a father, elder statesman, brilliant lawyer, and exceptional leader who made enormous sacrifices for Nigeria.

He disclosed that the state government had renovated Wachuku’s country home, preserved his renowned library, and rehabilitated the tombs of the late statesman and his wife. He added that the government was already considering naming a major public asset after Wachuku to further immortalise his legacy.

“We are looking at naming something great after him,” the Governor said in response to appeals by stakeholders.

In his remarks, the Senator representing Abia South Senatorial District, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, described Wachuku as a national icon and father figure, recalling personal childhood encounters with him.

“What I saw and heard today has given me a new perspective on the man. It is our prayer that we too will be remembered positively when we leave this world,” Abaribe said.

Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, Mr Emmanuel Emeruwa, said Wachuku’s life of service, alongside Governor Otti’s leadership style, should inspire present and future generations.

Chief of Staff to the Governor, Pastor Caleb Ajagba, said the decision to renovate Wachuku’s home followed disturbing reports about its state of disrepair, noting that the Governor approved the funds immediately after a bill of quantities was submitted.

“This is not about politics. The Governor does not celebrate himself; he celebrates others,” Ajagba said.

President-General of Oha Nsulu Unity Forum, Chief Eric Opah, described the siting of the Abia Airport project in Nsulu land as symbolic, given Wachuku’s role in Nigeria’s aviation history, and appealed for improved infrastructure in the host communities.

Also speaking, the leader of the Ngwa people and former Attorney-General of Abia State, Chief Theo Nkire, described Wachuku as a man whose life was defined by national firsts, while President of the Ngwa Social Club, Prof Paul Ananaba, noted that he was the first lawyer from the area and one of Nigeria’s finest legal minds.

Senator Bob Nwanunu described Wachuku as a legend and an exceptional orator, proposing that the Abia Airport be named after him, a call echoed by the lawmaker representing Isiala Ngwa North and South Federal Constituency, Chief Ginger Onwusibe.

Former Senator Nkechi Nworgu commended Governor Otti for reviving long-abandoned projects and for giving overdue recognition to the late statesman.

Speaking on behalf of the family, Mr Ndubuisi Jaja-Wachuku expressed gratitude to the Governor and the state government, describing the honour as an unexpected but pleasant surprise.

Born on January 1, 1918, Jaja Anucha Wachuku was a Pan-Africanist, lawyer, diplomat, and humanitarian.

He attended Trinity College, Dublin, where he became the first African medalist and laureate in Oratory. He died on November 7, 1996, at the age of 78.

The event featured the unveiling of Wachuku’s renovated residence and library, the rehabilitation of his tomb and that of his wife, the laying of wreaths, and the presentation of his walking stick by his son to the Governor in appreciation of his leadership and service to the state.

  • I won’t dump Labour Party after Obi’s exit, says Otti

I won’t dump Labour Party after Obi’s exit, says Otti

Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has assured residents of the state and his supporters that he has no intention of defecting from the Labour Party (LP), despite reports linking the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, with a planned move to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Obi defected to ADC on Wednesday, December 31,from Labour Party. He made his decision known in a statement posted on his Facebook page.

Speaking during the December edition of his monthly media chat with journalists at the State Banquet Hall, Government House, Umuahia, Governor Otti said Obi personally informed him of his decision before taking steps to leave the Labour Party for another platform.

The governor, however, made it clear that he remains committed to the Labour Party, stressing that he has no plans to exit the party that provided him the platform to become governor.

Otti explained that his decision to stay in the Labour Party is driven by his resolve to continue efforts aimed at rebuilding and strengthening the party.

According to him, leaving the party would only be considered if all attempts to redeem and reposition it fail.

He reaffirmed his loyalty to the Labour Party and assured supporters that his focus remains on governance in Abia State and sustaining the political ideals that brought his administration to power.

“I joined Labour Party before Peter Obi. I didn’t join the Labour Party with him. He has communicated me that he was leaving Labour Party and I gave him my blessings, but I remain in Labour Party.

“I told him that I will have to continue the struggle to rescue Labour Party. That’s the party that brought me to power.

“If we fight and get to the end and we can’t retrieve Labour Party, then, we can now discuss options. But for now, I am not defecting with him.

Responding to the call by the Deputy Speaker House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, urging him to join the All Progressives Congress (APC), Otti while dismissing Kalu said, “I want to thank the Deputy Speaker for heeding the call that I made in my Christmas message, calling on our people who have the means to extend consideration to the less privileged, particularly at this season. So, seeing that he heeded that call and distributed rice and some money to vulnerable people, I thank him.

“But then, I have also taken the principal decision not to dignify all the comments that he made with any response. I am sure that you know a man that they called Winston Churchill, he was a two time Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and lived for 90 years. He was a profound thinker and writer. There was a comment that he made. He said that you will never get to your destination if you stop and throw stones at every dog that barks.

“So, we remain focused on our job, we don’t want to be distracted, that will be my response.”

Responding to question on whether he has plans to run for the second tenure, Otti said, “I have also resisted the urge to begin to make predictions of what will happen in the future because I don’t have that anointing. But if God gives us life, it’s His Will that will be done, not man’s will.

“Let’s not speak when the Lord has not spoken. But we can always have our wish to say this is what we want to do, but at the end of the day, everything is in God’s hands.”

Giving a breakdown on what his administration has achieved over the last one month and also intended to do in the coming days, Gov. Otti disclosed that as part of the state government’s plans to ease off transportation stress from Abians, his administration would soon receive the delivery of more 20 electric buses, adding that another 60 of the buses were expected in the state to make up the number of the Electric Buses to 100, plying different routes in the state.

The governor also announced that the Umuahia bus terminal would be commissioned early January with construction work to begin in Aba bus terminal few months ahead.

While attributing the recent acquisitions of some of the moribun companies by the state government, Gov reinstated the commitment of his government to address the level of unemployment among the teeming youths in the state.

He added that work would soon resume at the Abia Mega City village as part of plans by the state to end medical tourism by Nigerians and exportation of health workers to the overseas.

The governor hailed the Speaker and other lawmakers for the speedy passage of the State document.

He promised that the state would witness more people-oriented projects, programmes and policies next year.

The governor assured the people that his administration would faithfully implement the budget and sustain the momentum of accelerated development across the state.

He described the process as a testament to democratic engagement, transparency and diligence between the Executive and the Legislative arms of government.

Otti hailed the House of Assembly for its thorough scrutiny of the Appropriation Bill, noting that the time taken to review it was an indication of seriousness and commitment to the interests of Abians.

“I’m very glad that this House pays attention to details, not just a House that would pass a bill without asking questions.

“I’m not unaware of the engagements going back and forth between the Executive team and the Legislative team.

“And that is what democracy should be about. Questions should be asked and numbers should be scrutinized. Two good heads, they say, are better than one.

“That this Bill took a little bit of time to pass is also a plus. It shows that some work was being done. And it also puts the executive on his toes to ensure that he continues to up their game, to produce numbers that can be valued for,” he said.

“This is a disciplined government and it will stick to the budget that has been approved. If there is any reason for anything to change, we will still come back to you with a legitimate defence.”

Speaker Emmanuel Emeruwa described the 2026 budget as a “Project of Acceleration and New Possibilities”.

He noted that the state was nearing “ground zero” after years of infrastructural and developmental challenges.

“That is why we are beginning to accelerate. I do believe that we have started and we are not going to slow down until this place is completely transformed,” he added.

Assenting to the laws, the governor said: “This budget is more than numbers — it is a strategic plan crafted to deliver on our administration’s promises.

“We have focused on what truly matters to the people, ensuring that resources are allocated to meet the critical needs in our communities.”

Giving the lawmakers a pat on the back for doing a good jo, Soludo said: “Our productive partnership with the House of Assembly has been crucial.

“Their thoroughness and cooperation have helped deliver laws that will accelerate the development and prosperity of Anambra State.

“We submitted draft appropriation of N757 billion but in their wisdom after various reviews, the budget size very slightly increased to N766 billion for the 2026 fiscal year. So, we now get to work.

“Transparency, accountability, and inclusive governance are not just ideals; they are the bedrock of our government.

“By enacting these laws, we are creating the enabling environment for effective service delivery and sustainable growth.”

In Osogbo, the Osun State capital, Governor Adeleke assented to ₦723 billion 2026 Appropriation Bill into law in the presence of Deputy Governor Kola Adewusi; Speaker Adewale Egbedun; the Chief of Staff, Kazeem Akinleye; the Head of Service, Elder Ayanleye Aina, and members of the State Executive Council (Exco).

In a statement by his media aide , Olawale Rasheed, Governor Adeleke said: “This is the final year of our first term with expanded ambitions to complete ongoing projects and launch new initiatives for the good of our people.

“Our administration has in the last three budget years laid solid foundation for the sustainable development of our dear state. We completed many abandoned projects and launched new ones. We paid billions of naira in pension and salary debt. We targeted workers welfare and approved and implemented payments of promotions arrears and paid many allowances which the previous government neglected.”

The governor said his team had resolved to consolidate his administration’s achievements across the sectors.

He said: “The year 2026 is a dual year of renewal of mandate and rolling out of a new agenda for the next four years. The consolidation for 2026 is a year of continuation, of further good governance and of continuity for sustainable governance.

“Year 2026 is a loaded era as an election year when by God and people, our mandate will be renewed. But we should not allow governance to suffer. We must multi-task.

Speaker Olamide Oladiji hailed Governor Aiyedatiwa for transforming the state and giving Akure a capital-like appearance.

He also highlighted the Assembly’s achievements in passing Bills that regulate community activities, prohibiting kidnapping, registering domestic staff, establishing the State Road Fund, and creating coastal and waterways management agencies.

In Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, Governor Abiodun assented to the N1.668 trillion 2026 budget following its passage by the House of Assembly.

The passage followed the presentation and adoption of the report of the House Committee on Finance and Appropriation, chaired by Mr Musefiu Lamidi (APC-Ado-Odo/Ota II) during plenary at the Assembly Complex, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.

Lamidi, who moved the motion for the adoption of the committee’s report, said the Bill was submitted to the Assembly 26 days earlier and had undergone scrutiny.

The motion was seconded by Folawewo Salami (APC-Ifo II) and supported by the whole House during plenary presided over by Speaker Oludaisi Elemide.

The Bill was later read and adopted clause by clause before the Committee of the Whole House; after which the motion for its third reading was moved by the Majority Leader, Yusuf Sheriff (APC-Ado-Odo/Ota I).

The motion was seconded by Minority Leader Lukman Adeleye (PDP – Odogbolu) and supported by all the lawmakers through a unanimous voice vote.

The Clerk/Head of the Legislative Service, Sakiru Adebakin, read the Bill for the third time, while Elemide directed that a clean copy be transmitted to the governor for assent.

Earlier, while Presenting the committee’s report on the bill titled “H.B. No. 028/OG/2025 – Year 2026 Appropriation Bill”, Lamidi said the Assembly made adjustments to the budget proposals of three Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs).

Governor Abiodun had, on December 3, presented the 2026 Appropriation Bill to the House of Assembly for approval.

According to him, the goal is to transition from humanitarian assistance to sustainable development, ensuring resettled citizens live with dignity, self-reliance and opportunity.

Zulum reviewed the 2025 fiscal year, citing macroeconomic challenges that affected budget implementation.

He recalled that the 2025 budget stood at N615.85 billion, comprising N373.67 billion for capital expenditure and N242.17 billion for recurrent expenditure.

The governor said that assumptions on exchange rate stability and inflation under the Federal Government’s Medium-Term Expenditure Framework were disrupted by prevailing economic realities.

Despite the challenges, he said the state adopted proactive fiscal measures that ensured continued service delivery, infrastructure development and support to security agencies.

Responding, the Speaker of the state assembly, Abdulkarim Lawan, lauded the achievements made by the governor in the 2025 budget.

Lawan also assured the governor of the assembly’s determination to pass the budget within a short time.

In Kano, Governor Yusuf assented to ₦1.477 trillion 2026 budget following its consideration during plenary.

The passage of the Bill followed its second reading and deliberations in the Committee of the Whole at a sitting presided over by Speaker Jibril Falgore in Kano.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that Governor Yusuf had presented the 2026 Appropriation Bill to the Assembly on November 19 for legislative consideration.

A breakdown of the approved budget shows that ₦934.6 billion, representing 68 per cent, was allocated to capital expenditure, while ₦433.4 billion, accounting for 32 per cent, was earmarked for recurrent expenditure.

The capital-to-recurrent ratio is considered one of the highest in the state’s recent fiscal history, reflecting the government’s emphasis on infrastructure and development projects.

With the passage of the bill, the assembly is expected to transmit the budget to Gov. Yusuf for assent in line with constitutional provisions.

Also, the assembly also held a valedictory session in honour of its two deceased members, Aminu Sa’ad, who represented Ungogo Constituency, and Sarki Aliyu Daneji, who represented Kano Municipal Constituency.

The lawmakers died in active service on Wednesday, Dec. 24, just hours apart.

During the session, Speaker Falgore described their demise as a grievous loss to the assembly and the state, noting that the late legislators were committed public servants who contributed significantly to lawmaking and community development.

He said their dedication to democratic ideals and the welfare of their constituents would remain indelible.

The Speaker extended condolences to Gov. Yusuf, former Governor, Sen. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the families of the deceased lawmakers, and the entire people of Kano State.

According to him, the assembly will continue to honour their memories and uphold the values they stood for. (NAN)

  • Akwa Ibom Senator hails Otti for restoring Abia urban pride

Akwa Ibom Senator hails Otti for restoring Abia urban pride

Former Deputy Chief Whip of the Senate, Senator Emmanuel Ibok Essien, has commended Abia  Governor, Alex Otti, for what he described as a visible and massive transformation of Aba and other major cities in the State through renewed infrastructure development and improved urban sanitation.

Senator Ibok Essien, who is also the Founder of Ritman University, Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State, made the remark while driving through Aba and Umuahia en route to neighbouring Rivers State.

He observed with delight that the scale and pace of work carried out by the Otti administration within just over two years deserved sincere commendation.

He singled out the turnaround of Aba’s urban roads and drainage projects, including the reconstruction of the once dilapidated Port Harcourt Road, now expanded into a modern six-lane carriageway with streetlights, roundabouts and proper drainage, describing it as the restoration of a major economic artery abandoned for decades.

Drawing from personal experience, the elder statesman recalled that he was part of the team of engineers that supervised the original construction of Aba Urban Roads and Drainages by MCC, which included the Port Harcourt Road in Aba between 1979 and 1983, when Abia was under the old Imo State and governed by the late Sam Mbakwe, the first elected civilian governor of the State.

He observed that since that period, the roads and much of Aba’s infrastructure suffered prolonged neglect, making the current expansion and upgrade a landmark intervention that has restored connectivity and eased movement across the commercial city.

The Fellow, Nigerian Society of Engineers (FNSE) also praised the remodelling and reconstruction of the Ariaria International Market by Governor Otti, saying the project has repositioned Aba as a modern commercial hub with facilities that meet international standards.

He further noted the construction of several roads in Umuahia, the evacuation of long-standing refuse dumps, and the general improvement in sanitation across the State, stressing that these efforts have returned Aba and other urban centres to functional and livable conditions.

According to him, the fact that Aba has become passable again after decades of deplorable roads is a clear indication of purposeful leadership. He added that with the speed at which Governor Otti is driving development, Abia is steadily reclaiming its place as a leading economic and industrial centre in the South-East.

The immediate-past National Chairman of the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), also called for sustained public support for Governor Otti, noting that development thrives best when leaders are encouraged by the people.

The first Akwa Ibom legislator to be elected into the ECOWAS parliament equally commended the synergy between Governor Otti and his Akwa Ibom counterpart, Pastor Umo Eno, saying both leaders have demonstrated a shared commitment to urban renewal and people-centric governance, which deserves collective support in their respective states.

No life was lost. Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Ukoha Njoku Ukoha, confirmed the incident.

Earlier, the off-campus students in Emuoha satellite campus had protested attacks and harassment by hoodlums and called on the management of the school to relocate them to the main campus in Port Harcourt.

But the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Isaac Zeb-Obipi, said the university would neither close the Emuoha campus nor relocate the students because of the incidents.

The students were reportedly seized and taken away by their assailants.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) Superintendent of Police Grace Iringe-Koko confirmed the abduction.

Iringe-Koko said the miscreants shot many times before whisking the students to an unknown destination.

She said tactical police personnel had been deployed to rescue the students and apprehend the suspects.

A female student said she called her father, who contacted the Emuoha Police Division but complained that there was no response.

She said the attackers shot at her while they came from the bush, to pursue her.

Ukoha said: “In the early hours of December 2, an advance team of three members from the Office of the Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, on duty to Sam Mbakwe Airport, Imo State, was attacked by unidentified gunmen.

“The incident occurred between Umuowa and Ihite junction, shortly before the Sam Mbakwe Airport Junction in Imo State.

“The public is hereby informed that the convoy of Governor Otti was not involved in this attack, and no lives were lost during the unfortunate incident.”

Also, the Delta State Police Command has announced the death of a suspected kidnapper after a gun duel in Obiaruku.

The command confirmed the arrest of some suspected armed robbers and cultists as well as the recovery of some arms and ammunition.

Spokesman for the command, Superintendent of Police Bright Edafe, said in a statement that operatives of the Command’s State Anti-Cult Unit (SACU), in collaboration with community volunteers, were on patrol when they received intelligence that suspected kidnappers were mobilising within the Obiaruku forest for an attack.

He said the operatives advanced towards the location to forestall the plan.

Edafe said on approaching the area, the suspects opened fire from various directions.

He noted that the operatives responded, leading to the death of the suspect, while others escaped with various injuries.

“One AK-47 rifle with 42 rounds of live ammunition, nine mobile phones, and charms were recovered,” Edafe said.

Also, the spokesman said operatives of the CP-Special Assignment Team (CP-SAT), led by the Commander, Assistant Superintendent of Police Julius Robinson, recorded coordinated breakthroughs between November 28 and 29, this year, in efforts to dismantle criminal networks linked to theft, armed violence, and cult-related activities across Ughelli, Oghara, and Sapele.

He said the operatives, acting on credible intelligence, around Ekuigbo,  intercepted one of the syndicate’s key actors, Kelvin Oke, 42, and recovered a stolen tricycle in his possession.

He said more operations led to the arrest of two additional suspects: Victor Oyaye, male, 26, of Otor-Ogor community, identified as the gang leader, and Monday Emakpo, 31, of Okpara community, but residing in Agbara, Ughelli.

Edafe said another stolen tricycle and a local shotgun loaded with six cartridges were recovered.

Building on this momentum, he stated that CP-SAT sustained the offensive into the Oghara–Sapele axis and on November 29, acting on further intelligence, operatives stormed the residence of one Jeffery Saint, male, 28, of Ogharake, Oghara. He stated: “The suspect attempted to evade arrest but was swiftly restrained.

“A search of the premises led to the recovery of a local Beretta pistol and 15 rounds of ammunition, which were ready for deployment.”

Edafe added that the Eagle Net Special Squad, under the command of Superintendent of Police Danyaya Inusa, during a stop-and-search around the Northwest Filling Station by Mariam Babangida Junction on the Asaba–Benin Expressway, the traffic check turned into a dramatic chase.

Edafe said: “The officers closed in quickly and apprehended the fleeing suspect, who was later identified as Ezekiel Edeya, 28, of Emevo in Isoko North Local Government Area.

A search led to the recovery of a red bag he had attempted to discard. In it were a local pistol, three live cartridges, an iron plier, and one screwdriver. “Suspects are in custody and investigation is ongoing.”

CP Olufemi Abaniwonda commended the operatives for their gallantry and appreciated stakeholders for trusting the police with information in crime fighting.
