  • Oyebamiji: Beyond his professional resume

    Oyebamiji: Beyond his professional resume

    • By Ayo Ayoade

Simply put, leadership is about taking care of those in your charge. It is about guiding people with influence and embodying a set of virtues, not holding a position of power. In the same vein, a true leader’s ‘look’ is defined by his or her inner qualities, such as integrity and wisdom. A leader must possess a strong moral compass, the vision to articulate a clear purpose, and the humility to be self-aware and listen to others. This includes a servant-oriented approach where a leader prioritizes the well-being and growth of their followers above their own.

When leadership fails to deliver, the consequences are profound and go beyond missed goals. The breakdown of trust between the leader and the group erodes the social fabric, causing the collective purpose to dissolve and leading to conflict. This failure also causes a loss of meaning for the followers, resulting in demotivation and disillusionment. Most of all, failed leadership creates a moral and ethical vacuum where corruption and dishonesty can thrive, causing long-term systemic damage.

Leaders who fail often do so by neglecting the very principles that define good leadership. Their failures are typically rooted in a lack of integrity and a focus on self-interest over the collective good. A leader who lacks humility and self-awareness, a leader who can’t admit when he or she is wrong or who refuses to listen to feedback not only creates an environment of fear and stagnation but more often than not clings to a flawed vision. This inability to adapt or pivot demonstrates a lack of wisdom and ultimately leads to the ethical and moral decay of the entire organization, as no one feels safe to challenge the status quo or offer new ideas.

Asiwaju Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji (AMBO) is now more than a name, it has become a rising force driven by purpose, built on integrity, and powered by the people. It is a movement born from the desire for a better Osun. It is a mission to restore dignity, progress, and true leadership. It is a mandate handed down by the people who believe it’s time for something different and better in Osun state.

Oyebamiji began his education at A.D.C Primary School, Oke-Ada, Ikire, from 1971 to 1977 and continued at Ayedaade Grammar School, Ikire, from 1978 to 1982, where he obtained his Secondary School Leaving Certificate. He earned his Ordinary National Diploma (OND) and Higher National Diploma (HND) in Banking and Finance from The Polytechnic, Ibadan, Oyo State.

He later obtained a Master’s degree in Public Administration from Lagos State University in 1997 and another Master’s degree in Business Administration from the University of Ado-Ekiti in 2004. He is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Bankers.

Beyond his professional resume, Oyebamiji, currently serving as CEO of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), is a man of the people. Hailed from Ikire in Osun State, he has a deep understanding of the hopes and aspirations of every citizen. His governance style favours economic growth and development that directly benefits the public. AMBO leads with humility, respect, and a genuine willingness to listen, qualities that have earned him a reputation as a true servant leader.

The Yoruba proverb teaches us that you don’t crown a king without first testing his mettle. By that measure, Oyebamiji’s worth has been thoroughly proven. His track record speaks for itself, and his broad appeal is evident in the wide-ranging support he commands from social groups, political allies, and traditional rulers. He maintains strong relationships with leaders at every level, from religious and traditional figures to youth groups, trade associations, and civil servants, both locally and nationally.

There is a saying that goes, “A good leader inspires people to have confidence in the leader, a great leader inspires people to have confidence in themselves.” Oyebamiji, a man of peace and unity, embodies this principle. His integrity, kindness, and leadership have earned him widespread love and respect. In a world where titles are abundant but trust is scarce, the true mark of exceptional leadership isn’t authority, but authenticity. People may comply with those in power, but they only truly follow those whose hearts they trust and whose character they admire – a leader who shows genuine concern for others and lives with integrity.

At a time like this, we must confess that all the individuals who have shown interest in flying the flag of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in next year’s Osun governorship election bring valuable experience and credentials to the table. This speaks to a vibrant and competitive political landscape. However, among this array of contenders, one name continues to dominate the conversation: Bola Oyebamiji. The pace and scale at which both APC members and the wider public are rallying round his aspiration is not only remarkable but unprecedented in the political history of Osun State.

From Osogbo to Ile-Ife, Ede to Ikirun, Ijebu-Jesa to Ila-Oragun, Oyebamiji has secured numerous endorsements from various groups. These endorsements are more than symbolic, reflecting trust, belief, and a readiness for a new kind of leadership in Osun State. His message of unity, change, and people-driven development is resonating powerfully across all demographics, from the elite to the grassroots, and among market women and youth. With such widespread backing and a clear vision for Osun’s future, AMBO continues to emerge, not just as a candidate, but as a unifying force and a beacon of hope for many.

Oyebamiji’s antecedents are rich with service, results, and integrity. As a seasoned financial expert and former commissioner with a solid banking background, he possesses the capacity to manage state resources with vision. His track record of effective administration and strategic decision-making positions him as someone more than capable of navigating the complex responsibilities of governance. Whether in private business, public finance, or administration, his involvement consistently yields outstanding results.

His tenure in public service has consistently reflected transparency, progress, and people-focused impact. His impact has never been a subject of chance, but a product of strategic insight, disciplined execution, and a clear vision for growth. This exceptional ability to turn challenges into opportunities has earned him widespread recognition as a solution-driven leader – one whose record is marked by progress, productivity, and purpose. With a golden track record across multiple sectors, he stands tall as a beacon of capable and transformational leadership.

The former commissioner’s humility stands out as one of his most powerful assets in the race to clinch the governorship ticket of the APC and ultimately win the 2026 Osun guber election. His ability to lead without arrogance, listen without judgment, and serve without seeking applause continues to draw people to his vision and values. This humility remains a strength under control, and it is playing a vital role in the growing wave of support behind his candidacy.

The upcoming 2026 gubernatorial election in Osun promises to be intense, making this a critical period with no room for error. The political leadership of the APC, along with the electorate and the general populace, must be vigilant. The people of Osun are urged to be cautious about what they believe, as a wrong choice at this stage could be costly and set the state back for decades.

Indigenes of Osun State in the United Kingdom have donated N25 million to support the governorship ambition of the Managing Director of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), Asiwaju Bola Oyebamiji.

The group, under the banner of the AMBO Movement, also declared their endorsement of President Bola Tinubu ahead of the 2027 elections, commending his economic reforms and foreign policy initiatives.

In a communiqué jointly signed by its Chairman, Mayowa Olabisi, and Public Relations Officer, Olawale Mikail, the group urged the All Progressives Congress (APC) to field Oyebamiji as its flagbearer in Osun.

They argued that Oyebamiji’s fiscal expertise and leadership record make him a strong choice, recalling that during his tenure as a state official, Osun boosted its internally generated revenue, cleared pension arrears, restored full salary payments, and implemented stabilising economic measures.

“We, AMBO Movement UK announced an initial donation of ₦25 million to Oyebamiji’s campaign and pledged to mobilise at least 10,000 additional votes for him in the 2026 polls if the APC gives him the guber ticket.

“With competence, compassion, and continuity, AMBO represents Osun’s best chance at prosperity.

They added that “We reaffirm our loyalty to Tinubu’s reform agenda. Tinubu’s recent diplomatic engagements in Japan and Brazilhave repositioned Nigeria for stronger bilateral ties, technology transfer, and trade partnerships.”

  • Oyebamiji: Purpose over politics?

    Oyebamiji: Purpose over politics?

The pursuit of power and purpose often intersect in politics. This raises fundamental questions about leadership, governance, and the role of individuals in shaping their societies. In Nigeria’s context, marked by fluid alliances and shifting loyalties, a technocrat’s dilemma is particularly pronounced.

While the intersection of purpose and politics is a matter for another time, Bola Oyebamiji’s decision to run for the Osun State governorship election in 2026, under the All Progressives Congress (APC) platform is a case in point. With his extensive experience in both public and private sectors, Oyebamiji’s candidacy promises a potentially new wave of development and accountability in the state.

In the midst of economic turmoil, the technocrat’s promise of pragmatic solutions can be a potent catalyst for change. Bill Clinton’s 1992 presidential campaign symbolizes this phenomenon, where the phrase “It’s the economy, stupid” resonated with voters and transcended partisan divides. By positioning himself as a competent economic manager, Clinton defied expectations and secured the presidency. This strategic emphasis on economic competence can be a decisive factor in times of crisis. It can allow a candidate to rise above partisan politics and tap into the electorate’s desire for pragmatic solutions.

In the present field of wannabes, if AMBO, as Oyebamiji is fondly called, positions himself as the competent technocrat, who manifests the mantra, “Cometh the hour, cometh the man” – someone who rises to meet the moment’s challenges, he will be very difficult to stop. As Clinton showed at a similar time of economic dysfunction, the candidate who projects himself as a doer, who can put food on the table and elevate living standards, has a very clear advantage. Given his track record, I think AMBO has the savvy to do so!

With over-28 years of expertise in the banking sector, and as the current Managing Director/CEO of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), Oyebamiji’s leadership approach is characterized by a commitment to communal development, grassroots mobilization, and inclusive governance.

But the conversation shouldn’t end there! With existential threats looming, Nigerians are seeking a proven leader who can manage resources effectively and outline a programme similar to the Unity Party of Nigeria’s iconic Four Cardinal Programme of 1979. If AMBO showcases his ability to deliver, he may be seen as a modern-day equivalent of the late Lateef Jakande and Bola Ige. Both leaders were elected based on their reputation as capable administrators, rather than partisan affiliations.

It’d be in Oyebamiji’s interest to build a data-driven ‘coalition of the grassroots’ to achieve his purpose. He should leverage his proven economic credentials as Osun State Commissioner for Finance (2017-2018; 2019-2022) to make a strong case. Specifically, he could highlight his achievements in fiscal balance during his tenure and explain how these successes can be built upon and fine-tuned in today’s conditions.

Further still, AMBO should revisit the annals of history and examine the trends that have shaped voters’ perceptions of managerial competence. Defections alone don’t win elections, as the 2022 Osun State governorship election has shown. Similarly, endorsements alone don’t guarantee success, as the 2015 presidential election has revealed. Much more needs to be done to win voters’ trust!

Currently, across Osun State’s senatorial districts, the electorate is palpably receptive to a leader who epitomizes these qualities. The state is currently in a state of flux, with no single political party dominating the electorate’s imagination. The question therefore remains: can Oyebamiji forge the necessary alliances to capitalize on this sentiment and turn it to his advantage?

May the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world, grant us peace in Nigeria!

  • AMBO 2026: Oyebamiji is the answer

AMBO 2026: Oyebamiji is the answer

    By Sulaiman Gafar

In the pages of Nigeria’s modern political history, few names carry the quiet authority of Asiwaju Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji. Where others rely on noise, he speaks through action. Where many seek attention, he delivers impact. Today, as Osun State stands at the edge of a pivotal decision, the case for Asiwaju Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji—strong, strategic, and rooted in a legacy of results—is not just compelling. It is urgent.

His journey into public consciousness did not begin in the campaign circuit, nor was it paved with empty promises. It began in Nigeria’s financial sector, where for over 28 years he earned his reputation not by proximity to power but through excellence in performance.

From Wema Bank in the late 80s to senior executive roles at Spring Bank and Enterprise Bank, Asiwaju Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji built a career on turning numbers into narratives of growth. He wasn’t just present in the room—he was the one rewriting the rules. Recognitions like the Central Bank’s Star Performer Award and Trans Bank’s Most Profitable Manager citation were no surprises. They were inevitabilities for a man who treated results like a standard, not an exception.

But while others may have settled into comfortable retirement after such a run, Oyebamiji was destined for harder work.

In 2012, a failing state enterprise—OSICOL—was handed to him. It was bleeding cash and credibility. Most had written it off. But where others saw rot, he saw opportunity. He walked in with clarity, reshaped its financial model, installed discipline, and executed with military precision. Within five years, ₦300 million became ₦6 billion. He didn’t just revive OSICOL; he redefined what was possible when private-sector insight met public-sector responsibility. What was once a deadweight on Osun’s books became a thriving holding company under the name Omoluabi Holdings.

At OSICOL, some of his legacy projects include the construction of the Corporate Headquarters of Omoluabi Holdings at Abere, the establishment of a viable mega Petroleum and Gas Station in Abere, and strategic investments in real estate across highbrow areas of Abuja and Lagos. He also initiated a thriving cocoa plantation in Osogbo and spearheaded the rebranding and standardisation of the Essence Table Water brand, turning it into a household name across Nigeria.

The transformation didn’t go unnoticed. In 2017, Oyebamiji was tapped once again, this time as Commissioner for Finance in Osun State. It was not an easy season—national revenue was thinning, state debts were mounting, and faith in government was wearing thin. Yet under Asiwaju Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji’s financial stewardship, Osun didn’t sink. It stood. Salaries were paid without drama. Infrastructure continued. Internally generated revenue began to climb.

When he took over the affairs of the Osun Ministry of Finance in 2017, he reformed the ministry and grew the IGR from ₦6 billion where he met it, to ₦24 billion by 2022. Under his leadership, Osun State was commended for the effective implementation of the SLOGOR programme—a European Union–supported reform initiative. These efforts earned the Governor the prestigious ‘Best Governor on Efficiency of Public Expenditure’ award from the World Bank’s States’ Fiscal Transparency, Accountability, and Sustainability (SFTAS) program. During the same period, the State also received the Award of Excellence as the top performer in Domestic Revenue Mobilisation.

Similarly, under his direct supervision, Osun became a strong contender in the World Bank–backed SFTAS programme. It is no surprise that the state was rewarded with millions of dollars in three consecutive years while the programme lasted. During his tenure as Head of the Consolidated Fund (HCF), Oyebamiji also delivered on the SIFMIS programme, strengthened the Treasury Single Account (TSA) regime, and helped nurture the Public Procurement Agency into a cornerstone of financial accountability.

Then came the national stage. In 2023, when President Tinubu’s administration was looking for a fixer to reposition the National Inland Waterways Authority, the choice was easy. Asiwaju Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji was appointed as Managing Director, and just as he had done before, he got to work. Within months, 15 new operational boats were introduced. An administrative complex and staff clinic were commissioned. A pioneering Waterways Transportation Code was launched to reduce accidents and ensure safety across Nigeria’s neglected inland transport routes. River Marshals were deployed, public-private partnerships began taking shape. He improved staff welfare, commenced child care payments for staff, facilitated local and foreign training for all staff, sustained the payment of 13 months’ salary and other staff entitlements, and in 2024, reduced boat accidents and deaths on Nigeria waterways by 30% and for the first time in decades, NIWA became something more than a forgotten agency. It became a symbol of what efficient leadership can do.

What makes Asiwaju Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji different isn’t what he says. It’s what he consistently does. While politics has become a theatre of talking heads and empty gestures, he remains a man of substance. His governance style is rooted in capacity, not charisma. In boardrooms, ministries, or federal agencies, he has never chased attention. He has simply earned respect. His blueprint is not theoretical—it exists in the numbers, in the policies he crafted, in the institutions he revived.

Osun is not a state in need of reinvention. It is a state in need of restoration. A state that deserves to be led by someone who has scaled the learning curve, who understands the weight of governance, and who is prepared not just to serve, but to deliver. Asiwaju Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji represents such without complacency. Reform without recklessness. Leadership without ego.

As the election season approaches, voters must ask a simple question: do we gamble on rehearsed ambition, continue with the legendary dancer or do we reward proven leadership? Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji is not a stranger to results. He is the architect behind them. He is not here to promise change. He has already executed it—repeatedly, across sectors, at scale.

The future of Osun cannot be left to chance. It must be entrusted to a man who understands both the heartbeat of the people and the blueprint of sustainable progress. In this critical moment, ASIWAJU MUNIRUDEEN BOLA OYEBAMIJI is not just an aspirant. He is the answer.
