  • Southeast governors unite on region’s economic growth, says Otti

Southeast governors unite on region’s economic growth, says Otti

Southeast governors are working together to end insecurity and economic challenges facing the region, says Abia State Governor Alex Otti.

The collaboration, according to him, will put the Southeast back on the path of economic and social development.

Otti added that the governors resolved to prioritise governance by providing employment opportunities for Southeast youths and creating conducive environments for public and private businesses to thrive.

He spoke when a delegation of the Joint Body of Southeast Council of Traditional Rulers and Representatives of Igbo Archbishops and Bishops visited him in Umuahia, the Abia State capital at the weekend.

Otti told the  Afred Achebe-led delegation that the governors, despite their different party affiliations,  realised that the insecurity in the region required a unified approach to tackle.

He said: “Anyhow you look at it, we must deal with security as a region if not as a country. What feeds insecurity, to a large extent, is unemployment and poverty.

“It also feeds banditry and insurrection and we need to do everything possible to ensure that our people have something to do.”

The governor, who emphasised the need for a conducive environment for investments and businesses in the region, said he was personally aware of the exit of 20 to 25 firms from his state.

His words: “We know that investors are rational. If you don’t make your environment conducive to attracting investments, they will not come.

“I know at the minimum 20 to 25 businesses in Abia, before now, that just relocated at some point and closed shop.”

Otti also said governments of the Southeast must be intentional about having their investments/businesses.

He said those who argue that the government has business in business were being untruthful.

He said: “Government has business in business. There must be investments that would have to be made without looking at the profit. Sometimes, they tell you that government has no business in business. It’s a lie. “

“Government must step in at some point and take deliberate decisions to safeguard the economy by creating jobs.

“Government needs to come in and support the private sector to create jobs, if not for anything at all, to ensure that insecurity is reduced to the barest minimum.”

Otti enumerated ongoing initiatives in Abia State that are aimed at revitalising key economic hubs like Aba and Umuahia to attract investments and spur development.

The governor, who noted that Aba can drive Southeast’s development, identified regular power supply as a major development enabler.

He said  the $800 million 141- Megawatt Geometric Power Plant to be inaugurated today in Aba, would provide uninterrupted power supply to the city and its environs.

Otti added that his administration has already entered into talks with the investors on how to provide a 24-hour power supply to all parts of the state.

The governor pledged continued engagement with the team and assured that he would take into account the concerns raised during the meeting as part of the ongoing efforts to promote unity, development, and prosperity in the Southeast.

    • Governor: it’s too early for celebration

Abia State Governor Alex Otti says it is still early day in his stewardship- oriented administration and needs no celebration yet.

The governor said the ongoing infrastructural projects in the last eight months of his administration were dress rehearsals.

He spoke at the weekend at a

a grand civic reception organised in his honour by the people of IsialaNgwa South Local Government, held at the Group Primary School, Omoba, Isiala Ngwa.

Otti said it was difficult for him to accept to be hosted and celebrated during these early days of his administration.

He added that the reception by the Isiala Ngwa South people should represent that of the entire local governments.

The governor said: “To tell you the truth, it was a very difficult decision for me to accept. I do not want to be celebrated as such.

“The truth is that it is still early stage and somehow, I try to run away from events like this because if you don’t caution yourself, it is possible to derail. It is possible for you to begin to seek and clog the media,

“We are all from this state and we know that crowds like these were not available in the previous administration when the state was decaying.

“What you have seen in the last eight months is what the Englishman will call dress rehearsal.

“In the last eight months, we were running from one Federal High Court in Kano, to the Court of Appeal in Kano, to the Supreme Court on the Kano matter, then the tribunal in Umuahia, Court of Appeal in Owerri sitting in Lagos and then Supreme Court again, the second time. “

“We did not fear, we concentrated on the work. But now, our concentration will be more than doubled.”

He said the panel is not to indict individuals, but rather to look at relevant records and structures of ABSU from 2019 to 2023 and return to the state government, the recommendations that will take ABSU to its place of excellence.

Speaking in the same vein, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Gboyega Akosile, said the Super Eagles in spite losing the final, deserved commendation.

He commended the players, the coaching crew and the entire management of the team for making Nigeria proud at the competition.

    • Governor vows to remodel market gutted by fire

Abia State Governor Alex Otti has denied that it planned to spend N1.5billion on the purchase of two units of Hilux vehicles in the 2024 budget.

He said government at all levels must be held to account by the people if they are to succeed, adding that such is the true definition of democracy.

The governor attributed the controversial figure to a software glitch generated by the Excel package used in preparing the budget document.

“When I saw that report, I knew something was wrong. I knew it could either be the units or the price.

“So, I called the Commissioner for Budget and Planning and asked him to check it out and call me back.

“He did and reported that it was neither the units nor the price that was wrong, but the Excel.

“If you use Excel and the formula is not very right on a particular line, you’re bound to have a problem like that.

“It’s a mistake that has been corrected,” he said.

Dr. Otti said as soon as the news of the bloated figure got to him, he cross-checked the budget numbers on his hand held device and found that the N1.5 billion was not translated to the total budget figure and he was reassured.

The governor has said Eziukwu market in Aba South Local Government would be remodelled and retrofitted to a status befitting of a modern market.

He spoke when he visited the market to ascertain the extent of damage caused by the midnight fire at the market.

Otti said many of the shops were in deplorable state and needed renovation, as the integrity of most of the shops was questionable.

He added: “If you look at these shops, you’ll agree with me that a lot of them need renovation. Some of them need to be pulled down and rebuilt. Just as I promised to do on Ngwa road, I also will do here.

“So, I want to direct relevant authorities, including the GM, Greater Aba Development Agency (GADA), to start work, to modernise this market.”

The governor sympathised with victims of the fire and promised to assist them.

He was accompanied by the Commissioner for Trade, Commerce and Industry, Dr. Chimezie Ukaegbu;  Commissioner for Lands and Housing, Mr. Chaka Chukwumerije, and Director General, Greater Aba Development Authority (GADA), Mr. Uche Ukaeje, among other government functionaries.

He hailed the efforts of the visiting medical team, particularly Mr. Oriaku, for bringing the Revive team to Abia.

Oriaku said the medical mission was sponsored by his family, the late Rev. David Ukeje Oriaku family of Okaiuga Nkwoegwu, Umuahia North Local Government, in the spirit of giving back to the society.

He said the team had within the 13 days they held their outreach, performed over 700 consultations, conducted over 60 successful surgeries, ranging from Goiter to Hernia among others, and had kept check on patients to ensure there were no complications.

The governor said his administration takes healthcare delivery seriously, hence the focus on renovating and retrofitting the health outfits as well as the prompt measures taken to ensure the restoration of accreditation for the Abia State University’s medical school and Abia State University Teaching Hospital, Aba.

Both the university and the teaching hospital lost accreditation over two years ago.

The governor revealed that the government is presently rehabilitating approximately 15 general hospitals throughout the state.

He also emphasized that his administration remains committed to establishing a ‘Medical Village’, aimed at attracting medical tourists to Abia and stemming the flow of people seeking medical treatment abroad, particularly in countries like India.

Governor Otti commended the efforts of the visiting medical team, and particularly Oriaku, for single-handedly bringing the Revive team to Abia.

“I’m pleased to receive you and commend you for your labour of love. It is interesting that a single individual can do this.

“If all of us who have been blessed in one way or the other do what you’re doing, I’m sure this place would be a better place for everyone,” the Governor observed.

In an address earlier, the leader of the team, Oriaku, said that the medical mission was solely sponsored by his family, the late Rev. David Ukeje Oriaku family of Okaiuga Nkwoegwu, Umuahia North LGA, in the spirit of giving back to the society.

Oriaku, who said he was among those, who had almost given up hope on Abia before the assumption of the present administration, expressed fulfilment that the medical mission which could not hold under the past administration, despite persistent requests and efforts, had been made possible under Governor Otti.

Otti: work on two major roads in Aba begins soon

Abia State Governor Alex Otti says reconstruction of two major roads in Aba South Local Government, Ohanku and Obuohia roads, will begin soon.

He said the exercise would not only help to ease movement of the people in the affected areas, but would also boost economic activities.

The governor, speaking at the Blessed Michael Iwene Tansi Catholic Church, MCC Road, Aba North Local Government, said: “Very soon, work will start on Ohanku road. And as work is starting on Ohanku road, work will begin in earnest on Obuohia road.

“Those places that are impassable, we will change their story.”

He said the essence of fixing the roads was to change the bad narratives of the roads in the commercial nerve centre of the state.

“Some of the modest things we are doing in Aba and elsewhere are in keeping with our promise and also fulfilling the requirements of the government. Governance is about the welfare and security of the people.”

Dr. Otti said Omuma road, which had remained deteriorated and impassable for over 20 years, was receiving attention as a dual carriage way with cement pavement technology being built there.

“I want to invite you to go to Omuma road and see what is happening there.

Asserting that the people rejoice when the righteous is on the throne, he noted that rejoicing would be the lot of Abia people.

The governor thanked the church for her support throughout the electioneering period and described the Parish Priest, Rev. Father Kelechi Anyanwu, as his good and long standing friend.
