Gov Otti vows to give attention to agriculture, tech, security, others in 2025

Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has assured residents that his administration will prioritize agricultural development in 2025 to boost the state’s economy.

In his New Year message, Governor Otti revealed plans to invest N18.9 billion in supporting economically vulnerable individuals and families.

He also emphasised the government’s commitment to ensuring security and creating a conducive environment for investors and investment opportunities in the state.

Gov Otti while reeling out his government’s plans for the state in 2025 said: “Our pursuits may be different but the goals are often not too far apart: we want to live in fulfilment by applying our talents and abilities to useful endeavours, chase our dreams, pursue worthy causes and one day, when our race is done, look back in gratitude for the opportunities we had and the overall impact made within our spheres of influence.

“Things may not go exactly as we wish but even then, we have a responsibility to step out with hope, doing our best each day to pursue the outcomes we seek for ourselves and our loved ones.

“Hope must override despair and nothing should distract us from giving our all to achieve the goals that we have carefully laid out in the weeks and days leading to this remarkable day.

“I do not possess the power to predict the future but I know one thing for sure: victory ultimately goes to the one who never gave up.

“As a government, our job in the New Year will be to build systems and structures to support your dreams and offer you the institutional leverage to thrive and contribute to our shared aspiration of building a better society.

“With sincerity and commitment as our guiding principles, we have strived to make a meaningful difference in the lives of our people, honouring the faith they have placed in us.

“We are practically in a hurry to rebuild our State and realign governance priorities to reflect the true aspirations of the people.

“We have since evolved a system that prioritises the needs of the downtrodden by paying attention, listening carefully and channelling public resources to where they yield the highest social and economic dividends to the majority.

“By taking on very difficult but economically and socially significant projects in road infrastructure development, health and education, waste management and environmental recoveries, we have demonstrated that no obstacle can be too difficult to surmount when there is the sincere will to get things done.

“Many of the impact-making projects in our urban and rural communities are now nearing completion. Others are also being developed at a pace that leaves no doubt about the determination of the government to complete and add them to the stock of public infrastructure in the State.

“You will find evidence of our commitment to the restoration and upgrade of long-abandoned public infrastructure across the State at the Aguiyi Ironsi Boulevard in Umuahia, Port Harcourt Road in Aba, Obohia and Ohanku Roads, Ohafia-Arochukwu Road, Omenuko Bridge and several others that only served as tools of electioneering deceit before now.

“What makes us different as an administration is that we are driven by a genuine sense of service and an obligation to work for the people. Our pursuit is beyond political glory because we appreciate that humanity comes before politics.

“The ground breaking ceremony for the Abia Medical City Project will happen in the next few weeks. The Project promises to revolutionise the healthcare delivery ecosystem in the region, cut down the rate of medical tourism and provide incentives for the retention of top medical talents in the state. The on-going renovation of 200 primary healthcare centres will also be completed in the first quarter of the New Year to boost access to quality health services, especially in the rural communities.

“We shall in the New Year, consolidate our efforts to make the State investor-friendly because beyond just the promise of higher revenue earning for the government, we are particularly keen on opening channels of lucrative job opportunities for the young people and the expansion of the existing windows for local entrepreneurs who provide ancillary services. Attracting generous local and foreign investments is at the core of our economic development agenda so we shall pursue it with vigour this 2025.

“Therefore, we shall do everything in our power to reposition the state to become irresistibly attractive to those seeking to expand to new territories or cut costs by taking advantage of the boundless opportunities the state offers, especially in the areas of human capital, improved social infrastructure and seamless ease-of-doing-business protocols.

“Abia, I would like to announce, is very open for business and we are ready to provide every necessary support to genuine investors who seek to set up shops in any part of the State.

“Beyond our strategic infrastructure development initiatives as captured in the 2025 Appropriation Act which we intend to implement faithfully, we shall also continue to prioritise security of lives and property, adopting necessary measures to keep criminals and their sponsors out of the state.

“Again, I would like to restate that we shall not hesitate to deploy the full might of the Government against any individual or group whose activities pose a threat to the safety of our people.

“While we insist that wealth and prosperity cannot be built through hand-outs, it is also a statement of fact that many will find it difficult to survive in the short run without a structured system of social support.

“The provision of this huge sum to drive our social protection agenda speaks to the determination of the state government to use the levers of public office to redistribute wealth and ensure that the fruits of social prosperity get to everyone, especially those on the lowest rungs of the income ladder.

“We shall continue to give adequate attention to the welfare of our civil servants and others employed in different capacities by the state government and its institutions because of the enormity of their contributions to the success of our holistic governance agenda.

“The established tradition of consistency in the payment of salaries and other entitlements to our hard-working civil servants and their counterparts working across departments and agencies shall remain.

“I directed at the inception of the administration that pensioners be paid before any office holder is allowed to draw a kobo as salary.

“In the New Year, we shall remain faithful in meeting our obligation to the retirees, in appreciation of their excellent contributions to the development of the State with the energy of their youth.

“To our businesspeople and entrepreneurs, the men and women who support the macroeconomic space with their enterprise and resilience, we appreciate you for everything you do to keep the engines of commerce and industry alive.

“In the new year, we shall work closely with you to identify where we may step in to improve business outcomes and make the enterprise ecosystem in the State more robust and productive.

“I am quite glad that our infrastructure restoration programme is already boosting business activities by attracting new customers from different parts of the country and across the West African region.

“Our artisans and hardworking brothers and sisters in the blue-collar economic space have proven themselves very critical to our collective development objectives by their hard work and creativity.”

Otti inaugurates 1.6-km Cemetery Road, Aba

Gov. Alex Otti of Abia has inaugurated the second phase of 1.6-km Cemetery Road, in the commercial city of Aba.

In a speech at the event on Friday, Otti expressed delight over the achievements recorded by his administration in the creation of intra-city connectivity through quality road networks.

He said that the State Government, “under my watch will not relent in rebuilding Abia and making it a choice destination for investors.

“Our focus is to deliver world class urban infrastructure to the city, so that it becomes one of the most inviting destination for individuals and families and, of course, businesses in West Africa and beyond.

“It may be tough but as we have demonstrated over the last decade of being in the public space, our quest for success is stronger than any resistance that may come our way.

“The effort at reclaiming lost spaces in Aba is not improved in the business environment for locals, it is also drawing the interest and finances of foreign investors,” he said.

Otti said that a lot of projects executed by the government in the last 18 months had led to an expansion in the output of goods and services from the city.

He also said that the government’s infrastructure development agenda had produced greater opportunities for job seekers and entrepreneurs, as well as stirred a strong belief amongst residents that “a new dawn is upon us”.

The governor urged the people to contribute to the prosperity of the state through prompt payment of taxes and other statutory fees to support government’s efforts to build the state’s economy.

“We are encouraged to embrace our civic responsibilities as citizens and partners in the New Abia Project by paying our taxes as and when due.

“Also, citizens should provide reliable and timely information to law enforcement agencies on possible activities of criminals in their neighborhood and join the campaign against indiscriminate dumping of refuse and other forms of bad behaviours.

“The building of a green society is a collective responsibility.

“So, I invite you to become part of this long term project, transcending one single administration,” the governor said.

The Commissioner for Works, Mr Otumchere Oti, said that the reconstruction of the road was in line with the government’s commitment to foster sustainable economic growth through the provision of a viable road network.

Oti said that the road, which trasverses the Cemetery Road Market, was in a most deplorable state and commercial activities in the area dwindled.

According to him, the reconstruction of the road has returned business and life back to normal and improved the aesthetics of the area, which will improve the internally generated revenue of the state.

Oti said that the Cemetery Road Phase II traverses a length of 1.6 kilometers with an average width of 11.5meters.

“It has a composite pavement comprising 100 milimeter thick asphaltic concrete overlying a 200milimeter thick concrete slabs over a length of 1.2 kilometers, while the remaining 400 meters is purely asphaltic concrete pavement.

“Culverts, drains, access slabs and roadway markings are provided, while the entire road is lined with street lights,” he said.

Oti urged residents to take full ownership of the infrastructure and protect it from abuse to avoid acts that would be inimical to the lifespan of the road.

He also promised to engage the relevant agencies in addressing the power challenge experienced by the residents of the area.

In separate speeches, the lawmaker representing Aba Central State Constituency, Mr Stephen Ucheonye, and a Labour Party chieftain, Mr Chimaobi Ebisike, commended the government for alleviating the sufferings of the residents.

They said that the road would boost socio-economic development of the area.

In a remark, the Chairman of Aba South Local Government Area, Mr Obilor Anyanwu, said that the reconstruction of the road had brought socio-economic development in the area.

Anyanwu said that the value of landed properties in the area had increased, while transport fares and travel time spent on the road had reduced, considerably.

Earlier, a resident, Mr Kingsley Anthony, said that the rehabilitation work had brought an end to the long years of neglect experienced by residents and given them a sense of belonging.

Anthony, however, appealed to the government to intervene in the power challenge being experienced in the area.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the governor also inaugurated the 1.58-km Umule and 2.7km Umuocham Roads.

  • LP crisis: Abure, Obi allegedly plot Otti’s expulsion

LP crisis: Abure, Obi allegedly plot Otti’s expulsion

In a new twist to the ongoing crisis within the Labour Party, the embattled National Chairman, Julius Abure and former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, have reportedly joined forces to orchestrate the removal of Abia Governor Alex Oti from the party.

The plot, allegedly driven by a series of accusations levelled against the Governor, comes amid mounting internal conflicts threatening to fracture the already divided party.

Sources close to the Abure-led faction confirmed this latest maneuver is rooted in suspicions that Gov Oti is working with the All Progressives Congress (APC) and lending his support to President Bola Tinubu, ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

“It is reported that the core  the dispute centers around an allegation that Gov. Oti, who is the only Labour Party Governor in Nigeria, recently made a controversial statement suggesting that, in his bid for a second term, it would be only fair to support President Tinubu’s aspiration for a second tenure.

“This remark alleged to have made by Gov. Oti during a private visit to President Tinubu last week, has reportedly set off alarm bells within the Labour Party leadership, which perceives such sentiments as a betrayal of the party’s ideals and an overt attempt to align with the ruling APC.

“In response, Abure and Obi, both of whom are reportedly displeased by Oti’s stance, are said to have united in an effort to expel him from the party in order to preserve its integrity and to prevent a potential defection,” the sources added.

The duo was said to have also accused Oti of using the formation of the Labour National Caretaker Committee as a gimmick to influence Obi to support the removal of Abure from office.

Sources also stated that Peter Obi is expected to meet with the Abure led National Working Committee (NWC) sometimes within the week to finalise plans to rid the party of Oti.

The meeting, which is expected to be high-stakes, will likely chart the next course of action, including formalising plans to electronically register 20million Labour Party members and file charges of anti-party activities against the Governor.

This clandestine plot, however, appears to be part of a broader strategy to consolidate control over the party, as Abure and Obi are both keen to ensure that Oti’s alleged ties to the APC do not further jeopardize Labour Party’s future prospects.

Interestingly, Abure had always maintained a public posture that suggests he was in disagreements with Obi. However, facts have emerged he has been working secretly with Obi underground to relaunch the crisis ridden Labour Party for 2027 elections.

Although, Gov. Oti, on his part, has yet to publicly address the accusations levelled against him. Sources within his camp suggest that he remains resolute in his stance, emphasising that his comments about supporting President Tinubu for a second term were made in the interest of his own political future.

As a Governor seeking re-election, Oti reportedly believes that securing the support of the current administration is a pragmatic step to ensure his political survival, especially given the challenges he face. However, this political calculus has not gone down well with the leadership of the Labour Party, which views such gestures as a direct threat to its ideological foundation.

As the political drama unfolds, the question remains: will Gov. Oti be able to weather the storm and retain his position as the only Labour Party Governor in Nigeria or will Abure and Obi succeed in orchestrating his ouster?

The coming days will be critical, and all eyes are now on the Labour Party’s National Working Committee and its leadership to see how they handle this explosive crisis.

The Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti has stated that the target of his government was to drive the economy of the country through trade and commerce.

Otti speaking at a media chat ahead of the 10-Day Aba International Trade Fair the state government is organizing in conjunction with the leadership of the Aba Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (ACCIMA), starting from Nov 28, said that Abia State is the safest state in the country for business investment.

“Our goal is to use the symposium to talk to our people about the importance of thinking ahead, looking beyond the present and creating systems that power business success across generations.

“We are bringing experts who will guide our entrepreneurs on how to leverage technology and a host of emerging opportunities in the global enterprise ecosystem to build businesses that would outlive the founders as we see in other parts of the world.

“I am glad to report that over the last few days, major players in the local and international business ecosystem have expressed their readiness to be part of the 2024 Aba International Trade Fair. Many have since paid for spaces.

In a letter addressed to the Acting Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, and made available to journalists, Governor Otti described the incident as tragic and barbaric.

“It is with a deep sense of loss that I write to commiserate with you over the unfortunate and barbaric killing of five soldiers by yet-to-be-identified assailants at the boundary town of Umuopara in Umuahia South LGA of my state,” the governor stated in the letter, which he personally signed.

The governor also extended his sympathies to the families of the fallen soldiers and assured them that his administration would support efforts to apprehend the perpetrators.

“Indeed, this unwarranted and mindless attack targeted at our gallant soldiers who have remained steadfast in ensuring the security of lives and property in Abia State is highly condemnable.”

Otti extended his condolences to the GOC 82 Division, Enugu, the Commander, 14 Brigade, Ohafia, and the Commanding Officer, 145 Battalion, Umuahia, where the men were drawn from, adding “Please, also extend my deep condolences to the immediate families of the gallant soldiers who paid the supreme price as well as those who were injured during the attack.”

The governor recalled that “On May 30th, this year, a similar event happened at the Obikabia Junction near Aba.

“Together with your men and other security agencies, we started a manhunt for the criminals, and luckily, the masterminds have since been apprehended.

“My administration is poised to join hands with the Nigerian Army and other security agencies to carry out a thorough investigation to unmask those behind the attack.”

He added: “In due course, I will make contact with the immediate families of all the soldiers affected to support them as they mourn their loved ones.”

Recall that gunmen, early Wednesday morning at about 6.18 am, attacked an Army checkpoint at the Abia Imo/Abia boundary community of Ekenobizi in Umuopara in Umuahia South LGA, where some soldiers lost their lives.

    Many hurrahs for Otti

Governor Alex Otti did something few have done before in Nigerian politics. He defeated his own party, and harrumphed with gloating after the triumph. If for nothing, it shows who commands the politics of Abia State today.

He showed to all that it was not the Labour Party that won the election for him when he swept his way to the governor’s house of the state.

He has been doing the work for a long time. He has written, he has mobilized, he has stayed home to tap into the roots. He fought and fell and rose up again. He has abided by the Ballad of Sir Andrews: “I am struck and wounded, I lay me down and rest awhile, and I’ll rise and fight again.” He rose after falling and he is the patriarch of Abia politics today. Abia has always followed its own path in the politics of the southeast. It was PPA when PDP was the mainstay of the east. Now, they may say it is LP but it is LP because it is Alex Otti. It is not Alex Otti because it is LP. He is one man who has commanded his troops. It is not Peter Obi, who helped him. It is because of him that Peter Obi can say his movement has a state. Obi should thank Alex for that. Or else, it is no shishi for him. Abia is the doing of one man’s genius, and that man is Alex Otti.

Speaking at the swearing-in ceremony held at the Banquet of the Government House, Umuahia, Governor Alex Otti said that though the Mayors emerged from different political platforms, the whole agenda remains the same which is putting Abia first.

“We must do our best to bring a permanent closure to certain challenges that have held our communities for ages.

“There are a few challenges that we must effectively tackle in short and medium terms including access to potable water, quality basic education, electricity for homes and businesses, affordable transportation, quality road networks including safe and secure neighbourhood,” he said.

Otti, who said that the new Council functionaries are expected to take full responsibility in the development of their areas, warned that they should not fail Abians as there should be no excuse for low performance.

  • LP Governor Otti’s men win Council seats on ZLP tickets

LP Governor Otti’s men win Council seats on ZLP tickets

Labour Party (LP) faces a wipe out in the only state – Abia – it controls in the country.

Its protracted crisis at national level percolated to Abia State because of the disagreement between national leadership and Governor Alex Otti.

Otti convened a stakeholders’ parley which rejected national chairman Abure’s leadership and enthroned Mrs. Nnadi Usman as caretaker chairman to mid-wife another national convention to produce a new leadership.

In the rundown to weekend’s local government election in Abia State, the party’s national leadership sent a list of candidate different from the ones picked by its Abia chapter.

The candidates loyal to Governor Otti contested on the ticket of Zenith Labour Party (ZLP).

The ZLP won 15 of the 17 chairmanship seats. Young Peoples Party (YPP) took the remain seats, according to the poll results announced by the Chairman of the Abia State Independent Electoral Commission (ABSIEC), Prof. George Chima.

Chima, who announced the results at the commission’s headquarters in Umuahia, the state capital, said the polls were free and fair.

A source said as the battle for the control of the Abia LP chapter intensified between Abure faction and the Caretaker Committee, the governor’s supporters decided to contest on the platform of ZLP.

The defeat of LP, the source said, may mark the beginning of the end for LP as Otti may dump the platform ahead of 2027 elections.

House of Representatives Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, reflecting on the LP’s protracted crisis, warned that Otti may be the last LP governor in the state.

The governor, while shunning the LP, urged Abians to vote for candidates that share the vision of his government, regardless of their political parties.

The indication of how deep the crisis in Abia LP is, manifested when Otti and his aides failed to attend the inauguration of LP campaign in Aba.

The state government gave permission to the ZLP to use the Enyimba International Stadium for its campaign,  which the governor’s supporters attended.

According to the source, “those who won the local government seats under ZLP are Otti’s foot soldiers who are preparing the grounds for his switch to the relatively new party in the state, if the problem in the Labour Party remains unresolved ahead of the 2027 general elections.”

Otti, accompanied by his wife, Priscila, voted at his Unit 017, Ahiafor, Umuru-Umuehim Nvosi in Isialangwa South local government area.

    Abure faction kicks

LP members loyal to Abure kicked against the outcome of the poll, accusing Governor Otti of anti-party activities, manipulation and starving the party of funds.

An official of the party, who spoke on condition of anonymity, alleged that the governor, in collaboration with ABSIEC, removed the names of LP candidates from the ballot papers, thereby excluding them from the election.

He said trouble started in the party ahead of the primaries when Otti  allegedly tried to impose candidates on the party.

The official said the party rejected it and the governor subsequently directed his loyalists to move to the ZLP to contest the election.

He added: “We had our primaries and our candidates for local government election emerged. But Abia State Electoral Commission didn’t allow any of them to contest. They removed their names. Alex Otti used his position to influence the election. What makes him different from the other political parties we are condemning?

“It is because the party insisted that the governor cannot impose any candidate. We insisted that there should be proper primaries. He took his own people to the Zenith Labour Party and barred the Labour Party candidates from participating in the election.

“The governor wanted to hand-pick the candidates for the election for the Labour Party and when it didn’t work. He took his people to the ZLP to contest. No single candidate from the Labour Party was allowed to participate in the election.

“The matter has gone to court. But I don’t see anything coming out of it since they control the judiciary in the state. The Labour Party leadership is wondering what is the difference between Alex Otti and the other political parties that we are condemning? Peter Obi should be very careful of Alex Otti.”

Abure in US to monitor poll

Although his party is on fire at home, Abure has joined other political leaders across the world on the invitation of the United States Government to watch the presidential election in the country.

The election day is tomorrow. Two leading candidates, Vice-President Kamala Harris (Democrat) and former President Donald Trump (Republican) are in a tight race.

Abure, in his verified X handle wrote: “I’ve just arrived Washington DC on the U.S. Government invitation to join other Political Parties and World Leaders to participate in the series of activities leading to the USA election and to observe the election.

“Hopefully, experience gathered will help shape and reshape election processes in Nigeria.

“I’ll keep all my followers and Labour Party members informed of developments,” he said.

Abure further stated that he was in the country on the invitation of The Country Director, The International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) Nigeria, Seray Jah.

Abia LG polls: Otti expresses satisfaction with electoral process

Gov. Alex Otti of Abia has expressed satisfaction over the smooth electoral process in Saturday’s Local Government Elections in the state.

Otti spoke in an interview with newsmen after casting his vote at about 12:19pm at Ahiafor Umuru-Umuehim Nvosi Polling Unit 017 in Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area.

He also expressed satisfaction with the voter turnout and orderly conduct of the exercise.

The governor was accompanied to the polling unit by his wife, Priscilla, who also voted in the same unit.

He said that, aside from minor disruptions in Obingwa and Ohafia LGAs, the process was largely peaceful, with security agencies deployed to maintain order where needed.

He encouraged the electorate to vote for credible candidates, who could deliver their campaign promises.

He also reiterated the importance of choosing leaders based on competence rather than political affiliation.

Otti said that council elections were particularly significant because they impact rural communities directly, allowing residents to elect candidates they know and trust.

“The point remains that political parties are platforms for running elections and like you would notice, a lot of political parties have problems but irrespective of that, we have advocated that people should vote candidates that are credible and competent to deliver.

“And it’s a local government election. We all know our people,” Otti said.

He further expressed the hope that the elections would reflect the people’s desire for capable leadership and reinforce the delivery of democratic dividends at the grassroots level.
